New Album: Plants and Animals – The End of That

Plants and Animals’ new album, The End of That, is out today, February 28, via Secret City Records, and to celebrate, the band is releasing a brand new video for the first single, “Lightshow,” which premiered at Paste today. The End of That is also streaming in its entirety all week long at Spinner.

The “Lightshow” video is a collaboration between producer Doug Karr and director Mitchell Hart who work on visual media together in New York. Hart explains the video as a commentary on contemporary media consumption: “There’s so much information coming at us at any given moment … as a result we’re moving further away from appreciating the specifics of any given piece of media.” Hart used the actual multi-track recordings to generate large data sets based on the audio files. Each track was analyzed through a series of code snippets and plug-ins to get what you see on screen. “A true combination of data visualization and cinematic production make this video unique.”

“Songs such as the slower-tempo, contemplative “Before” and the slightly 1970s-rock ‘n roll “The End of That,” really do give the impression that the band has closed a door on past experiences and is starting afresh. The End of That is an older and wiser album.” – Interview

“Even at their most ornate, Plants and Animals have always been a power trio at core. They play with such vigor that they might as well be fronting an unheard orchestra.” – FILTER

“Vibrant, constantly rewarding…” – SPIN.com

Plants and Animals have also added performances to their SXSW schedule and more North American tour dates through May.

Gordon Voidwell: Whitney Houston Tribute Video

Gordon Voidwell teamed up with NYC’s Kids Table production crew for his new track “XO Boyfriend” to create a music video that draws from Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” video.  The styling, choreography, set design, and photography all take cues from Whitney’s mid-80’s classic.  The homage was filmed in a hot Brooklyn warehouse in the summer of 2011, but GV had been keeping it under wraps until the right moment, which unfortunately arose this week with the untimely passing of the legendary singer.

In regards to the concept of the video, director Steve Pristin says “Gordon Voidwell’s music and style is often compared to artists of the 80’s — rather than fight that notion I wanted to fully embrace it, while paying homage to one of the most iconic musicians and music videos of the 1980’s. Growing up, in my home, Whitney Houston was viewed with a reverence unmatched – she will be deeply missed.”

Gordon Voidwell, who just this past week released his brand new MalcolmXXXMclaren mixtape added, “It’s amazing to think that in 48 short years, Whitney Houston covered the entire range of human emotion through music. From epic love ballads to 808-driven synthpop to gospel music, her voice spoke the complexity and depth of being human. On a selfish level, I’m saddened to think there will never be any new Whitney Houston music. She’s inspired a lot of what i do.”

Video: Phenomenal Handclap Band – “The Right One”

“The Phenomenal Handclap Band rises above the masses” – NPR

“Their collective instrumental prowess is dizzying – each instrument occupying its own sonic space, each drum fill, synth pad and bass run perfectly layered into a throbbing mass that reaches nearly symphonic levels” – Paste

New York’s cosmic-disco ensemble, Phenomenal Handclap Band propels usinto their retro-futuristic styled world with the release of video, “The Right One,” off their second album Form and Control due out on February 14th from Tummy Touch Records.

Director Moh Azima, who has previously worked on the band’s “15 to 20” video, explains that the song’s message was his inspiration behind this conceptional video. “I played around with lots of symbolism like triangles, monuments and the eclipse to create the narrative.” Also included in the concept was the use of multiples to represent the difficulty of choosing “The Right One” amidst other contenders. He goes on to further explain that “ultimately the message of the video, just like the song, is one of transcendence, about not getting too involved with making sure you’ve got the right one, about just believing in yourself and allowing that to lift you higher.”

Form and Control is available via pre-order HERE
