New Music: Caveman

After revealing tracks with Fader and Pitchfork, the rising New York band Caveman exclusively premiered two new tracks with Stereogum and Nylon MagazineStereogum calls Caveman’s “Decide”  “breezy, infectious folk-pop / Heavy Rotation” and Nylon Magazine described the luscious “Easy Water” as follows: “newcomers Caveman, the Brooklyn band that’s gaining massive buzz despite the fact that the group is only a little more than a year old. With lullaby vocals and woozy melodies.”

  • Download “Decide” HERE
  • Download “Easy Water” HERE

Mark your calendars for more new track premieres: “A Country’s King of Dreams”via MTV Hive on 8/31 and “My Room” via Rolling Stone on 9/5.

Opening with “A Country’s King of Dreams,” the band explores honey-sweet, country-tinged vocal melodies over tribal drumming. “My Time” is a slow-building pop gem, with lead singer Matthew Iwanusa’s vocals weaving in and out of band’s backing vocals. Caveman’s lush four-part harmonies, spaced-out guitars, and inventive percussion come together perfectly on the tracks “Easy Water” and “My Room.”

The band puts on a must-see live show; as you can read in this amazing Consequence of Sound live review HERE from the Chicago show last week (and I will be going to see on Thursday 9/1). Currently on tour with The War on Drugs, they’ll be back in New York for their digital album release show at the Mercury Lounge on Thursday, September 15th.

In honor of the New York five-piece’s debut release, Pitchfork revealed another stand out track from Caveman’s debut CoCo Beware “Thankful” HERE. The band has already made “Old Friend” (my favorite!) available as a free download, premiering the track with Fader Magazine. Click HERE to hear the track.

Caveman is:
Matthew Iwanusa (lead vocals, guitar, drums)
Jimmy “Cobra” Carbonetti (guitar)
Stefan Marolachakis (drums, vocals)
Sam Hopkins (synthesizer, vocals)
Jeff Berrall (bass, vocals)

LIVE: Cut Copy

Months ago when I saw in an email that Cut Copy was coming, I immediately made my arrangements to attend. Finally, they were coming! I couldn’t believe it and I had to be there. Thank goodness I was, too, because they put on a helluva show. I got a prime spot towards the front where I could see and still be relatively comfortable. The venue was filled. Everyone was excited and sweaty with anticipation.

Then the quartet of dudes entered the stage. The crowd was on point; ready and in dance mode. “Where I’m Going” from the latest album, Zonoscope, was played at the beginning of the set. I like that it was thrown into the beginning for some measure against some of the lesser known songs. They all led up to the second half of the show, which was more pleasing than pink starburst.

Dan Whitford stood there belting out songs while a fan (a literal, electric fan; not a person…haha, although I would have done it. I love you, Dan!) blew air through his luscious hair, evoking images of a cheesy 80s heart throb movie. In fact, I read an interview online from Seattle Gay News where the writer asked what the secret is to Dan’s hair. Guitarist, Tim Hoey answered saying Whitford’s actually working on his own hair line. Jokingly, Hoey added, “he basically modeled it on the bad kid from Karate Kid.”

“Lights and Music” broke out, and when it did, everyone went completely ape shit! I get chills just thinking about the seconds leading up to the first chorus. Just picture everyone in a movie theater sitting on the edge of their seat, waiting for that crucial moment you know will happen. I nodded my head along with the beat of the 5 second interval before all broke loose. The lights start blinking different neon colors, everyone is fiercely dancing and screaming while Dan Whitford is loudly singing “Lights and Music, are on my mind.” It’s definitely one of my FAVORITE concert moments.

Whitford keeps going, “Fading with the color you see in my face, cold and crystal you can’t hide ‘cuz your tears race. I’ll be waiting by in time, put your dreams away. You’re holding hope open for the one making you wait.” At this point, everyone is clapping with the beat, ready for the next chorus again. The cheering, screaming and clapping all gets louder and faster. I remember dancing fluidly as one with the crowd while smiling and laughing like a little girl the whole time. Wondrous.

