Listen: Chromeo ft. Toro y Moi

unnamed (2)
Almost a decade ago, the Canadian duo Chromeo introduced their unique blend of electrofunk to an exponentially growing global audience. White Women, Dave 1 and P-Thugg’s 4th studio album coming this spring on Atlantic, refines their signature 70’s and 80’s influenced quirky pop songs, masterfully crafted in the tradition of the finest R&B, disco and funk. Montreal’s reigning loverboys will be previewing their infectiously catchy new record, featuring previously released singles “Over Your Shoulder” and “Sexy Socialite”, on the road this spring, along with playing some Chromeo classics from Business CasualFancy Footwork and She’s In Control. The “Come Alive Tour” launches in Houston, TX in April and winds its way through the US and Canada, with a headlining finale US show at NYC’s Terminal 5 in May. Chromeo’s live show has become legendary in its own right and this tour will mark just the first stop in many exciting live announcements to come for the band in 2014!

For all the retro talk, Chromeo’s music is, more than ever, anchored in pop’s present. This is reflected in the band’s collaborative approach on White Women. They unexpectedly resurrected Death From Above 1979 as their backing band to perform “Sexy Socialite” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, they shot an epic album trailer with Parisian design firm Surface to Air to preview “Over Your Shoulder” and partnered with contemporary artists Snarkitecture, MILK Studios & Tumblr to create The White Room installation in New York. The newest edition (pun intended) in an ever growing and exciting list of collaborators is Toro y Moi, featured on their buoyant new single,”Come Alive”. “Toro is a new school funk disciple, like us” says the band. “Ever since we heard his music we wanted to unleash his inner Jermaine Stewart.” This is disco Chaz in a way you’ve never heard him before.

Wild Belle Tour Dates

WildBelle

Chicago based duo Wild Belle have announced an extensive fall headlining tour that will kick off September 5 in Madison, WI.  The band recently made their Lollapalooza debut before they headed to San Francisco to play Outside Lands.  After previously touring the states opening for Passion Pit and Toro y Moi, Wild Belle will travel across North America and back for over 25 headlining tour dates -making this their biggest headline tour to date (full list of dates below).  To catch a glimpse of Wild Belle’s life on the road, watch the band’s self-directed video POSTCARDS FROM THE ROAD Nº3.

Wild Belle’s live performances have been recognized for their catchy hooks and infectious sound.  The band took their effortlessly sunny set on the festival circuit this summer with performances at Coachella, Sasquatch, Firefly, Full Moon Festival, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands.  The musical talents of both siblings shine during the band’s live performances, with Rolling Stone noting how “Natalie (breezes) about the stage with relaxed bravado while Elliot (switches) effortlessly between keyboards and sax…creating an organic wall of sound.”

In June the band stopped by a Los Angeles bike shop to record a performance with KCRW of “Love Like This” for NPR’s Field Recordings.  Noted by the Chicago Tribune for their “breezy sounding pop music,” Wild Belle is currently featured in Glamour’s summer music issue and as Time Magazines “Band to Watch”.

Wild Belle is Natalie and Elliot Bergman. The band is joined live by Kellen Harrison (bass) as well as fellow NOMO members Erik Hall (guitar) and Quin Kirchner (drums).

2011 Afro-Punk Festival

The Afro-punk Festival is returning to Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park for the 7th Annual Afro-punk Festival on August 27-28. The 2011 festival has the most stellar line up yet with Cee-Lo Green, Santigold, Janelle Monae just to name a few and with more to be added! In addition, the NikeBattle For the Streets Skate and BMX Competition, the largest street skate and BMX competition in NYC will return this year with the nation’s top amateur skaters and BMX riders in a competition to be judged by top professionals in both sports including Nigel Sylvester.

There are some very exciting new additions to the festival this year! Over 20 of the NYC area’s hottest food trucks and vendors have been brought together for the Afro-Punk Bites and Beats Food Truck Festival, which will bring cuisine from around the world and the 5 boroughs to the festival. In addition, Chef Marcellus Coleman, Executive Chef of Alias Restaurant in NYC, will provide his eclectic contemporary American cuisine to the festival artists, athletes and VIP’s.

Afro-punk has invited Harley-Davidson and Brooklyn Black bike scene documentarians, Denim and Chrome, to collaborate on a custom bike show featuring dozens of exotic custom bikes created by black riders in the NYC area. The custom bike show will also serve as the backdrop for the Harley-Davidson/Denim and Chrome 2012 Calendar, photographed by Darius Vick, which will feature exquisite tattooed beauties each month for bike fans across the country. In addition, the festival has commissioned an artist to paint over 300 skateboards as part of one large mural aka The Skate Artwall. The boards will be contested to Afro-punk fans at the Festival and Afro-punk will follow the life of the boards over the next year whether on the wall, the street or the half-pipe.

Described by the New York Times as putting “rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music,” the Afro-punk Festival has become a Brooklyn intuition, the focal point for the burgeoning Afro-punk movement. Over the past seven years, the festival has presented new artists before they hit it big, such as Grammy-nominated Santigold, The Noisettes and Janelle Monae. Afro-punk mainstays like Saul Williams, The Dirtbombs, and Dallas Austin have also graced Afro-punk’s stages.
