Listen: Krishna Das – “Tara’s Mantra”

unnamed (3)

Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Grammy Nominee Krishna Das has been called yoga’s “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling American chant artist of all time.

With the release of his 14th album, Kirtan Wallah—one who sings kirtan, KD offers a westward-leaning album, fully embracing his American roots in rock and country and yet embodying the spirit of deeply devotional Indian chants – the heart of this latest album is still in the Names that he’s singing.

KD spent the late ‘60’s traveling across the country as a student of Ram Dass, and in August 1970, he finally made the journey to India, which led him to Ram Dass’ own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most as Maharaj-ji.

Given the name Krishna Das, KD began to chant as part of following the path of Bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion. After two and a half years with Maharaj-ji, returned to USA – alas, six months after his return, word came that Maharaj-ji had died.

He took solace in music, finding peace and strength in both his Bhakti yoga practice as well as in such heroes as Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, and Bruce Springsteen (whom he laughingly calls “the Bodhisattva of New Jersey”). KD also co-founded Triloka Records, a California-based label specializing in world music, releasing such artists as Jai Uttal, sarod virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan, and legendary jazz musician/composer Jackie McLean.

In 1994, KD started leading chant at Jivamukti Yoga Center, NYC, with an ever-growing audience of yoga students that has led him to chant with people all around the world.

In February 2013, Krishna Das performed at the Grammy awards in Los Angeles, CA streamed online to millions of viewers. The award-winning film ‘One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das’ has been in over 100 US cities, over 10 countries worldwide and is available on DVD everywhere, and his album Live Ananda (released January 2012) was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Age album category.

“The chanting just hits you and you want to be a part of it,” KD promises. “That’s the point of this whole thing. That’ s what cuts through all the ‘stuff’. You get lit up. You don’t have to know what it means.”

Newest Love: Walking Shapes

Epic” – SPIN

… a strange sort of calm we can’t deny.” – Earmilk

… a bass-heavy, atmospheric rock aesthetic and frenetic live shows that draw comparisons to Radiohead and Alt-J.” – BPM

The new video “Winter fell” from Walking Shapes reflects the state of emotional flux, feeling overwhelmed and is depicted by two masked dancers in a confined space.

“The song ‘Winter fell’ came about during a ‘polar vortex,’” singer Nathaniel Hoho tells Village Voice, who deems the tune “much warmer than its subject matter.” It’s a song about being forced to take a break, reflecting and coming to terms with one’s inner demons, while simultaneously embracing the good things and people in life.

Heralded by publications such as SPIN and Earmilk, Walking Shapes was formed by way of mountains, and through the tides of the city. Their fierce and eclectic debut Taka Come On channels their love to their home New York City. Featuring Nathaniel Hoho on vocals and guitar;
Jesse Kotansky on guitar, violin, vocals
; Jake Generalli on keys, vocals;
Dan Krysa on bass and vocals; and
Christopher Heinz on drums, Walking Shapes meld driving guitars, intricate arrangements and visually evocative songwriting into stunning audio refractions on New York’s sonic landscape.

Newest Love: Morning Harvey

unnamed (1)

Check out this new video from Australian band, Morning Harvey.

Filmed in the Noosa Hinterland in regional Queensland and directed by Nic Mckenzie from Deep Sea Arcade, the clip features cameo’s from some of fellow Brisbane bands, including The Belligerents, The Furrs and The Jungle Giants.

When filming the band had to learn how to play and sing backwards, the clip was then reversed and pace manipulated to give the slowed down, psyched out effect. A mesmerising clip to match the blissed out jams, laced with euphoric girls and surrounded in lush Australian bushland.

“Girl Euphoria (Come Back To Me)” has been making waves at Australian alt radio and is the follow up single to the 2013 Well for Wishes EP.

Video: Milagres – “Jeweled Cave”

artworks-000067566768-fyxko0-t500x500

“Album highlight ‘Jeweled Cave’ has a blissful, spectral sound with Milagres fusing dramatic songcraft with almost pastoral synths.” – Clash Magazine

“…combines a David Bowie-like theatricality with a sprawling prog groove.” – SPIN

” …evokes classic, synth-steered modern rock and highlights frontman Kyle Wilson’s hypnotic voice.” – Rolling Stone

Brooklyn indie rock quartet Milagres recently released their sophomore full-length album, Violent Light, via Kill Rock Stars in the US (out now via Memphis Industries in the UK). The follow-up to their 2011 debut Glowing Mouth LP, Violent Light finds the band channeling influences as diverse as Al Green, Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush, and introduces a darker, harder sound for the group.

Violent Light album cut “Jeweled Cave” is a psych-pop number that immediately bursts open with bouncing synths & a driving bassline. Today, the band reveal the striking accompanying video (directed by Mikel Cee), filled with subtle social commentary on gender roles.

Milagres (Kyle Wilson, Fraser McCulloch, Chris Brazee & Paul Payabyab) will make their national network television debut on Last Call with Carson Daly on April 10th, 1:35am ET/12:35am CT on NBC! Additionally, album cut “Perennial Bulb” was handpicked by tastemaker Nic Harcourt for his radio show Connections.

