Newest Love: Hollow & Akimbo

“…10 tracks of awesome!” – NYLON Guys

…a buoyant and impeccably layered sound full of vibrant little melodies, chirpy electronics and choppy beats” – WNYC

“Newcomers Hollow & Akimbo have been treated to a typically synth-soaked remix of their “Singularity” single by Ghostly affiliate Com Truise.” – XLR8R

Hollow & Akimbo construct a peculiar- yet enthralling- brand of cerebral electronic pop. Today, the trio releases their self-titled debut LP via Quite Scientific Records and share album track “The One Who Has to Carry You Home” as a free download!

Having previously unveiled LP cut “Singularity,” which features deliciously fuzzy guitars & earnest, yearning vocals, The One Who Has to Carry You Home” further showcases the trio’s skill at creating pop songs with a unique electronic-meets-rock edge.

Written, recorded, mixed and mastered entirely by the band, Hollow & Akimbo features gritty textures layered over intricate arrangements. Combined with a special blend of looped rhythms, the group- Jon Visger, Brian Konicek & Mike Higgins- have created a collection that is difficult to categorize.

Recording together at home in basements, bedrooms, attics, and closets, Hollow & Akimbo have amassed an ever-evolving archive of musical snippets, song fragments and a fair share of noisy four track experiments.

Newest Love: Little Earthquake

unnamed
Little Earthquake is the brainchild of siblings Mathew and Justin Hyland, keen students of indie pop, embracing rock, electronic and acoustic instruments to bring their quirky electro-pop melodies to life.

Based on the Central Coast of Australia, the brothers grew up in bands together at school before heading to the states where they toured as guest members of US indie rockers Lydia, crossing the country and getting a taste for the road.

It was winding their way across American highways that the brothers began writing together for a new project, creating tracks which would go on to become the basis for Little Earthquake.

Returning to Australia in 2013, Little Earthquake was born, named after a Facebook status that Justin stumbled across. After reading the comments of people who agreed they had all felt it, he wanted their music to affect people in the same way.

The brothers teamed up with producer Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels, Pnau) who took their songs to a new level, creating the basis of their forthcoming EP (due out in April). One of the standout tracks from the sessions was “Planets” which would go on to become the band’s first single.

Newest Love: Electro-Swing Band Klischée

k

Their sound is international and their ambitions are spot on. The musicians and entertainers of Klischée have been working
meticulously on their electro-swing oriented music, but now in the year 2013 they seem to have definitely found their own signature.
Their latest singles “Tiquette”, “Sometimes” and “Tin Tin” are proof, that no stage is small enough anymore, for the producers Dominique Dreier, Kilian Spinnler and their Crew. Performances all over Europe are part of the agenda even before the release of their LP and it won’t be long until Klischée becomes one of the rather more successful CH-export hits. The five members can look forward to some eventful days and we’re eagerly expecting whereto the musical path these five electro-swingers will lead.

Newest Love: Francis Lung

francis
“…burns with a sharper melody…yet bristles with discontent as it seems to address Wu Lyf’s tumultuous band dynamics with the lyrics” – Dazed Digital
Francis Lung unveils his brilliant new single, “A Selfish Man,” an ambling slice of sophisticated pop that explores the more difficult side of human nature with a nod to his former band’s break up. As his first proper release, Francis Lung partnered with the always on point French label Atelier Ciseaux for A Selfish Man 7″ which includes the Mazzy Star infused b-side “Tsunami Blues (Cause of Me)” due out 1/16. Album art by Tom McClung.
Francis Lung is the moniker of Manchester resident and former bassist of the ever enigmatic WU LYF, Tom McClung. Late last year Francis Lung revealed the first taste of the project with the sublime “Age Limits” stream and accompanying video. Although currently still in progress, his debut collection of music under the working title Faeher’s Son was written over a 3 year period spanning before, during and after the experience in WU LYF, the collection of Francis Lung material bares witness to a fair amount of turbulence and reflection. A true a solo effort, McClung plays every instrument on the tracks and self-records from his home.

Check ‘Em Out: KNTRLR

01_KNTRLR_press_pic

Shot in a Brooklyn warehouse at 4 a.m., the new video for “CCA” by electronic rock duo KNTRLR features snarling vocals and swift-kicking drums from KNTRLR members Michael Henry and Charles Davis as well as a fast-paced chase between trained fighters J. Parker Wood and Andrew Chaffee.

KNTRLR may be an electronic production duo, but it contains the kinetic energy that can only come from humans beating on instruments. Live they play with friends they know from the NY music scene who help fill out the sound and provide an energy you can’t get with samples streaming out of a laptop.

Also, have a listen to “Stab” below. It’s quite a cool down from the adrenaline rush of “CCA”.

