“Coast Modern debuted with “Hollow Life” and followed it up with “Animals” both jaunty, summery songs with lyrics that go deeper than you might think on first listen. (Check out my post from back in May.)
The Los Angeles duo’s new single is “The Way It Was,” and this time they introduce a surprising electronic element towards the end alongside their usual pop/rock blend.
“With so many songs about ‘better times,’ we thought there’d be no better time to write a song about the wetter times—the lush rainforest of the present. In such a turbulent era, it’s easy to get stuck in the quicksand of nostalgia or tangled in vines of worry. Come on this jungle cruise with us as we explore the wonders of now…because we all know it’s never gonna go back to the way it was.”

Crayon Soul is produced by Corbu and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT, The Flaming Lips). It follows two acclaimed EPs, We Are Sound and Everything You Imagine Is Real, which garnered praise from the likes of NYLON, Stereogum, The Guardian, NME and more, as well as capturing the attention of Jessie Ware, who personally requested the band to remix her song “You & I (Forever)”.

Civil Twilight, originally from South Africa, and now Nashville based, are living proof of what happens when you stop worrying about being the chosen one and make music built on both the roots that grew you and the love that keeps you thriving every day.
Civil Twilight’s songs embrace every corner of human emotion, balancing delicate, poetic lyrics with sweeping arrangements that touch all the senses: a phrase to make you think; a rolling drumbeat you can feel in your bones; a guitar vamp as illustrative as a picture; a shimmer of keys whose light can nearly be seen and heard.
The same goes for their most recent release – a gorgeous, goose-bump giving acoustic rendition of their album, Story of an Immigrant, which premiered via Billboard. “It was a lot of fun breaking these songs down to their core, stripping them naked and giving them a new outfit,” singer Steven McKellar tells Billboard. “To see what else we could bring out of them and what else they could say. These versions allow the listener a closer look and hopefully a more intimate experience of the original album.”
Available via Wind-up Records and one year since the release of the original record, the acoustic record also features three bonus tracks, “Letters from the Sky” and “Save Yourself”, plus an ethereal cover of Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself,” that premiered a few weeks prior via Consequence of Sound.
Following appearances at Bonnaroo and Firefly this Summer, the band will continue across the country on a headlining tour this July. With a handful of upcoming shows with Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness, the band also announce today that they will be direct support for Nothing But Thieves this Fall. The tour sees them travel to Canada, down the west coast of America through the Pacific North West and into Southern California, with another leg in October that brings them to the East Coast and into the South.

![]() While singing the blues in dive bars throughout Northern Minnesota, a 12-year-old Cobi dreamt one day of performing on the biggest and most renowned stages in the world. He knew that music made him feel more alive than anything else and that he wanted to bring his art to a much larger audience.
After spending a few years in the Boston band Gentlemen Hall, a synth heavy alternative rock band signed to Island Def Jam Records, Cobi left to pursue his solo efforts. Cobi’s heart and desire to play his soulful style of rock and folk outweighed the early success his former band was achieving.
Cobi’s debut single, “Don’t You Cry For Me”, as powerful of a song as they come, caught the ear of industry veteran Lyor Cohen who immediately signed Cobi to his new label 300 Entertainment (alongside Grammy nominated artists Fetty Wap and Highly Suspect). The track features a seventies vibe with a moog under Cobi’s soaring vocals complimented by his layered backing vocals. Since it’s premiere on Interview Magazine in May, the song has garnered over 5 million streams on Spotify, peaking at Number One on the Global Viral Spotify Charts.
Cobi has spent most of this year on the road with Above and Beyond, touring the world performing at iconic venues including Royal Albert Music Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, the Sydney Opera House, the Greek Theater and more. Now, Cobi returns to the West Coast for a handful of dates with Augustines.

“[River Wider] is a pretty track with a nice cello line complementing a very catchy vocal melody, completing a folk-pop sound comparable to Sufjan Stevens or Fleet Foxes.”
– Stereogum
Boston progressive folk duo Tall Heights have announced the release of their debut major label LP, Neptune, out August 19 on Sony Music Masterworks. Neptune is the follow up to 2015’s Holding On, Holding Out EP which was met with critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and Wall Street Journal who compared their emotive harmonies and poignant lyrics to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Sigur Ros and Bon Iver. Of particular note is the track “Spirit Cold”, the lead single from the forthcoming release which has quickly reached over 5.6 Million streams on Spotify.
But now, they’ve released another new track, “River Wider” and I gotta say, I like it waaaaaay better! Either that’s good….or bad. I don’t know??? Check it out here and see if you agree:
The multi-talented singer songwriters, composers, and instrumentalists featuring Paul Wright on cello/vocals and Tim Harrington on acoustic guitar/vocals got their start busking on the streets of Boston, growing up in a neighboring town in Massachusetts. Neptune is a far lusher construct than those early acoustic days — along with pristine and emotive vocal harmonies, there’s subtly chugging electric guitar and a spare descending bassline on “Iron in the Fire,” ethereal synthesizers and a spacious drum part on “Spirit Cold,” a brittle splash of percussion to open “Backwards and Forwards” and feedback created by two cellphones on “Cross My Mind.”
The band is on tour all summer through autumn including an opening slot for José González. For a taste of Tall Heights’ captivating live show, watch the band’s stunning live performance of album single “Spirit Cold”HERE.

“The four piece pop band from Vancouver are upbeat and undoubtedly having lighthearted fun with their music, and the song is layered in sugary harmonic vocals and melodies for you and your friends to get dark (or drunk) to.” – VICE’s Noisey
“a danceable exploration into experimental indie pop” – Culture Collide
Vancouver indie-pop darlings The Zolas have released a cutting-edge video for their fuzzed-out, guitar-driven pop anthem “Swooner”, which just reached #2 on the Canadian Alternative Chart this year. The interactive live video was shot on four GoPro cameras mounted in a special 360° tripod that allows the viewer to pan around the room and explore different viewpoints. Make sure to watch on Chrome or Firefox!
The Zolas’ Swooner LP, released this year via Light Organ Records, dives headlong into vibrant, experimental pop, showcased by stirring modern production, highlighted by flashes of grungy hard-panned guitars, Prince-like synth flourishes, eurodance vocals and electric pianos. The band is heading out on a North American tour in June, including a stop at NXNE Festival and Pemberton Music Festival.

The Temper Trap’s eagerly awaited third studio album Thick As Thieves is set for release June 10th on Glassnote Records. The band has released plans for an extensive North American tour in September/October following a series of select album release shows (SF, LA, NYC) in June. Tickets will be available for public sale beginning today via thetempertrap.com. A full listing of the dates can be found below.
The album’s anthemic lead single “Fall Together” – dubbed “a powerhouse” tune by Billboard – has been given a dance-floor ready update by fellow Aussie act Just A Gent. The “Fall Together” Just A Gent Remix premiered and you can check that out below.
Thick As Thieves marks the first time The Temper Trap has collaborated with outside songwriters in their history, with striking results. Justin Parker (Lana Del Rey, Sia, Bat For Lashes) worked on “Fall Together”, whilst the album also features collaborations with Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter), Malay, co-writer & producer of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange and Pascal Gabriel (Ladyhawke, Goldfrapp). Working with these exceptional producers and co-writers allowed The Temper Trap to explore a new musical ground while remaining true to their inimitable signature sound.
