Guitar Center Takes “Legends Collection” on Tour

Guitar Center will take its iconic “Legends Collection” on the road beginning May 23 for a 4-city tour that will make weekend stops in Fountain Valley, La Mesa, San Francisco and Hollywood. The “Legends Collection” will feature three of rock’s most famous guitars – Eric Clapton’s “Blackie®” Fender® Stratocaster® and Gibson ES-335, as well as Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny” Fender® Stratocaster®. Purchased for over $2.4 million from the Clapton Crossroads Centre charity auction at Christies New York in 2004, these three guitars are among the most treasured guitars in rock history.

Assembled in 1973 by Eric Clapton himself from the parts of several guitars, Clapton played “Blackie®” almost exclusively on stage and in the studio from 1973-1985, recording hits such as “Cocaine,” “I Shot The Sherriff,” “Wonderful Tonight,” “Further On Up The Road,” “Lay Down Sally” and various live versions of “Layla” as well as being featured on several album covers and videos. His Cherry Red Gibson “ES-335” was used to record Cream’s versions of “Badge” and “Crossroads” as well as many other historical performances during the 40 years he owned it. Steve Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny,” which Guitar Center purchased for $623,500, was used to record his classic love songs including “Lenny” and “Riviera Paradise.”

Home to the largest collection of vintage instruments in the nation, Guitar Center is also proud to showcase a hand-picked selection of its most rare and sought-after vintage guitars as part of its Vintage Road Show.  With Vintage locations in Hollywood, Nashville and Manhattan, Guitar Center’s vintage collection includes hundreds of the rarest and most valuable guitars, amplifiers and other instruments, including an impressive assemblage of ’50s and ’60s Strats and Les Pauls, handcrafted archtops, Jazz Basses, P-Basses and more.

Guitar Center Sessions Presents: Kenny Wayne Shepherd

More news from Guitar Center: their “Guitar Center Sessions” series provides inspiration from iconic artists in the industry to aspiring musicians.

Sorry ladies, Kenny married Mel Gibson's daughter Hannah in 2006, and they had a child in 2007.
Sorry ladies, Kenny married Mel Gibson’s daughter Hannah in 2006, and they had a child in 2007.

This time, their speaker is four time Grammy nominated, blues rock musician, Kenny Wayne Shepherd. This free event is being held in Pasadena, CA at the local Guitar Center. It’s next Wednesday, the 18th, at 7:00 pm. Highlights from the session include secrets from Kenny on topics ranging from technique to songwriting. He’s also going to talk about his own new guitar design for Fender, called the Fender Signature Series Stratocaster.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd has received two Billboard Music Awards, two Orville H. Gibson awards, and the Blues Foundation’s Keeping The Blues Alive Award. At the age of 21, he opened for The Rolling Stones!  He has sold millions of albums with his most recent release being a DVD/CD project entitled 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads, which follows Kenny as he travels the country to jam with and interview the last of the authentic blues musicians.

Some of his best known songs include, “In 2 Deep”, “Last Goodbye”, and “True Lies”. But, as usual, you can go to his website for any more information.

And the winner is…

Last month I wrote about Guitar Center’s annual drum contest that was held in LA this year. Well, 22 year old Jerome Flood II defeated the rest and was crowned winner after competing with 5 other finalists.

What a feat, too, since the finalists were being judged by today’s drummer greats. The judges included past title holder Thomas Pridgen from Mars Volta, Danny Carey from Tool, Alan White from Yes, Taylor Hawkins and Drew Hester from Foo Fighters, Kenny Aronoff, The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold, Snoop Dogg’s drummer Trevor Lawrence Jr., Angels and Airwaves’ Atom Willard, and Street Drum Corps’ Frank Zummo.

The five rounds of competition took FOUR months, with Flood ultimately beating around 5,000 other contestants.

On January 14th, he also was able to make his TV debut on Last Call with Carson Daly. The Atlanta resident says, “The world is going to know about me thanks to this. I’m really thankful to Guitar Center for this opportunity, because it’s really changed my life.”

If you’d like to see the winning video of Jerome rocking the house, click here. If you want to see him on TV, click here.

Drum Roll…Please

guitar-center-logo

For the last 20 years, guitar giant Guitar World has hosted an annual drum contest. It’s the world’s largest drum competition. And this year they’re holding their 20th anniversary for Drum-Off.

The Grand Finals for Drum-Off ’08 is January 10th in Hollywood. There’s six finalists:

Juan Carlos Mendoza from E. Brunswick, NJ

Jerome Flood II from Lawrenceville, GA

Anthony Burns from Saginaw, MI

Ramon Sampson from Memphis, TN

Sherman Arnold from Englewoodm CO

Timm Newton from La Mesa, CA

After numerous competitions thoughout the entire country (held at every single of the the 214 stores in America), six undiscovered drummers were chosen. A huge feat to accomplish, going through almost 5,000 contestants, these six musicians relish in nervous excitement. The six finalists will go head to head on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 at Guitar Center’s Drum-Off Grand finals in Los Angeles for a prize package worth over $45,000. They will be performing at the historic Music Box at Fonda Theater in front of a capacity crowd. The show will also feature performances from drumming greats Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden, Jason Bittner from Shadows Fall, an exclusive collaboration by Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta) and Thomas Lang. Lastly (but not least!), a headlining performance by Papa Roach. The evening’s hosted by Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction.

If you just happen to be in that area, definitely check it out. Let me know if ya do! This competition is huge; Guitar Center’s annual Drum-Off has been recognized by the music community as one of the most important platforms for unsigned talent, and an awesome start-off point for many seriously talented young drummers. Tickets can be bought here from TicketWeb. It’s $15 a ticket, and all-ages…so don’t let your “sobriety”, “underage-ness”, “lack of sobriety”, “ummm…whatever” stop you!
