Albert Hammond Jr. – New Song + Tour Dates

AHJ

Listen: Albert Hammond Jr. – “Born Slippy”

Today, Albert Hammond Jr. is pleased to share plans to release his third solo album, and first in five years, entitled Momentary Masters. The album’s name derives from a phrase in astronomer Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space – a notion that underscores the truism that every triumph is fleeting.

“I feel like the best songs I’ve written, as soon as I was done, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I did it!’ But in that split second that it comes, that feeling goes,” Hammond Jr. explains. “It’s the same thing when you find complete happiness, you find this complete low. I feel like that’s what being creative is: It’s you bouncing with emotion and what you capture in those bounces. Accept where you are and use it.” And Albert has done just that. In a recent interview with Paper Mag, Hammond Jr. discusses his new domesticity and it’s influence on his third record. “He’s cleaned up, gotten hitched, and moved from the city to upstate New York, but hasn’t lost the ability to create soaring rock riffs and catchy hooks.”

Due to drop on July 31st in the US via Vagrant/BMG, Momentary Masters serves as a follow up to 2006’s Yours To Keep and 2008’s ¿Cómo Te Llama?  “We’re huge fans of Albert Hammond Jr.’s and are excited to be working with him on his best effort yet,” says Jon Cohen EVP of Recorded Music for Vagrant/BMG.

Recorded in Hammond Jr.’s home in upstate New York in a converted barn he calls One Way Studios, Albert created Momentary Masters alongside guitarist Hammarsing Kharhmar (Mon Khmer), guitarist Mikey Hart (Bleachers), bassist Jordan Brooks, and drummer Jeremy Gustin (Delicate Steve, Marc Ribot). The sessions were extremely relaxed which encouraged space for creativity and collaboration. The result offers a new kind of dynamism: you can hear it in “Power Hungry,” with its Morricone-esque grooves and a Mellotron manipulated to sound like violins; or in the aggressive stomp and anxiety-inducing guitars of “Caught By My Shadow.” Even on “Side Boob” – titled so because, hey, why not celebrate a good thing? – there’s a jittery energy that leaves the listener excited.

Momentary Masters is a record that reflects on missed opportunities, choices made, wasted time, and paths not chosen. He calls it “a love letter to my past self.” The music might be largely buoyant-spry, breezy guitar lines locking together and dancing apart – but melancholy frequently seeps into even the sunniest of toplines. It’s a record of acceptance, too. Tucked in the songs is an exploration of the reconciliation of two halves: the best self that you present to others, and the self that slips through and lies exposed when your guard drops.

Albert Hammond Jr. will be on tour in North America from the beginning of September until the beginning of November. All dates (except fests) are on pre-sale beginning today directly via Albert’s website.  A full list can be found below.

Los Angeles’ quartet Smallpools will release their debut album LOVETAP! March 23rd through RCA Records. Lyric video for “Karaoke” premieres today on NYLON HERE. I’ve been in love with the song since I first posted it back in December here. Spotify will be streaming the album beginning March 17th as part of The Drop Program. Catch Smallpools on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers March 16th before they swing through SXSW in Austin, Texas before their 32-date USA tour (see below for dates).

After bursting onto the scene with their 4 song self-titled EP, Smallpools has toured to all corners of North America opening for WALK THE MOON, Neon Trees, Grouplove, MS MR, Twenty One Pilots, and Two Door Cinema Club, played Lollapalooza and Firefly Festivals, and closed the year with a sold out Live Nation “Ones To Watch ’14” headline tour. The release of their self-titled debut EP gained them critical acclaim and brought them their national TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, performing their debut single “Dreaming” which was produced by Captain Cuts. You can see the video HERE, which has 4.8 million views.

Supporters like VogueInterview MagazineIdolatorBuzzFeed etc all praised the band’s catchy songs and invigoration live shows. Neon Gold called “Mason Jar” “a sepia splash of power-pop that crystallizes into a starscraping smash before the verse even kicks in, as stadium-sized Of Monsters And Men gang vocals ride high on the buoyant flair of Smallpools’ youthful, Two Door-esque ebullience.” In addition, NYLON Magazine premiered the Charli XCX vs Twin Idol Remix of “Dreaming”

New Track: Oh Land – “Head Up High”

Electro-pop singer-songwriter & producer extraordinaire Nanna Øland Fabricius, better known as Oh Land, today announces her fourth studio album, Earth Sick – set for release November 11th via her own independent imprint, Tusk or Tooth, in collaboration with Kobalt Label Services! Immersed in her signature soundscape of lush vocals, rich string arrangements & infectious melodies, the album is a hybrid of masterfully woven symphonic & electronic sounds, and marks a full-circle return to the artist’s bedroom production style.

Earth Sick first single “Head Up High,” featuring bouncing synth rhythms & infectious, hook-laden vocals, was written for a friend going through a tough time in her life as encouragement to, quite literally, keep her head up high. Nearly forgotten about by Nanna, the same friend reminded her a year later whilst deep in the throes of recording Earth Sick. The song was finished almost instantly & added to the album.

Frustrated by the struggle to keep her head above the waves and hold onto a sense of idealism despite the complexities of life, Oh Land grasped the struggle as the inspiration for her lyrical exploration on Earth Sick. Anchored by melancholic anthem “Machine,” which opens the album with delicate yet industrial textures, tracks “Little Things” and “Earth Sick” continue the existential lyrical journey combined with the singer’s love for orchestral arrangements.

Oh Land began her career rather unconventionally following a ten-year budding career in ballet, which was ended abruptly by an injury. Searching for a new way to incorporate music into her life, she began recording in her bedroom and discovered an early knack for production. In 2008, she released her debut album Fauna to much critical acclaim, and has spent the better part of the past four years supporting her following releases, Oh Land Wish Bone, and supporting artists including Katy Perry & Sia on the road.

