Advance Streaming: Blitzen Trapper – Wild and Reckless

On November 3, the Portland, OR-based Blitzen Trapper will release Wild & Reckless, a new album born of their staged musical of the same title and also a companion to their 2008 breakthrough album Furr. Today, NPR Music premiered the album in its entirety as a First Listen and called it “a sprawling, sumptuous testament to Weird America.”

The New York Times said, “Missing Tom Petty? He lives on in Blitzen Trapper’s Wild and Reckless, an accomplished slice of classic rock that unabashedly sounds like Mr. Petty singing a Springsteen song with the Heartbreakers’ California guitars and a harmonica intro from Neil Young.”

Consequence of Sound said, “Music-wise, the song is the equivalent of an adrenaline shot of invincibility — the kind of anthem people turn up loud in the car as they’re speeding off to some unknown destination, the wind’s blow their only guidance.”

The album Wild & Reckless was born from the stage production that the band spent the better part of a year producing. The half musical, half rock-opera dealt with heroin abuse, desperation, true love and western power structures. The story evoked a bygone era of Portland with this sci-fi love story, featuring a rock-and-roll score that paired unreleased songs with favorites from the band’s catalog.

Following the success of the production, the band took 7 original songs from the production and developed the theme further into the 12 songs that comprise the new album Wild & Reckless.

Frontman Eric Earley also sees the record as a companion and extension of their 2008 album Furr. “Wild and Reckless is something like a cross-eyed stepchild to Furr, in that it chronicles the darker dystopian stories of rural and suburban west coast death-drive via a riffing psychedelic landscape. Ten years after Furr with all its talk of murder and the end of the western world, it seems there’s more to tell.”

Blitzen Trapper is Eric Earley (songwriter/singer), Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (drums, vocals), Michael Van Pelt (bass) and Marty Marquis (keyboard, vocals). Wild & Reckless was produced by Eric Earley and Michael Van Pelt and was recorded by Gregg Williams at the Trench, in Portland, OR. It was mixed by James Brown (Foo Fighters, Kings Of Leon, Blitzen Trapper’s All Across This Land) at The Union.

The band will embark on a national tour with select support from Lilly Hiatt this winter to celebrate the release of the album. Find a full list of tour dates below.

MISSIO – 3 part docu-series: Skeletons

RCA recording artists MISSIO has announced the long-awaited premiere of a powerful new visual accompanying their latest single, “Bottom Of The Deep Blue Sea.” Directed by Evan Spencer Brace (Phantagram, Tiësto), the clip marks the latest visual accompanying tracks featured on MISSIO’s acclaimed full-length debut, LONER, available now at all digital music retailers and streaming services.
In addition, we will see the arrival of Skeletons, an exclusive new docu-series chronicling MISSIO’s remarkable story thus far. The first installment of the three-part film – directed by longtime MISSIO collaborator Jeff Ray (Sigur Rós) – premieres today at MISSIO’s official YouTube channel.

LONER has proven one of the year’s most significant debuts, highlighted of course by MISSIO’s breakthrough single, “Middle Fingers,” available now at all DSPs and streaming services. Released at the top of 2017, “Middle Fingers” quickly blew up at SiriusXM’s Alt Nation where it ascended to #1 in the influential “Alt-18 Countdown” before ultimately reaching the top 10 on Billboard‘s “Alternative Songs” chart as well as the top 20 across Billboard‘s “Mainstream Rock Songs,” “Hot Rock Songs,” and “Rock Airplay” charts. “Middle Fingers” is joined an equally popular companion video, now boasting nearly 5 million individual views via YouTube alone.

 

LONER – which also features such dynamic tracks as “Everybody Gets High” and ” KDV (Ft. MISSIO was founded in 2014 as a new sonic outlet for Colorado-born musician Matthew Brue and Houston, TX native David Butler, the two musicians teaming up to create something unlike anything either had done before. The duo’s widescreen amalgam of inventive production technique, lyrical wit, and endlessly insistent pop hooks instantly proved a sensation with “I Don’t Even Care About You” – featured on 2015’s debut   – rising to #7 on Spotify’s “Viral 50-Global” chart after first appearing on the automated “Fresh Finds” playlist.

The MISSIO EP was followed by “Can I Exist,” featured in a truly extraordinary companion video that earned such prizes as “Best Video” at 2016’s Austin Music Video Festival and the “Audience Award” at 2016’s New Orleans Film Festival. Newest Love: Motherfolk

Cincinnati’s alt-folk favorites Motherfolk have just announced that they will be re-releasing their sophomore album Fold, clocking in with four new tracks, unreleased videos, and behind-the-scenes photos. Describing their sound as “indie rock with a twinge of modern folk”, Fold ranges from introspective jaunts to anthemic rock’n’roll. With tireless touring and energetic live shows that draw in the audience, Motherfolk has established themselves as one of the Midwest’s most exciting upcoming acts. In a contemporary independent music scene inundated with up and coming bands, it takes a unique outfit to break through that noise. A truly exceptional group must exhibit authenticity, raw talent, and electrifying chemistry. This, of course, means there are very few of them. Motherfolk, formed in 2013, is certainly one of those most unique and dynamic acts.

Motherfolk began as a collaborative effort between Nathan Dickerson and Bobby Paver, two college friends with a penchant for writing songs with one another. In the first year of the project, the two songwriters made frequent trips to Nashville to record their first endeavor. In 2014, their eponymous debut album showcased the duo’s musical prowess through a genre-bending collection of elegantly crafted songs.

