Alex Frankel Still Got It

Alex Frankel (Holy Ghost!) released his Still Got It EP with two remixes by France’s Breakbot (La Fiesta Remix and Club des Vedettes Remix), a Choices Remix and the instrumental version of the single. Earlier Alex Frankel shared the video for “Still Got It”, an anthem for embracing the next step whatever it may be, all out now on CASUAL / Ed Banger. Alex celebrates everybody’s return to the dancefloor with a wildly fun video that finds him dancing outside some of France’s iconic dance clubs and reveling in front of party flyers. The photos of French club exteriors featured in the video were pulled from Prost’s book After Party. He teamed up with motion designer Dixsaut to turn them into the dance party on the streets the video invites us to join.

“Still Got It” is a glimpse into Alex’s world as he works towards a full length in 2022.

“Still Got It” finds joy in resilience and celebrates the personal spark each of us has that fortifies our optimism even in hardship. It’s a quick glance back while dancing into the future that invites everyone, “Let’s have a toast to staying young as we get old”. The song plays with some of the hallmarks of classic 80s pop and reimagines them for this moment, with a wave of euphoria that keeps rising as it builds from just Alex’s voice to a choral arrangement performed by the East Coast Inspirational Singers choir.

The Breakbot remix of “Still Got It” (Breakbot Club des Vedettes Remix) was shared by Adult Swim Singles as part of their 2021 program, and puts a playful and synthy spin on the single. The rework, by French electronic mainstay Breakbot, is especially fitting as the original single marked Alex’s initial release for Ed Banger, rendering him the first American signee to the legendary European label. Listen to it here. Alex also shared a celebratory new DJ mix last week on Magnetic Magazine to kick off the summer with his blend of house, funk and disco.

Alex says of the songs origins, “I played the demo for Thibaut ( Breakbot) one night at Bernie’s Restaurant while we were outside on a smoke break  (back when, you know… people still ate dinner out) and on the spot he demanded we go try it on the audience at his gig that night. The response was great and after that, I knew I had to finish it. I called the East Coast Inspirational Singers, my favorite gospel group in NYC and they came by to help me get it there.”

Alex Frankel first emerged as one half of beloved NYC duo Holy Ghost! whose hybrid of synth pop, disco, and a range of electronic music made them an international dancefloor and festival staple. Along with their own albums and EPs for DFA and West End, the group have been in demand remixers sought out by their peers like LCD Soundsystem, Phoenix, and Cut Copy. Alex has also done remixes for US Girls, Naeem, Neon Indian and Moby.

New Music From OMD!

Synth-pop pioneers OMD return with their dazzling 13th studio album The Punishment of Luxury which sees them combine the wistful nostalgia and idealized romance of their previous work while stepping out of their comfort zone. The LP is out September 1st on White Noise Records.

The follow up to the critically acclaimed English Electric (released in 2013) The Punishment Of Luxury is a daring collection of stylish synth pop and masterful songwriting which will certainly rank alongside their very best.

Written, recorded, produced and mixed by OMD – Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys – the album is the sound of a band in their prime. “On this album, we have managed to make beautiful things out of noises and repetitive patterns,” explains Andy. “The trouble is, we just can’t help but write a catchy melody!”

The track and album are named after an 1891 painting by the Italian divisionist Giovanni Segantini that caught Andy’s eye. Andy explains, “Most people in the western world are materially better off than their predecessors ever were and yet we are unhappier. Now we have many possessions that we don’t need because we’ve been persuaded to buy. This is the punishment of luxury.”

Described by The Quietus as “not just one of the best synth bands ever – they are one of the best bands ever,” OMD’s influence has become ubiquitous. The xx, the Killers, and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy have cited OMD as an inspiration, and the likes of Future Islands and Chvrches show traces of OMD’s DNA.

Are You In or Are You Out? Of Course You’re In

“…like what might happen if Beck produced a track for LCD Soundsystem.” – Stereogum

“Think of this new track as the nonchalant older kid that just embodies cool. It doesn’t have to try very hard… Try to get this one out of your head.” – Earmilk

Black Kids, who have announced their new track “Obligatory Drugs”, have released the first of some new music since their 2008 debut album Partie Traumatic. The single appears on their forthcoming sophomore album Rookie, out September 15.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! The Debut Album From Night Drive Is Heeeeeeeere!

