hunter & wolfe: Late Then Never EP

Today, Brooklyn-based rock duo hunter & wolfe share their new EP, Late Then Never, the band’s first offering since their 2014 full-length LP, Days And WorksImpose Magazine is currently streaming the record in advance of the official release this Friday. They praised the EP, stating, “This record packs a lot into 5 songs — themes range from tongue-in-cheek wit, regret, suffering from loss, love and self-doubt.” Check out three of those tracks below.

Late Then Never incorporates their signature singer-songwriter feel with an indie rock flare and a heavy dose of wordplay; it’s about struggling to find meaning amidst the noise of modernity. Late Then Never features Doug Schadt (producer/engineer), Harper James (engineer), and Joe Lambert (mastering). The record will be available and will be distributed digitally by Spotify, Bandcamp, iTunes, and Google Play.

hunter & wolfe is comprised of Michael Maffei (vocals, guitar, piano), and Sundeep Kapur (guitar). Kapur and Maffei formed hunter & wolfe when visiting Chicago in 2011. In a (misguided) attempt to impress people, they jokingly introduced themselves as attorneys working at a law firm called “hunter & wolfe.” Somehow, the pair ended up performing at a house party that night and decided to keep the name. hunter & wolfe draw inspiration from Radiohead, Elliott Smith, and Arcade Fire.

Obsessed: Tourist’s Newest EP, Wash

UK-based producer and composer Tourist has released his latest Wash EP, as well as the visuals for featured track “Sleepwalking” (feat. Swim Mountain & Esther Joy). Last month Tourist revealed a collection of “We Stayed Up All Night” remixes, including versions from Tom Demac and Matthew Dear on Beatport here, offering new takes on his EP’s lead single. Tourist recently wrapped a string of US tour dates supporting Bonobo and Bob Moses, his first shows in the states since his stellar Coachella performance earlier this year.

The GRAMMY-winning songwriter and electronic musician William Phillips aka Tourist had this to say:

With this new music I wanted to make something that was more reflective of who I am now and how my life has changed over the past year. I moved out of my windowless studio and started writing from home again. I think subconsciously I’ve started writing more joyous, colorful music and I’ve loved being more collaborative once again. These tracks are my favorite music I’ve produced so far, Tourist will always change with each release and I’ve loved pushing the sound into a new place.

Tourist makes yearning, bittersweet dance tracks. He’s considered an “artist’s artist”, with fans such as Flume and Porter Robinson supporting his releases. After the self-titled debut EP (2012), Tonight EP (2013), and Patterns EP (2014) featuring guest appearances by Lianne La Havas and Will Heard, as well as high-profile remixes for Chvrches, Haim, Christine and the Queens under his belt, Tourist went on to win the GRAMMY for co-writing the Sam Smith hit “Stay With Me”, and he released his debut album U (2016) to critical acclaim and support from outlets like Vice, Billboard and Rolling Stone Australia.

The single, “Run” landed with #1 spots on BBC Radio 1 dance charts and Hype Machine. This was soon followed by a string of sold-out shows as a live favorite across the United States, Europe and Australia, including major festival appearances at Glastonbury, Coachella (twice) and Bestival.

New EP from Metacara Released Today

Kyla Rae and Vince Nania are Pittsburgh based duo Metacara and today they’ve released their 2nd EP, Car Talks. I can’t really nail down a genre for them because they incorporate many. But, if you’re a fan of Phantogram, Purity Ring, and Wolf Alice (I’m thinking the Blush EP), you will definitely enjoy Metacara. In comparison to their first release in 2015, Stone Love, they feel like Car Talks is more mature. The name of the band itself means, “Many Faces,” which is super cool and appropriate for a group that feels their music is growing as they grow themselves.

When I hung out with Kyla and Vince recently, they told me this EP was inspired by the kinds of talks that you have in the car. You know, like when you’re going on a road trip — you’re in the car for a long period of time, why not talk about something deep that’s been on your mind? And bonus: your travel mate can’t escape you, mwaahahaha.