Hozier Tour Dates

image006

“Irish singer Hozier is poised for a big year.” –KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic

“[Hozier’s] stirring, choral-meets-gospel-folk sound has been steadily converting more and more listeners.” –MTV Buzzworthy

Fresh off a series of incredible SXSW performances and sold out shows in NYC and LA on his first US trip, Irish musician Hozier will return to the US in May for a series of festival and headlining tour dates.  Hozier will start off at the Sweetlife Festival in Maryland on May 10 before embarking on a headlining run starting at Bowery Ballroom in NYC before hitting Boston, Toronto, LA, and San Francisco and finally wrapping up at the Sasquatch! Festival.  A full list of confirmed dates is below.

After releasing an introductory Take Me To Church EP late last year, Hozier has released another 4-song EP to tide fans over as he completes work on his forthcoming full length, due later this year.  His latest From Eden EP is available to stream now exclusively on Spotify and features songs already part of Hozier’s live set, including the title track, which was selected for the coveted Hottest Record spotlight by UK tastemaker Zane Lowe on his Radio 1 program, as well as “Work Song,” “Arsonist’s Lullaby,” and “To Be Alone.”  Recording for both EPs began in what Hozier calls “the grey, pretty boring attic” at the top of the house where he lives, before overdubs and mixing in Dublin, with producer Rob Kirwan (U2, Depeche Mode, Glasvegas, Ray Lamontagne) at the controls.

Born in County Wicklow on St Patrick’s Day, 24-year-old Andrew Hozier-Byrne gained worldwide attention nearly overnight when he posted the video for his song “Take Me To Church” under the moniker Hozier in late September.  The gripping black and white video, directed by Brendan Canty, highlights the turbulent plight of the LGBT community in Russia via the story of two gay men targeted by a homophobic gang.  The powerful video brings life to the emotional song, which touches on the influence of religion on humanity.  While in the US this month Hozier spoke with New York Magazine and Mother Jones about the moving video and the song’s message.

The “Take Me To Church” video has quickly racked up millions of views on YouTube, and the track has been a fixture on Spotify’s Most Viral charts, regularly appearing in the Top 10 in the US and the UK, and Spotify also selected Hozier as one of their Spotlight Artists to Watch 2014.  “Take Me To Church” also hit #1 on Hype Machine’s Most Popular chart, and has also been hovering on the top of Ireland’s singles chart.  The song is currently in the Top 20 on Mediabase’s Triple A radio chart, with early support from Philadelphia’s WXPN, who selected “Take Me To Church” as their Gotta Hear Song of the Week and My Morning Download, Sirius XM, and Los Angeles’ KCRW, who called him one of their Bands to Bank On for 2014 and also had him record a session on their Morning Becomes Eclectic program.

Hozier has been playing to packed rooms in Ireland, and his first London show sold out in minutes, underscoring the phenomenon that has emerged in such a short time.  In the UK he’s gotten great radio support on tastemaker shows on Radio 1, 6 Music, and XFM, and he was featured in the Sunday Times Culture’s “Breaking Artist” section.  In addition to the upcoming US tour dates, Hozier will also be performing at Dublin’s Longitude festival in July and Reading & Leeds in August.

New Music: 3LAU – “How You Love Me” (feat. Bright Lights)

unnamed

Listen: 3LAU – How You Love Me (feat. Bright Lights)

Las Vegas electronic dance music producer and artist 3LAU just revealed his brand new single “How You Love Me” featuring Bright Lights on iTunes and other digital retailers today. This marks his first release through Casablanca and Republic Records, formally initiating this exciting partnership for the 22-year-old impresario.

“How You Love Me” teeters between propulsive and powerful house music production and the impassioned and inimitable vocals of Grammy Award-nominated singer Bright Lights. It’s a slick, smooth, and sexy anthem meant to make listeners dance the world over.

Already, BPM and Radio One’s Danny Howard have embraced the track, and it has garnered enthusiastic support from Tiësto, Nicky Romero, and Hardwell. The track arrives hot on the heels of last year’s “Escape” [featuring Paris & Simo], which landed in Beatport’s Top 3 and peaked at 23 on Billboard’s Dance/ Mix Show Chart. It’s easy to love this irresistible major label debut from 3LAU.

The song hits the web just in time for his first performance at Ultra Music Festival in Miami on the Worldwide Stage March 28 at 5pm alongside some of the genre’s biggest names. That’s not the only gig on deck this week for him though. He’ll be rocking a total of ten high-profile shows for Miami Music Week.

With his own self-proclaimed “Dance Floor Filth” sound, 3LAU is quickly becoming an EDM phenomenon. Self-taught on piano, guitar, and drums at five-years-old, he built a faithful fan base at a rapid rate with “Escape” in 2013. In addition, he also hosts his own “3LAU HAUS” podcast, which draws thousands of listeners monthly.

The year of 3LAU is underway…
