SSHH: “Supergroup” Like Whoa

sshh

UK band SSHH, made up of Sshh Liguz and Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr’s son and drummer for Oasis and The Who) is teaming up with TONS of amazing musicians (members of Oasis, Sex Pistols, Marilyn Manson, Amy Winehouse’s band, and more) for their upcoming album ISSUES. The album is a collection of covers using the members of the original bands! Heads up — it kicks ass!

The first single just premiered — it’s a cover of Sex Pistols’ “Problems”, featuring Glen Matlock, Pistols bassist, and Paul Cook, Pistols drummer.

ISSUES is a modern homage to all of the epic bands that made SSHH what they are today. The idea behind the record was simple. Zak and Sshh had been asked to do a radio series on SiriusXM, chatting through the music that has influenced them. But why not go a step further? Why not find the original rhythm sections from those bands and play with them? Why not make an album in the process?

The first call went out to Glen Matlock and Paul Cook, the bass and drums, the meat and veg of the Sex Pistols. If they were up for it, everyone would be up for it, and they were.  And thus, during the last week of November in Los Angeles, the project began. Clem Burke, Blondie’s drummer, turned up in the studio on day one to cut an unorthodox “One Way or Another”. Day two, Marilyn Manson’s rhythm men, Twiggy Ramirez and Gil Sharone, arrived for their turn. Fellow musicians Santa Davis and Fully Fullwood (of Peter Tosh’s Word, Sound and Power) also came forward and re-recorded Tosh’s original version of “Get Up Stand Up”, with an added touch from Eddie Vedder.

The duo moved on to London and got back in another studio for “one of the most intense recording sessions of [her] life,” according to Sshh. They began with “Babylon’s Burning” and “Jah War” with the rhythm section of The Ruts, followed by “Back to Black” with Amy Winehouse’s drummer, bassist, and musical director. Darren Moonie and Simone Butler of Primal Scream showed up for a full-on, no-holds barred take on “Shoot Speed Kill Light”. Guests also include Martin Chambers (The Pretenders), Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople), and Kenney Jones (The Small Faces, The Who), and production credits include Youth and Ian Brodie, among others. “Of all the people who’ve taught me drums – Keith Moon, my dad [Ringo Starr], all of them – Kenney showed me the most,” says Zak.

Zak and Sshh first came together in March 2006. Zak, playing drums on tour with Oasis, played a guitar riff down the long-distance line, Sshh recorded it, built it, and put it together, and their first track “Jet Engines” was born. Years passed as Sshh was in a different kind of studio as an award-winning visual artist and Zak was touring with Oasis and The Who. In 2008, the pair played a few gigs in East London under various band names, opening for Kasabian. The two eventually settled on SSHH, the call came from Sirius, an idea was hatched, and SSHH had ISSUES.

The result of those two mad, unpredictable, spontaneous, serendipitous weeks of phone calls, new handshakes, old hugs, musical conversations, long shots and crossed fingers is a record which straddles a huge swathe of modern music history. From the original rock ’n’ roll of the sixties through punk, reggae and dub into modern soul and electronica, this is a wild journey in just eleven steps. And despite all that, it exists as its own work, knitted together with the unique sound of SSHH – a fortnight in the making but a decade in its evolution. ISSUES will be released later this month, and proceeds from album sales will go to Teenage Cancer Trust.

Porter Robinson & Madeon!!!

portermadeon

Speculation and rumors of a collaboration between musicians and longtime friends Porter Robinson and Madeon (Hugo Leclercq) have long been internet fan fodder.

The duo put the rumors to rest dropping a surprise joint single “Shelter” (ft. Madeon on lead vocals) and announce a joint North American that will see the two share the stage for a collaborative live performance ft. music from both artist’s catalogs reworked and re-imagined for the stage.

Each made a name for themselves as solo artists who redefined electronic music from the inside out, expanding the genre from the festival stage to the pop charts and bringing electronic music into the global mainstream with their critically acclaimed debut solo albums, Porter’s Worlds (2014, Astralwerks) and Madeon’s Adventure (2015, Columbia).