Be sure to catch her when she plays New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on October 21st during CMJ- marking her first NYC show in a year!

Cut Copy Releasing Oceans Apart Compilation Next Month!

Oceans Apart

Cut Copy has truly become an international band in the past decade, having released four albums & performed over 1,000 global headline tour dates & prestigious international festivals in the process. They’ve additionally DJ’ed continuously during that period, remixed a selection of amazing artists, and run their own dance imprint, Cutters Records. The global Melbourne ambassadors have now just announced Cut Copy presents: Oceans Apart, a 19-track continuous DJ-mixed snapshot of new & exclusive music from their hometown’s thriving underground dance music scene & club culture mixed by the band themselves- set for release digitally November 11th! In addition, two vinyl EPs of compilation highlights will be released on November 18th. For an early taste of the compilation, fans can give NO ZU’s “Raw Vis Vision” a spin.

Listen: NO ZU – “Raw Vis Vision”

Both a local scene document, which is increasingly rare in this global age, and a bumping 80-minute non-stop dance party, Cut Copy presents: Oceans Apart is the product of the band’s observations of its hometown, where it became undeniably apparent that this fertile community was mushrooming. As frontman Dan Whitford elaborates, we’ve always found deep inspiration in the music of our home city. It’s where Cut Copy started, as just one band in a potent community of unique and likeminded artists. But it also continues to inspire and surprise us, with great new music constantly bubbling to the surface.”

The motivation behind the compilation came from a late night conversation in a Melbourne club with a friend of mine. As we excitedly shouted over the noise of the dance floor, one of us said ‘the dance scene in Melbourne has gotten so interesting over the past few years- someone should really document this!’, adding “We looked at each other knowingly, and from that moment, the idea for Oceans Apart was born.“

Cut Copy presents: Oceans Apart threads together a cross-section of the different party crews, label rosters & ambitious lone rangers that have been catalysts in making Melbourne vibrant & happening week in, week out- all in the format of a continuous dance mix, which is what the music was made for.

There’s been much speculation as to how this unprecedented wave came about. Is the fluoride in the city’s water supply having positive side effects? Is it the mediocre Melbourne weather that’s either keeping people on the dancefloor or in house arrest, tirelessly tinkering in the studio? Is it the abundance of late night venues or the long standing presence of two influential community radio stations? Or does it all come down to the appreciative audience that are just as critical as the creators? All we do know is that this epidemic can’t be stopped and needs to be celebrated.

Listen: The Knocks – “Classic” (feat. Powers)

“…a straight up summer smash, the kind of dance track that hangs in an era-less vacuum; the kind of tune makes you feel like you’re in a movie montage, that begins in the hazy magic hour and splices together every amazing moment till dawn.” VICE’s Noisey
“…the pair lands a sound timeless enough to conjure, via those perky guitar licks, catchiness ranging from modern Daft Punk, to old-school Sugar Ray, to that Len song, ‘Steal My Sunshine.’”
SPIN

NYC’s The Knocks are a distinctly 21st century duo, declared by NME as one of the “20 hottest producers in music” & by The Guardian as “cred-pop’s answers to The Neptunes.” Now one of the most buzzed-about duos on the electronic circuit, the blog world darlings recently announced the release of their debut full-length album, Endisco – set to drop October 7th. Endisco will feature collaborations with a wide range of superstar talent, including St. Lucia, Wes Miles (Ra Ra Riot), Adeline Michele (Escort), X Ambassadors, Sneaky Sound System & more.

Endisco album single “Classic” ft. Powers is a funk-infused dance anthem punctuated with The Knocks’ signature party-starting guitar loops, infectious keys & sultry vocals- the consummate summer anthem.

Having spent the last three years jet-setting around the globe for DJ gig, sharing stages with Grouplove, M.I.A., Chromeo & others, the duo will be on the road once again this summer- taking their ecstatic live show to college towns across the country as well as stints at New York’s Full Moon & Montreal’s ÎleSoniq festivals.

The Knocks consists of B-Roc & J-Patt, who moved in together after dropping out of music school in NYC. J-Patt’s background in soul & funk, and B-Roc’s years spent immersed in trip-hop & hip-hop beats, has allowed them to quickly ascend the production ranks. Initially gaining recognition for their remixes for artists including HAIM, Santigold, Foster the People, Two Door Cinema Club, Ellie Goulding & more, they eventually found themselves experimenting with sounds of their own. The guys didn’t think much would come of a nearly five-minute track they’d been building, all tense beats & tingling synths: “it kind of started out as a joke,” stated B-Roc. “But people were liking that more than the stuff we produced for other people. It felt right.” The duo quickly discovered a newfound freedom in creating their own songs: “it’s better because it’s our own, and we can do whatever we want with it,” explained J-Patt.

“I think we captured a timeless electronic sound and I’m really proud of it,” said Lights.  “This record felt like a triumph after a hard dry spell. Lights’ previous two heralded studio albums, The Listening (2009) and Siberia (2011) are both Certified Gold and feature the pop hits, “Drive My Soul”“Ice”“February Air” and “Banner”.  The avid gamer and tattoo aficionado has commandeered the Warped Tour circuit over the years, been invited onstage with Kaskade and Deadmau5, and amassed fans in John Mayer, Rancid, Miley Cyrus, Bob Ezrin, and more.  In 2009, she took home the Juno Award for ‘Best New Artist’ and reigns as a social media queen with over 1.2 million Facebook likes, 534,000 Twitter followers, 50 million YouTube channel views and 300,000 Instagram fans.
