American Sunshine, Ashtar Command’s debut album, evolved organically, a labor of love from veteran musicians Chris Holmes and Brian Liesegang,  American Sunshine is an expansive and coherent album that defies being reduced to a single genre. It is a FANTASTIC album. I knew the band’s name had sounded familiar and once I heard “China” I knew for sure that I’ve heard these guys before. In fact, I heard “China” years ago, so it must have taken a while for the duo to perfect their debut. American Sunshine includes songs of exquisite beauty and ones that unabashedly rock.

The project features a remarkable group of guest artists. Working in identical studios in Los Angeles and Chicago respectively, the duo sent songs back and forth thereby growing fleeting ideas into full-fledged songs. The group enlisted musicians that seemed to suit the individual songs – people they had worked with or been friends with for years.

They were joined by guest vocalists Joshua Radin on “Mark IV,” Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (“Save Me”), Har Mar Superstar (“That’s How It Is”) and Rachel Yamagata (“Blister of the Spotlight”). The dreamy “Rosa,” already in heavy rotation at Los Angeles’ KCRW, is one of two tracks featuring Priscilla Ahn, while Z Berg’s crystal clear vocals provide a stunning counterpoint to the throbbing groove on “Gravity.”

Other guest artists include: Matt Walker (Filter, The Smashing Pumpkins) on drums, Solomon Walker (Morrissey) on bass, Mike Garson (David Bowie) playing piano, drummer Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.), Oliver Kraus (Beth Orton) on cello, Stewart Cole (Edward Sharpe) on horns.

New Video: Snow Patrol – “This Isn’t Everything You Are”

Yes, I know — I’m a little late on sharing this. Better late than never though!

Snow Patrol has premiered their latest video for “This Isn’t Everything You Are”, from the forthcoming release, Fallen Empires. Previously unavailable in North America, the video, filmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, showcases the band in the role of a tango bar’s house band.   The heartfelt, “This Isn’t Everything You Are” encompasses the love, anger, reconciliation and raw emotion of the dance floor contestants in perfectly juxtaposed composition.

Snow Patrol will release Fallen Empires on January 10, 2012 via Island Records.  The current single, “Called Out in the Dark” is now available for purchase via iTunes  and the video can be streamed here.

New Video: CSS – “City Grrrl”

Fresh off their second US tour of the year, CSS have released the video for “City Grrrl,” the second single off their latest album, La Liberacion.  The eye-popping, colorful video shows Lovefoxxx with the pink hair and black lipstick heralded in the song’s chorus, showing her effortless swagger.  The track is one of lead singer Lovefoxxx’s most autobiographical songs to date.

She explains: “I revisited my teenage years while living in the suburbs of my hometown. I’d be on the floor of my bedroom making the most ridiculous clothes and glue fake colored hair or x-ray pictures on clothes. I’d be sporting goth make up at 8am and when I hit the streets people would curse me from their cars in the most aggressive way.  [Calling me] ‘drag queen’, ‘whore.’ “  The song captures the sentiment of feeling like a true outsider and yearning to escape to a big city to find fellow outcasts.

(I LOVE the pink hair she rocks in this vid.)

New Video: Outasight – “Tonight is the Night” (+ free mixtape download)

The video for Outasight‘s track “Tonight is the Night” has been released! Check it out! I don’t know about you, but it makes me wanna parrrrrrr-ty…and ride bikes through the city at night.

Things are really taking off for Outasight. He’s just taped a performance for an episode of 90210 that will air in December and appeared on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live yesterday. “Tonight Is The Night” is one of the hottest songs in the country right now as the song has starting burning up the radio charts. In its first week at radio, “Tonight Is The Night” was the #1 most added song on Top 40 radio.

Billboard recently ran a story where Outasight reflects on the sudden exposure. “There are so many ways to distinguish yourself, doing shows, doing mixtapes, or doing videos, and the label has been extremely supportive in all that process,” Outasight says. “Things are really starting to whirl now. It’s been a lot of hard work to get to this point, but it’s fun. It’s real. I’ve enjoyed it and I’m taking it all in.”

New Album: The Cure – Live at Bestival 2011

ATTENTION: All fans of The Cure (OMG – I’m so excited!!!)

Sunday Best Recordings is thrilled to announce the December 6th release of The Cure: Bestival Live 2011, a live recording of the iconic bands incredible, career-spanning two and a half hour set performed at this year’s Bestival.

The double album, which is split over two CDs and also available as a digital download is made up of thirty-two Cure classics, including “The Lovecats,” “The Caterpillar,” “Close To Me,” “Friday I’m In Love,” “Lullaby,” “The Hungry Ghost,” “The End Of The World,” “Just Like Heaven,” “Grinding Halt,” “Jumping Someone Else’s Train” and “Boys Don’t Cry.”

Of the live album, Robert Smith of The Cure says “We had such a great time in the Isle of Wight at Bestival that we wanted to release this show as a way of thanking fans and islanders alike. Bestival is the best!”

All profits from the sale of this album will go to the Isle of Wight Youth Trust (Reg Charity No: 1087163). The Isle of Wight Youth Trust is a charitable, independent and professional organization offering counseling, advice, information and support services to young people aged 25 and under on the Isle of Wight (the home of Bestival) and, in some cases, their parents or carers. The Youth Trust has been working on the Isle of Wight for 27 years and has made a positive input to the wellbeing of people locally. www.iowyouthtrust.co.uk

Eileen Monks, Director of The Isle of Wight Youth Trust, says; “What wonderful news that The Cure should choose us, an Island charity of 27 years, to benefit in this way. This came completely out of the blue and at a time when it is becoming extra hard to raise funds to support our work with children and young people on the Island, further cementing our association with young people in their many interests and aspects of their lives. We would like to thank Rob da Bank for his continuing support.”

Rob da Bank, founder of Bestival says “Since I was 15 and backcombing my hair, donning my sisters eyeliner and singing the lyrics to “A Forest” into my hairbrush I’ve had an unhealthy fascination with The Cure. To say it reached its peak at Bestival 2011 is an understatement, as after seven years of pestering I not only landed The Cure to headline Bestival, but now appear to be putting out one of their live records on my own record label. How strange! For any of the 50,000 who were at Bestival and saw all or some of the two and a half hour set, this live album will transport you back. For fans of The Cure who didn’t make it I know this will be a legendary addition to your Cure collection!”
