Stream: The Kin – Get On It EP

unnamed (1)

Popular alternative rock band The Kin kicks off yet another nationwide tour on February 5, 2014, in support of their new five-track EP Get On It (Interscope Records). Fresh off their Australian and US tours supporting P!NK, the power trio amps up to headline their own two month tour, bringing their explosive live shows to 27 cities across the US in February and March 2014.

The Kin, comprised of Isaac Koren (vocals, keys), Thorald Koren (vocals, guitar, keys), and Shakerleg (drums, percussion), have enraptured live audiences worldwide with their powerful vocal harmonies, hard-driving guitar and percussion and captivating stage presence. It was only a matter of time until major labels took notice and Interscope signed on to help promote their current EP Get On It, released in October 2013.  The Kin teamed up with legendary producer Tony Visconti (best known for his work with David Bowie and T.Rex), as well as former Record Plant staff engineer Jack Douglas (John Lennon, Aerosmith) and Nic Hard (Joey Ramone, The Church) to capture the group’s gritty, propulsive rock sound that comes across best during their live performances.  The Get On It EP is currently charting in the US and Australia and went gold in New Zealand, reaching #2 on the Pop charts there.

During their tours, The Kin also are known for causing trouble with their signature “Musical Robberies” where they burst into a randomly chosen high-traffic public area, such as a diner or airport, and surprise innocent on-lookers with a spontaneous live performance. The Kin have launched several of these “musical robberies,” including at the Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Soho House, Seven Grand Whiskey Bar in Los Angeles, and a French airport. “We’re looking to surprise people and give them a musical experience,” says Isaac. “Even if it’s just for a split second, it’s a rush for everyone involved.”

Soon, the likes of The Flaming Lips and Big Boi [Outkast] began seeking them out for studio collaborations. Republic Records also recognized their spirit and joined forces with them in 2013.

New Tour Dates and Remix From Smallpools

img_smallpools_140923833534

Smallpools, the Los Angeles 4-piece announce two new tours today. After headlining the sold out Neon Gold’s Popshop West party on September 4th, the band will divide their time between the studio working on the full-length debut and touring with Walk The Moon in October and 21 Pilots in November.  The foursome consist of Sean (vocals/keys), Mike (guitar), Joe (bass) and Beau (drums), just finished their tour with San Cisco to a wild response. The release of their self-titled debut EP gained them critical acclaim. Neon Gold calls “Mason Jar” “a sepia splash of power-pop that crystallizes into a starscraping smash before the verse even kicks in, as stadium-sized Of Monsters And Men gang vocals ride high on the buoyant flair of Smallpools’ youthful, Two Door-esque ebullience.”

Their first single “Dreaming” was produced by Captain Cuts and instantly shot to #1 of Hype Machine within the first 3 days of its revealing. Check out where I originally posted “Dreaming” and a couple other remixes here AND check out the latest remix below.

Wild Belle Tour Dates

WildBelle

Chicago based duo Wild Belle have announced an extensive fall headlining tour that will kick off September 5 in Madison, WI.  The band recently made their Lollapalooza debut before they headed to San Francisco to play Outside Lands.  After previously touring the states opening for Passion Pit and Toro y Moi, Wild Belle will travel across North America and back for over 25 headlining tour dates -making this their biggest headline tour to date (full list of dates below).  To catch a glimpse of Wild Belle’s life on the road, watch the band’s self-directed video POSTCARDS FROM THE ROAD Nº3.

Wild Belle’s live performances have been recognized for their catchy hooks and infectious sound.  The band took their effortlessly sunny set on the festival circuit this summer with performances at Coachella, Sasquatch, Firefly, Full Moon Festival, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands.  The musical talents of both siblings shine during the band’s live performances, with Rolling Stone noting how “Natalie (breezes) about the stage with relaxed bravado while Elliot (switches) effortlessly between keyboards and sax…creating an organic wall of sound.”

In June the band stopped by a Los Angeles bike shop to record a performance with KCRW of “Love Like This” for NPR’s Field Recordings.  Noted by the Chicago Tribune for their “breezy sounding pop music,” Wild Belle is currently featured in Glamour’s summer music issue and as Time Magazines “Band to Watch”.

Wild Belle is Natalie and Elliot Bergman. The band is joined live by Kellen Harrison (bass) as well as fellow NOMO members Erik Hall (guitar) and Quin Kirchner (drums).

Show: Fitz and the Tantrums

6755_10151534410907313_2034320834_n

I came really super close to not being able to make it to this sold out show here in Pittsburgh this past Monday. And oh, let me just say, I would have thrown some MAJOR fits and tantrums if I had missed this!

But, my friends over at BB Gun Press totally saved the day and helped this girl out. And I couldn’t have been any happier. If you keep up with my ramblings, you’d know that I couldn’t WAIT to see Fitz and the Tantrums perform “The Walker” live. At one point, I really thought they weren’t going to play it, either! They waited until the very end, and performed it for one of their encores! Which, surprised me because I thought I’d hear “The Walker” earlier and they would save “Out Of My League” for an encore. BUT, they played it earlier, and “Moneygrabber” was the second song in their set. Oh, and they did a pretty awesome cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” too.

I really wanted to upload the video of “The Walker”…BUT:

  •  It sort of got screwed up and ended up being split into two videos.
  • My phone isn’t letting me upload it.
  • Anddddd you can hear me screaming like a maniac that just got let out of a mental institution.

