The Chicago quintet Scattered Trees’ Daytrotter Session show their skilled, multi-layered heartfelt songs HERE. The band premiered their latest video for “Sympathy” with MTV Hive. Directed by Scattered Trees’ guitarist/keyboardist J.M. Harper, “Sympathy” is a stark, poignant exploration of love, loss, and redemption — themes the band touches upon in their recently released full-length record. Praising the video, MTV Hive’s Jason Newman wrote, “The clip is a mini-movie that looks like a deleted scene from Werner Herzog’s soldier-gone-mad epic “Aguirre: The Wrath of God” … it feels more like an artsy, methodical short film than the budget-conscious, lo-fi approach employed by many indie bands.” Watch the video HERE.

Newest Love + Free Download: Sparkadia – “Mary”

Sparkadia is essentially Alex Burnett who plays with his supporting and touring band. The latest album, The Great Impression, is a great listen, and “Mary” is a great introduction to the record as a whole. “Mary” is a perfect example of Sparkadia’s musical astheic and take on twisted emotions of a story-telling soul. New Music: Phenomenal Handclap Band – “Following”

On the heels of their US tour opening for the legendary Bryan Ferry, The Phenomenal Handclap Band have released “Following” – the first single off their forthcoming new album, Form & Control, out January 31^st via Tummy Touch Records. The track finds the group taking the next step forward from the cosmic disco-funk and international, psychedelic soul of their critically acclaimed debut album.

The band will also be making their triumphant return to their hometown of New York on November 23rd to headline a show at Hiro Ballroom for Tummy Touch Records’ 15^th year anniversary. They will perform along with Horse Meat Disco and Bing Ji Ling, and the night will include DJ sets by Tummy Touch founder Tim “Love” Lee and other special guests.

“Following” was written in NYC while dancing at David Mancuso‘s legendary Loft Party and inspired by the sounds of Human League, Chic and Fern Kinney. Sean Marquand, writer and co-producer of the song, recalls: “At a truly great dance party, there is a moment when you can feel a certain energy take off in the room. You can look around and see that everyone is in to the exact same thing at the exact same moment, it’s a unifying force. The song is directed toward all of those who might want to join that moment and experience the same spirit.”

Let’s Try Scuba Diving

As he gets ready to put on an unforgettable performance of his album Lillian at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge on October 25^th, Ben Lear is sharing a free mp3 of one of its tracks, “Scuba Lessons.”

Lillian is a compelling tale of love, loss, and an underwater adventure with sea creatures and an island made of floating trash. An activist who has performed at events for the United Nations and TEDx, Lear was inspired to make Lillian a parable about pollution in our oceans after learning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – a giant gyre of plastic bottles, tires, and other debris floating in the ocean between California and Japan. Activism runs in the Lear family, as Ben is the son of activist and TV legend, writer/producer Norman Lear (All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son).

The October 25^th performance of Lillian will bring Lear’s vivid story to life with an ambitious staging that includes plastic bottle light sculptures (designed and built by Ben himself), costumes, a 15-piece band and orchestra, gospel choir, and projected animation.

Lillian is the story of a young man kept awake by the fear that he’s watching his lover, who sleeps soundly in bed, drift away from him, becoming one of the many things he’s lost in his life. He determines that all the things we lose in our lives end up in an island of trash floating in the Pacific Ocean. And, in a desperate attempt to reclaim these things, he sets off on a scuba-diving journey to that island.

Lear elaborates, “During ‘Scuba Lessons,’ the diver remembers when he and Lillian learned to dive on a family trip to Hawaii. It’s a bit of an aha moment when he realizes that’s how he’ll rescue her from sea, by diving to the Garbage Patch.”

New Music: Gigamesh

Gigamesh’s debut self-titled EP is available through all digital retailers starting today, through Our Label International. Additionally, fans can buy the extended version of the single “When You’re Dancing Ft. Induce” exclusively on Beatport. Gigamesh has received considerable attention and support from DJs as diverse as DJ AM and Brodinski to Busy P and Fare Soldi for his bootleg remixes of artists like Animal Collecitve, Lykke Li and Radiohead, the latter two of which hit #1 on the Hype Machine. In celebration of the EP release, he has released the new “It’s So Intense” (Fare Soldi Enrico Pallazzo Remix) MP3.

