Sample Some Brand New Shit Robot

Shit Robot Announces New 12” on DFA, “Teenage Bass” b/w “Space Race,” the First Release In His New Project, The Green Machine

Speaking about the new release, Shit Robot said: “After the album I just wanted to go back to my roots and make some dance 12”s, music for people to get drunk and jump around to.”

Shit Robot returns with his first new material since the release of his debut long-player, 2010’s From The Cradle To The Rave. After spending much of 2010 and 2011 touring the globe with his live show – including a string of dates opening/performing with LCD Soundsystem during their final shows in NYC – the rebooted Robot is back with The Green Machine. The first result of his Stuttgart/New York studio adventures is a double-header of dancefloor jams, “Teenage Bass” b/w “Space Race,” which will be released digitally and on vinyl via DFA on May 21, 2012.

It’s the first in a series of releases called The Green Machine, which will culminate in an album early next year. Lead cut “Teenage Bass” rides a rude EBM bassline and rave alert sirens, before expanding further with key changing chords and a defining arpeggiator. The hypnotic “Space Race” is a distant relative of 2007’s “Chasm” – a meandering, melodic, star-gazing Robo-techno workout.

New Download: Spirit Animal – “Crocodile Skins”

“Hey! You! Over there!”

New York City’s psychedelic rock beast Spirit Animal has announced plans for their next full-length album, Spiritia Animalia, which will see a release later this year. Today, the band is sharing the first single, “Crocodile Skins,” which is available as a free download through the band’s soundcloud page, along with an album teaser video featuring studio footage of the band at work on Spiritia Animalia. Onstage, Spirit Animal is at once manic and precise, with a non-stop show full of big solos, tight grooves, wild sing-along moments and sweat-drenched performances. Check out this recent live footage from Mercury Lounge for an idea of what their live show is like! With mixing underway on their follow-up full length, Spiritia Animalia is poised to deliver the back-breaking rock and shit-kicking funk missing from the modern music landscape. The band, led by Steve Cooper, has already drawn comparisons to LCD Soundsystem and Animal Collective for their blend of irresistible hooks and riffs, complimented by the bands’ tight rhythm section. Add in a healthy dose of frontman freakout, and you have Spirit Animal.

In 2010, the band released their debut LP, The Cost of Living, a unique and powerful blend of rock, psychedelia and dance. The album garnered broad radio play and earned them placements on ABC’s “Happy Endings” and FOX’s “New Girl.” The band recently released a 7-inch for “I’m Around” on Mecca Lecca Recording Co. The video was also used in an HBO “How to Make It In America” promo.

Newest Love: The Chain Gang of 1974

“The Gang — which is actually just the recording moniker of Kamtin Mohager — delivers silken bursts of New Wave-inspired dance music with meaty, Cut Copy-sized hooks and flourishes of Passion Pit-style falsetto.” – SPIN‘s 35 Must-Hear Acts at SXSW

After self-releasing two albums over the past several years and receiving early praise from the likes of SPIN, The FADER, RCRD LBL, Brooklyn Vegan, and more, The Chain Gang of 1974 is ready to break out with Wayward Fire! Set for release June 21st on ModernArt, this is an album as restless as The Chain Gang of 1974‘s White Guts, an album which funneled three years of instrument-swapping, sample-splicing experience into a lean focused listen, but it melds the standout moments from that release into something wholly new and realized. In creating this new album, The Chain Gang of 1974’s genre-jumping singer/multi-instrumentalist Kamtin Mohager moved from Denver to Los Angeles, severed the ties of the two-year relationship that fueled Wayward Fire, and raised the
curtain on what’s next, proving that this particular film has just begun.

Download/listen: “Undercover”

On Wayward Fire, the laser-guided synth lines of “Undercover” and the rather epic “Hold On”-crowd pleasers that hint at everything from LCD Soundsystem to Talking Heads-make perfect sense alongside such shifting soundscapes as the shimmering keys of “Don’t Walk Away,” the hands-in-the-air hooks of “Taste of Heaven,” and the choruses that cut through the rain clouds in “Matter of Time.” Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Mohager balances his minor-key melodies with bold, bloodletting lyrics.

“Fresh off a string of noteworthy performances at South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, Chain Gang is positioned to pick up where LCD Soundsystem is leaving off – live dance music with an abrasive edge and hipster swagger.” — Denver Post

In the lead up to this release, The Chain Gang of 1974 will play select dates on the west coast with Jamaica.

Sat. April 23 – Los Angeles, CA @ Echoplex

Tue. April 26 – San Francisco, CA @ The Independent w/ Jamaica

Video Premiere of Shit Robot’s “Take Em Up”

Click to watch the video for "Take 'Em Up"

Shit Robot premiered his new video for “Take ‘Em Up” over at Pitchfork on Monday. The video follows LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang on a multi-colored, multiplied psychedelic voyage around Brooklyn.

“Best electronic album coming this year”
The Guardian

“Irish-born Marcus Lambkin (a.k.a. Shit Robot) may be one of the lower-profile members of the DFA crew, but that doesn’t mean the man doesn’t have some serious DJ chops.”
XLR8R

From the Cradle to the Rave (produced by James Murphy) is a near perfect album, and “Take Em Up” is one reason why. The interplay between Marcus “Shit Robot” Lambkin’s synthesizer disco-funk and Nancy Whang’s unflappable vocals is, simply, great. The album also features other DFA family guests such as Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and Juan MacLean.

Shit Robot, aka Marcus Lambkin (aka The Godfather of DFA, according to Murphy), is an Irish-born DJ who has been spinning dance music for over two decades. He’s responsible for not only turning Murphy onto dance music in the 90’s, but also literally lending his carpentry skills to build the infamous DFA studio from the ground up.

Highly Anticipated: This Is Happening

LCD Soundsystem’s new album This Is Happening, was supposed to be released in March, but was pushed back to May. So now, in about a week, we’ll be able to have it (May 18th).

Sadly, James Murphy has informed the music community that this will be his fourth and last album as LCD Soundsystem. I can’t help but to feel sad that ‘this is happening’. 😦

Read an interview with him from Clash Magazine here

ALSO…click here to preview the whole album! I have a feeling I’m going to wear it out this summer!

Track Listing:

1. Dance Yrself Clean (Starts off slow, then surprises you with a ‘BAM!’ into some loud dance music)

2. Drunk Girls (Has some musical elements very similar to “North American Scum”)

3. One Touch

4. All I Want

5. I Can Change* (Reminiscent to the likes of Erasure, Yaz, The Cure, Love & Rockets, etc.)

6. You Wanted a Hit*

7. Pow Pow (sounds like the Talking Heads)

8. Somebody’s Calling Me

9. Home

* = my favorites
