Check ‘Em Out: Wallflower

Wallflower

Listen: Wallflower – “Fabricated”

The first single off their debut EP and direct lyrical follow up to their breakthrough single “Ambien”, “Fabricated” is hand claps, oohs and ahhs, silky guitars, signature skeez and the realization that life can be a bit shit sometimes, but that’s okay.

Formed late in 2013, Wallflower have gone on to become a marquee act of the Canberra music industry and a hidden secret of the capitals leafy streets. Falling somewhere between Kanye West, Jinja Safari and Coldplay, Wallflower are an eclectic band carving their own sound and have already built a dedicated and ever growing fan base.

Named as one of Triple J Unearthed’s top 10 bands you missed in 2014, it’s time for Wallflower to leave the comfort of Canberra and become the band square in the middle of the nation’s consciousness for 2015.

Having spent months between the iconic Studios 301 in Sydney, Abbey Road in London and Studio Sixty- Eight; “Fabricated” is a patchwork creation from renowned producer Simon Todkill (Matt Corby, The Griswolds), Matt Barnes (Coda Conduct, PJ Michael) and front-man Henry Waldren.

“Fabricated” is ultimately a polished, intricate track full of depth and dancing driving rhythm. So volume up, just listen and dance.

Remix: Ships Have Sailed – “Out of Time” (Goatmilk Remix)

SHS

Ships Have Sailed, an alternative pop-rock trio hailing from Los Angeles, debuted their first EP, Someday in 2014, which gained heavy airplay on College, NPR, and commercial radio in the US and Canada. Its success inspired the band to tour the East Coast, during which time they began piecing together their first full-length album, Moodswings.

With the success of Moodswings, Ships Have Sailed have partnered up with several DJ’s to remix the hit singles off the LP, resulting in Re: MIX, out July 14. Among the 4 DJ’s are San Francisco’s future bass impresarios, Dimond Saints, as well as Swedish DJ, Goatmilk.

Check out Goatmilk’s remix of “Out of Time” right now — it’s amazing!!!

Check ‘Em Out: Galvanize

“The guitar is dirty, the drums are spontaneously combusting and the bass is thumping your skull in rhythmic time…this is Galvanize.” – Pancakes & Whiskey

Check out the Philadelphia and NYC-based techno-rockers Galvanize and their new music video for “Mess” from the forthcoming “Projector” EP, which is set to release in September 2015.

When I first started listening to this song, I’ll admit, I thought I was gonna “x” it out and move on. But, I pressed on — and after the first run through of the whole song, I was rocking out in my chair. Three more listens after that, I knew I had to share it! It reminds me a little bit of Bush, with that 90s grunge rock feel.

Galvanize is the techno-rock project of Peter Milos and session drummer Scott Frassetto who played in Moby’s band through the “Animal Rights”, “Play”, “18”, and “Hotel” album and tours.

New Music From Iglomat

unnamed

“Great drama, enhanced by their ability to create lovely passages as well as jarring odd moments” – DC Rock Live

“There are deep, medicated grooves and purposefully rough patches. It’s the sort of record that reveals something different every time—circumstantial, temperamental, and yet somehow definitive.” – NME

After the success of “The Kelpies” project with filmmaker Walid Salhab and following the release of the “TicTac Toe” single, the 3rd Iglomat album is here and ready to drop on CD and download. Iglomat III is again another quality collection of bristling post rock electronica that is as melodious as it is “effortlessly cool”. 9 slices of musical sustenance that are as much “food for the soul” as they are “post rock perfection”. And as if to celebrate progression there are even some small forays from the instrumental path, with an energetic vocal performance on “Elgato Elgato” from 7-year-old Noah Macdonald followed by profoundly heart achingly subtle performances from Rachel Sermanni and Jennifer Austin on “King Of The Sun” and “No Place Like Home”.

Perhaps Iglomat’s main technical unit David Jack describes the album best; “Years ago when we first started on this exploration, Iglomat was just an idea and a couple of guitar lines floating around in cyberspace. Now as we’ve grown musically and with communication technology progressing exponentially, we can work as remotely and as freely as we like. Which means the music that we heard in our heads is as close to what comes out of the speakers as near as dammit. A recent review described us as a little bit like Goblin which made me laugh, as we try to be a lot like Goblin. So we must be getting close.”

About Iglomat:

Iglomat thrives in the transitional realm. The cross-continental recording project operates across landlines, highways, and hard drives – chronicling tales of distance and time. Such efforts would normally lose some spontaneity and urgency in the transfers. But consider Iglomat’s pedigree: producer David Jack, a beat chemist praised by no less authority than John Peel (just check his Peel Session) long-time collaborator and another Peel session veteran Scott MacDonald ; and acclaimed photographer Sandy Carson, whose narrative focus comes through as much on record as it does in print.

