New Album From Electric Six

Electric Six - Human Zoo

“I find that humans are some of the most pleasant human beings I’ve ever met,” explains frontman Dick Valentine of dance rock band ELECTRIC SIX, in reference to their brand new studio album Human Zoo (Metropolis Records; release date: October 14, 2014). “I suppose we would be best served by caging an average male and average female and then we’d let them mate and then you’d grow the exhibit naturally through coitus.” For a band whose musical track record include a very NSFW video for “Body Shot”, lascivious invites to a “Gay Bar”, starting passionate fires in discos and Taco Bells (“Danger! High Voltage”), and partying with Ronald McDonald “Down At McDonaldz”, an album about the human pursuit to procreate shouldn’t prompt eye-batting. In E6’s world, it’s pretty standard issue. “We’d watch them groom each other and occasionally bicker,” he continues. “On the whole, it should be average people doing average things. There should be no way out.”

Perfectly groomed and parasite-free, Electric Six’s tenth studio album Human Zoo was produced by Johnny Na$hinal, drums were engineered and mixed by Zach Shipps, and it was mastered by Tony Hamera (The Meatmen, The Volebeats). From the Motown-infused “Alone With Your Body” to the triumphant “I’ve Seen Rio In Flames” to the rocker “Karate Lips” – Electric Six return with an album that’s packed with species of all shapes and sounds.

The band is currrently on the road on their Northeast headline tour Some Girls Do It For Love Tour to prepare their fans for the unleashing of their Human Zoo. The 13-day trek kicked off on September 29th at The Loft in Lansing, MI and concludes at Philadelphia’s Milkboy on October 11th.

Electric Six had mainstream success out of the gate with the release of their debut album Fire, which includes their smash singles “Danger! High Voltage” and “Gay Bar”. The album peaked at #5 on the U.S. Dance chart and would later reach gold certification in the UK. The band went on to release eight more albums, a live DVD that was funded via Kickstarter, and continues to tour both nationally and globally. Their tenth studio album Human Zoo is being released on October 14, 2014 via Metropolis Records.

BT & Christian Burns Are: All Hail The Silence + Tour Dates w/ Erasure

"[All Hail the Silence] showcases the synergies between BT's polished production style and Burns' pop-conscious songwriting." -Billboard

“[All Hail the Silence] showcases the synergies between BT’s polished production style and Burns’ pop-conscious songwriting.”
-Billboard

Grammy-nominated producer BT and triple platinum singer-songwriter Christian Burns’ new supergroup, All Hail The Silence, will open for legendary synthpop group Erasure on The Violet Flame North American tour starting 9/26.

“Vince Clarke of Erasure has been a major musical influence on Christian and me,” says BT. “We’re thrilled to introduce All Hail The Silence to Erasure’s audience and can’t wait to join them on tour.”

Long-time friends and artistic collaborators many times over, the announcement joins the unveiling of BT and Christian’s single, “Paralyzed,” which was released on Enhanced Recordings 8/25.

Inspired by 80’s New Wave bands like Depeche Mode, Yaz, and The Human League, All Hail The Silence gives BT and Christian the freedom to showcase a different side of themselves artistically and focus on the live music element of their performances. The songs on their upcoming album are being recorded in a basement in Baltimore using step sequencers and modular/analog synthesizers, straight to tape, without the aid of a computer.
“We’re excited for the fans who have supported us throughout the years to join us on this new journey,” says Christian.

Keep an ear to the ground for new music by All Hail The Silence and check to see if they’ll be coming to a city near you on The Violet Flame Tour starting 9/26.

Newest Love: Ennui – “Feel It”

Ennui

Listen: Ennui – “Feel It”

“With a summer soundtrack like this, we don’t want it to end either.” – The Line of Best Fit

“Light, airy, and a little bit surreal, it’s like a synthpop radio single that’s been put through a taffy pull.” – Noisey

“…captures the lazy, romanticized days of summer with pensive synthesizer loops and heartbeat drums.” – Consequence of Sound

Ennui is the brainchild of renowned Pittsburgh-based musician and producer Jim Doutrich, and has been around in various incarnations since 2004.

The songs that comprise the new album, Telepathic Beat, stand out in style and substance, as roller-beats immersed in a bath of shimmering neo-shoegaze, creating a widescreen backdrop to act as home for brain-embedding melodies and subtly haunting lyrics.

With its sun-drenched feel, the album plays as the soundtrack to a summer spent balancing a narcotic life in clubs, with the possibilities that await when you skip work and head to the beach. It’s destined to be the album to reach for when you don’t want to admit that summer is over.

Telepathic Beat is Ennui’s debut for Mush Records and is nothing short of a rebirth for the band, with mastermind Jim Doutrich honing his infectious brand of synth-pop. The playfully yearning vocals, syncopated synth patterns, and distorted Euro-dance grooves bring to mind both ’80s new wave pop, and the youthful nostalgia of recent releases by glo-fi re-originators.

