Listen: Tall Heights – “River Wider”

“[River Wider] is a pretty track with a nice cello line complementing a very catchy vocal melody, completing a folk-pop sound comparable to Sufjan Stevens or Fleet Foxes.”
Stereogum

Boston progressive folk duo Tall Heights have announced the release of their debut major label LP, Neptune, out August 19 on Sony Music Masterworks. Neptune is the follow up to 2015’s Holding On, Holding Out EP which was met with critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and Wall Street Journal who compared their emotive harmonies and poignant lyrics to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Sigur Ros and Bon Iver. Of particular note is the track “Spirit Cold”, the lead single from the forthcoming release which has quickly reached over 5.6 Million streams on Spotify.

But now, they’ve released another new track, “River Wider” and I gotta say, I like it waaaaaay better! Either that’s good….or bad. I don’t know??? Check it out here and see if you agree:

The multi-talented singer songwriters, composers, and instrumentalists featuring Paul Wright on cello/vocals and Tim Harrington on acoustic guitar/vocals got their start busking on the streets of Boston, growing up in a neighboring town in Massachusetts. Neptune is a far lusher construct than those early acoustic days — along with pristine and emotive vocal harmonies, there’s subtly chugging electric guitar and a spare descending bassline on “Iron in the Fire,” ethereal synthesizers and a spacious drum part on “Spirit Cold,” a brittle splash of percussion to open “Backwards and Forwards” and feedback created by two cellphones on “Cross My Mind.”

The band is on tour all summer through autumn including an opening slot for José González. For a taste of Tall Heights’ captivating live show, watch the band’s stunning live performance of album single “Spirit Cold”HERE.

Coleman Hell – “Flowerchild”

unnamed

Coleman Hell caught people’s attention last year with his breakout hit “2 Heads”, which has been streamed nearly 100 Million times across different platforms. His follow-up single, “Fireproof”, was released in late April and has already been streamed over 4 Million times. He has crafted a unique musical style, incorporating elements of folk, rock, dance, and pop and fusing electronic music with organic instrumentation.

Coleman’s new track, “Flowerchild”, continues this musical exploration. “We danced in the forest like flickering candles and ran our fingers across the trees. The fire crackled like a record in the 70s. And when the smoke clears you’ll be someone else. The person you leave behind will be sleeping like a baby, with daisies curling up your arms and roses in your eyes. Run wild you little flower child”

Along with his bandmates, La+ch and Michah, Coleman has spent much of the past year on the road, touring North America with Robert DeLong last fall before completing a US headline tour this Spring and recently selling out The Troubadour in LA following his appearances at Hangout Fest and Bottlerock Fest. He also supported Twenty One Pilots on their Spring Canadian tour and made a trip to the UK to play The Great Escape Festival. He is now appearing at a host of North American festivals over the summer, including Electric Forest, Summerfest, Pemberton, Wayhome, Osheaga, and Rifflandia.

Coleman Hell’s debut album will be released this summer via Columbia Records.

Must Watch! 360° Video from The Zolas for “Swooner”

“The four piece pop band from Vancouver are upbeat and undoubtedly having lighthearted fun with their music, and the song is layered in sugary harmonic vocals and melodies for you and your friends to get dark (or drunk) to.” VICE’s Noisey

“a danceable exploration into experimental indie pop” Culture Collide

Vancouver indie-pop darlings The Zolas have released a cutting-edge video for their fuzzed-out, guitar-driven pop anthem “Swooner”, which just reached #2 on the Canadian Alternative Chart this year. The interactive live video was shot on four GoPro cameras mounted in a special 360° tripod that allows the viewer to pan around the room and explore different viewpoints. Make sure to watch on Chrome or Firefox!

The Zolas’ Swooner LP, released this year via Light Organ Records, dives headlong into vibrant, experimental pop, showcased by stirring modern production, highlighted by flashes of grungy hard-panned guitars, Prince-like synth flourishes, eurodance vocals and electric pianos. The band is heading out on a North American tour in June, including a stop at NXNE Festival and Pemberton Music Festival.