Album Stream: Yukon Blonde – On Blonde

YB

“A wildly diverse set of uptempo pop tunes built on thunderous bass lines, spot-on vocal harmonies and the band’s typically sunny guitar riffs. There’s plenty here that would feel at home on a 1980s John Hughes soundtrack—and even dashes of Purple Rain-era Prince.” – SPIN

“The band’s previous releases recalled Fleet Foxes and other pastoral-minded ’70s rock, however, it’s latest offering has more in common with the likes of psychedelic contemporaries Tame Impala.” – Consequence of Sound

“Yukon Blonde have built up a catalogue of perfectly crafted pop songs, but their forthcoming album On Blonde has them expanding into a more sophisticated dance rock sound.” Stereogum

“…dynamic landscapes of psychedelic and synth pop waves that’ll have you ready to go late into the evening.” – Paste

“Yukon Blonde have a special touch when it comes to indie pop.” – KCRW

Yukon Blonde reveal their third-full length album On Blonde, streaming exclusively with SPIN now until release on June 16 via Dine Alone Records. Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Dan Mangan, Sleepy Sun) and mixed by Tony Hoffer (M83, Beck, Foster the People, Air, Depeche Mode), On Blonde recalls the band’s trademark hard-hitting choruses, highlighted by shimmering pop production.  Yukon Blonde emerges with an ambitious, fully realized psychedelic pop album.

On Blonde brings the mastery of seamlessly crafted pop songs that has become expected of Yukon Blonde while experimenting with psychedelic, digital, and synthetic sounds. It is an album gazing wistfully away towards the more shadowy elements of pop production, soft synthesizers, thin punching bass lines, and saturated psychedelic guitar effects. The result is a dynamic, visceral, sonically dense record that stays incredibly accessible to the listener.

Revered for their energetic live performance, Yukon Blonde kicks off their U.S. summer tour in July. Catch a special preview of the band live in NYC next week when they headline Piano’s Monday June 15 and Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn on 6/16 (album release day). Full dates listed below.

Yowza! Hot Song! Mike Dignam – “Addict”

press_photo_a

Listen: Mike Dignam – “Addict”

Following his last hit single “Hurt”, Mike Dignam delivers another dark and sophisticated track off his upcoming album Fight to Forgive. “Addict” showcases Dingman’s talent to tie raw feeling and heavy lyrics into a soulful pop hit. Dignam allows his skills and hard work to shine through in “Addict”. Using the simplicity of drums, bass, guitar, and the haunting vocals of his distinctive voice, to create and own a sound that sets him apart from the average singer-songwriter. Dignam uses his impeccable vocals to carry a forcefulness and yearning within his lyrics, resulting in a song that is full of vulnerability and devotion.

Listen / download: Back Back Forward Punch – “No Answer”

“No Answer” is the new single from Melbourne electronic duo Back Back Forward Punch (aka BBFP), and it is also just the first taste of what we can expect from their upcoming debut EP.

Written and recorded in their home studio in Melbourne’s inner-west, Andy Liddell  and Laura Boland take us on another wonderful romp through their invigorating electronic soundscapes.

Andy creates a stunning tropical island backdrop with his seamlessly playful production, setting the scene for Laura’s lush vocals to take a gradual stroll down its sun-setting coastline. On the surface “No Answer” seems is like a ray of sunshine with its bouncy tropical beats, warm woody chords, and lush comforting vocals, but as you delve further into the tapestry of its sounds you begin to discover a world of turmoil and sadness.

It’s a song about trying to find an ending amongst indecisiveness, not really knowing what to say when there’s no words left to use.

“When we started writing No Answer, the sounds were light and tropical and fun, but as the vocals and lyrics developed, we realised this song had some dark undertones. If No Answer was a postcard it would picture a tropical island with a storm rolling in, and on the back it would be blank” – BBFP

“No Answer” is available to download for free via BBFP’s Soundcloud, but only until its official release on June 18. We can also expect a few more singles from BBFP  over the coming months in the lead-up to their debut EP.

Cut Copy Mixtape

unnamed

Listen / download: Cut Copy – A Forest Through The Trees Mixtape

Cut Copy’s live performances are revered by fans and critics alike as an international festival staple that never fails to leave thousands enraptured, but DJing has always been an essential part of their career. No strangers to the decks, the band is thrilled to announce their first-ever proper DJ tour, making stops in LA, SF, Chicago, NYC’s PS1 series and more. Cutters labelmate Knightlife will join Cut Copy’s Dan Whitford & Tim Hoey on the majority of headline shows, and the combination should bring an unstoppable delicious groove through the night.

“We’ve always DJed as long as the band has been around, and club culture is an important part of what Cut Copy is about,” frontman Dan Whitford explains. “From the ‘Fabric Live’ series Cut Copy mixed in 2006, to the underground Melbourne dance compilation ‘Oceans Apart’ that we curated and mixed last year, this has been an important part of our musical makeup. So I guess it’s probably overdue that we’re finally doing proper DJ touring this year.”

In celebration of the upcoming DJ Tour, the band have released a brand new mixtape called A Forest Through The Trees, which effortlessly blends classics from Talking Heads, Chemical Brothers and Durutti Column with contemporary blazers from Jamie XX, John Talabot and Four Tet. It’s a great example of the band’s deep knowledge of dance music history and thirst for the newest grooves, a combination that is sure to set dancefloors alight.

“Every so often while we’re writing new music I’ll make a mixtape for the other guys in the band, or one of the other guys will put something together for us to get inspired by. It’s our band’s way of staying in tune about music we’re discovering while we’re apart.,” explains Whitford. “I’vebeen doing some low key DJ’ing on my own a little bit over recent months, so I’ve included a lot of tunes I’ve been playing out. But I’ve also weaved in some more esoteric stuff that I’ve been listening to at home. It’s a bit like emptying out musical part of my brain and putting it on tape.”