So, here’s a few pics instead.

Also, I don’t wanna forget to shout out to the opening bands of the evening, too. Ivy Levan was beautiful and wonderful!

Here’s a pic from her Twitter:

IvyAnd here’s a video incase you need introduced:

And also a shout to Saints of Valory, who were also quite awesome…and nice guys. I’m not finding any official videos to post, but if you want to check out their new EP Possibilities that just came out yesterday, you can check it out here. I like “Long Time Coming.”

CHAPPO Show at 6119

6119

Last night I went to see Chappo playing at a venue that I’d never been to, 6119. The name is also the address. My friend and I finally found it by the small logo on the door. “It doesn’t look open,” she said. “This is the loading door only, it says,” I explained. So, we took a stroll around the block to the other side of the building and alas, there was the entrance (though still quite hidden).

We went up some steps and there were two guys sitting there taking money and checking ID’s. I saw there was no credit card machine, so I asked, “Is this place cash only?” They said yeah, but there was an ATM upstairs. Perfect. “Is there alcohol up there?” “Yeah,” the guy laughed. Perfect. Okay, so we had enough cash to get us upstairs and then we could get more out of the ATM.

When we went upstairs, it was pretty cool. It was a long hallway with the stage at the end. We went to the bar and tried to figure out what to get to drink. The bartender described the place as a “glorified house party,” which I liked. After our first or second drinks, I noticed the ATM had no shine to it. It wasn’t plugged in. I asked our bartender friend if it was available. “It’s broken,” she said. Well, that ended our alcohol intake. Despite that, we had a really good time. One of the people working there told us that the place hasn’t been open for quite a year yet, but it’s set to shut down shop next month. Good thing we made it just in time! Someone bought the buildings on the block and so the venue will be looking for a new home.

Chappo was better than I expected. When I listened to their album, not many of the songs stuck with me, but hearing them live made me LOVE it. I also know the drummer from about 5 years ago when he played with a different band. He said that this show was a little bit different because it wasn’t really a “rock club” and there weren’t as many people as they’d had on other legs of the tour. Regardless, he assured me they’d play with the same amount of gusto. And gusto they had. Alex Chappo passed around a huge ass dreamcatcher and encouraged us to put our dreams in it, which was really cool. He also talked about stuff like ghosts and shapeshifters, which I thought was also really cool. Surprisingly, they played their hit “Come Home” three songs in. It may have surprised me, but I like the unpredictableness of it. Towards the end of the show, he asked us to stand around in a semi-circle where we all danced and clapped along.

I heard they’re working on a new album at the moment, too.

Passion Pit and Youngblood Hawke

Two nights ago, a group of us went to see Passion Pit. I was excited to see them, and one of the opening acts, Youngblood Hawke (which I interviewed back in August and you can check it out here). Youngblood Hawke’s set was really fun and upbeat. A friend of mine didn’t know who they were, but said she really liked them. They played all of the songs from their EP. The crowd was really pleased with “We Come Running” when they ended their show with the recent alt rock hit. They were a great predecessor to Passion Pit.

When Passion Pit came out, everyone went crazy. Their first song was “Take a Walk” and it was awesome! I was surprised because it’s not very often that a band starts out with one of their biggest hits, but they did, and I liked it. They mixed between songs from Manners and their newest album Gossamer. It seemed to me that everyone really digs Manners more. Things were a little slowed down when songs from Gossamer were performed. Then, at the very end everyone perked right up when they finished their set with “Sleepyhead”. I couldn’t WAIT to hear it and apparently everyone else felt the same. It was also super cool that all the other band members that were touring with them all came out on stage to dance around. One of them was taking video of the whole thing, catching glimpses of the audience and the other musicians jammin’ out. My favorite parts of their performance were the first and last songs. They had a great turn out for their first show in Pittsburgh. Make sure you check out the awesome video at the top of this post that someone took of the finale. It gives me chills of happiness when I watch it and remember that feeling of being there.

Psychadelic Rock Trio Capsula Touring This Month

Capsula’s ripping set will feature songs from the critically acclaimed sophomore album and sonic masterpiece, In The Land of Silver Souls (Krian Music Group) that has been garnering nationwide praise from media and fans alike. Their music roars with a combination of garage rock toughness and modern style that have earned them a wide range of comparisons from The Stooges and The Pixies to Sonic Youth and David Bowie.

Their first single “Hit ‘n’ Miss” kicks off with a classic garage rock riff, before Martin rips into a Bowie-esque tale about the rise and fall of those seeking fast stardom in the big city.

“The album’s single, “Hit ‘N’ Miss,” resonates like a distant cousin to David Bowie’s “Suffragette City,” featuring a chorus that should have you singing along fairly quickly.” – RCRD LBL

“Listeners who have been hankering for a satisfying set of down and dirty rock and roll basics, served up with energy and panache, will find their dreams answered. Party on, Garth.” – PopMatters

Witnessing Capsula live is an experience not easily forgotten, as they tear though blistering washes of guitar and pounding rhythms delivered with the true essence of punk rock attitude.

Capsula continues to prove that rock and roll is definitely a universal language. You don’t have to understand every lyric of a Capsula song to capture the unbound emotion of their dirty rock.

Capsula US Tour Dates:

5/23         Highline Ballroom in New York, NY

5/24         Howard Theater in Washington, DC

5/25         Level Room in Philadelphia, PA

5/26         31st Street Pub in Pittsburgh, PA
