New Video: Macy Gray’s Celebrating the World Cup

Macy Gray has just released a new soccer-themed video for “Beauty in the World” to celebrate the World Cup. The video, directed by Giuliano Bekor, features models hitting the turf in the Los Angeles Coliseum, where they exhibit some pretty fancy footwork, all in high heels and tight skirts. At first, it’s really cheesy…but it gets somewhat better. Besides, I’m sure it’ll be a hit with all the male football fans.

Macy Gray’s new album The Sell Out will be out next week, and she’ll be on making some TV appearances:

June 22  – “Good Morning America”
June 23 – “The View”
June 23 – “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”

R. Kelly’s World Cup Anthem

Despite his fear of flying, R. Kelly boarded a plane to South Africa to perform at the 2010 FIFA World Cup kick-off ceremonies. The Pied Piper has penned “Sign of a Victory,” an inspirational song that’s been declared the official anthem for the World Cup, featuring Africa’s Soweto Spiritual Singers.

Newest Love AND Highly Anticipated: The Drums

First of all, by going to their site you’re immediately hit with a video and if you type in your email address you can get a free mp3 of “It Will All End In Tears” sent to your inbox.

Awwwwweeeeesssssssooooooooommmmmeeeeeee.

The Drums self-titled debut album was released digitally two days ago from Downtown Records. The vinyl will follow on August 10 and the physical CD will hit stores in September. The US version of the CD will contain bonus tracks not found on the UK release.   After the release of their debut EP Summertime! and a string of tour dates in the UK, The Drums were listed at #1 on both Clash and NME’s Top Tips of the Year and #5 on the BBC’s Sound of 2010 poll. Pitchfork’s readers voted the band as ‘Best Hope for 2010’ in their 2009 Readers’ Poll.
You’ve heard the buzz and with the release of the band’s debut album, the songs speak for themselves.

Straight From the Source: Free Energy’s “Bang Pop” Video

I touched on the subject of Free Energy and their video a couple times. I had also posted a blast informing you guys that the audition was at Urban Outfitters in Philly. Well, Pitchfork conducted an interview with the director of the video for “Bang Pop,” Josh Nussbaum.

Here’s a short excerpt, but click here for the entire article (and to watch the video).

Pitchfork: This is obviously a super fun video. Was it fun to make? Or was it hard to wrangle all those people to look like they were having fun?

JN: I kept promising myself that I was going to have fun making the video. This was the mantra that I would repeat every morning. By nighttime, I needed to remind myself that I should be having fun with it. It was a huge challenge. The casting was left until two or three days before the shoot. At a certain point, I just had to put the casting into God’s hands. We shot on the week of the ash cloud, so I lost a couple key members of my crew, and I ended up taking a lot of that responsibility on myself. The creative process of making the video was incredibly fun, but my personal expectations that are so high that I’m constantly having to remind myself to have a good time.

Pitchfork: Why are there so many bubbles in the video?

JN: The bubbles were a momentary inspiration in my first meeting with the production designer. I was just trying to intimidate him by creating an impossible list of requests. I probably said, “Oh, and of course there’s gotta be bubbles the whole time”. So I was very pleased when I showed up and there were bubbles the whole time.

Pitchfork: In the hallway scene, Evan Wells, the band’s bass player, is doing all these wheelchair tricks. How many times did he fall down?

JN: Evan is just really good. In fact, he didn’t fall once. Half of my directions in that scene were to him because he was at the front of the scene. I really wanted him to fall; I thought that would be great for the video. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. He did give it his all, he just didn’t fall. The wheelchair was supposed to have fireworks shooting off it, but there were a lot of small to large pyrotechnics– as well as all sorts of nudity and drug references– that were at some point slated for the script, but fell by the wayside.

Newest Love: The Amplifetes

The Amplifetes are a brand new 4-piece band from Sweden. Being accomplished songwriters and producers on their own, the members have worked with names such as Kelis, Madonna, Grandmaster Flash and Peter Bjorn and John. While having occasionally crossed paths during the course of their careers, they have existed as a unit for about a year. The band think of themselves as a dreamteam collaboration of their influences – listing 60s Psychadelia, The Electric Light Orchestra, The Ramones, Elvis Costello, David Bowie and Chicago Trax Records House releases.

The highly addictive result can be heard in The Amplifetes debut single “It´s My Life“, a spitting image of urban life and a happy three-part marriage between garage pop, electro and punk. It was featured recently in a promo campaign for Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli, starring a lightly dressed Milla Jovovich, creating quite a stir over Europe.
Watch the video for their second single, “Whizz Kid”  HERE and fall in love like I have!
