Brand New: Stream Cold War Kids “Miracle Mile”

cwk

Cold War Kids are excited to announce the release of their fourth studio album, Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, on April 2, 2013 via Downtown Records (and via MapleMusic Recordings in Canada). In anticipation of the release, the band is currently streaming the album’s engaging lead single, Miracle Mile.

Stream: Cold War Kids – “Miracle Mile”

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts came to life at the band’s San Pedro, CA studio space. They enlisted new guitar player, Dann Gallucci (Murder City Devils, Modest Mouse) and Lars Stalfors to produce.   “We were shaken up, ready to let certain songs go further than before by trying new styles and arrangements, while keeping others sparse and caring more about the finished product and less about how we got there,” says lead singer Nathan Willett.

The band will release trailers, from the making of their record, each week leading up to April 2nd. Trailers 1 and 2 are available now on their website. They truly encapsulate the energy that Cold War Kids bring to their live performances and it are those performances which remain the heart of the band.

Check ‘Em Out: ON AN ON

Newly-formed indie group ON AN ON are pleased to unleash “Ghosts,” the first song off their forthcoming debut album, Give In, which is due out January 29 on Roll Call Records. The sound marks a new direction for ON AN ON’s three members – Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci and Ryne Estwing – who had been performing together for the last few years with the indie group Scattered Trees. It was only this past March during the annual SXSW festival that they decided to follow their instincts and change course, with conservative compromises being a thing of the past.

Just two weeks later, the band hunkered down in a Toronto studio with acclaimed producer Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene). With a knack for genre-melding, and a boundary-pushing mindset, Newfeld would prove to be the perfect match for the trio’s new caution-less approach: synthesizers, scattershot electro beats and ambient ear candy would give guitars, bass and drums a newfound ghostly sheen. The end result was Give In, ON AN ON’s ten-track debut album – a dream-washed textural journey armed with a biting perspective on life, love and the commonality of loss.

Video: The Rocketboys – “The Best”

Austin, TX’s anthemic indie-rock band The Rocketboys have released their first ever official video for the track “The Best”, which is the last song on their recently released album Build Anyway.

A true epilogue to the new record, singer Brandon Kinder comes to terms with his disappointment and anger towards former bandmates and even makes something of an apology for his pain: “You spent your time trying to make a better life, while I was spending mine making up bitter rhymes”; “All those words I wrote, they’ve already died…If I ever had brothers, I hope you know that you were them.”  It’s a fitting and powerful end to a soaring rock record that covers endless ground in the search for explanations for the fragmentation and almost-breakup of the band.

The Rocketboys also announce a Fall tour schedule for August-October which covers the Central and Eastern US. A co-headline tour with Bearcat, the tour is in support of Invisible Children and will make available limited edition I.C. posters.

With less guitar, more keyboards, more bass, deep vinyl grooves, twitching percussion and some good old cowbell – but still with those trademark melodies – Sweden’s The Concretes are finally back! This time armed with a new album, a new label (Brooklyn-based tastemakers Friendly Fire Recordings), a new singer (Lisa Milberg, though not new to the band, has stepped out from behind the drums to take over vocals for the band after the departure of Victoria Bergsman), and a new lease on life. Their dreamy, ethereal disco-influenced record WYWH will be out on November 8th.

Interpol Tour Changes

Due to some scheduling changes to U2’s tour schedule, Interpol has cancelled 11 of their shows that were previously scheduled. Fortunately, this does not affect Pittsburgh’s show (June 23rd) since U2 was not scheduled for a show here.

Here’s the ones that are now cancelled:

Des Moines, IA People’s Court
Cincinnati, OH Bogart’s
Cleveland, OH House Of Blues
Columbia, MO Blue Note
Athens, GA Watt Club
Charleston, SC The Music Farm
Baltimore, MD Ram’s Head Live
Providence, RI Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel
Haven, CT Toad’s Place
Clifton Park, NY Northern Lights
Lancaster, PA Chameleon

Also, Carlos Denger has left the band. He did contribute to their upcoming fourth album, but the band will replace him with a series of other bassists for their tour. Gladly, there were no hard feelings on this split.

Shiny Controversy

Upon hearing “Le Disko” and falling for a new synth band, I was excited about Shiny Toy Guns. Their album We Are Pilots got great exposure here in the States, after their third and final version was released.

So, just a week or two ago when I heard they had a new single “Ricochet” and a new album coming out in November, my excitement returned. Then, I also heard they had a new female lead singer. What?!

Previously, Carah Faye Charnow was the woman singing about riding racecars. Now, they’ve got another lady, Sisley Treasure. Now, I have to admit, I am just not as excited. After the prominence of her voice and the overall “sound” in their previous hits (esp. “Le Disko”), it’s going to take some gettin’ used to. “Ricochet” didn’t get me energized or feeling any of those good vibes. Maybe it’ll grow on me, maybe I’ll end up liking it, but right now…not so much. I think Treasure might have a tough road ahead, though. Tons of fans are just not happy**. Not to mention the fact that Treasure appeared on “The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll,” which is in a bit of a different direction than whatever Shiny Toy Guns is doing/going for.

Especially when I read this on ReadJunk.com:

“…we moved forward with our initial choice for co-lead singer of the band in 2002, longtime friend SISELY TREASURE. At that time she was still locked into her Dreamworks Records deal with her former project COOLER KIDS and we were not able to bring her in. So we have returned to the exact original idea and lineup that SHINY TOY GUNS was meant to be.”

Um, what? So, I’m sure none of the money you made and the exposure you’ve gotten has anything to do with Carah, right? Everything is going to be fine and dandy now that you have your Number 1 choice back. Or you could lose over half your fan base. But, at least you’re now what “was meant to be.”

There was much speculation on whether Charnow was fired, or if she was leaving to get married, or pursue a solo career. As it turns out, we still don’t really know the truth. She says it wasn’t her decision to leave the band. STG says that it was her choice or else she’d still be with the group. Regardless, she’s moved on to another band in Sweden. So, best of luck to her!

But, that’s not the first surprise! Nope…WHAT THE —-? Charnow wasn’t the first one to get chucked (or…not?). First was Ursula Vari! And who even knows why she got the boot! Do the men in Shiny Toy Guns get tired of looking at the same girl, or what?

Who knows?

But, if I were Sisley Treasure, I might be a little worried in another 2 years.

Shiny Toy Guns’ new album Season of Poison will be out November 4th.

**example of unhappiness concerning new singer from a blog commenter:

“Well I hope no one minds me saying this but the more I think about it, she has probably had a lucky escape because this group have shown themselves in their true colours and I think she is better than any of that. At first I didn’t know what to think but now I feel inclined in believing her side of what has happened here. I hope this new project she says she is working on turns out well for her. She’ll always have my support! :)”
