Listen: Childhood – “As I Am”

Ahead of their hotly anticipated debut album Lacuna, August 11th on House Anxiety / Marathon Artists, Childhood have released the new single “As I Am” via Stereogum who writes: “a finely honed pop song, one that grooves and shimmers under its sighing neon sheen.”

The track is taken from the London group’s debut album Lacuna, which was recorded with acclaimed producer Dan Carey at his studio in London. With The Guardian describing Childhood as “undeniably exciting and relevant” and Pitchfork as “an exciting young British rock band delivering their spin on luminous guitar pop”, Lacuna is looking set to be one of the albums of the summer.

Newest Love: Green Stone Garden

unnamed

There’s something about Green Stone Garden’s music that remains as elusive and genuine as their home city of Darwin. A remote sensibility, mixed with urban longing. Sometimes you want to escape; sometimes you can’t believe you’ve found paradise at your doorstep. As forthcoming single “Steam” muses, “It’s like the city let go of the rain”.

Together since 2011, alt-rock band Green Stone Garden has become emblematic of the Darwin music scene. They have received critical and industry recognition with the band winning the rock category of the ‘2013 Northern Territory Song of the Year Award’ for single “The Island and lead singer Mike Meston winning the Folk category in 2012. The band was a finalist this year for two of their new tracks, “Steam” and Just a Spark” (yet to be released).

Green Stone Garden have supported the likes of Boy and Bear, Cat Empire, Gomez, Jeff Martin, Husky, Dappled Cities and Big Scary, all of whom have permeated the band’s melodies, storytelling and performance, along with the far away influences of Grizzly Bear and Lou Reed.

The Island” from North EP (released May 2013) garnered airplay around the nation including spot-play on Triple j and also reached a top ten position in the AMRAP charts. As Home and Hosed host Dom Alessio said, “What can I say? This is just an excellent song”. The band was a Triple j Unearthed spotlight artist in May 2013.

After a three-state EP tour, the band featured in the 2013 Darwin Festival. Combining their songs with members of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Darwin’s own Choir of Man, the band rendered a wide-screen concert experience.

This year, GSG has returned to the studio to once again work with celebrated Australian producer Steven Schram (San Cisco, Paul Kelly, Calling All Cars) in Melbourne, with mastering by Grammy nominated Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Chet Faker, Arctic Monkeys) in the US.  The result is the expansive new single “Steam” – set to be released 18 August 2014 – showcasing a new sound for the band and accompanied by a second interstate tour.

Video: RAC (ft. Matthew Koma) – “Cheap Sunglasses”

Acclaimed remixer/artist RAC (aka André Allen Anjos) releases the video for his new single “Cheap Sunglasses” FT. Matthew Koma . The video reteams RAC with director/producer Michael Dwyer who also shot and produced RAC’s video for his first single “Let Go”.  Shot in Southern California, “Cheap Sunglasses” is the first RAC video to feature his full touring band and featured vocalist Matthew Koma (who along with RAC co-wrote the song which hit the #1 top spot on Hype Machine earlier this summer).

“After working with Michael Dwyer on the “Let Go” music video, it was really great to get in front of the camera again for “Cheap Sunglasses.”  We had a blast and I got to have the whole band with me” says RAC.

RAC is the mastermind behind some of the most memorable remixes of recent years, giving the world new takes on tracks by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lana Del Rey, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, and many more.  RAC’s remixes have reached #1 on the Hype Machine charts 31 times and his first solo recording, “Hollywood,” featuring Penguin Prison hit #1 on all four Hype Machine charts at once while his tracks have over 25million plays on Soundcloud.  Originally born and raised in Portugal, RAC settled in Portland, Oregon, where he began to forge his unique brand of indie-pop culminating with the release of his debut album Strangers (out now) on Cherrytree Records.  André co-wrote and produced every song on Strangers, which features an impressive array of guests including, Alex Ebert (of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and 2014 Golden Globe winner for Best Original Score) Tegan & Sara, Penguin Prison, Tokyo Police Club, Cherrytree recording artist Matthew Koma, Katie Herzig, along with Bloc Party’s Kele and electro-pop artist  MNDR.  Fresh off his Strangers Live World Tour,  RAC will perform live at Lollapalooza on August 3rd  and upcoming festival dates including Loufest in St. Louis and Life Is beautiful in Las Vegas.

