New Track: Atlas Genius – “If So”

275

Atlas Genius will celebrate the February 19th release of its debut album, When It Was Now (Warner Bros. Records), with an appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” The band will perform the album’s first single, “Trojans”.

On their new track “If So,” Atlas Genius groove with dream-like guitar licks, shifty hi-hats and a meaty bass backbone,” said Rolling Stone.

Stream: Atlas Genius – “If So”

Atlas Genius’ Keith and Michael Jeffery wrote, recorded and produced When It Was Now at a studio they built in their hometown of Adelaide, Australia. The album captures Atlas Genius’s singular combination of sophisticated musicality and warm, wistful spirit. Infused with a classic sensibility, each of the songs would fit seamlessly if somehow slipped into a long-treasured mixtape.

The  band will kick off a sold-out tour with Imagine Dragons this Friday,  February 8th, at The Marquee in Tempe, AZ. On February 20th, Atlas  Genius will play a record release show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg  in Brooklyn, NY and appear at SXSW on March 13th (KCRW’s Official SXSW  nighttime showcase) and 14th.  Tickets just went on sale for Atlas  Genius’ first North American headline tour, which launches on April 25th  at Antone’s in Austin, TX. See the band’s website for more details and more tour stops.

Check ‘Em Out: Tin Can Radio

Explosive indie-dance/art-rock five-piece from Brisbane, Australia, Tin Can Radio, are celebrating the release of their debut album, Chase the Sun, Hold the Night with a massive 20 date tour around metropolitan and regional Australia. The tour spans over April and May of 2011.

The debut album, Chase the Sun, Hold the Night, is the accumulation of two acclaimed single-releases and many hard months in the studio. The 11 track LP runs a knife edge between accessible and fun, and ambitious and sonically challenging; journeying through dreamy landscapes, sing-along hooks, punchy guitar driven riffs and grinding dubstep breakdowns. (AWE-SOME!)

Lead singer Tom Wearne explains, “The album is a reflection of our shared struggle in trying to do exactly what we want to do, our attempts to live forever, to never sleep and to have never ending, uncompromised fun. You could say that these are over-riding themes in the songs, but they are also over-riding themes in our lives and the reason why we make this music.”

Mad Caddies Show

I'm no photographer, but I tried!

As soon as I found out punk-ska group Mad Caddies were coming to town, I was pulling out the datebook and marking it down. I’ve been a fan for years, and had no idea that they were even touring.

The band formed in 1995 in California, and they’ve got 6 albums to date. (They’ve also got 6 band members…what if they added on a bandmate for every new album? Hmmm…)

Anyways, I told some friends about the show and convinced them to come. A couple of them didn’t know their music, and asked what kind they play. That’s actually a tougher question that you’d originally think. I mean, they are ska. They are punk. But, they’re also many others in between such as swing, reggae, and jazz. Put it all together in a blender and you’ve got a MAD freakin’ time!

I prepared for the show for about a week by digging out my old Caddies albums and dancing around my apartment. I was really pumped. The night of the show I had sushi and cocktails beforehand and got to the venue right in time. The band had just started their first song of the set.

The crowd was perfect. What made it even more awesome was that a lot of them knew the words to the songs! Hooray! The band did a great job of being lively on stage, especially Ed Hernandez on his trombone. He stood out on the edge poking that thing out into the crowd, lovingly. There were at total of 3 songs that I was praying to hear: “Wet Dog”, “Backyard”, and “Drinking for 11”. They DID play the latter (which I figured there was a good  chance of hearing that one because it may very well be their most popular song), and I DID love dancing and singing the words. I tried to yell out to them “WET DOG! WET DOG!” but they couldn’t hear me.

Regardless of not hearing the other 2 songs, they did play a brand new song and they still put on a great show. They made a couple new fans in my friends out of it, too. AND if I heard correctly, they’re planning to come out with a new album next year!

Guitar Center Takes “Legends Collection” on Tour

Guitar Center will take its iconic “Legends Collection” on the road beginning May 23 for a 4-city tour that will make weekend stops in Fountain Valley, La Mesa, San Francisco and Hollywood. The “Legends Collection” will feature three of rock’s most famous guitars – Eric Clapton’s “Blackie®” Fender® Stratocaster® and Gibson ES-335, as well as Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny” Fender® Stratocaster®. Purchased for over $2.4 million from the Clapton Crossroads Centre charity auction at Christies New York in 2004, these three guitars are among the most treasured guitars in rock history.

Assembled in 1973 by Eric Clapton himself from the parts of several guitars, Clapton played “Blackie®” almost exclusively on stage and in the studio from 1973-1985, recording hits such as “Cocaine,” “I Shot The Sherriff,” “Wonderful Tonight,” “Further On Up The Road,” “Lay Down Sally” and various live versions of “Layla” as well as being featured on several album covers and videos. His Cherry Red Gibson “ES-335” was used to record Cream’s versions of “Badge” and “Crossroads” as well as many other historical performances during the 40 years he owned it. Steve Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny,” which Guitar Center purchased for $623,500, was used to record his classic love songs including “Lenny” and “Riviera Paradise.”

Home to the largest collection of vintage instruments in the nation, Guitar Center is also proud to showcase a hand-picked selection of its most rare and sought-after vintage guitars as part of its Vintage Road Show.  With Vintage locations in Hollywood, Nashville and Manhattan, Guitar Center’s vintage collection includes hundreds of the rarest and most valuable guitars, amplifiers and other instruments, including an impressive assemblage of ’50s and ’60s Strats and Les Pauls, handcrafted archtops, Jazz Basses, P-Basses and more.

Your Soul Wants to Dance

After waiting a few years, Tortured Soul is set for their sophomore album release on the 24th. Their debut Introducing had lots of people talking, amazed with the new aspect of LIVE house music.

Now, Did You Miss Me is a 13 track continuation of Introducing. It’s being released on their own new label, TSTC Records.

Here’s a couple things that have been said about Tortured Soul:

“The future of house music…you have to see them live.” – Gilles Peterson, Radio 1

“Tortured Soul create blissed-out tracks that curl around your head like cigarette smoke.” – XLR8R

Incorporating soul with pop and dance, Tortured Soul has dance-able tracks with jazz elements. They’re hitting up some awesome cities this spring, including Pittsburgh, so I’m definitely going to try to make this show.

Here’s their touring schedule:

03/27: New York, NY @ Fillmore NY at Irving Plaza
04/04: West Hollywood, CA @ The Roxy Theatre