Live Show Review: Caught a Ghost

Caught a Ghost

Here’s some education on the band Caught a Ghost —

Jesse Nolan describes the name of his band ‘Caught A Ghost’ as referring to the sensation of being filled with the spirit of the past. “It’s an old expression,” he says, “musicians used to say you caught a ghost if you gave a good performance. Like you were possessed.”

As the songwriter, producer and lead singer of the band, Nolan is a devotee of music from bygone eras. But he eagerly expounds upon his affection for vintage soul, delta blues, and 90s rap alike. As Nolan explains, “It’s definitely like being possessed. It’s an obsession. What’s not to be obsessed about? I don’t think it makes me unique, it makes me human.”

What does make Nolan unique is his musical dexterity (he plays all of the instruments on his recordings except horns and some of the drums) combined with the effortlessness with which he seems to pull from many different genres. His music recalls influences from the soul and rock n’ roll traditions (Stax, Motown, Sam Cooke, the Rolling Stones) yet still feel distinctly modern with references to hip-hop and electronic recordings from the 90s to contemporary tracks.

Anyone who has seen Caught a Ghost play live can testify to that notion that in addition to playing high energy shows with as many as nine musicians and various dancers onstage, the group often makes use of projections and performance art as a means of shaking people out of their comfort zones.

When I went to see these guys jam out earlier this month, it turned out to be one of my favorite shows. The energy and the NEED to dance is immense. I liked that the show was a little bit more intimate, too. The venue is a big one, but the show that night was off in a corner of the building by the bar. If you are into Fitz and the Tantrums, I think you’ll highly benefit from checking out Caught a Ghost. If they’re playing in your city, definitely go see them live.

Here’s 2 audio recordings from the show. The quality is bad, this is know; and you have to turn it up to be able to really get into their jam sessions. But, I couldn’t help it! I had to share them with you because the energy was awesome. I never said I was an audio recording expert.

The band’s album Human Nature is out now.

Rock band O.A.R. and singer Phillip Phillips announced their joint summer tour will benefit Habitat for Humanity to support the organization’s mission of providing safe, decent, affordable housing in partnership with low-income families.“Home means everything to us. It’s our DNA. It’s who we are,” said Marc Roberge of O.A.R.  “We had the chance to meet amazing people building Habitat for Humanity homes in LA, pouring love and sweat into the foundation, taking pride in the work they were doing, alongside the Habitat partner family, and it was an honor to be a part of that. Words can’t properly describe the positive swell that brought to our hearts. We hope the donation from our tour will help families, like the ones we met, achieve their dreams of homeownership.”

The 24-city joint tour kicks off in St. Louis today and wraps up in Atlanta on July 26. For every ticket sold, O.A.R. and Phillip Phillips will donate $1 to Habitat. The tour will also host online auctions for a VIP experience in each city, including two premium tickets and an opportunity to meet with the artists. Proceeds from the auctions will go to local Habitat affiliates.

“My team has personally seen the incredible impact Habitat for Humanity can have on lives. We have worked on builds from the Musician’s Village rebuild in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina to local neighborhoods in my community,” said Phillip Phillips. “Habitat’s roots stem from my home state of Georgia but their reach is now worldwide  I am honored to partner with Habitat for Humanity in carrying out their mission – to build homes, communities, and hope.”

The artists will also donate 10 concert tickets to the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in each tour city, for use by Habitat volunteers and staff, as well as Habitat partner homeowner families, who they will meet at each tour stop. Habitat affiliates will be provided with space at each venue to raise awareness about their affordable housing work within their communities.

“O.A.R. and Phillip Phillips share our passion for helping low-income families realize the dream of homeownership,” said Colleen Ridenhour, deputy director of Corporate, Foundation and Institution Relations for Habitat for Humanity International. “We are honored to be recognized during their summer tour and are grateful for their generosity in helping raise funds to create safe, decent, affordable housing.”

Brand New: The Cold And Lovely

unnamed

The Cold and Lovely is the brainchild of indie-rock goddesses, Meghan Toohey (The Weepies, Lenka, Schuyler Fisk) and Nicole Fiorentino (The Smashing Pumpkins,Veruca Salt, Spinnerette). The duo came together to form The Cold And Lovely with a singular sonic vision. The deceivingly moody yet bold new Ellis Bell Deluxe EP will be released on June 17.

Mastered by Dave Cooley (M83, The Silversun Pickups), the release features driving rock tunes that are as heartbreaking as they are anthemic. Upon discussing their influences, Toohey explains, “I dug deep into albums that changed my life, such as My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, PJ Harvey’s entire catalog, and the work of bands like The Cure and U2. But it was Nicole who really helped me shake out the sound and pinpoint what I loved about the guitar tones and production.”

Shoegaze masterpiece “Oh, My Love” is a brooding lovesong strapped with melancholy lyrics and a bass line that commands listeners to move. Infectious title track “Ellis Bell” blends the duo’s slightly distorted vocals over lush instrumentation and dramatic, driving bass. With celestial backing vocals and hard-hitting lyrics, the percussive nature of “Radio” at once lends itself to road trip mixtapes and late-night ragers. “Radio” was released with VICE’s Noisey and you can check it out here.

