Download: The Cannanes – “Crawler”

thecannanes

“We Drink Bitter,” a Cannanes song released in the band’s native land in 1987 that later surfaced in America on its 1993 Witchetty Pole album, has been called one of the best “Is it really over?” songs of all time. Although co-written and performed by The Cannanes, the song’s lyrics are attributed to K Records founder and Beat Happening leader Calvin Johnson.

Now, The Cannanes have answered their own tune. “It’s a nod to We Drink Bitter,’” says band member Frances Gibson about “Crawler,” the latest single from the upcoming “Small Batch” EP, the Australian duo’s first release in over 11 years.

Nearly 26 years since “We Drink Bitter,” Gibson sings “And no, I won’t say it again, There’s no good reason why this shouldn’t end. And things keep happening that can’t be true, Does what you say make sense to you?” “Crawler” even repeats “Is there love in the sound of a closing door?” one of the most stinging lines from “We Drink Bitter.”

“Even when you know someone really well, they can still shock you,” explains Gibson of the sentiment. “Things fall apart.”

The Cannanes have been releasing modest, ramshackle records since forming in Sydney, Australia almost 30 years ago.  Though essentially underground, the band has amassed a legion of fans in that time, including Kurt Cobain, who, it was later discovered, name-checked The Cannanes as a personal favorite in his posthumously published journals.

The upcoming “Small Batch” EP is the first release in over 11 years from band members Fran Gibson and Stephen O’Neil and is scheduled for release on March 19th.

Check out last month’s post where you can download another of their new songs, “Bumper.”

New Music From The Cannanes

thecannanes

Australian indie pop duo The Cannanes will issue their first official release in over 11 years on March 19th, 2013. The “Small Batch” EP contains the fun, bouncy songs that the band’s fans know them for (and that famously earned them a mention in Kurt Cobain’s journals.)  The Cannanes have been releasing modest, ramshackle records since being formed in Sydney, Australia by Fran Gibson and Stephen O’Neil almost 30 years ago.

UK producer Richie Phoe has his own take on the first single from “Small Batch” and his downtempo remix of “Bumper” is streaming and available for download now. BBC Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank has described Phoe as “Brighton’s Lee Scratch Perry” and fellow BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens calls his work “Bouncy dub at its very best.”

SPIN recently premiered the original EP version of “Bumper,” with columnist Marc Hogan writing, “Cardigan-owners, rejoice! Long-running Australian indie-pop combo The Cannanes have returned with ‘Bumper,’ the first taste of their first major release since 2002’s Trouble Seemed So Far Away. The ‘Small Batch’ EP, due March 19, is helmed by veteran members Fran Gibson and Stephen O’Neil; and while the production quality seems slightly more polished, the earnest melodicism remains.”

For the “Small Batch” EP, The Cannanes have once again collaborated with Explosion Robinson producer and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Hermann.  The six-track release sees Gibson and O’Neil at their best, back on familiar territory musing on the nature of friendship, love, and outer space that has characterized their best work over the last 27 years.

Brand New: !!! – “Slyd”

!!!

THR!!!ER, the latest full-length album from !!! is coming out on April 30th and earlier today the band shared with fans a sneak peek into the record via the song “Slyd.” One of the only tracks on the album not recorded with Spoon’s Jim Eno, “Slyd” stands out for another reason, as a tribute to sample-based club-floor classics but with the signature !!! slyness. Rather than go through the process of clearing samples, they decided to craft their own “samples” and cram them into a pumping, never static structure. Additional vocals are supplied by singer Teresa Eggers and !!! singer Nic Offer’s former Out Hud bandmate Molly Schnick.

And something that should come as a surprise to no one, !!! are hitting the road again. They’ll be playing San Francisco’s Noise Pop on February 28th, and then cruising around Europe before heading back to the US in May and June.

Video: MS MR – “Fantasy”

Today MS MR reveal their first official music video for their new track “Fantasy.”

The band explained:

“Shot on location in Jamaica, Queens with our dear friend and talented director Austin Peters, the video for “Fantasy” stays true to the main themes and questions behind the track: things we imagine or think we understand are not as they appear. This video presents a world filled with fantasies gone wrong where the mundane, the surreal and the supernatural are all intertwined and what is real becomes a matter of perspective.”

The song is off of the band’s debut album Second Hand Rapture out May 14th in the U.S. on Columbia Records.

MS MR continues to enthrall fans around the world with their compelling blend of pop. With “Fantasy” quickly rising to #2 on the Hype Machine ‘Popular’ charts. MS MR is the moniker for Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow. The duo’s debut Second Hand Rapture is comprised of 12 tracks and was produced by Hershenow, with additional production and mix by Tom Elmhirst. The duo recently played a handful of new songs during their sold-out stints at NYC’s Mercury Lounge and headline debut at the Echo in Los Angeles. You can catch the band performing at this year’s SXSW next month.

BRAND New: Caveman – “In the City”

Caveman_Caveman_art

On their self-titled sophomore album Caveman stretch their legs in a number of different, albeit cohesive, directions. Their highly anticipated return will come out in America via Fat Possum Records on April 2nd, and the first single In The Cityis available now for streaming here!

Caveman—a five-man vibe collective from NYC—released their first album in 2011. As first albums go, CoCo Beware was something akin to a moody statement of intent, a blueprint for a band quickly learning how to create horizon-wide rock songs that were equal parts intimate and expansive. Initially self-released and later snatched up by Fat Possum for re-release in early 2012, the record brims over with four-part harmonies, crystalline guitar lines, and tracks that see-sawed between echoey lullaby (“A Country’s King of Dreams”) to shoegaze-by-way-of classic-FM-radio sprawl (“Old Friend” — which btw is my FAVORITE song from them). The album quickly elevated Caveman from local band to watch to a sizable touring draw and formidable live act, as evidenced by stints on the road with the likes of The War on Drugs, White Rabbits and Built to Spill. Despite being the work of a brand new band, CoCo Beware displayed a kind of Zen-like ease. It was the sound a five friends settling into a nice groove; the music that happens when, for whatever reason, a lot of seemingly disparate elements finally fall into place.