Check out the video for one of the new tracks, “Pilsen” below:

After you’ve watched that, check out the rest of the EP below via Soundcloud:

When you listen to the title track, make sure you pay attention at the 1:48 mark where the song changes it up a little bit. I love when one song almost sounds like two different songs AND IT WORKS. That’s what happens here. Magical.

“Over the Edge” has a little bit of a darker feel, which I especially appreciate at this time of year. The air is crisp and fall has arrived, Halloween is coming, and I usually feel a teeny bit bitter that the bitter, cold weather is approaching. Sometimes that’s what puts me “over the edge,” not sure about you. Juuuuuuust kidding. Sort of. Anyway, all of the tracks flow very nicely with each other and the EP ends with “Ceilings.” At 1:38, this song brings another beat that I’ve fallen in love with. The sound is blues-y and adds another level of anticipation followed by a rock vibe that carries out the rest of the song. After checking out Car Talks, you’ll see what I mean about nailing down a genre. Maybe I’ll make one up just for them.

The Car Talks EP is available on all major music platforms, so go grab it on whichever one strikes your fancy!

AND if you’re in the Pittsburgh area this Saturday, go check them out for their release party at James Street Gastropub!

LONER has proven one of the year’s most significant debuts, highlighted of course by MISSIO’s breakthrough single, “Middle Fingers,” available now at all DSPs and streaming services. Released at the top of 2017, “Middle Fingers” quickly blew up at SiriusXM’s Alt Nation where it ascended to #1 in the influential “Alt-18 Countdown” before ultimately reaching the top 10 on Billboard‘s “Alternative Songs” chart as well as the top 20 across Billboard‘s “Mainstream Rock Songs,” “Hot Rock Songs,” and “Rock Airplay” charts. “Middle Fingers” is joined an equally popular companion video, now boasting nearly 5 million individual views via YouTube alone.

LONER – which also features such dynamic tracks as “Everybody Gets High” and ” KDV (Ft. SHUG),” – has drawn critical acclaim to match its popular success. “Loaded with bruising bass, icy synths and dark imagery,” raved Rolling Stone, “LONER is an exploration of (vocalist-producer Matthew) Brue’s winding road to sobriety.” “LONER implies a sense of woke with every song,” declared Earbuddy. “Through the power of music, good will prevail.”

MISSIO was founded in 2014 as a new sonic outlet for Colorado-born musician Matthew Brue and Houston, TX native David Butler, the two musicians teaming up to create something unlike anything either had done before. The duo’s widescreen amalgam of inventive production technique, lyrical wit, and endlessly insistent pop hooks instantly proved a sensation with “I Don’t Even Care About You” – featured on 2015’s debut   – rising to #7 on Spotify’s “Viral 50-Global” chart after first appearing on the automated “Fresh Finds” playlist.

The MISSIO EP was followed by “Can I Exist,” featured in a truly extraordinary companion video that earned such prizes as “Best Video” at 2016’s Austin Music Video Festival and the “Audience Award” at 2016’s New Orleans Film Festival. MISSIO’s remarkably cinematic sonic approach also earned them placement on a variety of soundtracks, including MTV’s Scream and Finding Carter, Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club, and Victoria’s Secret’s short film (and biggest lingerie shoot in history), Victoria’s Secret Holiday 2016: A Very Private Affair.

More than simply a studio project from the very start, MISSIO made a number of live appearances following their inception, including a much-discussed debut at 2015’s South By Southwest (SXSW). The duo followed up with a series of national treks, among them K. Flay’s sold-out “Crush Me Tour.”

Newest Love: Motherfolk

Cincinnati’s alt-folk favorites Motherfolk have just announced that they will be re-releasing their sophomore album Fold, clocking in with four new tracks, unreleased videos, and behind-the-scenes photos. Describing their sound as “indie rock with a twinge of modern folk”, Fold ranges from introspective jaunts to anthemic rock’n’roll. With tireless touring and energetic live shows that draw in the audience, Motherfolk has established themselves as one of the Midwest’s most exciting upcoming acts. Today, the band is also debuting the visuals for “Ryder Robinson”. The deluxe edition of Fold will be available October 13, right before a string of tour dates with Sherwood (info below).

