New Video: The Phenomenal Handclap Band – “The Unknown Faces at Father James Park”

Phenomenal Handclap Band speaks about the video:

As a teenager, Father James Park was the local park where my friends and I were able to go and not be bothered by our parents or other authority figures. We used to meet there as often as possible to hang out and clear our minds, and since there were no adults around, it also became the place we’d go to expand our minds. The Unknown Faces at Father James Park is about the inherent peer pressure, confusion, and tumultuous times that teenagers have. For the video, we thought the best way to reflect this subject matter would be to edit together found footage along the lines of the various PSA’s  we were subjected to in high school. They were so humorless and terrifying at the time, but looking back, it was a lot of unnecessary warning against what turned out to be healthy experimentation.

Phenomenal Handclap Band is also preparing the release of the follow-up to their acclaimed, self-titled debut album. Form & Control, PHB’s ambitious new work takes their clever fusion of international psych, soul, and cosmic disco a bold step forward.  With co-founders Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand at the production helm, Form & Control finds the band once again deftly mixing and matching seemingly disparate musical genres, with a musical palette that now includes prog-pop, new wave and modern leftfield dance.

Form and Control will be released February 14, 2012 on Tummy Touch Records.

New Track: Kele vs Sander van Doorn – What Did I Do (Feat. Lucy Taylor)

“What Did I Do” is the latest monster tune to come from the masterful mind of Sander van Doorn. In collaboration with Bloc Party’s Kele, Sander continues his meritorious rise as one of the most in demand producers in dance music today. Like a thoroughbred breaking from the gate, “What Did I Do” will get your pulse pounding and body moving from note one.  Infectious melodies are layered perfectly with easy to relate to lyrics, sure to cause more than a few hands-in-the-air sing-along moments in the very near future.

Dominate alternating melodies, a driving bassline and very creative key play create dramatic builds and breaks which marry singer Lucy Taylor’s vocals as only Sander can. It is the perfect peak hour banger ready to infiltrate clubs across the globe with another one of Sander’s big room anthems.

With the morphing of pop music into dance music over 2011, this song rests quite comfortably between the two. Challenging perceptions has been a strong suit for Sander, and he continues to open up peoples musical horizons by being a true producer, not a genre slave.

New track: Clock Opera – “Lesson No. 7”

In contrast to their previous release, “Belongings,” the band’s new single “Lesson No. 7,” is an intense and aggressive cut that portrays Clock Opera’s depth and diversity in their song craft.  Along with Guy Connelly’s powerful vocals, the ferocious synths, punchy bass, explosive machine-gun snare and frenzied guitars give “Lesson No. 7” a contagious and relentless energy that makes standing still impossible.

Clock Opera will release their Lesson No. 7 EP on October 3rd on Moshi Moshi / Island Records.

Included on the EP is “Seven Hours,” having already given a glimpse of their varied influences and abilities with their singles to date, “Seven Hours” heads in a completely new direction again and displays a gorgeous, emotive beauty that is becoming a signature in their sound.

Alongside these 2 new songs, there is a very special world first to complete the package.  After the critical acclaim of his long awaited 2nd album, Tom Vek lends his unique production expertise to remix another artist for the very first time.

Tracklist:

1. Lesson No. 7
2. Seven Hours
3. Lesson No. 7 (Tom Vek’s Tripping Mix)

Clock Opera has been steadily building a reputation as purveyors of cerebral, original and utterly captivating music over the last year.  Alongside their single releases on Kitsune and Moshi Moshi, they have supported the likes of Yeasayer and Everything Everything on their UK tours and received rapturous acclaim from their live performances at SXSW and most recently Field Day festival in London.

OMD is Back

Click to watch the video for new track "If You Want It"

We’ve all swooned over OMD’s hit “If You Leave” (at least, if you’re normal you have); well now Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphrey are back for the first time in 15 years with new album History of Modern.

In these electro-friendly times, OMD’s influence has become ubiquitous. The XX, Brandon Flowers of The Killers, and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy have cited OMD as an inspiration, while the likes of La Roux, Cold Cave and The Horrors show traces of OMD’s DNA. Andy notes that today OMD is perceived to have its place in the “pantheon of relevant popular music history”, something which seemed unthinkable during the Britpop era.

Upbeat and bristling with ideas, History of Modern was mixed by Arctic Monkeys/Foals engineer Mike Crossey, and offers a slightly rawer kind of pleasure to the serene melancholy of OMD’s early-’80s moments. In a nice touch, the record’s sleeve was designed by Peter Saville, who was responsible for the iconic artwork of those first OMD albums. Saville was the in-house designer at Factory Records, the label that released OMD’s debut single “Electricity in 1979. For many, History of Modern will be their first experience of OMD, and one hopes their curiosity will lead them to other oldie but goodies.

“I suppose the nice thing is that, just like in the early days, we made this record simply because we fancied making a record,” says McCluskey. “There was no pressure to make a record in order to sell records and sustain a career. It was like making a first album again.”

US Tracklisting:

  1. New Babies: New Toys
  2. If You Want It
  3. History of Modern (Part I)
  4. History of Modern (Part II)
  5. Sometimes
  6. RFWK
  7. New Holy Ground
  8. The Future, The Past, And Forever After
  9. Sister Marie Says
  10. Pulse
  11. Green
  12. Bondage of Fate
  13. The Right Side
  14. Save Me (featuring Aretha Franklin)

Spin has released a great article and you can check out another new OMD song, “New Babies: New Toys,” by clicking here.