Listen: The Cold And Lovely – “Radio”

The Cold And Lovely have launched begun a Pledge Music campaign, offering backers behind-the-scenes video snippets as well as a variety of brand new exclusive merchandise. The duo will hit the road this spring with their first ever East Coast run, launching in NYC:

6/10: New York, NY @ Pianos NYC (New Music Seminar)
6/11: Long Branch, NJ @ The Brighton Bar
6/12: Washington, DC @ Black Cat
6/13: Columbus, OH @ Rumba Cafe
6/14: Pittsburgh, PA @ Howlers Coyote Cafe
6/16: Brooklyn, NY @ Glasslands
6/17: Philadelphia, PA @ Kung Fu Necktie

Video: Unicycle Loves You – “Falling Off”

Brooklyn’s Unicycle Loves You is gearing up to release their fourth album The Dead Age on June 10th (pre-order), and now the band has shared a new dark and psychedelic music video for “Falling Off.” The band filmed and produced every aspect of the video, superimposing some of their favorite cult films onto themselves, making for a unique counter-culture experience. In addition, Unicycle Loves You has rolled out the first phase of their summer tour dates (see below), stretching from the East Coast to the Midwest, with more coming soon.

Over the course of their first three records, Unicycle Loves You have transformed from a jangly power pop quintet (Unicycle Loves You) to a post-new wave quartet (Mirror, Mirror), to a garage-psych trio (Failure), into the fourth chapter in the evolution of the band: The Dead Age. Opening with an exhausted woman’s voice gasping “Oh my god!,” The Dead Age builds off of the heavier sound of Failure. Crafted meticulously, often pushing the tonal limits through a massive wall of sound, melodies explode into chaotic free-falls, where screaming guitars and mammoth-sized bass bend at the will of ULY, simultaneously paying homage to Mascis and Beefheart.

Scheduled for release on June 10th, The Dead Age was produced by Jim Carroll & mastered by Shellac’s Bob Weston. If Failure was their mission statement to add a dirty, unpolished edge to pop music, then The Dead Age is the sound of Unicycle Loves You completely dismantling it. Stand out tracks “Face Tattoo,” “Suicide Pizza,” Endless Bummer” and “Falling Off” are a few examples of a band that has fully forged their very own sonic aesthetic.

Free Download: 1,2,3 – “Porch Swing Song”

123

Listen/download: 1,2,3 – “Porch Swing Song”

“…a terrific new band whose 70s-tinged rock, sung with rasping intensity by white soul wonder Nic Snyder,
reminds you of some of the best stuff from the pre-punk era…” – The Guardian

“…hints of that Girls-like ’60s revival, indistinct gestures of surf rock, and touches of grainy, lo-fi acoustics….” Consequence of Sound
Pittsburgh’s genre-defying band 1,2,3 has returned after a two year hiatus, and will be releasing their sophomore double album Big Weather through their newly-founded label American Hermitage on May 27th. The band rolled out “Porch Swing Song” a few days ago, which is the third song they’ve shared from Big Weather (their first two singles “Big Weather Pt. 1” and “Leave Me In The Sky With The Lawnchair” are both still available to stream, see below). Combining classic rock with the best elements of lo-fi soul, punk, garage and even classical music sampling, this is the first new music 1,2,3 has released since their critically-acclaimed debut album New Heaven (2011).

1,2,3 had a turbulent few years since the release of New Heaven. Lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Nicolas Snyder quit the band at the end of 2012, burnt out after touring on the heels of their debut and writing/recording the follow-up for over a year. Several months later, after a few nights of drunken persuasion, he re-convened with the rest of the band and coaxed them back, wanting to finish what they had started. Snyder had been inspired by 70’s dystopian movies, combined with a pattern of strange weather and its resulting destruction (a tornado ripped through his aunt’s house in Pennsylvania… something that shouldn’t happen in PA), along with the tsunami that devastated Japan two weeks later.

The band began recording storms through a screen door in the house they were renting on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, which often flooded, halting production. While recording, the band listened to nothing but local oldies radio stations. Big Weather was recorded entirely on primitive gear, using nothing but creaky old guitars, a bass, and things to bang on. Eventually some classical vinyl sampling was brought in to conjure certain feelings, and add new textures to the short stories and spoken word interludes. The lyrics had all the usual lovelorn, loneliness and death-questioning the band had previously written about, but this time it was more vivid, usually recorded during or after storms.

In the words of Snyder, “it’s more interesting to be lonely in the eye of the hurricane than it is to be in a bedroom. This album is undoubtedly ridden with flaws, but so are its creators, and the circumstances under which it was created… and in that regard, this album feels very special to me.”

The band will be playing their album release show in Pittsburgh on May 30th at Brillobox!

Big Weather Tracklisting:
1. Big Weather Pt. 1
2. Leave Me In The Sky With The Lawnchair
3. Pontoon Song
4. Waiting For The Horsemen
5. Mile High Grass
6. Bus To Babylon
7. Refusal Bop
8. Shapes of Wrath
9. Fear_Pure Elevation
