Grammy-nominated producer BT and triple platinum singer-songwriter Christian Burns’ new supergroup, All Hail The Silence, will open for legendary synthpop group Erasure on The Violet Flame North American tour starting 9/26.

“Vince Clarke of Erasure has been a major musical influence on Christian and me,” says BT. “We’re thrilled to introduce All Hail The Silence to Erasure’s audience and can’t wait to join them on tour.”

Long-time friends and artistic collaborators many times over, the announcement joins the unveiling of BT and Christian’s single, “Paralyzed,” which was released on Enhanced Recordings 8/25.

Inspired by 80’s New Wave bands like Depeche Mode, Yaz, and The Human League, All Hail The Silence gives BT and Christian the freedom to showcase a different side of themselves artistically and focus on the live music element of their performances. The songs on their upcoming album are being recorded in a basement in Baltimore using step sequencers and modular/analog synthesizers, straight to tape, without the aid of a computer.
“We’re excited for the fans who have supported us throughout the years to join us on this new journey,” says Christian.

Keep an ear to the ground for new music by All Hail The Silence and check to see if they’ll be coming to a city near you on The Violet Flame Tour starting 9/26.

Check ‘Em Out: Mortar & Pestle

mp

Oakland, California–based trio Mortar & Pestle is set to release its debut EP on May 7th via the local label Post Primal.  They’re the kind of band that makes the kind of “this reminds me of the summer when…” songs that stick. These are tunes which bring up the feelings that make memories, bridging genres and weaving the past and future into a retrospective ride towards tomorrow. The loss, pain, anger and triumph are heard in Lambert’s soulful voice; a voice that gets right to the heart of the matter, and like a female Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, her pure emotion sits perfectly complimented by her band’s electronics. The arresting first single “U.V.” recently premiered via SPIN.  “‘U.V. is about the effect love has,” says lead singer Janaysa Lambert. “It’s warm at first, and fills us with expansive joy, but not unlike the rays of the sun, it can age us quickly.”

The sounds of a pinball machine in the opening of the tune might say fun, the same way PartyBingo says fun, but make no mistake; the song gives way to a darkness that is real.  Born on the kitchen piano of a studio apartment, days after Lambert and keyboardist Paul Shinichi first met at a mutual friend’s party, the two were joined within the year by drummer Sean Paul Duke. Tragically, the friend who brought them together met with an untimely death shortly after she gave the band its name.

“She wanted to be the one to name us,” says Shinichi. “We were struggling with a name for months, and then she came up with Mortar & Pestle. I think honoring her life is one reason why we are together. This album is really about her.”  The band is also now completing a music video for “U.V.” that is as moving as the song itself.  And, even with the upcoming release of Mortar & Pestle’s debut, the band is already writing its next release.

Free Download: Boots Electric – “I Love You All The Thyme”

After bestowing the videos for “Boots Electric Theme” and “Complexity” upon us, Eagles of Death Metal’s Jesse Hughes is sharing a third track from his solo project, Boots Electric. The track finds Hughes showing a different side from his notorious winking, seductive persona that gets all the girls.  Instead, “I Love You All The Thyme” is a moment of genuine pining for someone he loves that seems to have their eye on someone else.  The song is on Honkey Kong (Dangerbird Records), Hughes’ debut album under the Boots Electric moniker.  The album was produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Depeche Mode, The Kooks) and co-written with legendary keyboardist Money Mark, best known for his many collaborations with the Beastie Boys.

After creating three albums of dirty and danceable garage rock anthems as the frontman of Eagles of Death Metal,  Hughes expands his sonic palette as Boots Electric while continuing to deliver the hooks that he’s known for.  The electronic drums that kick off opening track “Complexity” immediately signal the new direction.  The track is a mix of glam-pop, keyboard-heavy dance grooves, and Hughes’ signature brand of rock ‘n roll grit that drips with swagger.   Elsewhere, he tries on space-funk synths on the track “Boots Electric” and “Trippy Blob” has some of his most absurdist lyrics yet. Hughes continues to show his earnest side on tracks like “No Ffun” is an honest-to-goodness ballad and “Swallowed by the Night” is a soulful slice of honky tonk gold.  Honkey Kong reveals what many already knew – beneath the tongue-in-cheek lyrics and his charismatic strut, Hughes has always been a gifted pop songwriter at heart.  Boots Electric is coming out of the closet.

