Mark your calendars if you’re in the Pittsburgh area! Saturday, July 27, 2019 from noon until midnight, YINZFEST is happening at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale.

YINZFEST prides itself on showcasing the underground Pittsburgh scene and counter-culture. All three stages AND the courtyard will be used to feature over 30 bands performing their original music, including 3 from Wake Up On Fire’s own brand new developmental roster: Mellowphobia (think Catfish & the Bottlemen), Murderboat (think Art of Drowning era AFI meets Dookie-era Green Day), and Soul Alliance (shoegaze grunge inspired by Alice in Chains, Zeppelin, Cage the Elephant, and Slowdive).

Also announced with Round One (of three) were Dopamine, Larga Veda, Mellowscape (indie rock), Before You Leave (Deftones meets Middle Class Rut), Rebel Revolver, Wild Blue Yonder, and Not Your Average Losers! Twenty other bands along with poets, magicians, comedy and more, will be announced in two more musical rounds (May 20 and June 10), and a non-musical round on June 17.

A fundraiser will also be held to benefit Creative Life Support.

AND —- they’re doing a 90s sub-theme! Many bands will be playing one 90s cover in their set. Flannel, JNCOs, hacky sacks, disposable cameras — they are all super encouraged — and turn those cell phones off, too.

Byron Nash & Plan B: ” A Band Born Out of Pure Friendship and Love For Making Music”

Photo: afayepr.com

Byron Nash, a Pittsburgh based musician, has been doing this music thing for a long time. While playing lead guitar of the band Formula412, he worked on writing and recording some ideas and keeping them on the “back-burner” you could say. This “back-burner” was called ‘Plan B’.

After collecting over 10 years of songs and ideas, Nash took some music production courses and eventually started his own music company, BNDEEPendent Music. He and his friend Evan Thorsen had been jamming and hanging out together for years; when they finally decided to play some of their songs live in 2014. After great reception, they were asked the following year to play at Kayafest, a restaurant that was having it’s 20th Year Anniversary block party. They put together a makeshift band of talented musicians and again were met with great praise…enough that they finally decided to go forth full throttle as a band.

All they had to do was come up with their name. It was suggested that their name simply be ‘Nash’, but Byron felt weird about it being just his name. So — ta-da!!! Byron Nash & Plan B it is!

And they’ve got a little bit of something for everyone, too! The band is  “a well-balanced fusion of rocking dual-guitars, funk-and-soul, straight-forward and emotional vocals, simple songwriting, and a little bit of jam-band and fusion mixed in there.”

The band is having a very special release party for their very first EP, The Late Bloomer, this Friday at The Funhouse at Mr. Smalls.

Show: Fitz and the Tantrums

I came really super close to not being able to make it to this sold out show here in Pittsburgh this past Monday. And oh, let me just say, I would have thrown some MAJOR fits and tantrums if I had missed this!

But, my friends over at BB Gun Press totally saved the day and helped this girl out. And I couldn’t have been any happier. If you keep up with my ramblings, you’d know that I couldn’t WAIT to see Fitz and the Tantrums perform “The Walker” live. At one point, I really thought they weren’t going to play it, either! They waited until the very end, and performed it for one of their encores! Which, surprised me because I thought I’d hear “The Walker” earlier and they would save “Out Of My League” for an encore. BUT, they played it earlier, and “Moneygrabber” was the second song in their set. Oh, and they did a pretty awesome cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” too.

I really wanted to upload the video of “The Walker”…BUT:

  •  It sort of got screwed up and ended up being split into two videos.
  • My phone isn’t letting me upload it.
  • Anddddd you can hear me screaming like a maniac that just got let out of a mental institution.

So, here’s a few pics instead.

Also, I don’t wanna forget to shout out to the opening bands of the evening, too. Ivy Levan was beautiful and wonderful!

Here’s a pic from her Twitter:

IvyAnd here’s a video incase you need introduced:

And also a shout to Saints of Valory, who were also quite awesome…and nice guys. I’m not finding any official videos to post, but if you want to check out their new EP Possibilities that just came out yesterday, you can check it out here. I like “Long Time Coming.”

Upcoming Show: Mimosa

Earlier this month, Mimosa came out with another album, Silver Lining. If you are a fan of The Glitch Mob or electronic dub and breaks, you’ll love Mimosa.

Personally, I’m a big fan of last years, Flux For Life.

Anyways, Wednesday, November 3rd Mimosa is playing in Pittsburgh at Mr. Smalls Theatre with The New Deal and Two Fresh.

I’m more of a new fan when it comes to The New Deal and Two Fresh. And I enjoy The New Deal more than Two Fresh. But, that’s just me. And I haven’t even listened to THAT much of either, so maybe that’s not even accurate…who knows?

Check out this live video of The New Deal performing “Home” in Brooklyn. If you refrain from dancing, (I mean, c’mon, even if it’s just a little bit in your seat) you must not have a soul.