Since then, Joel Call, Ethan Wescott, Karlie Dickerson, and Clayton Allender have joined Motherfolk’s ranks, and the band has made a name for themselves touring all across the nation. The outfit’s high-energy live performances have won over audiences from coast to coast, and their infectious musical persona has become one of the most exciting rising success stories in the indie scene.

In 2016, Motherfolk released their highly anticipated sophomore effort, Fold. Clocking in with eleven compelling tracks, the album further defines the band as an act that effortlessly melds a slew of influences together to manifest their sound into a splendidly cohesive, original pursuit. On the heels of their acclaimed LP As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide and new single “Nothing Makes Me Happy”, Vancouver trio Said The Whale have announced a string of US tour dates. The chart-topping, JUNO Award-winning outfit will be taking their dynamic live show down the west coast in support of their fifth studio album – released earlier this year. Previously operating as a five-piece, the current trio has created their most collaborative, focused record to date. Earlier releases highlighted the contrast between the two founders’ eclectic rock influences and salt-of-the-earth folksiness. Here their styles become one, which makes for their most captivating live performances yet.

A decade since the band’s formation, Said The Whale have now taken the project back to its freeform roots while simultaneously venturing forward into uncharted art-pop territory. Despite the new album’s many adventurous sonic forays, it remains true to the spirit of their classic work. At its core, As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide is a singer-songwriter record, guided by introspective lyrics and alchemical group harmonies from Ben, Tyler, and Jaycelyn.
After so much change and uncertainty in recent years, Said The Whale has emerged as a unified force. They’ve evolved, but the DNA is the same, and the group’s musical partnership is more fruitful than ever.

Over the past ten years, Ikebe Shakedown has refined a sound that defies genre. Their tracks bring the primal elements of ’70s soul, raw funk, and cinematic Western soundtracks together with a relentless groove and soaring melodies. Each release has successively pushed their explosive instrumental style further, wowing audiences in the U.S. and around the world. Now, after considerable time building their own analog studio, Hive Mind Recording, hitting the road with some of the most revered acts in the Brooklyn soul scene, and soaking in the wisdom that comes from day-in, day-out living in NYC, Ikebe is back with their third LP, The Way Home, (Colemine Records), an album that takes these sensibilities to new heights.

While the band has always been known for danceable grooves, The Way Home delves deeper into what it means to move people. As they put it, “We live in a city with a relentless pace. Sometimes, that demands music that gets you up and shaking, but it’s just as much about getting ourselves up every day to take on this massive life in just a few square miles.” It’s that joyful struggle that keeps the record from being just another love letter to New York. Perhaps that’s why each song tells its own story, from the get-off-your-ass snare hits of “Penny the Snitch” to “She’s Knocking,” with its quiet-morning start that transitions to a glorious call to arms. Or “Blue Giant,” which boxes like Ali, floating until it stings you with full-band jabs. And though there may be more subdued moments, no song ever goes completely still – because NYC never stops. As the band says, “We wanted some tracks to be for those predawn hours, when someone’s still out there, keeping the city humming.”

The album’s first 45, “Supermoon” b/w “The Ally,” is a powerful assertion of the band’s place amidst the top of the instrumental scene. With “Supermoon,” premiering on The Big Takeover, the band aimed to make “A tune that expresses all the energy and excitement we feel moving through the city. From the opening wash of reverb to the last pummeling drum hits, we gave it an air of mystery, since we live somewhere where anything’s possible at any time, day or night.” For “The Ally” on the B-Side, the band sees it as the perfect complement to “Supermoon” — “We want to take the listeners on a journey from a barebones opening to an ending that rouses them from the stupor we sometimes find ourselves in, so they feel like they can take on the world.”

Black Kids New Album Rookie Out Now

Black Kids are finally back, and their new album, Rookie is out. The record, their first release since their 2008 debut album Partie Traumatic, was recorded and co-produced by Andy LeMaster at Chase Park Transduction.

Why did it take the band ten years to record a new album, you ask???
“Much like Odysseus and Co., on our journey to make the ‘difficult second album,’ shit got rough,” singer Reggie Youngblood says. “A few of us heeded the siren call of ‘side projects.’ Tumultuous relationships and periods of Imposter Syndrome also impeded progress. Worst of all, I couldn’t write a chorus. And for a band that worships The Chorus, this was problematic.”

After touring exhaustively in support of Partie Traumatic, Youngblood and his bandmates — bassist Owen Cohen and keyboardists/vocalists Ali Youngblood and Dawn Watley — resettled around the U.S., in Brooklyn, Portland, and Athens, Georgia. Reggie started a power-pop group called Blunt Bangs. Owen released records on Kill Rock Stars under the moniker Gospel Music. Ali and Dawn sang and played and crafted. In late 2015, the four convened in Athens to make “Obligatory Drugs”.

Rookie is more lyrically earnest than its predecessor, and Youngblood notes that the “bratty-ness” is toned down — “but just a lil’ bit,” he says. “Yeah, the themes from our debut are still firmly in place on our sophomore: I love you, but you don’t love me; you love me, but I don’t love you; you’re mean, I’m mean—shall we dance?” Ugh, FINE.

Andrew W.K Tour Dates

Party God Andrew W.K. is thrilled to announce his first new full-length album in over a decade. Andrew W.K. has officially began his first full-band concert outing in five years with “The Party Never Dies Tour“. Andrew brings his party-centric positivity across America and the previously announced UK tour dates are now moving from November to April, 2018.