Newest Love: Nova Heart

nhheader

“A delightful shock from China ….. a sly variant on Seventies New Wave: a dynamic singer, Helen Feng, who bears a strong vocal resemblance to Blondie’s Debbie Harry, fronting a White Stripes-style rhythm section – male guitarist, wicked female drummer – that threaded loops and programming through heavy blues and dance floor rhythms….. – at once rough and digital… my first best of the fest.”  – ROLLING STONE (David Fricke, Senior Editor)

If the music planet these days is inhabited by candy colored pop munchkins, ruby red dance floors, and twerking teddy bears, here comes the Wicked Witch of the East.  Staunchly opposed to the oh so technicolored predictable dance tracks that have goo’d and gaga’d the world, a band out of China, yes you heard me, China, has produced an electronic EP finally with a nasty, nasty side to drive fear into the all the denizens of OZ.

This is not for the club, but for the lonely, lonely walk home after a night at the club.  It’s music for walking through streets filled with tranny prostitutes (Beautiful Boys) and coming down from lord knows what (My Song 9).  As if emerging from the polluted fog of Beijing, Nova Heart gives you garbled transmissions from an enemy satellite, telling you that for every up there is a down, for every pleasure there is a price.

And this message, like an ominous counterpoint, is filled with sex unfulfilled and builds that lead to a slide into oblivion. Dark analog scenes created by Italian cowboy Rodion are filled to the brim with the siren’s call of lead singer Helen Feng that promises both sex and mortality – all at the same time.  Deceptive pop melodies that lead you down the road as if setting you up for the kill before they diverge and you drop down that endless well.
novaheart

Live, Nova Heart is like watching a gathering at a religious service gone dangerously wrong.  The world’s most amazing female drummer, ATOM, the size of a munchkin herself, powers through a show that feels like a voodoo ceremony while Helen holds the pulpit like an evangelical preacher shaking and panting as if she´s feeling some spirit possessing her body and asking for your souls.  The guitarist (LOOP), sends only the dirtiest warbliest Floyd-like hooks out in crashing waves as the bassist plays distorted grooves that seems some strange baby called industrial funk.

And from the music and the sound they tease at past hours on that ruby dance floor, dancing around aged genres but never landing flat footed in anything predictable.  Perhaps only a group coming out of China can dare to make such predictions, the exuberance of the never ending 80’s finally in coda, and all we are left with is an illusion, the afterglow of the ecstasy, and the fear of facing the consequences of our excess.  Perhaps it takes a band that lives in a place where the foibles of a self-obsessed world are exaggerated to 1.6 billion degrees to create the come down album of their generation.  This is not a political statement as it is more of a moment of contemplation on just how it feels when the party is over.  And if you’re lucky, these are the tracks for the after-after party in purgatory.

Newest Love: Ha Ha Tonka

HHT_promo_shot_lo_res_1
“ …deep-fried vocals effortlessly ride a bright, pinched melody” SPIN

“stripped-down, rustic instrumentation to provide the bedding for an immersive listening experience” – Paste Magazine

“southern rock meets The Cure.” – My Old Kentucky Blog

Ha Ha Tonka is an unmistakable indie-meets-Southern rock band comprised of Brett Anderson, Lennon Bone, Lucas Long and Brian Roberts. Sitting at the crossroads of Americana and indie- where Alabama meets Arcade Fire- the quartet are primed for the release of their highly anticipated fourth full-length album, Lessons, on September 24th via Bloodshot Records. The album was recorded at Bright Eyes’ ARC Studios in Omaha, Nebraska and in NYC with producers Dan Molad (Lucius) and The Ryantist.

With the previously revealed album title track described by ELLE as “a steady, rhythmic rocker”, the band has just shared new album track “Rewrite Our Lives” with Paste Magazine. An upbeat, energetic cut containing a runaway chorus & an atmospheric, massive sound akin to that of the great American railroad dream, you can hear the track below (and download it for free in exchange for an email address).

Sonically, Lessons marks a departure from Ha Ha Tonka’s more stripped down style to one that is filled with lush instrumentation. As the title implies, the inspiration behind Lessons stems from life’s biggest ones. Motivated by late illustrator and renowned children’s author Maurice Sendak’s musings on the creative process and what it means to be an artist, the band captured this message and the fragile, oft-irrational comedy of life in sonic form.

Ha Ha Tonka has become renowned for its authentic, effortless brand of indie-Americana, seamlessly fusing the traditional with modern, contemporary elements. Having played alongside the likes of Old 97s, Murder By Death, Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin & more, Ha Ha Tonka will take to the road this fall on a full North American tour (check out the dates below)!

Video + Download: Victory – “This, That or This”

vctry

Victory’s music is sun-bleached rock ‘n’ roll with a pop edge. Set on a foundation of buzzing guitars, fuzzed-out bass, and archaic drum machines, his howling vocal licks and pop hooks make for songs that are energetic and playful, but still rooted in ’60s-era rock. His latest LP, Victory Is Music, explores a range of styles & influences, featuring everything from doo woo-inspired tunes to dancefloor bangers.