I can’t even tell you how LONG I’ve been waiting for this! It feels like YEARS! Rodney Connell and Brandon Duhon make up the duo that is Night Drive.

Fun Facts:

Both of the guys started as frontmen for the bands MoTel Aviv and Glasnost (!!!YASS! I remember loving Glasnost).

They previously supported acts such as Yelle and Digitalism — again YASSSS!!!!

Night Drive is the type of music you would hear on a car stereo if Giorgio Moroder and Ray Bradbury were driving late at night through a buzzing metropolis. Inspired by the bygone era of glamour and excess, kaleidoscopic neon lights, Studio 54 and Tony Wilson’s Hacienda, the band pulls influence from acts such as Brian Eno, New Order, OMD, The Drums and LCD Soundsystem to name a few. Night Drive rides a nu-wave of fast-tempo, synth-based electronic sounds driven by rich guitar melodies and arresting vocal hooks.

Newest Love: Rondo Mo – “Overflow”

rondomo
“Overflow” marks the first official release of Rondo Mo, the pseudonym of South-Londoner Robbie Redway. With his distinctive blend of dark, soulful electronica, this is unmistakably the sound of a promising new artist. The vocalist, producer and instrumentalist excels in creating a mood  that can appeal to both dance lovers and a more indie audience, with even a nod to a darker R&B form. Reminiscent of acts such as Caribou, LCD Soundsystem and Bob Moses, this style of connecting electronic and acoustic sensibilities is having somewhat of a renaissance period and Rondo Mo reveals himself to be a very welcome addition to the fold. He manages to channel the sound, rather than imitate, and completely envelopes the listener in his world of shadowy synths and melodies.

The track begins with a deep bass pulse heard far in the distance, before Redway’s voice creates a light for the listener to use to navigate. The sultry vocals and growing instrumentals build on a track that begins in darkness, while maintaining a sense of danger with lyrics of going in “way above my head”. The spacious washes and lone piano keys add a level of anticipation before the listener is hit with the beat. “Overflow” offers an eclectic mixture of sounds throughout, juxtaposing a darker subject matter with a groovy bassline and snaps. There are also moments where Redway’s driven production is punctuated with more emotive breakdowns, the airy textures giving space for the vocals to take control, and the track ultimately ending with the appropriate emotional climax.

The story of Rondo Mo begins in Cornwall rather than his native London. After a wide range of collaborative work, from releasing an album with house don Midland to touring as a session member of alt-folk band To Kill A King, Redway found himself in a ‘stylistic bewilderment’ and took to the reclusive Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Setting up in a remote barn, with no human contact and only the bleak moorland landscape for company for six weeks, he began working to reign in on a sound influenced by the limited vinyl collection he brought with him. Redway integrated the best elements of seventies’ soul and contemporary house music with a more cyncial vibe of eighties electronica, culminating in a sound delicately positioned between a confident dance sound and a moody underlay of  indie music. “Overflow” is a striking introduction to Rondo Mo, and a piece of music that affirms the intrigue surrounding this artist.

Check ‘Em Out: argonaut&wasp

argonaut

After the recent release of their latest single “Loser Like You”, Brooklyn-based dance rock crew argonaut&wasp are set to release their new EP Ha! Fiction.

Ha! Fiction’ is a colourful, imaginative EP born out of change, struggle and big ideas. Having relocated to New York City a year ago, the move meant a bigger workspace, more rent and a new perspective on music.

This transition brought changes greater than we could of predicted…the sight and sounds of NYC changed our perspective on music, why we do it and how we listen to it. This EP is a reaction to all of that. And as we scramble to make sense of it, we realize it’s just what we make it.” – argonaut&wasp

Throughout the EP there are clear nods to greats like Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, The Clash and Daft Punk, as the band takes the listener on a imaginative, lyrical journey. Their disco-infused single “Loser Like You” is a taste of an EP that is guaranteed to be a whirlwind musical journey, free flowing with funk-driven guitars, quirky vocals and thoughtful lyrics.

