Albert Hammond Jr. – New Song + Tour Dates

AHJ

Listen: Albert Hammond Jr. – “Born Slippy”

Today, Albert Hammond Jr. is pleased to share plans to release his third solo album, and first in five years, entitled Momentary Masters. The album’s name derives from a phrase in astronomer Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space – a notion that underscores the truism that every triumph is fleeting.

“I feel like the best songs I’ve written, as soon as I was done, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I did it!’ But in that split second that it comes, that feeling goes,” Hammond Jr. explains. “It’s the same thing when you find complete happiness, you find this complete low. I feel like that’s what being creative is: It’s you bouncing with emotion and what you capture in those bounces. Accept where you are and use it.” And Albert has done just that. In a recent interview with Paper Mag, Hammond Jr. discusses his new domesticity and it’s influence on his third record. “He’s cleaned up, gotten hitched, and moved from the city to upstate New York, but hasn’t lost the ability to create soaring rock riffs and catchy hooks.”

Due to drop on July 31st in the US via Vagrant/BMG, Momentary Masters serves as a follow up to 2006’s Yours To Keep and 2008’s ¿Cómo Te Llama?  “We’re huge fans of Albert Hammond Jr.’s and are excited to be working with him on his best effort yet,” says Jon Cohen EVP of Recorded Music for Vagrant/BMG.

Recorded in Hammond Jr.’s home in upstate New York in a converted barn he calls One Way Studios, Albert created Momentary Masters alongside guitarist Hammarsing Kharhmar (Mon Khmer), guitarist Mikey Hart (Bleachers), bassist Jordan Brooks, and drummer Jeremy Gustin (Delicate Steve, Marc Ribot). The sessions were extremely relaxed which encouraged space for creativity and collaboration. The result offers a new kind of dynamism: you can hear it in “Power Hungry,” with its Morricone-esque grooves and a Mellotron manipulated to sound like violins; or in the aggressive stomp and anxiety-inducing guitars of “Caught By My Shadow.” Even on “Side Boob” – titled so because, hey, why not celebrate a good thing? – there’s a jittery energy that leaves the listener excited.

Momentary Masters is a record that reflects on missed opportunities, choices made, wasted time, and paths not chosen. He calls it “a love letter to my past self.” The music might be largely buoyant-spry, breezy guitar lines locking together and dancing apart – but melancholy frequently seeps into even the sunniest of toplines. It’s a record of acceptance, too. Tucked in the songs is an exploration of the reconciliation of two halves: the best self that you present to others, and the self that slips through and lies exposed when your guard drops.

Albert Hammond Jr. will be on tour in North America from the beginning of September until the beginning of November. All dates (except fests) are on pre-sale beginning today directly via Albert’s website.  A full list can be found below.

Surfer Blood Tour & Benefit Concert For Thomas Fekete

SB

Today Surfer Blood reveal its full national headline tour in support of 1000 Palms, the band’s third full-length and first release with acclaimed indie imprint Joyful Noise out May 12th. In addition to the upcoming 30+ date tour (listed in full below) the band also announces details of a NYC benefit show for guitarist Thomas Feteke’s cancer treatment May 12th at Bowery Ballroom (album release day).

Surfer Blood have organized a benefit concert for their guitarist Thomas Fekete, who is undergoing treatment for cancer.  Friends of Thomas will join Surfer Blood for special performances at Bowery Ballroom (New York) on Tuesday, May 12.  Performers will include Julianna Barwick, Kip Berman (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart), DJ Allen Blickle (Alpaca), Andy Boay (Tonstartssbandht), Cults, POP ETC (acoustic), Marnie Stern & The Figs (w/ members of Les Savy Fav & Girls Against Boys), We Are Scientists. More about Thomas at:  http://www.surferblood.com/thomas

1000 Palms is the band’s return to indie label life after a frustrating experience on Warner Bros. The new record – which features stunners such as “Dorian”, newly-revealed track “Island” and first single “I Can’t Explain” – was written and recorded at home entirely by the band, free of major label tinkering.  The record is Surfer Blood at its most adventurous and carefree.

Today also sees the reveal of the first video from the album for lead single “I Can’t Explain” – which you can check out below. Speaking of the video, Surfer Blood’s John Paul Pitts provided insight on the track and making of:

“The lyrics to “I Can’t Explain” are about a romantic encounter on a New Year’s Eve, so we wanted the video to show the events of a New Year’s party sped up.  We ended up slowing down the song to half-tempo and choreographing all the background action in real time.  This way the movement would appear to be sped up when played back at the normal tempo.  Thankfully a lot of our friends showed up to help, I think a lot of them wanted an opportunity to throw cake at each other in their favorite bar… The video concept was created by our friend Ates Isildak: a local musician, videographer, promoter and clairvoyant.”

New Music From Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will release their second album entitled Chasing Yesterday on March 3rd via Sour Mash Records.

Check out the video for “Ballad Of The Mighty I” right here:

Chasing Yesterday marks a new chapter and sound for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. It’s the first album to be produced as well as written by Noel and features a much broader array of instrumentation than ever before; the result is a rich, expansive and multi-layered record, drawing from a range of disparate influences – from west coast rock to classic rock’n’roll and even some space jazz (!) – whilst still being very obviously a completely cohesive body of work. On producing the album, Noel said:

“It was a major pain in the arse. It’s not that I’ve ever had people telling me what to write or what direction to go in, but managing sessions from one end of the week to the other proved extremely difficult. I had all these people looking at me and saying: ‘right, what are we doing today?’ I was making the whole thing up as I went along.”

