Stream: Caught a Ghost – Nightworks

caught-a-ghost-nightworks

Now, Nightworks, the debut EP from Caught A Ghost, is released today via +1 Records. As the songwriter, producer and lead singer of the band, Jesse Nolan is a devotee of music from bygone eras. With Caught a Ghost, he’s created a sound that eagerly expounds upon his affection for vintage soul, delta blues, and 90s rap alike.

The band has been producing and releasing content on music blogs and their social networks over the past few months. “Time Go” was premiered by Paste Magazine. “Hold Out” was featured here on Musically Amusing as well as on Rolling Stone, and the video premiered on NYLON. This week, the EP is being streamed on AOL Spinner.

As the band now releases their debut EP, they’ve already garnered over 500,000 YOUTUBE views.

The momentum has started to perk up people’s ears around the industry. “Time Go” was featured on the NBC’s SUITS, and “Connected” was featured on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.

Jessie Nolan describes the name of his band Caught A Ghost as referring to the sensation of being filled with the spirit of the past. “It’s an old expression” he says, “musicians used to say you caught a ghost if you gave a good performance. Like you were possessed.” It is this sort reverence for the music of bygone eras combined with Nolan’s musical dexterity that makes Caught A Ghost so unique, and on the cusp of something great.

Nightworks is the precursor to their debut album, due out Summer 2013 on +1 Records.

New Video: Walk Off The Earth – “Red Hands”

Walk Off The Earth have released a new video for their original song “Red Hands.” The group are already known for their innovative, unique homemade videos, and this one is no different. NPR’s Bob Boilen calls the video “high-concept but homemade, a little like the work of director Michel Gondry or the videos made by OK Go.  It’s a bit of a visual puzzle.”

The video, directed by Ellis Bahl, was shot in a single take in a warehouse in LA, and required the band to perform the song out of order and at different speeds to achieve the effect of jumping through time. Bahl explains, “We shot it on a steady-cam and walked backwards down the whole hallway with the band walking forwards performing the out of order song towards the camera. We only had enough supplies/daylight for ten takes and finally got it on the last one. It was really scary, but the payoff was immense.”

“Red Hands” is one of four tracks on WOTE’s just-released R.E.V.O. EP. “When we originally wrote the song, we were thinking about taking responsibility for your actions and standing up on your own when things go wrong… rather than blaming other people around you. Sometimes you just have to accept the circumstances that are thrown your way without pointing the finger,” says Gianni Luminati. Rolling Stone says of the song “‘Red Hands’ explodes with xylophone, walls of drums and anthemic chants,” and the NY Daily News has also praised the EP’s “rustic folk-pop originals with pluck.”

Walk Off The Earth have been bringing their energetic live show around the world all year, including a well received set at this summer’s Lollapalooza and sold out headlining shows in cities from NYC and LA to Toronto, Tokyo, Singapore, London, and Paris. They’re wrapping up the East Coast leg of their US headlining tour, and will pick up with a West Coast leg later this month. In addition to traditional ticket sales, fans can also purchase a special bundle including the R.E.V.O. EP and a ticket to the show of their choice here: http://smarturl.it/wotetix. A full list of tour dates is below.

Walk Off The Earth features multi-instrumentalists Gianni Luminati, Marshall, and Sarah Blackwood on vocals, Taylor on keyboards, and Joel Cassady on drums. WOTE have an incredibly loyal fanbase, with over 780k subscribers to their YouTube channel and over 592k fans on Facebook. The band gained notoriety for their creative multi-million-viewed YouTube videos ranging from a cover of the Weeds theme “Little Boxes” to Adele’s “Someone Like You” to their wildly popular cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” with all five band members playing one guitar, which has been viewed over 138 million times and landed the group a performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Newest Love (+ free DL): Fixers

Fixers has announced plans for their first U.S. EP, Pop Meat/Your Corruptor, which will see a release on April 24th on Dolphin Love Records. The Oxford, UK-based psychedelic pop quintet is sharing the track “Another Lost Apache” as a free MP3 download to give everyone a taste of the EP. With an aesthetic that blooms from Beach Boys-era harmonies and surf samples, Fixers assert themselves as a band to watch, with endless hooks and a love for experimentation.

Pop Meat/Your Corruptor opener, “Another Lost Apache,” builds on an a cappella harmony and turns it into a fuzzed out adventure. The anthemic “Crystals” will have you singing along on the first listen as its slow rolling speeds up to ecstatic peaks.  The monumental sound of  “Passages/Love In Action/108″ underscores its question of where did the world go before coming back down amidst chants: “We are the sun / We are the moon / We’re coming down / We’re coming down.” “Pink Light” has a propelling rhythm that will take you from a sunny afternoon into a late hours dancing frenzy. On Pop Meat/Your Corruptor, Fixers are hinting at what’s to come.  They never sacrifice the big melodies or the experimentation and the result is a sun-drenched, fuzzed out, joyride that will make your 2012 better.

Pop Meat/Your Corruptor EP Tracklist:

  • 1. Another Lost Apache
  • 2. Crystals
  • 3. Pink Light

Teaser: Telephoned – “Ring Ring”

If you consider “pop” a dirty word, Telephoned are the filthiest act you’ll hear all year. Somehow, frontwoman Maggie Horn and producer / DJ Sammy Bananas still manage to turn even the guiltiest of radio pleasures into indie-approved party jams we can all be proud of. Ring Ring is their first EP of originals on Fool’s Gold, harnessing the good-time energy of the group’s cover-heavy mixtapes and live sets to fuel three brand new songs that gleefully hopscotch from new-wave inspired r&b (“Last Time”) to shuffling funky house (“The Vow”) and the title track’s roller rink disco vibes. There is a smoke machine. Get involved…
Telephoned will be celebrating the release tonight with a live performance at Hotel Chantelle in NYC, showing off the moves they honed opening Chromeo’s sold-out Business Casual tour, and the infectious stage presence Pitchfork called “the most fun thing we saw at SXSW.” Win Win (Vice) and Skinny Friedman will also be DJing the party.
