New Label: Rock It Science Labs

Rock It Science Laboratories is a fresh music label that zooms forth from one of San Francisco’s favorite
warehouse party-maker crews turned club promoters, musicians and remixers.
“Wiggle Room” is the first release on the Rock It Science Laboratories label. DJ Fame and Eric Sharp have all thrusters going full throttle, turning out a twister of a track.
There’s some “Wiggle Room” remixes already, too.  Two high honored cadets of the Chicago club sound, Santiago & Bushido take it on as well as Trillbass who takes us to the dark forest of Dubstep, winding us down creepy turns and shivering drops. Finally Andrew Phelan and George Cochrane make the list here as well.
Check all of it out at BeatPort by clicking here.
Also, I’ve got a free download for ya! It’s another Groove Armada “Paper Romance” remix by the aforementioned Eric Sharp. After having a listen to a lot of remixes for “Paper Romance,” I gotta say this one’s a good one to have…especially if you’re like me and haven’t gotten sick of the song yet.

Familiarize Yourself With Ozomatli

The band Ozomatli has been around since 1995. You might have heard of them, you might not have, OR you might not know that you actually have. I heard them on my satellite radio awhile ago and liked what I heard. Then, in my various music browsings, I discovered a little more.

Here’s how you might not know that you do know of Ozomatli: Remember the movie Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore in 1999? They are the band playing in the reggae club when her character Josie ingests “weed cake,” a cake with marijuana. In the scene, the song playing is “Cut Chemist Suite.”

Pretty cool fun fact, I think.

The band currently has 7 members, but they’ve in the past had as many as 10. Some of those members included DJ turntablist Cut Chemist and Chali 2na, who both moved on to a different project, Jurassic 5.

That’s another fun fact!

Anyways, Ozomatli’s latest album came out in April this year. Fire Away is definitely worth listening to. You may just find yourself a new favorite. You’re welcome.

Band members Jiro Yamaguchi and Ulises Bella describe Ozomatli:

“You drive down Sunset Boulevard and turn off your stereo and roll down your windows and all the music that comes out of each and every different car, whether it’s salsa, cumbia, merengue, or hip hop, funk, whatever, it’s that crazy blend that’s going on between that cacophony of sound is Ozomatli, y’know?”

New Video: Macy Gray’s Celebrating the World Cup

Macy Gray has just released a new soccer-themed video for “Beauty in the World” to celebrate the World Cup. The video, directed by Giuliano Bekor, features models hitting the turf in the Los Angeles Coliseum, where they exhibit some pretty fancy footwork, all in high heels and tight skirts. At first, it’s really cheesy…but it gets somewhat better. Besides, I’m sure it’ll be a hit with all the male football fans.

Click to watch the video

Macy Gray’s new album The Sell Out will be out next week, and she’ll be on making some TV appearances:

June 22  – “Good Morning America”
June 23 – “The View”
June 23 – “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”

Highly Anticipated: New Pete Yorn!

On September 28th, Vagrant Records will release the latest studio album from Pete Yorn. This collection follows Yorn’s two 2009 releases. Rolling Stone said, “Yorn has found his voice on Back and Fourth, a mostly acoustic beauty.” It was followed in September by Break Up, a collaboration with Scarlett Johansson.

Pete Yorn’s forthcoming album, a self-titled volume with a plain black cover, was recorded on the spur-of-the-moment, in the summer of 2008. Yorn was in the middle of making (his last album) Back & Fourth in Nebraska when he got an email from Frank Black (The Pixies) suggesting that they record some tunes. Intrigued by the notion of experimenting with Frank, Yorn hopped a plane to Salem, OR, where the two set up an impromptu studio. They recorded the album in a mere five days even though the singer-songwriter-guitarist came down with the flu two days into the process.

“Frank didn’t give a shit about getting sick, so we stayed in the flow,” recalls Yorn. “He has an incredible ability to distill a song down to its core.”

Frank recalls, “Pete told me he wanted to better define himself as an artist. I think he just wanted to rock out. But as we headed down a path of realization I stripped him down a whole bunch. We battled in the best sort of way. I tried to get the session into a fearless and raw place, and to his artistic credit Pete took his songwriting to a fearless and raw place. This listener will find his or herself sitting right next to Pete on the couch. And the record totally rocks out.”
