Matt Nathanson’s new album Modern Love comes on the heels of 2007’s break-out success Some Mad Hope, which catapulted the San Francisco-based Nathanson from darling of the touring circuit with a devoted cult following to a bonafide hit maker and one of the premiere songwriters on the music scene today. Known for his legendary live shows that are both wildly funny and emotionally provocative, Nathanson took a year off the road to record Modern Love – the first break he has taken from touring in his 15 year career. The success of Some Mad Hope and “Come On Get Higher” gave Nathanson a sense of accomplishment and confidence that allowed him to take a new approach to Modern Love, taking bigger risks and diving deeper into his vast array of musical influences. The writing process started by exploring songs that were more physical and groove-based, drawing from influences such as Depeche Mode, ACDC and Talking Heads. By the time the eleven songs, written and produced with his longtime collaborator Mark Weinberg, were completed, Nathanson was marveling at the new territory they had covered. From the “Depeche Mode groove” in “Mercy (Less Drowning, More Land)” to the ecstatic opening track and first single “Faster,” to the soaring “Run,” which features Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, Modern Love is a luminous and bold departure.

New Video: ANR – “It’s Around You”

Click image to check out the video on RollingStone.com

Miami duo ANR just released their full-length Stay Kids (Deluxe Edition) on 10k Islands and Rolling Stone has premiered the video for the soulful, hurricane-inspired ballad “It’s Around You.”

Stay Kids is a rhythmically propulsive, psychedelic trip that was inspired largely by recent floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, and other environmental disasters.  Much of the album’s lyrics meditate on how such ‘natural’ disasters affect individuals and humanity at large.  However, sonically-speaking the album is by no means morose.  Instead, the synth-heavy and often danceable material feels triumphant.  Each song is a journey through carefully sculpted, dreamy pop soundscapes with frequent, unexpected and exciting detours.

Though the band consists of merely two members – Brian Robertson (Keys, Vocals) and Michael-John Hanock (Vocals, Drums) –they create a powerful sound filled with layered melodies and bountiful hooks.  It has landed them shows with bands like Animal Collective, Neon Indian, No Age, and Fucked Up.

Hancock elaborates on the inspiration behind and creation of “It’s Around You”:

“This started out real simple, with just the vocal loop and thoughts of how it’s been six years since a major hurricane hit South Florida. The idea of the song, and the chorus in particular, is to sonically, and even lyrically connect with the traditional half time modern R&B crowd participation song style, but to have the actual concept of the song relating to evacuation procedures during a natural disaster. The chorus is telling people how to use their hands, feet, and voices to signal a helicopter from the roof of a house or building. What’s “around you” in this case is water and debris. Our friend Jillian Mayer directed the video and has come up with a lot of cool ways of illustrating the meaning of the song, while visually keeping it up-beat, like Brian did with the production of the song.”

Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone

Click video above to watch the trailer for Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone

When Fishbone first emerged from California, no other band sounded or looked like them, and the weight of their innovative and iconic presence is still being felt decades later.  Coinciding with the group’s 25th anniversary, filmmakers Lev Anderson & Chris Metzler have directed a compelling new documentary, narrated by Laurence Fishburne.  Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone is both a fascinating and brutally honest look at the band’s history for longtime fans, as well as a perfect entry point for newcomers.

Pale Griot Films is proud to present the US Theatrical release of Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone in New York and Los Angeles this October.  The film had its World Premiere at the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival, and went on to screen at the SXSW Film & Music festival, among many others.  Everyday Sunshine will open on October 7th at the ReRun Theater in Brooklyn, NY, and on October 21st at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in Los Angeles, CA.  Many other cities (including Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, DC) will follow.  The band is also celebrating their 25th anniversary with the release of their much-anticipated new EP, Crazy Glue, out on October 11th on DC Jam Records.

Everyday Sunshine is a documentary about the band Fishbone, musical pioneers who have been rocking on the margins of pop culture for the past 25 years.  From the streets of South Central-Los Angeles and the competitive Hollywood music scene of the 1980’s, the band rose to prominence, only to fall apart when on the verge of “making it.”

Laurence Fishburne narrates Everyday Sunshine, an entertaining cinematic journey into the personal lives of this unique Black rock band, and an untold story of fiercely individual artists in their quest to reclaim their musical legacy while debunking the myths of young Black men from urban America.  Highlighting the parallel journeys of a band and their city, Everyday Sunshine explores the personal and cultural forces that gave rise to California’s legendary Black punk sons that continue to defy categories and expectations.

At the heart of Fishbone’s story is lead singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher who show how they keep the band rolling, out of pride, desperation and love for their art.  To overcome money woes, family strife, and the strain of being aging Punk rockers on the road, Norwood and Angelo are challenged to re-invent themselves in the face of dysfunction and ghosts from a painful past.