After that serving of hotness, the band moved on with “Take Me Over,” another crowd pleaser. They just kept coming after that. “Out There on the Ice” and “Hearts on Fire” blew me away and left me dazed and dumbfounded. Cut Copy had us all in the palms of their hands. It was a big, sweaty dance party. All of my favorites were played. Plus, they came back out TWICE to play ONE more song. And they totally jammed out, too. If you have a chance to catch one of their shows, you better go. I mean, I would go even if they only played “Lights and Music,” it’s that awesome. I couldn’t have asked for a better set list. I came, I saw and I danced (my ass off).

New Video: The War on Drugs – “Baby Missiles”

Click image to watch the video for "Baby Missiles"

Philadelphia’s The War On Drugs’ sophomore album of mile-high rock anthems, Slave Ambient, is due out August 16th on Secretly Canadian. We’ve shared with you the album’s instant classic, part Springsteen, part motorik anthem, “Baby Missiles,” and now you can watch that song come to life with its video. Like the song itself, and much of Slave Ambient, for that matter, the video has the same steering wheel-tapping movement, windows down, feeling the breeze on a summer day vibe.

The “Baby Missiles” video is culled and edited from The War On Drugs’ main man Adam Granduciel’s collection of super 8 film footage. The kaleidoscopic work throughout finds its raw source material in Granduciel’s experimental medium format photography, the very same exposed film featured on the artwork for Slave Ambient. The video is directed by Labour and produced by Greencard Pictures.

Lovin’ this song!

Newest Love: Caveman

Gino DePinto, AOL

Caveman is pleased to announce the digital release of their debut album CoCo Beware on September 13th, followed by the physical CD and vinyl release on November 15th. Exploding out of the New York scene over the last few months, the band has decided to get this “hot off the presses” album out as soon as possible via a digital self-release. The fans wanted it, so the fans get it — a straight-ahead ethos for a band that’s about the music FIRST.

In honor of the New York five-piece’s first release, the band has made “Old Friend” available as a free download, premiering the track with Fader Magazine this morning. Recorded and produced by Nick Stumpf (French Kicks), CoCo Beware showcases the dreamy chamber pop and multi-part harmonies that have been turning heads at the band’s live shows for the better part of a year. Leading up to the release of their debut, Caveman will also be heading out on tour with The War On Drugs, hitting the east coast, midwest and Canada before returning to New York to celebrate their album release at the Mercury Lounge on Thursday, September 15th.

Listen/download: Caveman – “Old Friend”

For Caveman, the last year and half have been a whirlwind. Formed in New York back in January of 2010, the band has gone from relative unknowns to opening for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, White Rabbits, Here We Go Magic, Cursive, Wye Oak and Yuck in a little under a year. Listening to CoCo Beware, it’s easy to see why the band has garnered so much attention in such a short period of time. Caveman’s lush four-part harmonies, spaced-out guitars, and inventive percussion come together perfectly on the tracks “Easy Water” and “My Room.”

To get a further taste of the album, watch the quintet perform their tracks “Vampirer/Old Friend” at the Fader Fort HERE. Also, in a more public setting, Caveman run through “Decide” on FADER.tv HERE. And you can see a live version of “Easy Water” on IFC HERE.

New Download: O’Death’s “Bugs”

Check out this new video from O’Death: Filmed on the coast of Maine, the video depicts a duo of mysterious, masked individuals, in abstract journey and ritual, seemingly swallowed by darkness. Simultaneously colorful and dark, the video is the perfect companion to the evocative song.

O’Death is a 6 member American folk rock band from Brooklyn. Today they are beginning an extensive tour in support of their new album, Outside. Everyone knows I’m not too big on folk music, but I am loving these guys. With the usage of a banjo, fiddle and ukulele, their music is more upbeat and happier than other “folk” music. I cannot wait to go see these guys JAM out when they’re here in Pittsburgh next month. If you have the chance to make it to one of their shows, you should take up on it, it’s sure to be a great time.

Check It Out: Kellee Maize

I’d like to introduce you to an up & coming female rapper from right here in Pittsburgh! Her name’s Kellee Maize, and without being signed, she’s managed to captivate a following with over 400,000 album downloads and a #1 spot on Amazon.com.

