Santigold: 10 Years Golder Tour

Santigold is embarking on a US tour to commemorate the recent 10thanniversary of her self-titled debut album. The 10 Years Golder Tour kicks off April 30th at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium. She will be performing her debut album in its entirety as well as songs from throughout her career including her latest mixtape-style album I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions (Downtown).

This past summer, Santigold released I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions (Downtown), a spontaneous mixtape-style project she recorded with Mixpak Records producer Dre Skull. Santigold and Dre Skull bonded over their shared passion for Reggae and Afro-Caribbean music. Dre Skull, known for working across dancehall, hip hop, and electronic music as a DJ, producer and founder of Mixpak Records became an instant creative comrade of Santi’s. They decided to explore their ideas for a mixtape, which ultimately grew into a 10 song recording session, which they came to call The Gold Fire Sessions. Over the course of two weeks, they recorded the bulk of the songs, playing with Reggae and Afro-Caribbean influences while pushing and pulling their pillars with Santi’s singular point of view. As the writing and recording gained steam, Santi unearthed a few gems (ideas she had started with producers Ricky Blaze and Diplo) from her unreleased vaults and she and Dre reworked them, threading together classic Santigold ideas with the spirit of this new work. The incisive social commentary, humor, and daredevil sound that have become hallmarks of her work take on exciting new forms on this project. Unlike other Santigold albums, which are recorded over long periods and heavily curated and edited by Santi, I Don’t Want is a loose and spontaneous project, a snapshot of the infectious energy of the sessions with Dre Skull.

In the decade since her classic debut, Santi has revealed herself to be the most eclectic artist of her generation with a broad influence. She has collaborated with Jay Z, Kanye West, The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O & Nick Zinner, Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Amadou & Mariam, Q Tip, MIA, Mark Ronson, Pharrell, Julian Casablancas, U-Roy, Lykke Li, Basement Jaxx, Matt & Kim, Major Lazer, Asap Rocky, Diplo, Lil Yachty, Devo, and The Lonely Island. Her songs have been sampled by Drake & Lil Wayne and Future among others. She’s written for Gza of Wu-Tang Clan, Lily Allen, and Christina Aguilera. Santi has been handpicked for tours by Bjork, Kanye West, Jay Z, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Beastie Boys. She’s a singular artist beloved by her peers across genres.

Newest Love: Beginners

Beginners

Los Angeles-based indie-pop band Beginners will release their brand new “white-hot scorcher” (Neon Gold) sophomore EP Pleaser on September 16th. A formidable follow-up to their 2014 self-titled debut which garnered over 4 million Spotify streams, numerous TV syncs, and tour dates with artists such as Walk The Moon and Tove Lo, Pleaser features catchy dance melodies with a rock ‘n roll vigor and clever lyrics ranging from feel good to biting. Today, their new single premiered for their underdog anthem “What We Are”.

The sun-soaked indie pop track is “about my childhood in Indiana,” front-woman Samantha Barbera told Interview. “When I was growing up, my mom struggled financially and we were forced to live off of food stamps. Despite being poor in an otherwise wealthy town, she always instilled an impenetrable sense of confidence in me. I still have vivid memories of riding my second-hand bike around my neighborhood, wearing a giant gold medallion from the 70s that I took from my mom’s jewelry box, feeling like I owned the streets. It’s an underdog anthem about being proud of who you are, regardless of what anyone tells you.”

Pleaser is an ode to the thin line between love and hate. Pulsing singles like “Gangsters or Lovers” and “What We Are” leave no choice but to move to the contagious beats and guitar riffs. The Black Keys meet Yeezus in the tongue-in-cheek revenge ballad “I F*cking Hate You” where Barbera’s bluesy vocal melody delivers sultry lyrics with a violent twist. Gritty dance track “Making Love to the Dead” reveals how passion can turn to pain in a soul-sucking industry designed to churn out marketable hits, while hypnotic closer “Melting Into One” evokes the intoxicating power of young love. At first listen, I also immediately heard notes similar to that of Santigold.

Beginners delivers dark garage rock with a shimmery electronic pop veneer influenced by years of cutting their teeth in the LA punk scene. The band’s sound and lyrics ride a line between glossy and gritty, creating hooks that are at once magnetically catchy and unsettlingly honest. Their single “Who Knows” off their first EP launched the band two years ago resulting in buzz from Rolling Stone, Perez Hilton, Huffington Post, and TV syncs on shows including New Girl and commercials for Ray Ban, Skullcandy, and Miller Lite.

