Newest Love: SuperHeavy

SuperHeavy,  consisting of Damien Marley, Dave Stewart, Mick Jagger, A.R. Rahman and Joss Stone, has released the highly anticipated self-titeld album for pre-order via iTunes.

Mick Jagger has teamed up with Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart, soul singer Joss Stone, Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack composer A.R.Rahman and reggae star Damian Marley to form a band cooperative project called SuperHeavy. This diverse and eclectic line up who share eleven Grammy Awards between them, have been recording together in various studios around the world, with the majority of the tracks on the project laid down over three weeks in Los Angeles earlier this year.

It’s little wonder that Stewart refers to SuperHeavy as, “A mad alchemist type experiment”. Fusing the talents of one of the greatest front-men of all time, a two time Academy award winning Indian composer, a soul vocal prodigy, a three time Grammy winning reggae star, and one of the most sought after producers in the world, you would expect the explosive results to defy categorisation.

SuperHeavy came together after Jagger and Stewart considered what a band comprising of musicians from different genres would sound like. Jagger explains, “Dave really wanted to make a record with a different group of musicians, in other words, with different backgrounds of music. Instead of everyone being a rock musician, or a blues musician, or some other genre, he wanted to get as many genres together that would fit. I said it sounds like a good idea, I never thought it would actually happen.”

Despite their disparate backgrounds, they instantly connected and hit the ground running, writing twenty-two songs in the first six days. Stone was thrilled with the results, “That’s what you need, all these opinionated people who have been brilliant in their own field, shove them together and see what comes out. It’s really unexpected, it’s mind blowing,” she enthuses.

However, despite the free flow of creative juices and the easy rapport they established, getting the band together in one place became very difficult, as Stewart explains, “It’s the most complicated record ever made. Imagine, some of it’s recorded in LA, some of it’s recorded in the South of France, some of it’s recorded off the coast of Cyprus, some of it’s recorded in Turkey, some of it’s recorded in Miami, some of it’s recorded in the Caribbean, and some of it’s recorded in Chennai, in India.”

The project needed a name. Marley had been riffing the term “SuperHeavy”, inspired by Muhammad Ali being the super heavy weight champion of the world and the phrase became the band’s catchphrase, “It was Mick who said, ‘Why don’t we call it SuperHeavy?”, recalls Stewart, “We all thought about it for ages and then it sort of stuck.”

Back to that alchemical experiment, Jagger, Stewart, Marley, Rahman and Stone appear to have created a new genre. It’s a new kind of music, it’s a new genre, one that cannot be placed” says Stone. Yet, Jagger is keen to point out the music is accessible, “It’s very approachable. If you’re a Rolling Stones fan there’s definitely stuff you can relate to.”

As far as the future of SuperHeavy goes, “We haven’t planned to do a tour or anything, but if people really like it maybe we will. We’d love to get out and play some of it live,” says Jagger humbly. “As soon as we started playing together in the studio it gelled, and all these different styles didn’t seem to be a problem to make them fit together… I hope people will like it….”

I know I like what I’ve heard so far…and can’t wait to hear the rest! The band’s self-titled album will be in stores September 20, 2011.

Newest Love (+ free download): Pikachunes

The recording of New Zealander Miles McDougall’s debut Pikachunes album came about after he fractured his ulna while skateboarding, an injury that required reconstructive surgery. At the time, McDougall was majoring in Jazz performance on drums and the injury left him unable to play. Instead, he created Pikachunes, a first person account of the turmoil of moving to a new city to build a name as a musician. “All you have to do is write a bass line and then everybody wants to know your name,” McDougall sings in the single “Nervous,” sounding like he may know plenty about the US music scene already.

Producing and performing pulsing electro beats that are both groovy and awash with heavy club thuggery, Pikachunes makes a splash with songs that make you move, think and laugh with their stinging social commentary.

The self-titled debut album is available today from Lil’ Chief Records. Click here to preview and buy Pikachunes.

New Music: Caveman

After revealing tracks with Fader and Pitchfork, the rising New York band Caveman exclusively premiered two new tracks with Stereogum and Nylon MagazineStereogum calls Caveman’s “Decide”  “breezy, infectious folk-pop / Heavy Rotation” and Nylon Magazine described the luscious “Easy Water” as follows: “newcomers Caveman, the Brooklyn band that’s gaining massive buzz despite the fact that the group is only a little more than a year old. With lullaby vocals and woozy melodies.”

  • Download “Decide” HERE
  • Download “Easy Water” HERE

Mark your calendars for more new track premieres: “A Country’s King of Dreams”via MTV Hive on 8/31 and “My Room” via Rolling Stone on 9/5.

Opening with “A Country’s King of Dreams,” the band explores honey-sweet, country-tinged vocal melodies over tribal drumming. “My Time” is a slow-building pop gem, with lead singer Matthew Iwanusa’s vocals weaving in and out of band’s backing vocals. Caveman’s lush four-part harmonies, spaced-out guitars, and inventive percussion come together perfectly on the tracks “Easy Water” and “My Room.”

