Another New Marian Hill Track Before Coachella Performance Tomorrow

Photo: Shervin Lainez

Today, platinum-certified duo Marian Hill drops their latest track, “Wish You Would,” off of Unusual. The song arrives ahead of their performance at Coachella tomorrow at 3:25PM – 4:10PM PT at the Outdoor Theatre, which will include a special guest appearance. Listen to “Wish You Would” below.

Of the song, Marian Hill says, “‘Wish You Would’ is all about tension. The chord progression oscillates between two chords a half step apart, never quite resolving, and the lyrics are all about wishing something could happen while knowing it cannot. You want someone, but they’re unavailable. And you’re actually unavailable as well. But sometimes that only makes the wanting more powerful. ‘Wish You Would’ hangs perpetually in that state of almost, and the sneaky sweetness that comes with it.”

Marian Hill debuted a short episode for “Wish You Would,” which is the fifth of ten one-minute visual episodes the duo conceptualized for each song off the upcoming album—watch it here. “Wish You Would” follows previously-released tracks, “Differently” and “Subtle Thing.” “Differently” was produced by Marian Hill and notable Canadian producer, Boi-1da (Drake, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Lana Del Rey).

The duo’s sophomore album, Unusual, is set for release on May 11th. The album features ten tracks written and produced by Jeremy Lloyd (production/songwriting) and Samantha Gongol (vocals/songwriting) of Marian Hill. See the full Unusual tracklist below. Pre-order Unusual now here.

In celebration of Unusual, Marian Hill are currently on a full-scale North American headline tour. Billed as the “UNUSUAL” tour, Los Angeles-based singer and producer Michl is serving as support. The tour kicked off April 12 in Los Angeles at The Fonda Theatre and includes stops in Brooklyn, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and more. DATAROCK – Back After 9 Years!

“…this band can nail any song they want, cheekiness be damned” – Pitchfork
“A note-perfect tale of nerd love from two Norwegian dance rockers” – Rolling Stone
“…a frothy elixir out of 1980s synth-pop, art-rock and new wave” – The New York Times
“Don’t be fooled by the tracksuits and ironic facial hair – these wacky Norwegian ‘new rave’ dudes actually write ace songs” – SPIN
“[Datarock] delivers another set of kitschy…songs…very catchy” – BrooklynVegan

The return of DATAROCK is finally upon us: the Norwegian tracksuited synth-stars have finally released their long-awaited third album Face the Brutality. After a nine-year absence, the new album still checks off every spot on the DATAROCK checklist: infuriatingly catchy, impeccably produced, with an undertone of lighthearted goofiness. Make sure not to miss the action-packed video for “Laugh in the Face of Darkness.”

DATAROCK’s playful brand of indie-dance crossover music has been featured everywhere from Workaholics to Vampire Diaries, to more than ten major EA games to various ad campaigns including Apple and Google — take one listen to the opening bassline of “Fa Fa Fa” and you’ll instantly recognize it. American fans have been able to catch sight of the signature red tracksuits at festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza and late night TV programs like Jimmy Kimmel. Face the Brutality will be the synth-rockers’ first LP since 2009 and first output since their musical, The Musical, in 2015. Years in the making, Face the Brutality is an album for the bored and bitter survivors of 2017, an upbeat escape with substance.

Obsessed: Tourist’s Newest EP, Wash

UK-based producer and composer Tourist has released his latest Wash EP, as well as the visuals for featured track “Sleepwalking” (feat. Swim Mountain & Esther Joy). Last month Tourist revealed a collection of “We Stayed Up All Night” remixes, including versions from Tom Demac and Matthew Dear on Beatport here, offering new takes on his EP’s lead single. Tourist recently wrapped a string of US tour dates supporting Bonobo and Bob Moses, his first shows in the states since his stellar Coachella performance earlier this year.

The GRAMMY-winning songwriter and electronic musician William Phillips aka Tourist had this to say:

With this new music I wanted to make something that was more reflective of who I am now and how my life has changed over the past year. I moved out of my windowless studio and started writing from home again. I think subconsciously I’ve started writing more joyous, colorful music and I’ve loved being more collaborative once again. These tracks are my favorite music I’ve produced so far, Tourist will always change with each release and I’ve loved pushing the sound into a new place.

Tourist makes yearning, bittersweet dance tracks. He’s considered an “artist’s artist”, with fans such as Flume and Porter Robinson supporting his releases. After the self-titled debut EP (2012), Tonight EP (2013), and Patterns EP (2014) featuring guest appearances by Lianne La Havas and Will Heard, as well as high-profile remixes for Chvrches, Haim, Christine and the Queens under his belt, Tourist went on to win the GRAMMY for co-writing the Sam Smith hit “Stay With Me”, and he released his debut album U (2016) to critical acclaim and support from outlets like Vice, Billboard and Rolling Stone Australia.

The single, “Run” landed with #1 spots on BBC Radio 1 dance charts and Hype Machine. This was soon followed by a string of sold-out shows as a live favorite across the United States, Europe and Australia, including major festival appearances at Glastonbury, Coachella (twice) and Bestival.