Tour Dates:

6/14: Los Angeles, CA @ The Echo

tempertrap

The Temper Trap’s eagerly awaited third studio album Thick As Thieves is set for release June 10th on Glassnote Records. The band has released plans for an extensive North American tour in September/October following a series of select album release shows (SF, LA, NYC) in June. Tickets will be available for public sale beginning today via thetempertrap.com.  A full listing of the dates can be found below.

The album’s anthemic lead single Fall Together– dubbed “a powerhouse” tune by Billboard – has been given a dance-floor ready update by fellow Aussie act Just A Gent. The “Fall Together” Just A Gent Remix premiered and you can check that out below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVlB6eF2Y3A

Thick As Thieves marks the first time The Temper Trap has collaborated with outside songwriters in their history, with striking results. Justin Parker (Lana Del Rey, Sia, Bat For Lashes) worked on “Fall Together”, whilst the album also features collaborations with Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter), Malay, co-writer & producer of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange and Pascal Gabriel (Ladyhawke, Goldfrapp). Working with these exceptional producers and co-writers allowed The Temper Trap to explore a new musical ground while remaining true to their inimitable signature sound.

New Music: Ladyhawke – “Dangerous”

Ladyhawke_Cybele Malinowski_LoRes

Making international waves with her award-winning self-titled breakout album in 2008 and Anxiety in 2012, Ladyhawke aka Pip Brown will release her third studio album Wild Things on June 3 via Polyvinyl Records. She previously shared the exhilaratingly infectious single “A Love Song” and today fans are treated to a second album cut “Dangerous”. A brooding, synth-strapped dancefloor anthem, “Dangerous” premiered alongside a NYLON “Band Crush” feature yesterday.

Brown’s conviction to organic authenticity led her on this third album journey which started back in 2013. She scrapped a full album’s worth of material before taking around a year to craft the blissed-out Wild Things with producer Tommy English (Børns, Tiësto, Dark Waves), whom she met through her L.A. neighbor, tattoo artist/musician Kat Von D. Ladyhawke kicks off a national US tour on June 21st in Boston.

Video: Wray – “Pined”

wray

In tradition with their captivating visuals on screen, WRAY is back with the video for “Pined,” a witchy tale reminiscent of the down-South gothic first season of True Detective. The Birmingham, Alabama trio have been working on the video under the creative direction of director Dillon Hayes.

David Brown from WRAY weighs in on the music video:

“Pined is a reflection on the dichotomy between looking past and looking forward. It’s meditative in sound and concept. I think the video fits this reflection well. Dillon (Hayes) worked with us to create a unique narrative that is as vague as it is expansive. We want to show an alternative perspective to the typical southern landscape, and get lost in it; which we did. Filmed in some truly beautiful locations in the heart of Alabama, it was a pleasure.”

The track features singer/bassist David Brown’s ghostly vocals set to steady, charging percussion and dark, lurid harmonies. “’Pined’ started out very different than how it ended up on the album”, Brown said of the track, “The melody was there, but the arrangement was truly refined in the process of recording. That sets it apart from other tracks.”

WRAY is one of those rare bands that effortlessly blend smart sonic pluralities into a seamless whole without losing any of their DIY grit. It is clear that lead singer/bass player David Brown, guitarist David Swatzell, and drummer Blake Wimberly have harnessed their sound and created a cohesive and ghostly record.

This album is filled with haunting vocals, constant guitar and soft percussion that explores a space of subtle contrasts and originality. The first single off of the LP is the title track, “Hypatia”, which relays the sound of the entire LP. The single communicates the dream-like undertones and romantic lyrics in a quiet and subtle approach. With tracks like “May 23rd” and “Pined”, WRAY proves their ability to create rhythmic songs while staying true to the overall feel of the LP.

New Music From Digitalism!