Celeb Video Version of Santigold’s “Can’t Get Enough Of Myself”

santigold

Following the release of her third album 99¢ on Atlantic Records, Santigold has revealed the standalone version of her innovative video for “Can’t Get Enough Of Myself (feat. B.C.),” one that viewers can enjoy without webcam access. The video features Jay Z, Andy Samberg, Alexander Wang, Olivia Wilde, Pharrell Williams, Yung Jake, and Santi herself, and some of her fans popping up as she walks through New York City.

The original interactive version of the video (posted here) uses the camera of the viewer’s computer or mobile device to incorporate them into the video in real time. It was directed by Santigold and Sam Fleischner and conceptualized and digitally developed by Yung Jake and Vince Mckelvie, with mobile app development by Bryan Yee. It plays on pop culture’s fascination with viewing and manipulating one’s own image. The video should be viewed on the web using Chrome as the browser and is available for mobile handheld devices via the “SANTIGOLD” app available in both the Apple/Android app stores. Santigold and Tumblr IRL are hosting a special record release event at Jack’s 99¢ Store (110 W. 32ndSt.) in New York City this Friday, February 26th as part of Tumblr’s IRL ongoing series. The free event will feature a DJ set, art installation, and more surprises. Santigold’s Tumblr has been functioning as a visual extension of the album’s themes of hyper-consumption and narcissism with exclusive videos being added continually. The series of pop up windows in the site’s design echo the experience of navigating through advertisements when searching online. The event will bring the world of 99¢ and Santigold’s Tumblr to life! Follow IRLIRL.tumblr.com for entry details.

New Music From Santigold: “Banshee”

Santigold

Santigold has shared the exhilarating single “Banshee” from her forthcoming album 99¢, out on February 26th via Atlantic Records. The song deals with overcoming self-doubt,  silencing detractors, and finding the strength to take risks and fearlessly pursue your aspirations. The message is underscored by one of Santigold’s most impassioned vocals and an explosive rhythm. “Banshee” was produced by Patrik Berger and John Hill with additional production by Linus “Style of Eye” Eklow of Miike Snow. Listen to “Banshee” now.

In celebration of the release of 99¢, Santigold has announced an in-store performance and signing at Rough Trade NYC on Tuesday, March 1. Beginning on the morning of March 1 when the store opens, anyone who purchases a copy of the album will get a wristband for the performance.

Santigold recently announced a North American spring tour, the “We Buy Gold Tour”. Renown for her monumental live shows, Santigold is taking it all to the next level in the brand new stage production. Tickets available here: http://smarturl.it/SantiTour

“Banshee” follows the release of “Chasing Shadows” from 99¢. Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij produced the track which features backing vocals from the West Los Angeles Children’s Choir. The mesmerizing video directed by Elliott Lester, explores the conflicted reality of an artist’s life, touching on themes of ambition and isolation. Watch it now.

Following her last album, Master of My Make Believe, Santigold wanted to explore new corners of her sound and different ways to convey her vision and political commentary.  She worked with new collaborators Patrik Berger, Rostam Batmanglij, Hit-Boy, HazeBanga, Justin Raisen, Zeds Dead, ILOVEMAKONNEN, and Sam Dew and longtime cohorts John Hill, Dave Sitek, and Doc McKinney. The result is the bright and big sound of 99¢ that takes the genre-defying fearlessness Santigold has become known for to new places.

Listen: The Knocks – “Classic” (feat. Powers)

Listen: The Knocks – “Classic” (feat. Powers)

“…a straight up summer smash, the kind of dance track that hangs in an era-less vacuum; the kind of tune makes you feel like you’re in a movie montage, that begins in the hazy magic hour and splices together every amazing moment till dawn.” VICE’s Noisey
“…the pair lands a sound timeless enough to conjure, via those perky guitar licks, catchiness ranging from modern Daft Punk, to old-school Sugar Ray, to that Len song, ‘Steal My Sunshine.’”
SPIN

NYC’s The Knocks are a distinctly 21st century duo, declared by NME as one of the “20 hottest producers in music” & by The Guardian as “cred-pop’s answers to The Neptunes.” Now one of the most buzzed-about duos on the electronic circuit, the blog world darlings recently announced the release of their debut full-length album, Endisco – set to drop October 7th. Endisco will feature collaborations with a wide range of superstar talent, including St. Lucia, Wes Miles (Ra Ra Riot), Adeline Michele (Escort), X Ambassadors, Sneaky Sound System & more.

Endisco album single “Classic” ft. Powers is a funk-infused dance anthem punctuated with The Knocks’ signature party-starting guitar loops, infectious keys & sultry vocals- the consummate summer anthem.