Opening track “Paisley” features a sun-kissed bassline paired with fun, care-free lyrics that call for dancing. It’s an introductory track that perfectly encapsulates the band’s musical style — gooey and groove-filled sounds given weight by lyrics inspired by big changes and growing pains – and sets the pace for what’s yet to come.

Newest Love: Stone Cold Fox

scf

“The five-track effort is likened to a roadtrip, “a collection of journeys” in which Stone Cold Fox venture out to discover who they really are when all the layers are peeled back and they’re forced to look in the mirror.”
– Consequence of Sound

“…delivering dancey and joyful synthesizer beats, overlaid with groovey guitar leads. The band has an innate knack for finding the sweet spot of catchy music that isn’t shallow, leading you to want to teleport from your shitty apartment to an island paradise. “
– NOISEY

“…while it retains energy, [Firing Squad] opts for something far more ethereal. The track basks in a haze of guitar effects and subtle performances, proving that Stone Cold Fox can sound subdued without feeling lethargic…”
– The AV CLUB

“Amongst the slew of synth pop revivalists, Brooklyn-based four piece Stone Cold Fox are doing things a little differently. By staring their song producing process with an indie-rock core, they craft songs that are essentially guitar led, before channeling that heart into an addictive electronic, synth-heavy format.
– Wonderland Magazine
The best kind of road trips are the ones that are spontaneous. You know where you want to go, you have a final destination in mind – you just don’t necessarily know how you’re going to get there. But that’s ok, because it’s all about the journey, right? Brooklyn-based four piece, Stone Cold Fox want to take a road trip with you- they’ll get you to where you want to go, you just gotta let them take the wheel, because in the end whatever will be, will be. And the soundtrack? Their EP, Tunnel Vision.

Tunnel Vision is a stunning contradiction- a collection of journeys made up of distorted dance synths that bleed with a rock-heavy heart. Written, recorded and produced over a period of two years, the sound of Tunnel Vision resembles a mindset that is anything but narrow minded- instead, it’s a collection of tracks that skew in every which way, that ultimately steer back to it’s original course to create a wistful, cohesive sound. “Tracks started as total rock songs, then turned into chilled electro songs, eventually finding its way somewhere comfortably in the middle,” explains guitarist and vocalist Kevin. “They find middle ground with a rock core and a dancey pulse,” he adds. So, imagine a world where John Lennon is rose from the dead and conceived a love child with The Strokes while listening to LCD Soundsystem and Beat Connection – that’s the kind of world that Tunnel Vision creates.

If you’re digging that sound — check out the EP here and now:

Video: Night Drive – “After Dark”

unnamed (5)

“Rides a nu-wave of fast-tempoed, synth-based electronic sounds driven by rich guitar melodies and arresting vocal hooks.” –Details

”Austin-based duo reach back to 2000s LES-wave, and a little further, forthe mix of disco, post-punk, and electro that drives ‘Position I.’” –Bullett

Night Drive is not a band. It’s a mission. Two secret agents, Rodney Connell and Brandon Duhon, sent to recalibrate the future of electro-pop.

Inspired by dark wave and synthpop alike, and drawing influences from artists such as Brian Eno, The Knife, The Drums, New Order and LCD Soundsystem, the driving beat and dancing synths of Position I makes you want to jet off to some great nightclub in the sky.

Rodney and Brandon began writing together after the tragic death of a young woman they both were dating, unknowingly at the same time. This collaboration left them with the collection of songs from which Night Drive was born.

The duo paired up with Lobo Sucio Creative for “After Dark,” directed Javier Antonio Avellan. “This is our third video with Night Drive,” notes Avellan. “We have explored the realms of experimental and abstract filmmaking in our previous collaborations, so with this video we decided to delve into a fictional world to tell the story of a young girl on a late night adventure.” Check out their previous videos below (I’ve been in love with “Drones” for a few weeks now)!