Digitalism

Following a Hype Machine No.1 with first single “Utopia”, Pete Tong’s ‘Essential New Tune’ on BBC Radio 1, Digitalism unleash new track “Go Time”.

Saying that Hamburg hailing Digitalism’s third album Mirage stems from “the ecstasy” of “epic trips around the globe” is no overstatement. 10 years of touring, creating and scouting inspiration have cut a path for the duo that sits somewhere between nostalgia and futurism. This comes to a head in the second single off the album, “Go Time”, further proof of their ever-increasing appetite for adventure.

An indisputable pre-weekend anthem, it’s a huge track. Stemming from one simple loop, it evolved into “this huge stadium indie thing” as Jence and Isi put it. Leaving any stagnant competitors well behind them, Digitalism have tapped into that Thursday-night-feeling, yearning for a weekend yet to begin. This is the theme of the track: “Let’s get Friday out of the way”, chants a euphoric chorus, deliciously raw. Taking on this mantra, John Tejada and Mumbai Science have both delivered tasty remixes, with the latter creating an inescapably bouncy sound grounded in the youthful grit of “Go Time”.

Taking wistful electronica to new heights, expect a contemporary indie twist that keeps hold of a good dose of synth-mania. The old school finesse of hits like “Zdarlight” and “Pogo” are evident in both “Go Time” and first single “Utopia”, with a decade of knowledge gained over a career full to the brim with both live and studio magic.

“Go Time for us means ‘pressing the start button’ on your life and going for it” – and go for it they have. After a few years of doing everything from storming Coachella to a solid residency at London’s XOYO where they play live on April 28th, the album was whipped up in a cool 6 months, starting in February 2015. Its swift conception is clearly a reflection of their need to share this creative output with the world, and if “Go Time” is representative of the whole album, we should be just as eager to hear it as Digitalism were to make it.

Digitalism Live Tour Dates:

Video: Gin Wigmore – “Willing To Die” ft. Suffa, Logic

GW

“Sounds like heaven”  – Stereogum
“Retro-soul that feels totally refreshing.” – NYLON
“Shades of blues, jazz and even electronic music without missing a beat.”  – Noisey
“Makes you want to channel all of your frustrations into dancing the night away.”  – Teen Vogue
“Intense and uninhibited” – Billboard

Following the release of her critically acclaimed album Blood To Bone, New Zealand-born/Los Angeles-based Gin Wigmore is set to kick off her largest North American tour yet next week in D.C. on March 27th. A unique breed of soul infused rock ‘n’ roll with a fierce attitude to match, Gin’s latest work was an international success that saw Top-40 airplay in both Australia and New Zealand + over 23 million streams across platforms worldwide.

Gin’s latest single “Willing To Die” featuring Suffa and Hilltop Hoods’ Logic is accompanied by a captivating and empowering video in which the artist lays bare her own vulnerabilities. Gin explains:

“‘Willing To Die’ warranted a strong, bare-all (literally!) approach. I wanted to have a go at breaking down the false sense of security, acceptance, and short-lived happiness we, as humans, feel will come from indulging in materialism. It’s not the things we buy, the big house we dream of or the expense of the clothes we wear. It is about taking that scary first step in figuring out who we truly are.  Figuring out our insecurities and downfalls to accept and change or just to own and be aware of. It is about finding what you love about yourself so you can be a positive footprint in this world for you and others. By no means have I mastered this yet, but I guess that’s why we get a lifetime to try figure ourselves out. 🙂 Be brave, be you, and take a look at the video – you just might like it.”

Blood To Bone follows 2013’s Gravel & Wine, which spawned hit singles including “Man Like That”, synced to a Skyfall-themed Heineken advertisement, in which Gin appeared alongside Daniel Craig’s James Bond and Wigmore’s 2009 debut album Holy Smoke. Both albums reached #1 and multi-platinum status back home in New Zealand.  Revered for her spellbinding and strikingly raw live performance, be sure to catch Gin Wigmore in a city near you!