Having spent the last three years jet-setting around the globe for DJ gig, sharing stages with Grouplove, M.I.A., Chromeo & others, the duo will be on the road once again this summer- taking their ecstatic live show to college towns across the country as well as stints at New York’s Full Moon & Montreal’s ÎleSoniq festivals.

The Knocks consists of B-Roc & J-Patt, who moved in together after dropping out of music school in NYC. J-Patt’s background in soul & funk, and B-Roc’s years spent immersed in trip-hop & hip-hop beats, has allowed them to quickly ascend the production ranks. Initially gaining recognition for their remixes for artists including HAIM, Santigold, Foster the People, Two Door Cinema Club, Ellie Goulding & more, they eventually found themselves experimenting with sounds of their own. The guys didn’t think much would come of a nearly five-minute track they’d been building, all tense beats & tingling synths: “it kind of started out as a joke,” stated B-Roc. “But people were liking that more than the stuff we produced for other people. It felt right.” The duo quickly discovered a newfound freedom in creating their own songs: “it’s better because it’s our own, and we can do whatever we want with it,” explained J-Patt.

New Video: Santigold – “The Keepers”

Today Santigold premiered the new video for her anthemic track “The Keepers” from her album Master of My Make-Believe (Downtown/Atlantic). In the video, Santigold is a member of the idyllic 1950s American family sitting down to dinner and smiling as the world falls apart around them and the present reality of the United States comes rushing in. The video was directed by Nabil and features cameos by GZA, Kick Kennedy, and Trevor Andrew. Santigold just wrapped up her Spring US tour in support of Master of My Make-Believe. She will be appearing at festivals internationally throughout the summer including Lollapalooza, Reading and Leeds. Armed with her hybrid anthems, misfit band, and unstoppable dancers, the SG1s, her singular live shows are always monumental.

Noisey.com is the music channel from the makers of VICE. So you know its going to be good. And fun. The shows are about anything and everything concerning music—the best live jams, geeky record stores clerks, smarmy critics, boob-flashing fans, destroyed hotel rooms, and roadies. Never underestimate the roadies. The Noisey Youtube channel made its debut in February with M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls,” and VICE-produced A$AP Rocky video, “Wassup.” Since then the channel has racked up loads of online content with everyone from David Lynch to Odd Future. On YouTube, Noisey offers music fans the most extensive slate of original online music programming to date, covering not only the artists that matter most, but the trends and opinions that make up today’s music culture.

Check ‘Em Out: SSCION

Hailing from Kansas City’s unexpected art-scene, SSION has reached the apex of synth-pop perfection with the album Bent, out August 7th on Dovecote. Led by the charismatically avant gender outlaw Cody Critcheloe, SSION creates music that is simultaneously dance inducing and cheekily crass and that irreverently pokes fun at contemporary culture. Tracks are meticulously crafted with reverbed synth, deep bass and vocals that verge on the addictive. Critcheloe’s creativity is not bounded by music making, as he has been commissioned to produce music videos for a multitude of heavyweights in the unconventional-pop world, including Peaches, Gossip, CSS and Santigold as well as promotional videos for the vibrant outsider designer and fellow Kansas City local, Peggy Noland.

Drawing from a multifaceted artistic background, SSION is a total multimedia experience playfully on the vanguard of culture, replete with high-concept visuals, performance, costuming and make-up. The enhanced hard copy re-release of Bent will include previously unreleased bonus tracks and remixes from MNDR, Grimes, Nightfeelings, Physical Therapy and more.

Bent features the lushly reverbed introverted single “My Love Grows In The Dark.” In the accompanying video, conceived and produced by Critcheloe, the front man portrays himself as the antithesized pop-star, journeying through a surreal house of androgynous dancers and confronted with issues of representation, indifference and intimacy. The track got a dreamy disco remix treatment by Nightfeelings (Nick Weiss of Teengirl Fantasy).

SSION not only nods to the most influential and iconic pop artists of the past, but also stands to carve out its own place in the future as a whole new breed of pop.

SSION will play select live dates across on the east and west coast, appearing with Gossip, JD Samson and Sharon Needles. He will also be performing  at this year’s San Francisco Pride.

Tracklisting:
1. Listen 2 The Grrrls
2. Blonde With U
3. Psy-chic
4. Luvvbazaar
5. Earthquake
6. Growin
7. Feelz Good (4-Evr)
8. My Love Grows In The Dark
9. Nothing Happens At Nite
10. Weird Yearz
