Check ‘Em Out: SSCION

Hailing from Kansas City’s unexpected art-scene, SSION has reached the apex of synth-pop perfection with the album Bent, out August 7th on Dovecote. Led by the charismatically avant gender outlaw Cody Critcheloe, SSION creates music that is simultaneously dance inducing and cheekily crass and that irreverently pokes fun at contemporary culture. Tracks are meticulously crafted with reverbed synth, deep bass and vocals that verge on the addictive. Critcheloe’s creativity is not bounded by music making, as he has been commissioned to produce music videos for a multitude of heavyweights in the unconventional-pop world, including Peaches, Gossip, CSS and Santigold as well as promotional videos for the vibrant outsider designer and fellow Kansas City local, Peggy Noland.

Drawing from a multifaceted artistic background, SSION is a total multimedia experience playfully on the vanguard of culture, replete with high-concept visuals, performance, costuming and make-up. The enhanced hard copy re-release of Bent will include previously unreleased bonus tracks and remixes from MNDR, Grimes, Nightfeelings, Physical Therapy and more.

Bent features the lushly reverbed introverted single “My Love Grows In The Dark.” In the accompanying video, conceived and produced by Critcheloe, the front man portrays himself as the antithesized pop-star, journeying through a surreal house of androgynous dancers and confronted with issues of representation, indifference and intimacy. The track got a dreamy disco remix treatment by Nightfeelings (Nick Weiss of Teengirl Fantasy).

SSION not only nods to the most influential and iconic pop artists of the past, but also stands to carve out its own place in the future as a whole new breed of pop.

SSION will play select live dates across on the east and west coast, appearing with Gossip, JD Samson and Sharon Needles. He will also be performing  at this year’s San Francisco Pride.

Download: Spirit Animal – “Crocodile Skins” (Big Black Delta Remix)

New York City’s funk-heavy psych-rockers Spirit Animal has released Big Black Delta’s remix of their single, “Crocodile Skins.” Big Black Delta is the solo project of Mellowdrone founder and one-time M83 guitarist, Jonathan Bates. His otherworldly, four-to-the-floor take on “Crocodile Skins” features a distorted, pulsating bass line, spaced-out vocals, and a mean, reinterpreted guitar riff.

Spirit Animal also has live dates coming up in NYC and Washington, DC. Onstage, they are manic yet precise with a non-stop show full of big solos, tight grooves, and sweat-drenched sing-along moments. Be sure to check out the crazy, psychedelic music video for “Crocodile Skins” in case you missed it last month.

With mixing complete on their follow-up full length, Spiritia Animalia, Spirit Animal is poised to deliver the back-breaking rock and shit-kicking funk missing from the modern music landscape. The band, led by Steve Cooper, has already drawn comparisons to LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective and Faith No More for their blend of irresistible hooks and riffs, complemented by the band’s tight rhythm section. Add in a healthy dose of frontman-freakout, and you have Spirit Animal.

Martin Solveig – The Night Out EP

When Martin Solveig’s live performance of ‘The Night Out’ at Radio 1’s celebration of Pete Tong’s 20 years at the station prompted the veteran disc jockey to ask for a copy pronto, it gave a clear indicator that the record – written, produced and performed by Solveig – had a very bright future.
Several months on, and having contributed heavily on Madonna’s latest studio album, ‘MDNA’ – including the lead single ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ featuring Nicki Minaj and MIA – Solveig’s focus returns once again to his ‘SMASH’ project. ‘The Night Out’ E.P is packed to the seams with a raft of remixes and bonus material that’ll cater to all fans, both new and old.
The A-Trak remix set the ball rolling having topped the Hype Machine as well as receiving full support from both Annie Mac and Pete Tong over recent weeks. Always keen to exploit up and coming talent, Solveig also welcomes in newcomers TheFatRat for what will be a firm favourite in big arenas, as well as new duo Maison & Dragen.
Martin’s own take on A-trak’s remix makes for great aural pleasure, and then comes the inclusion of ‘Can’t Stop’ into the package, providing another slab of pure pop fun from Martin Solveig & Dragonette. Throw in a truly awesome instrumental version of Ready 2 Go (Initial SHE version), a Don Diablo take on ‘Hello’ with the rapper iSH (Why Are We Whispering remix) AND finally the Les Bros remix of ‘Big in Japan’ and the realisation will dawn that this is indeed one hell of an E.P.
