West End Motel – Only Time Can Tell

Click image to go listen to songs from West End Motel’s album Only Time Can Tell

Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds is receiving praise for his side project West End Motel’s newest release Only Time Can Tell, out now on Warner Bros/ADA. The album is streaming in its entirety at AOL Spinner in addition to PASTE Magazine, who applauds its “acoustic-driven, country-twinged tracks.” Similarly, MTV declares it “hypnotizing,” praising the “brittle guitars and hushed, husky vocals,” while Alternative Press states, “rockabilly and surf rock with strong flavors of Stax and Motown soul prevail, yet a smorgasbord of disparate influences also insinuate their way into this mix, ensuring no two songs are alike.”

The 8-song set is now available to purchase on iTunes. Rolling Stone is streaming the album’s first single “Burn It Down,” praising its “brightly shout-out-loud vocals, warm and soulful textures, swooning funk melodies and a breezy beat that’s downright feel-good music.”

West End Motel will kick off a 3-week tour on November 28 in Washington, D.C. – making stops in New York, Boston, Chicago, and more – wrapping up December 15 in Hinds’ hometown of Atlanta. See below for more details.

Only Time Can Tell is the highly-anticipated follow-up to Hinds’ acclaimed 2011 debut Don’t Shiver, You’re A Winner which SPIN proclaimed “a welcome departure from Mastodon’s thrashy, progged-out  fare…sounds like Tom Waits and Tim Burton co-hosting the creepiest  vaudeville show ever,” and Pitchfork praised for its “playfulness and off-the-cuff amiability.”

West End Motel began in 1993 under a bridge in Atlanta, where Hinds first met longtime friend Tom Cheshire. Describing themselves as a “conglomerate of losers, poets and hobo-sexuals,” the pair write acoustic-guitar driven songs enriched with horns and keys, with the end result sounding like Nick Cave fronting Gogol Bordello. The project pre-dates Mastodon and offers an important glimpse into Hinds’ musical influences.

“I grew up listening to Chet Atkins play guitar, and I grew up listening to Brian Setzer play guitar,” explains Hinds. “Jimmy Bryant, Speedy West, all these country-chicken-pickin’-flying-’round-the-guitar-neck guitar players. I got really inspired by it. I’m from way down in the country. It was pretty common to have the interests I had when I was that age. MTV had some hair metal on there, but I was more interested in this rockabilly vibe. Stray Cats were really big at the time, in the ’80s. It was epic.”

Only Time Can Tell Track Listing:

  1. Burn It Down
  2. El Myr
  3. Witch Is Dead
  4. If I Only Had Tomorrow (Second Chances)
  5. Bite
  6. Forgiveness
  7. Only Time Can Tell
  8. Valentine

New Music: Steven A. Clark

There is always that one that got away and Steven A. Clark’s soul filled track “Seashore” off his upcoming album Fornication Under the Consent of the King (due on on September 11)represents just that.  Clark tells Rolling Stone, who just premiered “Seashore,” that the track is a metaphor for losing someone and just hoping they’d come back. I’m at fault for losing her, yet I long for her to return to me like the waves. I wrote this song while living in a windowless warehouse thinking about my ex and watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on repeat.”

Last week Steven also shared his video for “Don’t Have You,” which was directed by Unkleluc. Steven A. Clark disclosed that the “song is a confession to my ex, it’s all the things I didn’t say to her when I had her.” The video represents Steven moving forward in his life by burning the memories with her from his past.

Alongside Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, the Fayetville, North Carolina native is a top forerunner in the Future RnB movement, spearheading a confident and new type of indie-rock and hip hop infused rhythm and blues that belies their young age. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Clark’s songwriting reflects his absolute acceptance of the effects of love, including the adoration and despise, bliss and pain, and drinking and drugs. Building on the self-produced, written, and performed sound of STRIPES, Clark takes his synth-kissed sound one step beyond, cutting away niceties and digging into the core of his personal afflictions with F.U.C.K.

Clark is adding some needed seasoning to R&B, handling his own production, songwriting and recording. Like his peers, the musical artisan croons gut-busting lyrics about his personal life. But it’s his artistry that’s more vast, incorporating rap, R&B and funk into his skin-burrowing confections.

Trace it back to his matriculating at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina, where he found solace in relationship therapy through singing. He put collegiate life on the backburner in his junior year, chasing his musical dreams down to Miami where he cut his teeth working in a professional recording studio and set initial groundwork for STRIPES. But it was when he began recording F.U.C.K., that he finally learned to let go.

Check ‘Em Out: Capsula

Wild. Energetic. Hot. Psychedelic. A Furious Hologram. A Space of Sounds. Droning Riffs. Garage Rawness. Shinny Surf Pop. Exploring Vocals. Feedback and Noise. CAPSULA.