Gigamesh opens the EP with disco-infused single “When You’re Dancing (feat. Induce)” with a hook that commands you to move. “It’s So Intense” lives up to its name as a hazy synth-driven club banger. EP closer “People” shows the melodic side of Gigamesh, lead by melodic vocals from Nicole Godiva while still incorporating bass guitar and synths.

Known for pushing the boundaries of dance music, Gigamesh has been making his mark for several years in dance clubs around the world. He has garnered widespread success with his own popular blend of remixes, as well as his work with remix group DiscoTech, and his role in Señor Stereo, a disco influenced live-electronic group. Gigamesh was hired to remix Mike Posner’s “Cooler Than Me” in late 2009. Ultimately chosen to be the first single on Posner’s debut album, the Gigamesh version went on to sell over 2.5 million copies.

New Album: Juan Maclean – “Everybody Get Close”

Since the release of 2009’s The Future Will Come, John “Juan” Maclean has stayed quite busy remixing artists like Chairlift, Matthew Dear, The Tough Alliance and forthcoming remixes for Yoko Ono and Stevie Nicks. He’s also appeared on both the Holy Ghost! Static on the Wire! EP (shredding guitar solo!) and took front man duties on Shit Robot’s “Grim Receiver”. Juan Maclean is now gearing up for the October 25^th release of Everybody Get Close on DFA Records. The digital only album features previously released outtakes and re-mastered tracks as well as remixes from some of his most talented colleagues. Interspersed among the eleven songs are five that originally appeared on Find A Way, an EP only previously available at Juan Maclean live shows. “Find A Way” opens the record with call-and-response vocals from Maclean and bandmate Nancy Whang atop an electronic pop base, followed by “Let’s Talk About Me,” which bounds blissfully throughout. “Deviant Device” is laden with dubby percussion and echo-drenched synths reminiscent of Basic Channel. “X2” offers up wide hall of house and robotized vocals. Short and sweet track “The Robot” is filled with mechanical sounds and extraterrestrial noises. “Feel So Good,” from the DJ-Kicks compilation also features vocals from Whang and is built on a rolling loop and an indefatigable beat provided by late drummer Jerry Fuchs. Japanese bonus track “When I Am With You” leisurely moves along on a relaxing romantic groove. Album closer and title track “Everybody Get Close” has mechanical vocals and funky synth bleats that show faint traces of major influences like Zapp and S.O.S. band, respectively.

Juan Maclean and Nancy Whang have begun work on The Juan Maclean’s 3rd LP for DFA Records. In the meantime the digital compilation Everybody Get Close, serves as a handy compilation and welcome reminder of the music Juan Maclean has contributed to both the dance and indie community. It also can only hint at what might come next from the chameleon-like Juan Maclean.

Free Download: Misfits – “Twilight of the Dead”

Punk rock legends the Misfits have released The Devil’s Rain, the band’s first album in nearly a decade! It was produced by Ed Stasium, who’s credits include the Ramones’ Road to Ruin and Too Tough to Die, as well as the Misfits’ 1999 release Famous Monsters. Celebrating the occasion, they’ve release a free mp3 for one of the album’s tracks, “Twilight of the Dead.”

The Devil’s Rain packaging is designed to emulate a CD sized gatefold LP, featuring some incredible new Misfits portraits shot by the iconic Mick Rock. It also showcases a jaw-dropping, two-panel front/back cover painting featuring the rebirth of the band’s iconic “Fiend” mascot in an epic setting rendered by Arthur Suydam (known for his immensely popular work on the Marvel Zombies series, among others).

The band’s current lineup – consisting of founding member Jerry Only on vocals/bass, Black Flag alum Dez Cadena, and drummer Eric “Chupacabra” Arce – just kicked off an extensive US tour. For both fans of their classics and newcomers discovering the band for the very first time, The Devil’s Rain embodies the ferocity and melody that have made the Misfits omnipresent and immortal. One thing is certain, The Misfits are here to stay and every day is Halloween.
