Newest Love: Jungle

London-based collective Jungle has revealed they will release their debut album in North America on July 15, 2014 (July 14 UK) on XL Recordings.  Their eponymous album is set to be one of the summer’s most anticipated debut records, building on the success of their singles “Platoon”, “The Heat” and “Busy Earnin'”.  Rolling Stone recently included the group in their “10 New Artists You Need To Know“.

Jungle are based around a core musical duo of lifelong friends known simply as ‘J’ and ‘T’, who expand to a thrilling seven piece live, and make mesmeric, kaleidoscopic modern soul that’s unmistakably born in the UK but has true global appeal (their “Platoon” video has already racked up more than 4 million views). The album was recorded between the band’s own home studio in Shepherds Bush, London and the XL Recordings studio in Ladbroke Grove.

Video: Unicycle Loves You – “Falling Off”

Brooklyn’s Unicycle Loves You is gearing up to release their fourth album The Dead Age on June 10th (pre-order), and now the band has shared a new dark and psychedelic music video for “Falling Off.” The band filmed and produced every aspect of the video, superimposing some of their favorite cult films onto themselves, making for a unique counter-culture experience. In addition, Unicycle Loves You has rolled out the first phase of their summer tour dates (see below), stretching from the East Coast to the Midwest, with more coming soon.

Over the course of their first three records, Unicycle Loves You have transformed from a jangly power pop quintet (Unicycle Loves You) to a post-new wave quartet (Mirror, Mirror), to a garage-psych trio (Failure), into the fourth chapter in the evolution of the band: The Dead Age. Opening with an exhausted woman’s voice gasping “Oh my god!,” The Dead Age builds off of the heavier sound of Failure. Crafted meticulously, often pushing the tonal limits through a massive wall of sound, melodies explode into chaotic free-falls, where screaming guitars and mammoth-sized bass bend at the will of ULY, simultaneously paying homage to Mascis and Beefheart.

Scheduled for release on June 10th, The Dead Age was produced by Jim Carroll & mastered by Shellac’s Bob Weston. If Failure was their mission statement to add a dirty, unpolished edge to pop music, then The Dead Age is the sound of Unicycle Loves You completely dismantling it. Stand out tracks “Face Tattoo,” “Suicide Pizza,” Endless Bummer” and “Falling Off” are a few examples of a band that has fully forged their very own sonic aesthetic.

News From The Griswolds

unnamed

Sydney sweethearts, The Griswoldsjust put the finishing touches on their highly anticipated debut album with Tony Hoffer (M83, Phoenix, Beck). Their first single will be “Beware The Dog.” “This is the first song Dan and I ever wrote together. It’s about losing someone we were really close with to heavy drug use. ‘Beware the Dog’ is about that journey – the good and the bad times,” said Christopher Whitehall.

Last year The Griswolds released their infectious four-song Heart of a Lion EP and upon the release of its first single, “Heart of a Lion,” it was immediately added into high rotation in Australia on triple j radio and was one of the station’s most played tracks of the year. The international airwaves were quick to take notice with the song attracting airplay in over 20 countries worldwide and it also reached #3 on the radio airplay charts in The Netherlands via tastemaker station 3FM and was an iTunes single of the week in the region.

Stateside, the release had critics and fans buzzing alike not only with the songs themselves but with their creative videos which all had noteworthy premieres – “Mississippi” was featured on MTV Buzzworthy and I posted about it HERE; the visualizer for the Magic Man remix of the song premiered on Neon Gold, and “The Courtship of Summer Preasley” premiered with Musically Amusing HERE.

The Griswolds just wrapped a tour in Australia with St. Lucia which had one of Australia’s leading music blogs, Tone Deaf boasting that they, “…put on an incredible support set that could have easily been redefined as a co-headline spot. The quintet oozed tropical flamboyance and Aussie ambience, and brought with them a euphoric lasso that hooked audiences from the get-go…‘Beware Of The Dog’, showcased the band’s impressive harmonies and raw heavy percussion, giving the song an infectious live presence that, in hindsight, rivaled many of the headliner’s moments.”

They also came off some great shows at SXSW to packed houses and rave reviews including making many best of lists such as, The Huffington Post naming them as “30 SXSW Acts About to Break,” The Atlantic “18 Bands to Check Out From South by Southwest 2014,”Buzzfeed “50 Acts You Need To Hear,” AU Review naming the band as “Best Australian Artist at SXSW: The Griswolds” and Reverb naming them in their “The best shows at SXSW 2014” list.

The Griswolds will be playing shows throughout the rest of the year including Bonnaroo and Firefly as well as select dates with Gemini Club.  More dates will be announced soon.

The Griswolds are also currently running a Pledge Music pre-order campaign which gives fans access to exclusive updates and content from the band, plus options for unique merchandise and experiences bundled with an album pre-order.  A portion of the proceeds go to benefit the ASPCA / RSCPA.  Get more information here:http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/thegriswolds

The Griswolds are Christopher Whitehall (Vocals), Daniel Duque-Perez (Guitars), Lachlan West (Keyboard / Percussion) and Tim John (Bass).