Preorder Fold (Deluxe Edition) via Pledge Music

In a contemporary independent music scene inundated with up and coming bands, it takes a unique outfit to break through that noise. A truly exceptional group must exhibit authenticity, raw talent, and electrifying chemistry. This, of course, means there are very few of them. Motherfolk, formed in 2013, is certainly one of those most unique and dynamic acts.

Motherfolk began as a collaborative effort between Nathan Dickerson and Bobby Paver, two college friends with a penchant for writing songs with one another. In the first year of the project, the two songwriters made frequent trips to Nashville to record their first endeavor. In 2014, their eponymous debut album showcased the duo’s musical prowess through a genre-bending collection of elegantly crafted songs.

Since then, Joel Call, Ethan Wescott, Karlie Dickerson, and Clayton Allender have joined Motherfolk’s ranks, and the band has made a name for themselves touring all across the nation. The outfit’s high-energy live performances have won over audiences from coast to coast, and their infectious musical persona has become one of the most exciting rising success stories in the indie scene.

In 2016, Motherfolk released their highly anticipated sophomore effort, Fold. Clocking in with eleven compelling tracks, the album further defines the band as an act that effortlessly melds a slew of influences together to manifest their sound into a splendidly cohesive, original pursuit. From surreal, introspective jaunts to foot-stomping, anthemic rock and roll, Fold stands tall as one of the most exciting records of 2016.

Building on the strength of the original release, Motherfolk will release a deluxe edition of Fold this October. With five unreleased tracks, three new music videos, and exclusive behind-the-scenes photos, fans can get a satisfying deeper look into the compelling story of Fold. The band will continue their extensive touring throughout the remainder of 2017, building momentum for what’s to come, and they’re inviting all of their fans, old and new, along for the ride.

Tracklist:

Said The Whale – “Nothing Makes Me Happy”

“Though fewer in number, the pulse between the remaining members has grown louder and more confident than ever before.” – NYLON

“Bursts of electronic bass compliment bright synths and bittersweet vocals” – Consequence of Sound

“An explosive synth-backed outpouring” – Noisey

On the heels of their acclaimed LP As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide and new single “Nothing Makes Me Happy”, Vancouver trio Said The Whale have announced a string of US tour dates. The chart-topping, JUNO Award-winning outfit will be taking their dynamic live show down the west coast in support of their fifth studio album – released earlier this year. Previously operating as a five-piece, the current trio has created their most collaborative, focused record to date. Earlier releases highlighted the contrast between the two founders’ eclectic rock influences and salt-of-the-earth folksiness. Here their styles become one, which makes for their most captivating live performances yet.

A decade since the band’s formation, Said The Whale have now taken the project back to its freeform roots while simultaneously venturing forward into uncharted art-pop territory. Despite the new album’s many adventurous sonic forays, it remains true to the spirit of their classic work. At its core, As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide is a singer-songwriter record, guided by introspective lyrics and alchemical group harmonies from Ben, Tyler, and Jaycelyn.
After so much change and uncertainty in recent years, Said The Whale has emerged as a unified force. They’ve evolved, but the DNA is the same, and the group’s musical partnership is more fruitful than ever.

Tour Dates:

October 12 – Seattle, WA at Tractor Tavern

October 16 – San Francisco, CA at Cafe du Nord

October 17 – Los Angeles, CA at Bootleg Theatre

October 18 – San Diego, CA at Space

October 22 – Eugene, OR at WOW Hall

October 23 – Portland, OR at Lola’s Room

NVDES – The La NVDITÉ Vol. 1 EP

The La NVDITÉ Vol. 1 EP is an intriguing introduction to the laptop-punk of de-facto frontman Josh Ocean, brimming with his signature frenetic guitars and honing his prowess for crafting compulsive summery jams. NVDES is currently on a national tour as lead support for Grammy-winning producer RAC and will kick off a co-headline tour with Pierce Fulton this fall. NVDES has garnered over 10 million streams across platforms, charted on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart, and received acclaim from the likes of FADER, NYLON, and more.