“Shelter”- a brilliant shimmering, humanity-infused electronic pop – comes at a serendipitous time for the two young artists and sees the duo taking a hands-on approach to the songwriting process. To write, the two decamped to Madeon’s studio in Nantes, France  and the two wrote together in real-time, face-to-face, taking a decidedly old-school approach to the collaboration, inspiring and challenging one-another along the way. The result, “Shelter” is an ode to family ties as much as it’s a pop song that epitomizes their friendship.

madeonporter

“Both Porter and I started working with people in-person when we started making our respective albums and appreciated how much more collaborative you can get,” Madeon explains of their decision to work together. “Our intent was to make music that would reflect our friendship.”

“I see enthusiasm and inspiration as the most important currency you can have when you’re making music,” Porter adds. “It’s this weird sensation of being drunk on your own confidence and excitement that leads to so many creative breakthroughs. That effect was really exaggerated when we were working together.”

While this collaboration is a first for the two artists, they have played a pivotal role in each other’s work over the past decade of their young careers, providing feedback—sometimes brutally honest—about each other’s solo work. This laid the groundwork for a successful partnership. Having first met on an internet message board a decade ago as young Daft Punk fans who wanted to produce music, Porter and Madeon have pursued distinct but coincidentally parallel careers to become electronic music creators of their own, each has emerged out of the electronic music scene to become crossover electronic pop powerhouses.

Porter first caught the ears of tastemakers in 2010 with his track “Say My Name.” An EP on Skrillex’s OWSLA label followed and he signed to the venerated Astralwerks in 2013 when he was all of 21. The next year he released his debut artist album, Worlds, an expansive LP that included the songs “Divinity” (as heard in Google’s “Year in Search” commercial) and the landmark “Sea of Voices.” Worlds debuted in Billboard’s Top 20 and prompted the launch of the Worlds Tour, an interactive live show as ambitious at the album it was named for.

Madeon first came to global attention with his game-changing video and track “Pop Culture” in 2011. Early last year, he released his highly-anticipated debut album, Adventure, which spawned the singles “You’re On,” co-written with Jimmy Napes (Sam Smith, Disclosure), and “Home.” Having sharpened his live skills as an opener for Lady Gaga and with sets at Coachella and Lollapalooza, Madeon launched two tours in support of Adventure: Adventure Live and the Pixel Empire Tour.

To support the release of “Shelter” Porter and Madeon kick off a joint tour this Fall (dates below / more TBA) that will see the two share the stage for a collaborative live performance that combines the best of their individual catalogs into one interactive performance fusing emotion, live instrumentation, visual artistry and cutting edge technology. Fans will get to hear old favorites, newly re-worked cuts from Worlds and Adventure, a few surprises, and of course an emotional and affirming live delivery of “Shelter.”

The single and the forthcoming joint North American tour captures both artists as they enter a new phase of their respective careers.

Coleman Hell – “Flowerchild”

unnamed

Coleman Hell caught people’s attention last year with his breakout hit “2 Heads”, which has been streamed nearly 100 Million times across different platforms. His follow-up single, “Fireproof”, was released in late April and has already been streamed over 4 Million times. He has crafted a unique musical style, incorporating elements of folk, rock, dance, and pop and fusing electronic music with organic instrumentation.

Coleman’s new track, “Flowerchild”, continues this musical exploration. “We danced in the forest like flickering candles and ran our fingers across the trees. The fire crackled like a record in the 70s. And when the smoke clears you’ll be someone else. The person you leave behind will be sleeping like a baby, with daisies curling up your arms and roses in your eyes. Run wild you little flower child”

Along with his bandmates, La+ch and Michah, Coleman has spent much of the past year on the road, touring North America with Robert DeLong last fall before completing a US headline tour this Spring and recently selling out The Troubadour in LA following his appearances at Hangout Fest and Bottlerock Fest. He also supported Twenty One Pilots on their Spring Canadian tour and made a trip to the UK to play The Great Escape Festival. He is now appearing at a host of North American festivals over the summer, including Electric Forest, Summerfest, Pemberton, Wayhome, Osheaga, and Rifflandia.

Music Box Village

MBV

New Orleans Airlift is pleased to announce a new, ambitious endeavor to build a permanent home for their collaborative Music Box installation —The Music Box Village. Each Music Box house is a one-of-a-kind, interactive musical instrument disguised as a whimsical house, allowing visitors to explore, play, and create sound. Originally conceived by artists Delaney Martin, Taylor Shepherd, Callie Curry (SWOON) and Jay Pennington, and built in collaboration with dozens more local and international artists to date, each house is outfitted with hand-made pulleys, levers and other interventions, which are activated by guest musicians and visitors. The nonprofit organization recently acquired a 55,000 square foot forest with an adjoining metal fabrication warehouse in the Bywater, and plans to hold a grand opening of the new cultural destination in October 2016.

