Newest Love: Private Island

“For a sound so contagious, I’d bet they’re impressive to see live.”
– What Youth

“So grab your sunglasses and sunscreen and hit the pool with this one on your loudspeakers.” — Earmilk

“L.A.-based Private Island has one foot in the retro-ism of smooth jazz and funk and the other in the gang’s-all-here musical collectivism of modern indie-pop.”
– Buzzbands.LA

After dominating the West Coast music scene and selling out headlining shows in LA, Private Island is heading on their first US Tour with Future Generations, prepared to bring their mix of funky California indie pop-rock to a venue near you. After making a splash on the internet with their Hype Machine approved hit “Drugs,” and over 3 million streams on Spotify, Private Island is excited to promote their third studio project, Night Drivewhich will mark a slight departure from their indie-rock past to a smoother R&B vibe.

The lead single, “Turbulence,” is Private Island’s first step into a world that breaks away from the shimmering indie-rock of their past releases. While maintaining their roots, the new music opens the door into a darker, more polished sound, where lead singer Christian Lum effortlessly denounces his loss of faith in love. The sonic development of the new single mixed with their signature bluesy-rock sound leaves listeners with a taste of the new album, due out fall 2017. The Southern California six-piece band, comprised of Christian Lum, Tommy Nickerson, Cameron Anderson, Michelle Guerrero, Tim Barbour and Roger Mawer, worked with producer Jacob Munk and mastering engineer Joe Lambert for Night Drive.

Check ‘Em Out: Navy Gangs

ng

Navy Gangs is a pop quintet currently residing in the washed out and overly demanding area of New York City.  Singer/Guitarist Matthew Tillwick, Guitarist Noah Kohll, and Drummer Gavin Cordaro began orchestrating music together in 2012 at Central High School in the red light district of Omaha where they failed their junior years miserably.

For 2 months they took jobs working in the desert dome at the Henry Doorly zoo until they saved enough of their dismal wages for one way bus passes to New York City, where they moved in temporarily with Kohll’s grandmother Estelle.

After making some new friends in Washington Square park, the 3 boys found themselves in a basement scene in little Italy. It was there that they met their bassist, Wilson Keithline from Providence, Rhode Island. Together they became Navy Gangs, a troupe who’s songs grab influence from dark rooms, hopeless romanticism, table wine, and back page humor.

The EP was recorded in Noah Kohll’s grandmother Estelle’s home by Joey Kimono straight to 2 inch tape and was mixed and mastered by Steve Marion of Delicate Steve.  It features vocals and percussion from long-time friend Coley Gold, a nomadic vixen who plays shows with the band often but never rings ahead of time (just shows up).

Derived from heartbreak, endless internet streaming, and the pain that is being social, Navy Gangs debut EP is a pop miracle. Joining the ranks of huge acts like Lady Gaga, Beck and Green Day, they’ve been named one of Newsweek’s “10 October Albums To Look Forward To.”

Must Listen: Coast Modern – “The Way It Was”

unnamed (2)

“Coast Modern debuted with “Hollow Life” and followed it up with “Animals” both jaunty, summery songs with lyrics that go deeper than you might think on first listen. (Check out my post from back in May.)

The Los Angeles duo’s new single is “The Way It Was,” and this time they introduce a surprising electronic element towards the end alongside their usual pop/rock blend.

“With so many songs about ‘better times,’ we thought there’d be no better time to write a song about the wetter times—the lush rainforest of the present. In such a turbulent era, it’s easy to get stuck in the quicksand of nostalgia or tangled in vines of worry. Come on this jungle cruise with us as we explore the wonders of now…because we all know it’s never gonna go back to the way it was.”

Check ‘Em Out: The Well Reds

the well reds

Here’s an intro to pop rock quartet The Well Reds. These guys have been named “the epitome of pure musical bliss” by The Daily Unsigned and are preparing to release Volume in November 2014. The Atlanta, GA natives just premiered the newest track from the album, “Do You Still Love Me,” an infectiously catchy track reminiscent of Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and Maroon 5.

The tune debuted on Indie Shuffle, who called it “a whip-my-hair-back-and-forth singalong track that’ll make every cell in your body wanna do the shimmie.”

New Album (today): Digitalism – I Love You, Dude

Click to stream the new album at AOL Spinner

I Love You, Dude, the sophomore album from Digitalism is out today in the US digitally and will be released physically on July 5th.  The album features 10 tracks, each of which has their own vibrant identity. This is the sound of a band welding dancefloor pugilism onto crafted sonic sculpture. They set the bar high for themselves, and deliver with an amazing album featuring tracks like  “Forrest Gump,” co-written with Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, “Circles,” with its Who-ish keyboard and apparently existential lyrics, and standout pop single “2 Hearts.”

Favorite Song: Graffiti6 “Stare Into the Sun”

UK producer TommyD and singer/songwriter Jamie Scott started collaborating in 2008 on material that would become Graffiti6. Jamie Scott is not hard to look at either…at all. Wow. Kinda sorta looks like Nick Lachey, but waaaaaaaay hotter and waaaaaaaay cooler…yes, I know that’s a contradiction, but you get it.