Check out this video and learn a bit about Kellee by reading her own words below:

My mom always said, I “was dancing and singing before she could walk and talk.” I began to rap and perform at a young age to entertain myself and escape reality. My childhood best friend helped me form my first rap group called Thunder and Lightning at age 9.  We mostly just argued about who was Thunder and who was Lightning, but we did record a few cassettes and give them to our parents with our pictures on them.

Despite incredibly loving parents who I would die for, I always had a bit of an “alien” mentality as I was only one of two people I knew until age 18 that was adopted. To this day, I know very little about my biological family.  This has always had a very deep effect on who I am and how I deal with life.  However, I feel like it was part of the plan and feel blessed to be a Maize.

I moved to Pittsburgh in my teens with the dream of making an impact on the world. I just felt drawn to the city, like there was something waiting for me here. I learned more about the negative sides of our society through study at the University of Pittsburgh. At that time, Hip Hop was solidified as my passion and outlet for activism. I also experienced watching my mom go through a vicious near death bout with cancer and used writing as a means to cope. I began singing and rapping on stage in 2000 and have not stopped since.

However, a sense of not being able to make any real change, a lack of confidence, and a lack of financial stability pushed me into the workforce full-time and on a spiritual journey. This period of my life proved to be a unique opportunity to grow, become inspired and learn the industry. I worked at the Pittsburgh City Paper right after college where I helped a lot of local artists, planned events and learned all about being a promoter.  I eventually became the Events and Promotions Director, but then the sudden death of my father during this time changed everything. After my dad passed and my birth mom was not responding to my attempts to connect with her, I again turned to music as a way to cope. I also turned to work and my interest in bringing women together as a way to deal with my father’s death.

I founded a female owned and operated, socially conscious company, Nakturnal. I founded Nakturnal in hopes of helping woman work together in pursuit of their dreams and because I learned through spiritual study that when women gather, the world will heal.  It is a prophetic message almost every indigenous culture stands behind as well as many major religions.  I also felt like it was time to secure a better income to be able to help my mom in the future.  She is employed at a factory in my home town and it is my dream to be able to get her involved in some aspect of my business so she doesn’t have to work so hard.

For over two years now, Nakturnal has been considered a leading marketing and events organization in the the area. We work daily to inspire women, help independent artists and raise awareness for worthy causes. We have been expanding nationally. In the meantime, I found more time to record and perform, and released my first album, Age of Feminine with the help of DJ Huggy. I released my second album, Aligned Archetype, nationally on January 29th, 2010. This album highlights my mystical side and brings together my other musical passions including dubstep, house, reggae, Bmore club, R&B and of course Hip Hop. It is a concept album that is was inspired by a tarot card reading. I consider myself a spiritual person and now see activism on an energetic level that starts within so I work on my SELF daily. I study the power of intention, meditation, yoga, quantum physics, astrology, tarot and other forms of mysticism. I feel my outer purpose in life is to make music that sends out good energy that speaks to the soul of the listener. I believe massive global change is coming and that it starts with the individual. I feels Pittsburgh, my home, is a focal point in this planetary change and that women and female energy in men and women will help us enter a new stage.

I feel that our inner world is a mirror of our outer reality. We have the power to help positively affect the world by “being the change we wish to see,” as Ghandi puts it. While this can be incredibly challenging given our human tendencies and emotions, I believe we are entering a new stage of evolution in human consciousness and hope that in the same way I am affected daily by artists and musicians that my music inspires change and awareness in the listener. I feel all people have special gift that will be a piece in the puzzle and that we are all made of the same energy and therefore are really all one. I know deep down that music and art will usher in the peaceful revolution we need from our current fear stricken society. I feel we can enjoy this time/space reality while opening hearts and minds and creating lasting change.

Girl Talk at Stage AE

Pittsburgh native Greg Gillis (better known as Girl Talk) was the first to give a show at brand new Stage AE next to Heinz Field. I love everything about Girl Talk and with this being my third show, I was excited to see how all would fare in the new venue.

Show Review: Plants and Animals

Post classic rock is the descriptive term the members of Plants and Animals sometimes use when categorizing their band. Some might refer to it as plain and general indie rock (but really, what can’t be called that?) or a jam band. They can be called all of these genres; what matters is that this 3-piece band ROCKS.
