Newest Love: Holy Esque

Scottish Indie rock band Holy Esque has announced plans to release their self-titled debut EP on April 23.  The EP will be available digitally on iTunes and on CD at upcoming shows.

Listen to the new track “Rose” streaming now here.

The young Holy Esque, whose members range from 19 to 20 years old, formed in early 2011 in Glasgow and consists of Pat Hynes (vocals/guitar), Keir Reid (keys), Hugo McGinley (guitar) and Ralph McClure (drums).   The band began playing shows throughout the UK in less than six months of their inception.  After posting a few demos online, word spread rapidly about the enigmatic band’s intense sonic morass of distortion and atmospheric soundscapes, landing them coverage on numerous blogs and NME’s prestigious “Radar,” who said “HE really benefit from that everything up to ten factor, but also know their way around a riff that kinda sounds like classic Bunnymen played by James Dean Bradfield….you’ll be needing to play this loud.”
In early 2012, Holy Esque entered the DIY Pink Megic Studios built in a flat in the Southside of Glasgow with producer Kevin Burleigh (Glasvegas, Simple Minds, Supernaturals) to record their debut self-titled debut.  Armed with big riffs, thick crunchy bass lines and perhaps one of the most unique, yearning vocals heard in years, Holy Esque meld post-punk and 90’s alternative rock influences with skillful ability on their debut.  Featuring driving indie rock anthems like “Rose” and “Ladybird Love,” the EP is an incredible introduction to Glasgow’s most promising new band.

Holy Esque EP Track Listing:
1.    Ladybird Love
2.    Rose
3.    Loneliest Loneliness
4.    Prophet of Privilege

Holy Esque Tour Dates:

Newest Love: Zulu Winter – “We Should Be Swimming”

“…music that shimmers like a sky full of fireworks” NME

catchy and anthemic indie-dance” – The Guardian

UK reverby rockers” – BrooklynVegan

Perseverance and dedication are two things that the members of Zulu Winter are very familiar with. The four guys from Oxfordshire, England came together in their teens over a shared love of music and have been collaborating ever since. Now, twelve years after their first practice as a band, Zulu Winter is gearing up to release Language, a debut album that has the immediate appeal of pop while at the same time packed with emotional insight. Inspired by everything from 19th century literature to obscure ‘60s electronica, Language will be released in North America on June 19th via Arts & Crafts.

Language is a collection of multi-dimensional songs that bleed with sentiment and syncopated dance beats. The album opens with “Key To My Heart,” a sincere message of love that showcases the depth and richness of the band’s sound with layers of swirling instrumentation. The upbeat “Silver Tongue” is driven by an energetic bass line that leads to a danceable chorus. “Bitter Moon” is an emotionally charged track hinged on a powerful chorus, inviting listeners to experience a vulnerable side of the band. “We Should Be Swimming” is a melancholic pop-song running over a compelling rhythm. Zulu Winter released a chilling video for the track, and today they have released the song as a free MP3 download.

Dragonette have spent the last two years working on special and successful collaborations. “Fire In Your New Shoes, ” their pairing with Kaskade, was a huge club hit worldwide, and one of the 4 songs they did with French DJ Martin Solveig, “Hello,” was a pop hit across the globe, going Top 10 in over 30 countries, achieving platinum status in the USA, getting synched 150 times in the process, and leading to Mr. Solveig producing Madonna. Now the band turn their attention to their own material again.

Preparing to release two brand new tunes this March, today sees the unveiling of Dragonette’s “The Right Woman” which appears on Proud to be Woman Vol. 3, a compilation put together by Diane von Furstenberg in celebration of International Women’s Day.  The compilation will be released both digitally and as a limited edition Play button. All proceeds from the compilation benefit Vital Voices, an organization dedicated to empowering women worldwide. The track is a collaboration with producer Felix Blowxsom, who has worked with Sia and Empire of the Sun, and produces, remixes, and DJs under the Plastic Plates moniker. Check out some of his tracks here.

The band is also readying the video for the first proper new single “Let It Go” to be unleashed at the end of the month.

Video: Kate Martin – “Candle Burnin’, Wax Drippin'”

I just listened to this 5 times in a row. I love it.

According to Kate, Hand Me My Bow And Arrow, was a difficult second album to make, but not for the usual reasons of writer’s block or procrastination. Instead, the Townsville songstress was beset by a series of battles throughout the writing and recording process, beginning with family breakdown, and followed up by lost jobs, discarded boyfriends, unpaid rent and being evacuated from her house to escape a cyclone.

“The album came together surprisingly easily”, Kate explains, “I wasn’t exactly short of material to write about.” Candle Burnin’ Wax Drippin’ is about the relationship that are you know will fail from the start, but you stay in it regardless.

Hand Me My Bow And Arrow will be released through Shock Records on March 23.

Video: Mati Zundel – “Senor Montecostes”

“In Zundel’s electronic music and in this song “Señor Montecostes” you can hear the sounds of South America but also the sounds of Africa in the cumbia dance rhythms, the sounds of Detroit and some dubstep.” – Bob Boilen, NPR Music

“ZZK is the first label to push the sound of Argentina from the villa (ghettos) to the uptown.  ZZK is a big part in bringing this to the attention of the people.” – Diplo

Mati Zundel’s is the first proper album release since Waxploitation (Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley, The Causes Compilations) joined up with ZZK Records out of Buenos Aires. If you’re unfamiliar with ZZK and Mati, they’ve been pioneering a new type of experimental dance music that fuses everything from dancehall to dubstep with música tipica of South America. If you’re looking for a good background on what’s going on down in the Argentine experimental dance scene, DJ Rupture’s feature in Fader a few years back is a good place to start. And for more info on Mati, check out NPR’s piece where they named him one of the favorite new artists of 2011 (read HERE).