Check ‘Em Out: Midnight Faces

image002

Listen: Midnight Faces – “This Time”

The Fire Is Gone is the second album by Los Angeles-based duo Midnight Faces, comprised of vocalist Philip Stancil and composer Matthew Doty of Saxon Shore, the pioneering instrumental post-rock band founded by Doty and Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty.

Scheduled for release on May 13th, the album is the follow-up to 2013’s debut Midnight Faces release Fornication, which despite Doty’s astute reminder that “‘Indie’ and ‘80’s’ are not genres,” reminded folks fondly enough of those sounds to draw the attention of MTV Buzzworthy and MTV Hive along with popular and influential music discovery websites such as Under The RadarMy Old Kentucky BlogEarmilk, and Baeblemusic among others.

To better understand what The Fire Is Gone is, please understand what it isn’t: No fancy producers, no big name special guests, no one wearing robot costumes, no all-analog studio, and no songs recorded live to tape.

“We made this album by ourselves and for ourselves,” Doty says. “We made it in my apartment on a computer one track at a time. If you dig the tunes, cool. If you don’t, that’s cool, too.”  Fair enough, but there’s a damn good chance you’ll be landing in the camp of the former.

Still, Doty asserts, “Just what L.A. needs –another fucking 80’s new wave band, right?” Well, no. But when the songs are as good as what Midnight Faces is cranking out, perhaps the listener should be the ultimate judge of that? In fact, The Fire Is Gone is an even more evolved take on the sound that Doty and Stancil already had pretty damn near perfect.

“We laid the drum and bass line fairly quickly, but were unsure where to go next for a while,” Doty explains of “This Time,” the latest track from The Fire Is Gone recently premiered via The Onion A.V. Club. “And when I say a while, I mean like 30 minutes.  I think we took a break to go watch ‘Shark Tank’ or something.  Uhh, I mean have a beer and a cigarette.  When we came back, Phil started whistling with a bunch of reverb on it.  It just seemed to hit the spot.”

Video: Drive-By Truckers – “Made Up English Oceans”

unnamed (5)

Writing independently, Drive-By Truckers’ Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood penned songs that dovetailed brilliantly with each other on English Oceans, the Athens, Georgia-based band’s 12th release and highest Billboard debut to date at #16.

Hood says, “Every song on this record connects with another song. I noticed Cooley’s got a line in ‘Primer Coat’ about ‘apron strings,’ and I have the exact same image in one of my songs, ‘Hanging On.’ It goes on and on and on like that on this record, and that’s a pretty good sign for things, particularly given how different our temperaments are and our styles of writing are.”

DBT’s ever-keen political edge can also be seen on the release. Cooley’s “Made Up English Oceans” derives from his interest in the career of Lee Atwater, the Republican operative who was active in the Reagan and Bush campaigns of the ‘80s. “He was the guy that Karl Rove and all of the modern dirty tricksters looked to – he was one of the granddaddies of it all. That song is from his point of view, fictionally of course. It’s him making his pitch, telling what he understands about young, Southern men.” Courtesy of GQ, watch HERE as a good girl goes bad with the Bible by her side in the song’s new video, directed by Joshua Black Wilson (The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Willie Nelson).

Cooley and Hood’s brace of character-based songs depict a neatly interlocking gallery of relationships, often in dissolution and discord. Reflecting on the renewed high level of collaboration between the band’s two principals, English Oceans marks an unprecedented event: the recording of a Hood song, “Til He’s Dead or Rises,” with Cooley assuming the lead vocal.

Cooley says, “I remember Patterson was getting frustrated trying to sing it. He was doing fine, but it seemed like there was something he wanted to do that wasn’t coming. I was in the control room thinking, ‘I could probably sing this’ — though it wasn’t like I was saying, ‘Oh, I can sing this a lot better than that.’ I was thinking, ‘This sounds like something I could sing.’ Right after that, he walks into the control room and says, ‘You want to trying singing this? It sounds more like you than me.’ I said, ‘Yeah, I was just thinking that.’”

Looking at the accomplishments of English Oceans from the perspective of DBT’s nearly three-decade history, both Cooley and Hood decline to hedge their bets on the quality of their latest work.

“You’re always hesitant to say, ‘Oh, this is the best record we’ve ever made,’” Cooley says, “because you always want to. And sometimes you say it, and sometimes you’re right, and sometimes you think, ‘Well, maybe I jumped the gun on that a little bit, I got excited.’ But I think this just might be the best record we’ve ever made.”

Hood concurs enthusiastically: “It’s my favorite thing that we’ve ever done. I’m proud of our catalog – we always try to make as good a record as we can make. Sometimes things just work. This time, we made kind of a magical record. I’ve always felt that Decoration Day was our best record, and this is the first one that I think is a better record than that was. Every piece of the puzzle fit.”

To personally give witness to Drive-By Truckers best album yet, head below to check out their upcoming May tour dates with a retooled lineup which boasts a leaner and even more powerful live show. In addition to Cooley and Hood, Brad Morgan is on drums, Jay Gonzalez is on keys and guitars and Matt Patton from The Dexateens rounds out the current line-up on the bass.