Video: Slaptop – “Sunrise”

SLAPTOP DJ:
7/26: Los Angeles, CA @ The Standard Downtown (stage 1-2pm)
8/2: San Francisco, @ The Independent (w/ Viceroy, Autograf)

“From ethereal bells to organic percussion, vocoded vocals to glitched out hi-hats, and even a trumpet that shreds (YES. A TRUMPET. THAT SHREDS.), it’s hard to believe this is Slaptop‘s first release.” – Kick Kick Snare

“Don’t mistake the carefree sounds for something overly simple, though, because his ability to blend together jazz, house, and pop into a well-balanced song is second to none.” – Hilly Dilly

Only three weeks ago, Slaptop’s debut track “Sunrise” came out and immediately shot to the top 5 of iTunes’ electronic charts and top 3 of the Hype Machine charts. Now, the track’s video premiered via SPIN, which called it “…influence of the electronic-funk of Daft Punk, Slaptop decorates the “Sunrise” with twinkly xylophone and super auto-tuned vocals that suggest we all “go out in the darkness and look for the sun.”

The single was revealed via This Song Is Sick, which gathered over 100,000 streams in the first 2 days.

Listen: Mainland – “West Coast” (Coconut Records Cover)

“Mainland’s “West Coast” cover doesn’t stray far from Coconut Records’ original. It feels a little more filled out thanks in part to an electric guitar instead of an acoustic one, but the song is perfectly in tact, and it sounds as good as it did when it was released back in 2007.” – Pigeons and Planes

Death From Above 1979 – “Trainwreck 1979”

Globally revered and highly influential dance-punk duo Death From Above 1979 have revealed a plethora of details about their eagerly anticipated new album, including the title, cover art, and track-listing. The Physical World will be released by Last Gang Records / Warner Bros. Records today.

Produced by D. Sardy (Red Hot Chili Peppers, LCD Soundsystem, Wolfmother, Oasis), The Physical World comes a full ten years after the release of the band’s universally acclaimed debut album,You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine, which made Jesse F. Keeler (bass, synths, backing vocals) and Sebastien Grainger (vocals and drums), an underground /over ground sensation. DFA 1979 broke up in 2006 while the first album and subsequent remix album continued to sell inexplicably. They decided to reunite in 2011 and began to perform live picking up where they left off without missing a beat. Their rabid cult has only continued to amass just as inexplicably. Jesse and Sebastien sat down with the NME to talk about the new album release and reuniting. Earlier this spring, DFA 1979 released various clues, tidbits and sonic allusions surrounding a possible new album on deathfromabove1979.com. This will also be your exclusive portal into the wormhole world into all things DFA 1979 now and in the future.

In addition, Death From Above 1979 have announced they will hit the road this fall for an extensive European and U.S. headlining tour, which goes on sale this Friday, July 11th. Please see below for all tour dates.

Listen: Back Back Forward Punch – “Solid Gold”

Listen: Back Back Forward Punch – “Solid Gold”

“Solid Gold” is the uplifting and inspiring new single from Melbourne electronic duo, Back Back Forward Punch; the follow up to their early 2014 release “Emergency Bow Tie,” which gained them international praise and the attention of one of Australia most reputable radio stations, Triple J.

“Solid Gold” sees Laura Boland employ delicate and haunting vocals to tell their story of unraveling perceptions, coming of age, and ultimately revealing that we are all imperfect heroes to someone for a short time. Andy Liddell captivates with his dynamic and intricately layered production as he gracefully shapes the track with pulsing bass lines, manipulated vocal cuts and warbling keys.

Drawing sonic parallels with the likes of Kilter, BANKS, London Grammar and The Kite String Tangle, Back Back Forward Punch have delivered a majestic track that blurs the lines between pop, trip-hop and soul.