The trio has returned with their sophomore album and sonic masterpiece, In The Land of Silver Souls (Krian Music Group).

Capsula’s Martin Guevara (vocals/guitar) and Coni Duchess (vocals/bass), along with Capsula drummer, Nacho, collectively create the musical storm, a whirlwind of psychedelic wonder and punk rock fury. Their music roars with a combination of garage rock toughness and modern style that have earned them a wide range of comparisons from The Stooges and The Pixies to Sonic Youth and David Bowie.

Although the band now lives in Bilbao, Spain, all three were born in Argentina.  Martin and Coni’s creative process was largely affected by living through the Argentinean dictatorship. A time when the censoring of music’s most fundamental subjects- love, sex, justice, revolution, drugs- created an atmosphere in which subversive lyrical and musical expression was a necessity. You don’t have to understand every lyric of a Capsula song to capture the unbound emotion of their dirty rock.

Their first single “Hit ‘n’ Miss” kicks off with a classic garage rock riff, before Martin rips into a Bowie-esque tale about the rise and fall of those seeking fast stardom in the big city.

Listen: Capsula – “Hit ‘n’ Miss”

Capsula will be touring the US in 2012, following their third SXSW showcase, on Thursday March 15. Witnessing Capsula live is an experience not easily forgotten, as they tear though blistering washes of guitar and pounding rhythms delivered with the true essence of punk rock attitude, garnering a great deal of acclaim from Rolling Stone, Wired Magazine and The Chicago Tribune among others.

Their sneering rock and roll attitude may suggest they don’t care if you like their music or not, but after one listen to In The Land of Silver Souls, it’s going to be hard not to. Deep grooving rhythms and wailing guitars are ever present as the band shifts between blazing riffs, spacey exploration, shimmering walls of sound and thick catchy vocal melodies.

New Video: ANR – “It’s Around You”

Click image to check out the video on RollingStone.com

Miami duo ANR just released their full-length Stay Kids (Deluxe Edition) on 10k Islands and Rolling Stone has premiered the video for the soulful, hurricane-inspired ballad “It’s Around You.”

Stay Kids is a rhythmically propulsive, psychedelic trip that was inspired largely by recent floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, and other environmental disasters.  Much of the album’s lyrics meditate on how such ‘natural’ disasters affect individuals and humanity at large.  However, sonically-speaking the album is by no means morose.  Instead, the synth-heavy and often danceable material feels triumphant.  Each song is a journey through carefully sculpted, dreamy pop soundscapes with frequent, unexpected and exciting detours.

Though the band consists of merely two members – Brian Robertson (Keys, Vocals) and Michael-John Hanock (Vocals, Drums) –they create a powerful sound filled with layered melodies and bountiful hooks.  It has landed them shows with bands like Animal Collective, Neon Indian, No Age, and Fucked Up.

Hancock elaborates on the inspiration behind and creation of “It’s Around You”:

“This started out real simple, with just the vocal loop and thoughts of how it’s been six years since a major hurricane hit South Florida. The idea of the song, and the chorus in particular, is to sonically, and even lyrically connect with the traditional half time modern R&B crowd participation song style, but to have the actual concept of the song relating to evacuation procedures during a natural disaster. The chorus is telling people how to use their hands, feet, and voices to signal a helicopter from the roof of a house or building. What’s “around you” in this case is water and debris. Our friend Jillian Mayer directed the video and has come up with a lot of cool ways of illustrating the meaning of the song, while visually keeping it up-beat, like Brian did with the production of the song.”

Highly Anticipated: Hot Hot Heat

The new Hot Hot Heat album Future Breeds will be out June 8 through Dangerbird Records.

The band’s fourth album is a call to action. After leaving their previous label, the foursome stripped away all the unnecessary elements in their lives, built their own studio in Vancouver, and emerged renewed and recharged. The resulting record is at once propulsive and volcanic, and fueled, as ever, by candy-coated melodies that hurl you through Bays’ lyrical world.

Over the years, the Canadian band has delivered their kinetic brand of rock and roll live to thousands, toured the world with bands such as Modest Mouse, Kings Of Leon, The Walkmen and Queens of the Stone Age, and released several albums, garnering praise from everyone from Pitchfork to Rolling Stone and Spin who described their sound as “aggressively exuberant funk-punk.”

Here’s the tracklist for all to see:

1. YVR
2. 21@12
3. Times A Thousand
4. Implosionatic
5. Goddess On The Prairie
6. Zero Results
7. Future Breeds
8. JFK’s LSD
9. Jedidiah
10. Buzinezz Az Uzual
11. What Is Rational?
12. Nobody’s Accusing You (Of Having A Good Time)
