New Music: The Living Sisters – “Can You Get To That?”

L.A.-based indie supergroup The Living Sisters —Inara George (The Bird and the Bee), Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond), Eleni Mandell and newest ‘sister’ Alex Lilly — have followed up their critically adored 2010 album Love to Live with the standards collection Run for Cover. The six song EP, with its intricate retro harmonies and righteously old-school instrumentation from the likes of drummer Don Heffington (Lone Justice, The Jayhawks) and pedal steel master Greg Leisz, provides listeners with some perspective as to the various sources of The Living Sisters’ zesty musical recipe, which “weave[s] together ’40s pop vocalizing, ’50s doo-wop, jazz, folk and country elements in a seamless mélange,” according to the L.A. Times’ Randy Lewis.

The six selections on Run for Cover range from a sublime a cappella take on Dolly Parton’s folk classic “Jolene” to a wildly imaginative reinterpretation of Funkadelic’s “Can You Get To That?” The harmony-laden EP, which also contains covers of songs associated with Jo Stafford “Make Love to Me” and Doris Day “Que Sera, Sera,” features two songs made famous by Patsy Cline “A Poor Man’s Roses (Or a Rich Man’s Gold)” and “Sweet Dreams.” In 2011, The Living Sisters hosted ‘A Tribute to Patsy Cline’ at Los Angeles’ Disney Hall as part of the L.A. Philharmonic Songbook Series.

Run for Cover is the latest in a string of accomplishments for these all-stars, who have been collaborating off and on since 2006 while conducting their respective individual careers. Mandell’s sultry voice and inventive songs have made her a modern-day L.A. treasure, and she has once again captivated the critics with her latest LP, 2012’s I Can See the Future. Stark’s mix of pop and chamber music in Lavender Diamond has been described as “effortless [and] timeless-sounding.” As The Bird and The Bee, George and her partner Greg Kurstin have built a cult following with their heady fusion of jazz, pop and tropicalia. And singer/multi-instrumentalist Alex Lilly’s band Touché has been cited as “scintillating pop music that tickles and rolls all over the flesh with a blend of beats and guitar and keys that feels fresh and new.”

Run for Cover will be available on January 8th, 2013.

Video: Skye – “Featherlight”

Trip-hop’s undisputed Queen and Morcheeba frontwoman Skye returns this Autumn with her third solo record, Back To Now, released through [PIAS] America on October 30th. Production credits for the album, which is accompanied by lead single “Featherlight”, come from the Grammy Award winner Stephen Fitzmaurice (Paloma Faith, Metronomy and Professor Green).

Back To Now sees Skye on assured form in the follow up to 2009’s Keeping Secrets. The album began life in similar fashion to her two previous releases, in partnership with her longtime collaborator and husband Steve Gordon. However, in contrast to Keeping Secrets and Skye’s solo debut Mind How You Go, guitar and piano were laid to one side and tracks instead evolved from the early barebones of beats and loops. Aware of the potential of the raw material she had written, Skye specifically sought out the production services of Fitzmaurice; “I’d worked with Stephen before when he mixed (previous single) “Love Show” and knew he’d be able to take these new songs to the next level”.

Fitzmaurice’s crisp production values couple with Skye’s ethereal voice to impressive effect, across a distinctly nocturnal soundscape. Synths bubble across early album highlights “Sign of Life” and lead single, “Featherlight”, both anchored by Skye’s effortless vocals, whilst “Every Little Lie’s” chorus mines a compulsive vocal hook to memorable effect.

Tracklisting:

  1. Troubled Heart
  2. Sign of Life
  3. Featherlight
  4. Nowhere
  5. Little Bit Lost
  6. We Fall Down
  7. Every Little Lie
  8. High Life
  9. Dissolve
  10. Bright Light

Videos: Wild Belle

Wild Belle joins the Passion Pit tour on the heels of a handful of dates opening for Tennis and a brief stint in NYC that saw the band playing a headline set at Brooklyn’s Zebulon and a performance for the launch of Alexa Chung’s collaboration with Maje.

“Backslider” is another cut from the band’s forthcoming 2013 release Isles. The video, shot and directed by the siblings’ youngest brother Bennet, is an evocative tale of a man who keeps on slipping back into old habits and revisiting old flames. Using projected 35mm film slides from their mother’s travels through Australia, Asia and the American west; it’s these myriad of cultural influences from the siblings’ upbringing that’s reflected in Wild Belle’s music and visuals.

Wild Belle’s live performances have already been recognized for their catchy hooks and breezy sound. The duo, who hails from Chicago, has quickly become one of the most promising acts of 2012! The band received glowing reviews with performances from earlier this year at SXSW, as well as, a sold-out headlining show in London, and support gigs with The Temper Trap, !!!, and The Maccabees.  The band also performed at Hideout Block Party in their hometown of Chicago this last month where the band caught up with the Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot to talk about the birth of Wild Belle.