The documentary includes interviews with: Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ice-T (rapper), Branford Marsalis (saxophonist), Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros), Questlove (The Roots), and more.

Newest Love: Pajama Club

Pajama Club, the new band from Crowded House and Split Enz frontman Neil Finn, are getting to release their self-titled debut album this Tuesday September 13th on Lester Records/Redeye.  For a taste of what to expect check out the band’s eye-popping video for opening track “Tell Me What You Want.”  The track is a tete-a-tete between singers Neil and his wife Sharon Finn, who coyly blend heaving breathing and falsetto vocals.

Like “Tell Me What You Want,” the rest of the album, the song is anchored by a massive rhythms and quirky electronics, topped off by Neil and Sharon’s back-and-forth vocals. The pair have an alluring natural chemistry that forms the core of the band.  Pajama Club has a wonderfully spontaneous feel to it, which stems from the way in which it was recorded.  The skeleton of the songs were formed when Neil and Sharon began jamming together just for fun at home, drinking wine, wearing pajamas and realizing they had something going on, bigger than just raw grooves.

Eventually Neil added additional layers of guitar, keys, and other melodic lines to the bare-bones songs while he toured with Crowded House in 2009.  The final piece of the puzzle came when Sean Donnelly began rounding out the tracks with electronic loops and texture, in a similarly independent, creative, and organic fashion that Neil and Sharon had first begun.

Pajama Club’s debut bursts with a joyous, free spirited energy at every turn.  However it is Neil and Sharon’s impeccable melodies that bring it all together – burrowing in the listener’s brain while giving each song an immediate likeability.

Newest Love: SuperHeavy

SuperHeavy,  consisting of Damien Marley, Dave Stewart, Mick Jagger, A.R. Rahman and Joss Stone, has released the highly anticipated self-titeld album for pre-order via iTunes.

Mick Jagger has teamed up with Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart, soul singer Joss Stone, Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack composer A.R.Rahman and reggae star Damian Marley to form a band cooperative project called SuperHeavy. This diverse and eclectic line up who share eleven Grammy Awards between them, have been recording together in various studios around the world, with the majority of the tracks on the project laid down over three weeks in Los Angeles earlier this year.

It’s little wonder that Stewart refers to SuperHeavy as, “A mad alchemist type experiment”. Fusing the talents of one of the greatest front-men of all time, a two time Academy award winning Indian composer, a soul vocal prodigy, a three time Grammy winning reggae star, and one of the most sought after producers in the world, you would expect the explosive results to defy categorisation.

SuperHeavy came together after Jagger and Stewart considered what a band comprising of musicians from different genres would sound like. Jagger explains, “Dave really wanted to make a record with a different group of musicians, in other words, with different backgrounds of music. Instead of everyone being a rock musician, or a blues musician, or some other genre, he wanted to get as many genres together that would fit. I said it sounds like a good idea, I never thought it would actually happen.”

Despite their disparate backgrounds, they instantly connected and hit the ground running, writing twenty-two songs in the first six days. Stone was thrilled with the results, “That’s what you need, all these opinionated people who have been brilliant in their own field, shove them together and see what comes out. It’s really unexpected, it’s mind blowing,” she enthuses.

However, despite the free flow of creative juices and the easy rapport they established, getting the band together in one place became very difficult, as Stewart explains, “It’s the most complicated record ever made. Imagine, some of it’s recorded in LA, some of it’s recorded in the South of France, some of it’s recorded off the coast of Cyprus, some of it’s recorded in Turkey, some of it’s recorded in Miami, some of it’s recorded in the Caribbean, and some of it’s recorded in Chennai, in India.”

The project needed a name. Marley had been riffing the term “SuperHeavy”, inspired by Muhammad Ali being the super heavy weight champion of the world and the phrase became the band’s catchphrase, “It was Mick who said, ‘Why don’t we call it SuperHeavy?”, recalls Stewart, “We all thought about it for ages and then it sort of stuck.”

Back to that alchemical experiment, Jagger, Stewart, Marley, Rahman and Stone appear to have created a new genre. It’s a new kind of music, it’s a new genre, one that cannot be placed” says Stone. Yet, Jagger is keen to point out the music is accessible, “It’s very approachable. If you’re a Rolling Stones fan there’s definitely stuff you can relate to.”

As far as the future of SuperHeavy goes, “We haven’t planned to do a tour or anything, but if people really like it maybe we will. We’d love to get out and play some of it live,” says Jagger humbly. “As soon as we started playing together in the studio it gelled, and all these different styles didn’t seem to be a problem to make them fit together… I hope people will like it….”

I know I like what I’ve heard so far…and can’t wait to hear the rest! The band’s self-titled album will be in stores September 20, 2011.
