New Band (and free downloads!): Electra

Electra is proud to release the new video for their frenetic ska-rock ’n’ roll stomp “Coming to Get You!” The dark, left-field video catches one of the band’s performances as a series of freaks, geeks, and psychos sabotage the video.

Electra is currently signed to Anova Music – Tel Aviv’s leading record company – and their first two singles “Coming to Get You” and “Dawn of Summer” were instant radio hits. Their songs combine gritty, catchy melodies and garage rock swagger. They channel influences from Rockabilly grooves and ’60s soul to ’80s The Cars type music in the vane of The Clash and Buzzcocks. They’re quickly becoming one of the most provocative acts in the country and around the world.

The band’s also done a cover of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” that I’m in love with.

New Download: Luke Rathborne

On the heels of an extremely successful trip to the UK which landed Luke Rathborne love from NME and the BBC, Luke returns to the US just in time for the release of his debut album, the split EP I Can Be One E.P. / Dog  Years E.P., which is out now via Dilettante Recordings.

People have been asking –  why the split EP?  Rather than  muddling his music’s disparate take on the world around  him, attempting to intertwine songs written under  different circumstances and in different frames of mind,  Rathborne decided to offer audiences his ideal window  into his headscape – two EPs, each unique in their own right, as one  album.

Dog Years EP (stream in its entirety on Soundcloud) embraces Rathborne’s more pop aesthetic – not shiny, happy pop, but effervescent, melancholic pop.  The title track offers a cynical poke to not letting the “dog years” pass you by.  The material from the I Can Be One EP was penned following Rathborne’s move to New York City after high school and completed with members of Antony and the Johnsons contributing to the arrangements.   The material on this EP takes on a somber, darker hue.

But while the tones change, the inspiration is largely the same. “All of the songs – on both EPs – are about being afraid of connecting, because connections open up the possibility of being harmed…It’s interesting that they intersect here, because I’d been playing with the idea of putting them together and seeing how they mix, but this seems a lot more pure – this is my music, this is what I want to say, and this is how I want to say it,” Luke explains.

NEW album: elbow

Following the immense success of elbow’s double platinum selling The Seldom Seen Kid, Manchester’s finest five-piece are pleased to announce the release of their fifth studio album, Buld a Rocket Boys! which will be released in the United States on April 12th. A digital version of the album is available now to coincide with the March 7th UK release.  

“Lyrically this is a record about the ups and downs of being young through the eyes of someone who loved and hated it all at the same time. Ultimately though, when we listen back to this record in years to come it will remind us of how it felt to be the same old friends, in the same wonderful studio, in the same old town making another record we’re immensely proud of but this time in the warm glow of having realized all the plans we made as boys. The album title recommends that everybody have a go.”

Says Guy Garvey, the bands lead-man and vocalist when asked about the inspiration and efforts that went into making Build a Rocket Boys! Going on to become one of the UK’s most loved and influential bands, The Seldom Seen Kid went on to the receive the Mercury Music Album Of The Year for 2008, whilst “One Day Like This” (the official soundtrack to England’s World Cup and Olympics) and “Grounds For Divorce” both deservedly collected Ivor Novello Awards, they were also named Best British Band at the 2009 BRITS, picked up a South Bank Show award and were heralded for their ‘Outstanding Contribution to British Music’ at the 2009 NME Awards.

New Video: YELLE “Safari Disco Club”/”Que Veux-Tu”

Yelle has not one, but two, new eye-popping videos, which together form a miniature film for their forthcoming album Safari Disco Club (March 29th; V2/Cooperative Music USA/Downtown Records).  In the first half, which is the video for the album’s title track, the trio hit the dance floor to create a real-life safari disco club.  The second half, which is the clip for “Que Veux-Tu,” finds Grand Marnier hopping behind a drum kit, Tepr manning the keys, and frontwoman Julie Budet slipping into a sparkly red dress to keep the party going. In both clips Yelle are joined by dance crew Fanny Pak, who were featured on the MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, and the whole thing was directed by Jeremie Sandon. Like all things Yelle, the videos are a place where late night fun, fashion, and a sly sense of humor all come together.   It’s also a tantalizing taste of how fun the band’s live show is. You can catch Yelle on an extensive North American tour this Spring.
 
Yelle is fronted and named by Yelle, nee Julie Budet, a sparky gamine with a deceptively demure schoolgirl voice. Joined by producers Grand Marnier (Jean-Francois Perrier) and Tepr (Tanguy Destable). Since the release of their acclaimed debut album, Pop-Up, the band have kept busy. They covered Robyn’s “Who’s That Girl” as part of the iTunes international exchange, and she covered their track “A Cause Des Garçons” in return. They were also were asked by Katy Perry to remix her hit single “Hot n Cold” which has led to them supporting her UK tour in April.

Check ‘Em Out: My M.O.

In 2011, My M.O. gears up for their second EP Bonfire.

The Brooklyn-based indie-electro band My M.O. unleash their latest video “Bonfire Man,” where they blow off their dead end jobs in the city, high-jack their bosses car and head to Woodstock to reconnect with the forces of nature.

Hailing from all points on the globe (Texas, Australia, Jamaica), My M.O. represents New York City’s convergence of cultures at its best. Erika Buestami aka Enki is a singer and rapper from Australia, who handles lead vocals and bass. Katy Walker is a veteran DJ, originally from Texas, who plays keys, contributes vocals and produces their songs. Dion Mac is a Jamaican-born rocker, who shreds guitar and adds to the medley of vocals. 
Together, they subtly cull their broad range of influences into a tasty indie-pop blend of ethereal beats and saucy lyrics.
 
My M.O. formed in 2008 after the three frontwomen met through mutual friends while residing in Brooklyn. They started regularly playing live shows on the NYC circuit and released their 6-track debut, Monkey Remix EP via Unemployable Music in August 2010. Their music video for first single “Monkey” created a viral buzz in the blogsphere, garnering a growing fanbase and praise from critics.