The last component of the visual EP is the video for “May and June,” which was directed by artists Jenna Josepher and Giulia Marsico. While their personal styles could be considered opposites, with Jenna’s affinity for inanity and pattern and Giulia’s exploration of sexuality and the human figure, their interests in analogy and absurdity unifies the series.

NVDES has garnered over 10 million streams across platforms, charted on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart, and received acclaim from the likes of FADER, NYLON, and more. Keep an eye out for the release of another EP later this year, stay tuned for more and be sure to catch his kinetic live energy in a city near you.

Black Kids New Album Rookie Out Now

Black Kids are finally back, and their new album, Rookie is out. The record, their first release since their 2008 debut album Partie Traumatic, was recorded and co-produced by Andy LeMaster at Chase Park Transduction.

Black Kids are now on their US tour — check out the dates and cities below.

BLACK KIDS TOUR DATES

9/29 – San Diego, CA @ Casbah
10/22 – Washington, DC – DC9
10/23 – Brooklyn, NY – Baby’s All Right
10/24 – Philadelphia, PA – Boot & Saddle
10/26 – Cambridge, MA – Sonia
10/28 – South Burlington, VT – Showcase Lounge
10/29 – Montreal, Canada – Petit Campus
10/30 – Toronto, Canada – The Garrison

Why did it take the band ten years to record a new album, you ask???
“Much like Odysseus and Co., on our journey to make the ‘difficult second album,’ shit got rough,” singer Reggie Youngblood says. “A few of us heeded the siren call of ‘side projects.’ Tumultuous relationships and periods of Imposter Syndrome also impeded progress. Worst of all, I couldn’t write a chorus. And for a band that worships The Chorus, this was problematic.”

After touring exhaustively in support of Partie Traumatic, Youngblood and his bandmates — bassist Owen Cohen and keyboardists/vocalists Ali Youngblood and Dawn Watley — resettled around the U.S., in Brooklyn, Portland, and Athens, Georgia. Reggie started a power-pop group called Blunt Bangs. Owen released records on Kill Rock Stars under the moniker Gospel Music. Ali and Dawn sang and played and crafted. In late 2015, the four convened in Athens to make “Obligatory Drugs”.

Rookie is more lyrically earnest than its predecessor, and Youngblood notes that the “bratty-ness” is toned down — “but just a lil’ bit,” he says. “Yeah, the themes from our debut are still firmly in place on our sophomore: I love you, but you don’t love me; you love me, but I don’t love you; you’re mean, I’m mean—shall we dance?” Ugh, FINE.

Andrew W.K Tour Dates

Party God Andrew W.K. is thrilled to announce his first new full-length album in over a decade. The LP showcases Andrew’s signature style of blasting triumphant rock music, with an ever more epic expanse of energizing emotional ecstasy. “I’m going for the sound of pure, unadulterated power; every emotion, every thought, every experience, every sensation, every fear, every joy, every clarity, every confusion, every up, every down… all extruded and concentrated into one thick syrup of super life-force feeling, and then psychically amplified by the celebratory spirit of glorious partying,” explains Andrew. The new release is out March 2, 2018 via Sony Music worldwide.

Andrew W.K. has officially began his first full-band concert outing in five years with “The Party Never Dies Tour“. Andrew brings his party-centric positivity across America and the previously announced UK tour dates are now moving from November to April, 2018. All tickets bought for the November tour will still be honored at the new dates, or can be refunded at the point of purchase. A full list of all dates can be found below.

A one-man music machine possessed by a single-minded, monomaniacal focus on euphoric joy, Andrew lives to spread a singular message: That to party is to exist, and to exist is to party. Andrew continues to passionately deliver his extremely high-energy brand of uplifting entertainment, with an unrelenting commitment to continuing the mission he first embarked upon in 2001, with the release of his debut single and signature tune “Party Hard”, and has never swerved from since. Despite taking on a dizzying array of additional roles that took him into virgin territory for a rock ‘n’ roll musician (ie: advice columnist for the Village Voice and Vice, host of a Cartoon Network kid’s game show, lecturer at Yale, Harvard, Carnegie Mellon and the UK’s Oxford University), Andrew has always remained true to his positive-partying cause. It’s safe to say, Andrew’s hard-partying spirit is showing no signs of softening.