Video: tUnE-yArDs – “Water Fountain”

unnamed (1)

Nikki Nack – the new album from tUnE-yArDs – is out in just a few days!

Combining a plethora of different visual elements, from animation to puppetry, dancing, and even a science lesson, “Water Fountain” is a video every bit as colorful as tUnE-yArDs’ music.

Directed by Joel Kefali, he writes that “when Merril approached me wanting to make a video with a PeeWee’s Playhouse vibe I had to say yes. I’d had plenty of ideas for a kid’s show that had been waiting to see the light of day. I didn’t want to make a straight homage piece; there are moments of nostalgia in there but the video is our own modern, manic, collage of a kids show. Like many great kids shows I wanted to cram in as many ideas as possible and sneak in the occasional wink to the art world, contemporary and historic. The musical dynamic of ‘Water Fountain’ lends itself perfectly to the concept and I think this video is best viewed while consuming a big bowl of cereal. Then again, what isn’t?”

Nikki Nack will be released by 4AD on May 6th.

Video: Lewis Watson – “Stay”

Lewis Watson is set to release his long-awaited debut album The Morning in the US on June 17th. Demonstrating Lewis’ powers as a songwriter, The Morning combines fully-realised reworkings of select songs from his early EPs with plethora of new material – including instant grat track “Halo,” “Stay” and much more. These new songs take Lewis’ stripped-back, guitar-and-voice roots to a new level of richer, more textured soundscapes.

In 2012, Lewis Watson self-released his debut EP It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It BTW after establishing a devoted online fan-base. It topped the iTunes singer-songwriter chart on the first day of release, outselling the likes of Adele, Madonna and Ed Sheeran in the process, and landed the then nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter a deal with Warner Bros. Records.

In addition to critical acclaim, all five of his EPs to date have hit the Top 10 at iTunes, each building upon the sales of the previous release. Meanwhile, his online following is phenomenal: 5 million YouTube plays; 100,000 likes at Facebook; 5 million streams at Spotify; and 70,000 Twitter followers.

Fans who purchase The Morning iTunes pre-order, available now, will receive an instant download of new album track “Halo”.

Indie rock stalwarts Camper Van Beethoven are back with El Camino Real, the companion studio album and follow up to their highly lauded La Costa Perdida. Whereas La Costa reflected the northern California “back to the country” side of the band with lush and trippy references to Jack Kerouac, Richard Brautigan, The Beach Boys and “Big Sur,” the songs on El Camino Real are firmly rooted in a grittier earth – one that lies beneath the southern half of the state and stretches all the way down to Baja California. Produced by the band and recorded in various studios and living rooms, El Camino Real’s harder sonic edges capture the sounds of an entirely different road trip from Bakersfield through the Inland Empire and beyond the border to Mexico. The lineup remains Victor Krummenacher, Greg Lisher, David Lowery, Jonathan Segel and Michael Urbano.

Music historians will note that despite the band’s extended residency in Santa Cruz and parts north, Camper Van Beethoven actually formed in Redlands, California—a semi-urban, multi-cultural polyglot landscape populated by a host of characters brought to life by the angular notes and dry observations of El Camino Real. Similarly, the songs “Camp Pendleton,” “Dockweiler Beach,” “I Live in LA” and “Sugartown” evoke a particular view of life in said regions.

Camper Van Beethoven’s El Camino Real will be released on June 3rd via 429 Records.

Download: DWNTWN – “Missing You”

Listen/download: DWNTWN – “Missing You”

“Shimmery, ethereal indie/electro-pop in excelsis.” – The Guardian

“We need all the sunshine we can get right now, and DWNTWN has it in spades.” – USA Today’s Pop Candy

“It is absolutely sublime.” – My Old Kentucky Blog

“…catchy melancholy pop with twinkling electronics that could be sung by thousands during a festival twilight in the near future.” – RCRD LBL

“…devastatingly affecting indie-pop.” – Buzzbands LA
“We don’t know much about L.A. electro-pop duo DWNTWN besides the fact that we want to hear a lot more music from them.” – NYLON Magazine

“Easing tension with mellow and drawn-out soundscapes” – Earmilk

DWNTWN brings their sweeping wall of sound, complete with synths, banjos, handclaps, and singer Jamie Leffler’s ethereal voice.

“This is a song for my grandpa who passed away last year. He was the most loving man and I miss him everyday, but writing this song helped me come to terms with losing him. I hope it can relate to anyone who has lost someone special”, says Leffler.

People Magazine just featured the band’s “Til Tomorrow” (which I LOVE — and posted here) as one of ten songs to soundtrack the desert road trip to Coachella, and also Blackbird Blackbird got a goose bump inducing remix from DWNTWN’s Robert Cepeda for his new single “There is Nowhere”, which premiered on Earmilk.  Haunting guitar and sparse drum kicks build to a harmonious vocal crescendo of Blackbird Blackbird’s Mikey Maramag and DWNTWN’s Jamie Leffler.

“Missing You” will be released on DWNTWN’s self-titled EP, dropping April 29th on Jullian Records.