Since its creation in 2011, in part as a response to destruction and decay after Hurricane Katrina, Airlift’s flagship project The Music Box has drawn tens of thousands of people to experience a unique mix of ambitious sound art, memorable performances by local and world-renowned musicians, and one-of-a-kind musical architecture. Performance highlights include Thurston Moore, Wilco, Solange Knowles, Preservation Hall, Andrew W K, Mannie Fresh, Lost Bayou Ramblers, and Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, just to name a few.

This summer, musical houses from several nomadic iterations including New Orleans City Park, and houses built in Georgia Tech, Tampa Bay and Shreveport, along with some other surprises, will be installed for the grand opening. In the 2016–2017 season, Airlift will present an exciting lineup of local and international performers as well as new collaborative musical houses, including a Mardi Gras Indian house with Big Chief Darryl Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas.

New Orleans Airlift is known for organizing large-scale collaborative art and performance works, crossing cultures and expanding upon tradition. For the first time, the organization will offer a membership program to support their organization, in addition to tax-deductible giving, partnerships, volunteering and more.

To celebrate this announcement and invite the public to get involved, the organization is running a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to support the major build out and site improvements.

New Music From Digitalism!

Digitalism

Following a Hype Machine No.1 with first single “Utopia”, Pete Tong’s ‘Essential New Tune’ on BBC Radio 1, Digitalism unleash new track “Go Time”.

Saying that Hamburg hailing Digitalism’s third album Mirage stems from “the ecstasy” of “epic trips around the globe” is no overstatement. 10 years of touring, creating and scouting inspiration have cut a path for the duo that sits somewhere between nostalgia and futurism. This comes to a head in the second single off the album, “Go Time”, further proof of their ever-increasing appetite for adventure.

An indisputable pre-weekend anthem, it’s a huge track. Stemming from one simple loop, it evolved into “this huge stadium indie thing” as Jence and Isi put it. Leaving any stagnant competitors well behind them, Digitalism have tapped into that Thursday-night-feeling, yearning for a weekend yet to begin. This is the theme of the track: “Let’s get Friday out of the way”, chants a euphoric chorus, deliciously raw. Taking on this mantra, John Tejada and Mumbai Science have both delivered tasty remixes, with the latter creating an inescapably bouncy sound grounded in the youthful grit of “Go Time”.

Taking wistful electronica to new heights, expect a contemporary indie twist that keeps hold of a good dose of synth-mania. The old school finesse of hits like “Zdarlight” and “Pogo” are evident in both “Go Time” and first single “Utopia”, with a decade of knowledge gained over a career full to the brim with both live and studio magic.

“Go Time for us means ‘pressing the start button’ on your life and going for it” – and go for it they have. After a few years of doing everything from storming Coachella to a solid residency at London’s XOYO where they play live on April 28th, the album was whipped up in a cool 6 months, starting in February 2015. Its swift conception is clearly a reflection of their need to share this creative output with the world, and if “Go Time” is representative of the whole album, we should be just as eager to hear it as Digitalism were to make it.

Digitalism Live Tour Dates:

New Fave: Gemini – “Time To Share”

Gemini_TimeToSharePackshot

Listen: Gemini – “Time To Share”

Following the reveal of his breathtaking Wanderlust teaser video UK electronic artist Gemini (Thomas Slinger) reveals the lead single “Time To Share” from his forthcoming 2016 debut album Wanderlust.

Out today, “Time To Share” is vivid, verdant electronic pop infused with intercontinental influence. The track premiered yesterday via La Belle Musique and is now available to share via Gemini’s Soundcloud.

The first new music from Gemini in more than two years, the track sees the former dubstep overachiever beloved by Annie Mac and Zane Lowe embrace a lush, cinematic new sound inspired by his travels abroad.