Earlier this week Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds announced their return to North America with tour dates kicking off on May 3rd in Toronto and continuing through to their June 7th date at Governor’s Ball in New York City. Tickets for the tour go on sale on Friday, January 23 with an exclusive fan pre-sale on January 21 on Noel’s website.  Tickets can be purchased at HERE where fans will also have the option of adding on the Deluxe CD or Deluxe Vinyl of Chasing Yesterday (outMarch 3) to their purchase which has 4 additional bonus tracks including live favorite, “Freaky Teeth” and a remix of new single “In The Heat Of The Moment.” See below for a complete list of upcoming dates.

Highly Anticipated: New Music From k-os

I’m a fan of k-os since back in 2009, when I heard their album, Yes!

I admit that I wasn’t that big on their 2013 album Black on Blonde, but NOW, they’re back and they’ve unveiled a new song from next year’s highly anticipated LP Can’t Fly Without Gravity.

“Turn Me Loose” is a hard-rocking, four-on-the-floor banger complete with wailing guitars, trippy synths and a message about going out and leaving every worry behind.

The video is set to the backdrop of familiar shots from k-os’ stomping ground, “Walkin’ down Yonge Street on a Friday”, in Toronto.

New Album From Theophilus London!

Theophilus London returns after a two-year hiatus (finally!) with his new album Vibes. To celebrate the release, Theophilus debuts his new video for “Tribe” which will be performed live for the first time tomorrow night on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Executive produced by Kanye West and adorned with cover art by Karl Lagerfeld, Vibes is a collage of “experimental pop, gallant R&B and ’80s new wave inflection[,] most striking in its mix of top-of-the-charts pop intuition, leftfield sensibility, and artful, giddy experimentation” (The FADER).   The title of the album is a reflection of the driftless spirit of collaboration that permeates the record. “The album is called Vibes because everything that happened creatively and spiritually just all vibed together,” explains London. “Everyone who worked on it with me did it on a family level. We all vibed together. You couldn’t even plan it. It was all vibes.”
Yesterday, the New York native stopped by HOT 97 to detail his work with Kanye West, his penchant for big hats, upcoming projects and more with Ebro and Peter Rosenberg.  Check out the interview below:

The 12-song LP took nearly two-years to create following Theophilus’ relocation to the deserts of Palm Springs to join his inspiration and Motown-legend Leon Ware to serve as creative producer on the album.  London had long admired the work of Ware — who has worked with the likes of The Isley Brothers, Ike and Tina, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Minnie Riperton and Maxwell, as well as great moments in soul music such as Marvin Gaye’s classic “I Want You” and Michael Jackson’s first gold record “I Wanna Be Where You Are” — and had even reimagined the album cover of Ware’s eponymous 1982 album for his major label debut album, 2011’s Timez Are Weird These Days.

Theo

Tracklisting for Vibes is as follows:

1. Water Me (feat. Leon Ware)
2. Neu Law
3. Take And Look
4. Can’t Stop My Love (feat. Kanye West)
5. Get Me Right
6. Heartbreaker
7. Do Girls

8. Tribe (feat. Jesse Boykins III)

9. Smoke (Interlude) (feat. Soko)
10. Smoke Dancehall
11. Need Somebody (feat. Leon Ware)
12. Figure It Out (feat. Devonte Hynes)

Theophilus will be spreading the good vibes with his Soho House release party tour:

  • THU Nov 6th – New York, NY w/ Nianga
  • SAT Nov 15th – Chicago, IL w/ Flat White
  • SUN Nov 16th – Toronto, ONT w/ Theophilus London
  • FRI Nov 21st – Miami, FL w/ Juske

Listen: Outasight – “Automatic”

Outasight

Listen: Outasight – “Automatic”

Outasight has released his single of “Automatic”; the 2nd single from the highly  anticipated sophomore album from one of the most versatile artists in hip hop. “Automatic”, has all of the key elements of a dance floor anthem. From the driving beat and hypnotic synths to the funky guitars and Outasight’s one-of-a-kind vocals, “Automatic” is the perfect vessel to introduce Outasight’s return to the world of independent music where he once cut his teeth as one of the most buzzed about artists around.

Outasight is a Yonkers born-and-bred singer/songwriter/rapper whose rise to prominence took him from a star of the New York City mixtape circuit to a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. He’s best known for his single “Tonight Is the Night”, which you might recall from the 2011 Pepsi Commercial featuring Ray Charles, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey. “Tonight Is The Night” was also the main theme to the 2012 NHL All Star game, at which Outasight performed, and the 1000th episode of WWE Monday Night RAW. Capitalizing on the success of “Tonight Is The Night” and the strength of the overall album, Outasight’s major-label debut Nights Like These (Warner Bros. Records) debuted November 23rd, 2012 and peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Heatseeker’s Chart.

With the move back to working as an independent artist, Outasight is making the most of the freedom that comes with being in charge of your own creative destiny. The new batch of Outasight music slated for release is every bit as dynamic as Nights Like These, but with a return to the edge and swagger that made Outasight such a special artist in the first place.

Stay tuned as Outasight unveils more audible treats from his new full-length debuting early next year.