“We all went up to Jimmy’s grandmother’s place in New Hampshire,” says singer Matthew Iwanusa. “That’s where the new record kind of started. It was literally the attic of her barn, lit up by Christmas lights. We’d all sit in this one room together and one by one we’d all go into the bathroom and record ourselves making the most psycho noises possible. It actually felt kind of like a weird breakthrough. We were all confident and comfortable enough with each other to try out these experiments, which extended itself into the making of the new record…which is really just an evolution of this vibe that we’d been cultivating for long time.”

With that, the guys holed up in Brooklyn’s Rumpus Room to start recording in earnest with Nick Stumpf (who produced the band’s debut album) and Albert Di Fiore behind the controls. As a result, the guitars on Caveman are bigger and more expansive, the rhythm section is tighter and more adventurous, the keyboards more opaque and pronounced. Like a marriage between Tangerine Dream, late period Slowdive, and Lindsey Buckingham, tracks like their new single “In the City” and “Ankles” boast synth lines that sound simultaneously retro and futuristic, while “Pricey” and “Never Want to Know” overflow with guitar sounds that could have miraculously floated off an old Cure album. It should be noted that James Carbonetti, the band’s primary guitar player, also happens to be one of the most highly regarded guitar makers in New York City.

And while Caveman’s music could certainly operate on the level of dreamy soundscape and still be excellent, the depth of feeling in front man Matthew Iwanusa’s lyrics helps weave the songs deeply into your memory. When Iwanusa sings “Where’s the time to waste on someone else’s life?” on “Where’s the Time,” it’s hard not to read between the lines. Wonder and regret seem to fuel the record in almost equal measure.

New Album Alert & Trailer Video: !!!

!!!

On April 30, !!! will release their fifth full-length album THR!!!ER.   “Over the course of many long van rides and post-coffee verbal riff sessions”, guitarist Mario Andreoni explains:

Thriller didn’t merely come to represent the selling of a lot of records…it became synonymous with an artist(s)’ and/or genre(s)’ artistic high-water mark.  INXS’ Kick is the Australian Thriller…Alanis’s Jagged Little Pill is the Canadian Thriller…Wham’s Make It Big is the blow-dryer’s Thriller…every recording by the 13th Floor Elevators is the dosed-man’s ThrillerSister Ray by Velvet Underground is the Thriller of musical fever dreams. One day at the studio, Nic [Offer, vocalist] drew THR!!!ER on a napkin and I liked it…then we made our THR!!!ER.”

Famous for their high-energy live shows and relentless touring schedule, the band have really focused their efforts on crafting an album with tighter song structures. To help with this, the majority of the album was recorded with Jim Eno, the drummer in Spoon and one of the key forces behind the boards for the band.  Like many people, Jim was a fan of !!!’s live show, but he felt that they too often tried to capture these performances in the studio. Instead of trying to chase this feeling, Jim encouraged them to create a different type of excitement by using weirder sounds, inventing new dynamics within each song and introducing unexpected changes. “They had this working flow that was a little rigid and I wanted to break them out of it,” says Jim.

With the members spread out across the country, writing new music wasn’t the easiest of processes. Andreoni offers that “In the past we just put albums together any way that works. That usually meant a lot of jamming on loose ideas.” For THR!!!ER, !!! went into the studio with everything written and a strong sense of each song’s shape. “We’ve never tried to make the same record twice, we might have accidentally, but we’ve always tried to push on. For this one it felt like we definitely shoved off from the shore,” says Offer.

THR!!!ER Tracklist
1.    Even When The Water’s Cold
2.    Get That Rhythm Right
3.    One Girl/ One Boy
4.    Fine Fine Fine
5.    Slyd
6.    Californiyeah
7.    Except Death
8.    Careful
9.    Station (Meet Me At The)

New Track: MS MR – “Fantasy”

FantasySingleCover

NYC-based, indie-pop duo MS MR has announced that their debut album, Second Hand Rapture, will be released May 14th in the U.S. on Columbia Records. Lizzy Plapinger (MS) and Max Hershenow (MR) began their musical collaboration in December of 2010, recording in secrecy, at Hershenow’s home studio in Brooklyn, NY over the course of 2011.   Produced by Hershenow, with additional production and mix by Tom Elmhirst, Second Hand Rapture is comprised of 12 tracks and includes the band’s debut single “Hurricane.”

In May of 2012 MS MR mysteriously released the eye-catching video for their single “Hurricane” (I posted it here) which was named “Best New Track” by Pitchfork and has since skyrocketed to over 1 million views.  Noteworthy media outlets across the world were instantly captivated by the then unknown act’s compelling blend of nostalgic, atmospheric pop.  “Hurricane” was the first of three additional tracks (“Bones,” “Dark Doo Wop,” and “Ash Tree Lane”, exclusive remixes by Twin Shadow, Tom Vek, Chet Faker and Charli XCX and music videos) released off of the band’s critically acclaimed debut EP Candy Bar Creep Show.  Debuted via a unique widget on MS MR’s Tumblr, the duo received praise for their unconventional EP to which The Guardian noted, “prepare to be blown away” and the Wall Street Journal raved, “a very promising debut.”

Having toured with Marina and the Diamonds and Grouplove last year, the band will make their debut this year at SXSW, perform at NYC’s Governor’s Ball and plan to tour through the release of their new album this summer.