Following the success of solo singles such as “Blue” and mixes for A-listers (Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey), Slinger felt compelled to break beyond genre boundaries. He retreated to a studio to radically rethink his sounds—and promptly got writer’s block. He packed up his belongings, left Britain and set out to travel the world, reigniting his musical creativity and discovering a latent talent for travel photography and film (catalogued via his expansive @ThisIsGemini Instagram account and in the Wanderlust Teaser) as he explored Norway, Sweden, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and more.

Channeling these cross-continental explorations into the intensely personal music on Wanderlust, Singer’s creative vision is now fully formed. Get your first taste of it now and listen to “Time To Share”.

“Thank you for being so patient. I’ve been on a journey of self-discovery that has led me to the darkest and most beautiful places on earth. From the northern lights of Norway and desolate lands of Iceland to discovering lost civilisations and climbing mountains deep in the heart of Asia.” – Thomas Slinger a.k.a. Gemini

The Royal Concept Tour Dates + Lyric Video For “Fashion”

unnamed (1)

“I dress like shit, call it fashion — but your fashion’s the shit”

The Royal Concept have announced dates for their upcoming fall headline tour exclusively. The Swedish alternative pop quartet will perform in major markets across North America in support of their brand new EP, Smile —available at all digital retailers now. You can see the full itinerary below.

Just last week, the boys premiered the lyric video for their latest single “Fashion.” Merging together retro-style performance footage and a striking color scheme, the clip visually complements the song’s distinct musical strut. Watch it HERE!

The band consistently garners acclaim from critics. LA Music Blog wrote, “The group continues to blend funk, indie, and pop, tying it all together with uplifting choruses that are perfect for the end of summer.”

To record Smile, The Royal Concept — David Larson [vocals], Filip Bekic [guitar], Magnus Robert [bass], and Frans Povel [drums]—entered a Los Angeles studio with producer Tony Hoffer [M83, Phoenix, Depeche Mode, The Kooks] behind the board. The EP’s five tracks bristle with an unshakable energy and swaggering charm. First single “Fashion” straddles the lines between funk, indie, and pop, converging on an anthemic refrain.

The Royal Concept ignited an international buzz with their 2013 smash “D-D-Dance.” It soared to #2 on Hype Machine, as follow-up songs “Gimme Twice” and “World on Fire” landed at #3 on #1. Their debut The Royal EP also saw them receive coverage from Rolling Stone, Billboard, FILTER Magazine, Alternative Addiction!, and more. Meanwhile, Examiner predicted, “there are big things ahead of this group” and Glamour proclaimed “Gimme Twice” “one of this summer’s big hit songs.”  “On Our Way” became their biggest hit, landing over 25 syncs including Glee, FIFA 14, and more.

Must Listen: Foals – “Mountain At My Gates”

FOALS

Produced by James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence + the Machine), “Mountain At My Gates” builds from the leftfield grooves and angular art-rock that characterized previous Foals’ anthems such as “My Number” and “Miami”. This time, however, the quintet subverts expectations by twisting the track into a frenzied finale with a cacophony of sound.

“I’d recorded the beginning riff on my phone ages ago,” explained vocalist/guitarist Yannis Philippakis in a track-by-track interview with NME.  “At the beginning it had a baggy feel, but became less so with more work. The central image – “I see a mountain at my gates” was from me getting more interested in seeing what would come out lyrically where there wasn’t a pre-conceived idea. Normally I write voraciously in books and journals, then harvest a lot of that for the record. This, though, came out instantaneously in the room.”

Foals’ thrillingly visceral return with title track ‘What Went Down’ earned a flurry of Radio 1 support (Hottest Record in the World, Tune of the Week and Track of the Day) as it accelerated past the million views mark at YouTube. The album is now available to pre-order on digital, CD, CD/DVD and vinyl formats, as well as a limited edition box set, which is available exclusively from Foals’ online store. Fans who pre-order the album will receive instant downloads of “Mountain At My Gates” and “What Went Down”.

As with the rest of the What Went Down album, Foals – completed by Jimmy Smith (guitar/keys), Walter Gervers (bass), Jack Bevan (drums) and Edwin Congreave (keys) – recorded “Mountain At My Gates” at the studio La Fabrique which is located in the same village in the south of France in which Van Gogh was hospitalised after savaging his own ear.

What Went Down is an album that grapples with questions that are a world away from the bland bleatings of homogenised pop: permanence and impermanence; life and death; solitude; vulnerability; intimacy; passion; rage; humanity – weighty issues that make demands of the people creating that music, and of all those who listen to it, too.