Newest Love: The Japanese Popstars

New album Controlling Your Allegiance out June 21

The Japanese Popstars – Gary Curran, Declan ‘Decky Hedrock’ McLaughlin and Gareth Donoghue – may have been together for just four years, but they’ve carved out a reputation to rival the biggest names in dance music as a must-see live act and purveyor of raucous, foot-stomping, energetic electronic dance music. In the two years since their debut album We Just Are dropped on Gung-Ho! (UK), they have played major market dates in the U.S. including Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Electric Daisy Carnival in LA, played in Australia, across Europe and, of course Japan – a place that’s especially taken them to their hearts.

The band has also made a name for themselves as sought after remixers, having notched up their own inimitable re-rubs for luminaries such as Beyonce, Depeche Mode, Gorillaz and Kylie Minogue. In keeping with this proud tradition, The Japanese Popstars were also featured in the Tron Remix album, Tron: Legacy Reconfigured with their take on Daft Punk‘s Arena.

But it’s Controlling Your Allegiance, that’s the real leap forward as this is The Japanese Popstars first use of vocalists on an album.  And they didn’t pick just any old session singers either…  Wonder why the track “Take Forever” sounds like The Cure? That’s because the trio has enlisted collaborations from top notch artists such as Robert Smith (The Cure), Lisa Hannigan, Jon Spencer (of Blues Explosion), Tom Smith (The Editors), Green Velvet,  Morgan Kibby, M83 and Ireland’s James Vincent McMorrow.

I’m not sure what this video is really about…and I’m not sure what that creature is. All I know is that I felt bad for it while watching…it sort of made me sad. Quite an odd video.

Anyhow, you’ll like them if you’re a fan of Depeche Mode and Gorillaz.

Highly Anticipated: Digitalism – I Love You, Dude

New album from Digitalism June 21st!

With firing tunes such as “Jupiter Room” and “Pogo” backing up the hype alongside remixes for Depeche Mode and Daft Punk, Digitalism toured the Idealism album for a couple of years and then got back to work, cutting back to a few DJ dates a month so they could concentrate on crafting I Love You, Dude in their Hamburg bunker studio.  The new album further serves their aim of getting everyone to dance with 10 tracks each of with their own vibrant identity. The band set the bar high for themselves, featuring tracks like  “Forrest Gump,” co-written with Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, “Circles,” with its Who-ish keyboard and apparently existential lyrics, and stand out track “2 Hearts,” a curveball of a pop song.

Track list for I Love You, Dude

  • 01. Stratosphere
  • 02. 2 Hearts
  • 03. Circles
  • 04. Blitz
  • 05. Forrest Gump
  • 06. ReeperBahn
  • 07. Antibiotics
  • 08. Just Gazin
  • 09. Miami Showdown
  • 10. Encore

Dearling Physique

Last month, I posted a video from new band Dearling Physique. Now, the Minneapolis band is the “Artist of the Week” this week on MTV’s new music blog, Iggy. Read their Q & A with Domino Davis by clicking here.

The band’s debut album Deadeye Dealer is out now. Also, they’ll be at SXSW on March 15th when they appear as part of the Art Disaster/Fanatic showcase at Beauty Bar. You can grab a couple free mp3’s by clicking here and heading to Last.fm.

The two singles that have been getting the group attention are “Discipline Your Hands” and “Monster,” both of which are the best from Deadeye Dealer. Though I like the idea of the group and think they’re interesting, those are the only two tracks that got more than 2 stars from me. “Sleep and the Heart” almost gave me nightmares from the demonic, scary sounding voices. Otherwise, they have similarities to Depeche Mode, which is a plus; unfortunately, I just couldn’t get as “into” them as I’d hoped.

Pretty Good Dance Moves “Bad Habits” Single

Dance Duo Pretty Good Dance Moves have premeired a new track called “Bad Habits”, which features the dreamy, sultry vocals of Lissy Trullie. With nods to Prince and Depeche Mode, this track comes just in time for dancing on roofs and cars in the heat of the summer night.

PopWrap says:

The ghostly haunting vocals of Lissy paired with the synth and spacy layers that Pretty Good Dance Moves have claimed as their signature sound mix together in “Bad Habits” like chicken and waffles — sweet, spicy and paired like our ears have taste buds.