Porter Robinson & Madeon!!!

portermadeon

Speculation and rumors of a collaboration between musicians and longtime friends Porter Robinson and Madeon (Hugo Leclercq) have long been internet fan fodder.

The duo put the rumors to rest dropping a surprise joint single “Shelter” (ft. Madeon on lead vocals) and announce a joint North American that will see the two share the stage for a collaborative live performance ft. music from both artist’s catalogs reworked and re-imagined for the stage.

Each made a name for themselves as solo artists who redefined electronic music from the inside out, expanding the genre from the festival stage to the pop charts and bringing electronic music into the global mainstream with their critically acclaimed debut solo albums, Porter’s Worlds (2014, Astralwerks) and Madeon’s Adventure (2015, Columbia).

“Shelter”- a brilliant shimmering, humanity-infused electronic pop – comes at a serendipitous time for the two young artists and sees the duo taking a hands-on approach to the songwriting process. To write, the two decamped to Madeon’s studio in Nantes, France  and the two wrote together in real-time, face-to-face, taking a decidedly old-school approach to the collaboration, inspiring and challenging one-another along the way. The result, “Shelter” is an ode to family ties as much as it’s a pop song that epitomizes their friendship.

madeonporter

“Both Porter and I started working with people in-person when we started making our respective albums and appreciated how much more collaborative you can get,” Madeon explains of their decision to work together. “Our intent was to make music that would reflect our friendship.”

“I see enthusiasm and inspiration as the most important currency you can have when you’re making music,” Porter adds. “It’s this weird sensation of being drunk on your own confidence and excitement that leads to so many creative breakthroughs. That effect was really exaggerated when we were working together.”

While this collaboration is a first for the two artists, they have played a pivotal role in each other’s work over the past decade of their young careers, providing feedback—sometimes brutally honest—about each other’s solo work. This laid the groundwork for a successful partnership. Having first met on an internet message board a decade ago as young Daft Punk fans who wanted to produce music, Porter and Madeon have pursued distinct but coincidentally parallel careers to become electronic music creators of their own, each has emerged out of the electronic music scene to become crossover electronic pop powerhouses.

Porter first caught the ears of tastemakers in 2010 with his track “Say My Name.” An EP on Skrillex’s OWSLA label followed and he signed to the venerated Astralwerks in 2013 when he was all of 21. The next year he released his debut artist album, Worlds, an expansive LP that included the songs “Divinity” (as heard in Google’s “Year in Search” commercial) and the landmark “Sea of Voices.” Worlds debuted in Billboard’s Top 20 and prompted the launch of the Worlds Tour, an interactive live show as ambitious at the album it was named for.

Madeon first came to global attention with his game-changing video and track “Pop Culture” in 2011. Early last year, he released his highly-anticipated debut album, Adventure, which spawned the singles “You’re On,” co-written with Jimmy Napes (Sam Smith, Disclosure), and “Home.” Having sharpened his live skills as an opener for Lady Gaga and with sets at Coachella and Lollapalooza, Madeon launched two tours in support of Adventure: Adventure Live and the Pixel Empire Tour.

To support the release of “Shelter” Porter and Madeon kick off a joint tour this Fall (dates below / more TBA) that will see the two share the stage for a collaborative live performance that combines the best of their individual catalogs into one interactive performance fusing emotion, live instrumentation, visual artistry and cutting edge technology. Fans will get to hear old favorites, newly re-worked cuts from Worlds and Adventure, a few surprises, and of course an emotional and affirming live delivery of “Shelter.”

The single and the forthcoming joint North American tour captures both artists as they enter a new phase of their respective careers.

Courtland & Watson – “Pressure” (Jason Forte Mix)

CandW

Courtland & Watson have released a banger in their latest offering, “Pressure” that received a special mix from label boss, Jason Forte. “Pressure,” combines three of the supreme talents on the Eclypse Records roster, and is a progressive house track filled with melodic verses and high energy choruses.

Watson is an up and coming DJ based out of Toronto, Ontario and is currently preparing for the release of his solo projects due out by year’s end. At only 19 years of age, he has made a name for himself as a DJ and music producer, primed to have a breakout year in 2016.

Courtland was born in Palm Springs, California and worked as a real estate agent. However, music was always his true passion in life, so he decided to attend Icon Collective Production School where he learned the ins and outs of sound engineering and production. Courtland joined the school’s impressive alumni network that includes MAKJ, Dillon Francis, Protohype, and APEK, leading into 2015, when he performed at Coachella and went on tour with Breathe Carolina, Feenixpawl and APEK. Video: Prayers – “Black Leather”

prayers

“Cholo goth duo Prayers have shared the video for their single “Black Leather,” featuring tattoo artist Kat Von D (who also sings on the song). In the clip, frontman Leafar Seyer wields a snake and also visits the cemetery and a goth nightclub.” – Pitchfork

“The Cholo Goth movement is real, and Prayers are some crazy motherfuckers.”  – Noisey

“Prayers pull from darkest dance elements with touches of the Pet Shop Boys and Bowie thrown in to lift the mix.”   The Huffington Post

“Pioneers behind a musical genre and growing subculture”   LA Weekly

Following the reveal of new single “Black Leather” ft. Kat Von D  via Zane Lowe’s Beats 1, earlier this week, San Diego’s iconic cholo goth electronic/rock duo, Prayers, drop the official “Black Leather” video and announce their forthcoming Baptism Of Thieves EP with Pitchfork today heading into the band’s upcoming Coachella appearance (Sunday April 24th, 1:40pm @ Mohave Stage).