Sonically, it’s an album that precariously seesaws between primal aggression and naked vulnerability. It’s an approach that delivers a contrast of muscular shocks with the fiery central riff of “Snake Oil” and the menacing percussive march of “Albatross” set against some of the band’s most openly experimentally moments to date such as cocktail of afrobeat and drum machines that underpins “Night Swimmers” and the stripped-back, vocal-led “Give It All”.

The album closes on an astonishingly beautiful note with “A Knife in the Ocean”, akin to both the calm before the storm, but also the stillness and silence after it has passed.

Foals have released three top ten albums to date: Antidotes (2007, album chart no 3), Total Life Forever (2010, no 8) and Holy Fire (2013, no 2).  2013 was the year that Foals broke through (even though I’ve loved them since 2007). Appearing high up the bill at festivals around the world, Foals became festival headliners in the UK, headlining Bestival, Latitude and Parklife, drawing the biggest crowds of the weekends.  By the end of 2013 Foals had won another slew of awards:  Best Live Act at the Q awards, Best Live Act at The Sun Bizarre awards, Best Single (Inhaler) at the NME awards and a Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize nomination (the band’s second in a row).

“Brick + Mortar’s songs may have a gritty edge to them, but the experimental pop duo of Brandon Asraf and John Tacon’s main goal is to encourage and spread positivity and self-motivation through music.” Pure Volume

“There’s an undeniable energy that charges through New Jersey-based duo Brick+Mortar…”NYLON Magazine

John Tacon and Brandon Asraf have truly been building a movement. Spreading a message of empathy, positivity, and self motivation… The two artists have been playing gritty, bright yet sinister, witty alternative pop for inspired audiences throughout the country. John Tacon started by playing in a few short lived bands. He suggested his friend, Brandon Asraf, pick up an instrument. He chose the bass guitar and it not only offered distraction, it changed the course of his life. While Tacon’s upbringing was reasonably normal, Asraf, on the other hand grew up “like wolves” amid five siblings in a New Jersey household headed by a conman father. Dad’s schemes ultimately tore the family apart. “Mom didn’t take everything that happened the best,” he says. But you can learn more about that in VICE’s article: “My Buddy’s Dad Was a Blood Diamond Smuggler”. Google it.

Asraf and Tacon jammed together for many years instrumentally before deciding to try writing songs. Asraf was initially concerned about his voice, but like with everything else, his confidence grew alongside his mastery. After giving their project its name in 2008, they followed in 2010 with Brick + Mortar’s first EP, 7 Years in the Mystic Room. It captured some buzz and, after lots of touring, the Bangs EP followed in 2013. For the past 2 years, Brick + Mortar have been criss-crossing the continent, playing their energetic anthems of empowerment. The band has given the two best friends an outlet to share their beliefs with the masses. Brandon says, “Music gave me a sense of value. I realized I could tell a story and express myself. It’s positive. I’m meeting these people in the outside world that are making me feel like I can be the part of something positive on Earth, instead of being destined to this scumbag existence.”

Coming from the wrong side of the tracks, Asraf knew what Janis Joplin meant about the freedom of having nothing left to lose. “I was just a poor kid growing up. I didn’t have an identity. I wasn’t really good at anything,” says Asraf. “I didn’t have a fear of failing or of dying or of any of that, because I figure that was just what was going to happen anyway. Because of my life at the time, I just didn’t give a fuck.” The two have started assembling a following of believers. People who can relate to where they are coming from. If the songs weren’t catchy enough, the authenticity of the artists behind the music is relatable on so many levels.

Brick + Mortar is an escape for both the listeners and creators alike. The honesty of songs on Dropped can be heard July 17th. This release is the first time Brick + Mortar are truly free to do things their way. They are taking control of their future, and doing all the things the label would never let them do. They can’t wait for you to hear the new songs, and experience the live shows they will bring to you. Every song on the record will have a music video. They already have released the sleek sci-fi video for “Move To The Ocean” which was directed by Asraf’s brother Corey, and stars his youngest brother, EJ. This communal hand’s on approach is powered by the fans, because it’s all for them. “We are the band that only exists because of you. The Dropped EP is for anyone who ever believed in Brick + Mortar. Thanks for believing in us.”