The band puts on a must-see live show; as you can read in this amazing Consequence of Sound live review HERE from the Chicago show last week (and I will be going to see on Thursday 9/1). Currently on tour with The War on Drugs, they’ll be back in New York for their digital album release show at the Mercury Lounge on Thursday, September 15th.

In honor of the New York five-piece’s debut release, Pitchfork revealed another stand out track from Caveman’s debut CoCo Beware “Thankful” HERE. The band has already made “Old Friend” (my favorite!) available as a free download, premiering the track with Fader Magazine. Click HERE to hear the track.

Caveman is:
Matthew Iwanusa (lead vocals, guitar, drums)
Jimmy “Cobra” Carbonetti (guitar)
Stefan Marolachakis (drums, vocals)
Sam Hopkins (synthesizer, vocals)
Jeff Berrall (bass, vocals)

“Our Idiot Brother” stars Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, T.J. Miller and Shirley Knight.  Every family has one: the sibling with a peculiar knack for messing things up, despite having nothing but good intentions.  For sisters Liz (Emily Mortimer), Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), that person is their perennially upbeat brother Ned (Paul Rudd), a biodynamic farmer whose willingness to rely on the honesty of mankind is a less-than-optimum strategy for a tidy, trouble-free existence.  Ned may be utterly lacking in common sense, but he is their brother and so, after his girlfriend dumps him and boots him off the farm, his sisters once again come to his rescue. Deschanel who is also a successful musician, noted, “Jesse Peretz has amazing taste in music and the soundtrack he assembled for “Our Idiot Brother” is stellar; with great original music as well as classics, it’s a wonderful mix to behold.”

As Liz, Miranda and Natalie each take a turn at housing Ned, his natural guilelessness proves to be a very unnatural fit with their daily lives.  As their worlds are turned upside-down, they fix their blame on Ned, who always seems to be in the middle of every misunderstanding, forever saying or doing the exact wrong thing at the exact wrong time.  Ultimately, it will fall to Ned to say and do something that will shake his siblings out of their assumptions – and cause them to realize that maybe their brother, with his genius for enjoying life and appreciating those he loves, isn’t such an idiot after all.

The Our Idiot Brother soundtrack album’s 16 tracks are a reflection of the film’s mirthful quirkiness.  The score was written by film composer, musician and author Nathan Larson (Boys Don’t Cry, The Woodsman and The Messenger) and Fruit Bats’ founder Eric D. Johnson (who also scored 2010’s Ceremony).  Larson added “Mellotron Melody” to the lineup while Johnson provided a counter-intuitively cool version of “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.” The sentimental evergreen that got Tony Orlando and Dawn‘s career off and running in the 1970s was a “put” from director Jesse Peretz who explained, “Arrow, my three year old daughter, loved ‘Tie A Yellow Ribbon’ so much that she would make me play it for her on the way to school every day.  As a consequence, the song was totally ingrained in my head as we worked on the music for the film.  Eric cut a new version of the song that we played for Arrow who gave it a big ‘thumbs-up.’  It worked out perfectly for the film; I think we might have a budding little music supervisor on our hands.”

New Video: VHS or Beta – “Breaking Bones”

VHS or Beta’s upcoming album, Diamonds & Death, is a journey full of thrilling moments and unexpected turns. The album’s electronic foundation is a byproduct of the many nights VHS OR BETA DJs have manned the decks and remixes they have done in the last few years. The self-produced album travels spectacular heights to gut-wrenching plunges and is an emotional rollercoaster. The songs unfold and mutate in unpredictable ways that will transfix dance floors and bedrooms alike. Diamonds & Death will be released September 27 on Krian Music Group/Chromosome Records.

The “Breaking Bones” MP3 was released a few weeks ago and now the band has revealed the stylishly colorful and slightly risqué new video for the track. With a skittering beat, keyboards stabs and a transfixing vocal melody, “Breaking Bones” immediately submerges you into the album and explodes into a guitar-fueled chorus.

Title track “Diamonds & Death” transforms from a minimal synth track into a dance floor behemoth. “I Found a Reason” is a pulsating summer anthem with a soaring refrain built on a foundation of rubbery bass, swooning synth and housey piano chords. Diamonds & Death is an unpredictable journey full of breathtaking epic song-scapes.

The two main creative engines behind VHS OR BETA’s decade-long career, Craig Pfunder and Mark Palgy, relocated to Brooklyn from Louisville over the last two years. Be sure to catch them live on a national tour with Ladytron if you’re able!

Free Download: The War on Drugs – “Come to the City”

Just a few days ago, I posted the video for The War on Drugs song “Baby Missiles.” Now I’d like to share with you album centerpiece “Come to the City,” where Adam Granduciel takes things to the next level. “All roads lead to me/I’ve been moving/I’ve been drifting,” Granduciel howls and moans over its constant beat, and his epic phased Firebird guitars. It’s a modern American outsider miracle; a straight up jam – inducing fist pumps and goose bumps.