“Black Leather” is the first new music from Prayers since 2015’s “Young Gods” and the first single off the duo’s forthcoming 2016 EP Baptism of Thieves.

Fueled by pulsating synthesizers, metallic percussion and oscillating bass with frontman and Prayers’ creative force Leafar Seyer’s trademark howl, the hook-driven track explores themes of angst and alienation in the band’s post-industrial-electronic, cholo-goth signature style. Kat Von D lends vocals to the track and also features in video.

Speaking exclusively to Pitchfork, Seyer explains his inspiration: “‘Black Leather’ is my way of celebrating everything that I’ve had to leave behind for my true self to emerge. Every man and every woman is a star but I’ve become the universe.”

Directed by Gavin Filipiak and conceptualized by Seyer, the stark black and white video is rife with evocative imagery exploring catholicism, cholo culture, and the interplay between life and death.

Prayers will bring their mesmerizing live performance to Coachella on Sunday, April 24th, 1:40pm on the Mojave Stage.

baptism of thieves

Baptism Of Thieves EP Track List

2. Underneath The Stars
3. Smiles Mask Tears
4. Lucifer Rising
5. Beauty and Bedlam
6. Pyramids

Founded in 2013 by Rafael Reyes and Dave Parley, Prayers are the first band to coin the term “cholo goth” to define their musical genre. Exploring the harsh realities of gang/street life over throbbing beats, their music defies stereotypes within the goth and cholo subcultures all the while creating their own underground scene.

Listen: New Music from MiM0SA

mimosa

Today, MiM0SA announces his new album Future Trill Vol 2. and reveals the first track of the album “Boss Shit” ft Bun B from UGK.

“Boss Shit” ft Bun B is for sale on iTunes today HERE and down below you can stream the song via Soundcloud.

Tigran Mimosa is a young voice echoing the generation of youth raised on early hip-hop and Grime.  Born in Armenia and brought to Los Angeles at age three, he was thrown into a survivalist situation facing the harsh realities of a new country. Being an only child to a single mom as well as an immigrant produced an ambitious street kid. At the tender age of seventeen, Tigran went north to the illustrious city of San Francisco. At a time when most kids were getting out of high school he was already knee deep in the epicenter of a vast and eclectic underground music scene. San Francisco, the legendary city of pioneers and innovators, had a quick yet sudden transformational effect – swept up in the chaos, MiM0SA was born.

Working with a myriad of synth lines and harmonic melodies, he carved out a niche by layering these with the signature 808 kick. Ultimately inspired by the west coast patriarch’s of hip-hop from the Bay to LA, his musical creations had the unique voice that only a conglomerate of different influences could create. Embodying the newness of street youth and bay area underground culture, Mimosa immediately caught the ear of a small underground label called Muti Music. To follow was a prolific four EPs and an album between 2008 and 2010, which immediately earned him accolades as a live performer, chalking up early triumphs at the Lightning In A Bottle Festival, Red Rocks and Coachella.

In 2011, MiM0SA started his empire with his personal record label, False Idol Musik.  Through this came the release of his second album, Sanctuary.  His live gigs also traveled east during these few years, attracting thousands of fans and proving West Coast underground could not only resonate, but also was a party staple across the country. In 2012 his performance garnered him amongst the “top ten acts at Bonnaroo” from Spin magazine.

In 2013, MiM0SA came hard with evolution of his sound launching a free concept album entitled Future Trill Vol. 1. He conceptualized the idea of “future trill” as being an umbrella term for the genre of music and the diversified tracks within. Therefore his much-anticipated new album is aptly named Future Trill Vol. 2 and contains a diverse multiform compilation of tracks. Featured on the album is Houston rapper Bun B of UGK with whom MiM0SA admits having, “pursued with a determination to collaborate”. Traveling to Texas with a suitcase of cash and a hard drive full of beats, he sought out and conquered. MiM0SA and the underground rapper went to work and in what would be described as luck or magic a potent musical union was formed.  Within a thirty-minutes the epic single “Boss Shit” was recorded to be released this August 2014 on Future Trill Vol. 2.

Today, MiM0SA resides in Los Angeles, occupying a spacious former Buddhist temple equipped with ample studio set-up. He’s graced the stages of major venues around the world.  Life’s journey from a street rat hood kid to future trill patron instilled an eager sense toward constant evolution and a dedication to the underground. Inspiration and devotion walk hand and hand to solidify the beginning chapter of MiM0SA.

This is a story yet to be told about an artist creating his own revolution with sound.
