Listen: Ella Eyre – “Comeback”

London soul songstress, Ella Eyre’s rapid rise continues. Since proving herself to be one of the UK’s most enthralling and captivating debut female singers, Ella has been wowing the crowds throughout the UK having sold out a headline tour as well as performing prolific slots at this summer’s festivals.

Now the BRIT award winner announces new single “Comeback”, a thrilling, horn-led smash with a whole heap of attitude. The song is based on a break-up when Ella was 17, but written from the point of view of speaking to a troubled best friend. ‘We’ve all been played, we’ve all been hurt, just take the pain, let that motherfucker burn… you will find in time, that they always come back.

Fierce, bold and brash, it’s a euphoric feel good song about empowerment, independence and strength. Ella says of the track, “ifIf I Go was about whether or not I should leave a relationship, then “Comeback” is the aftermath. There’s no more vulnerability, it’s a very defiant ‘fuck you.'”

Check ‘Em Out: Braque

Braque

Listen: Braque – V1CES EP

BRAQUE is a UK (London) based multi-instrumentalist, he is also a writer, producer, and most of all artist who creates everything himself.

BRAQUE is part of a loose collective of musicians including the highly acclaimed BASTILLE and RAG N BONE MAN. Having written, produced and set up the BEST LAID PLANS label with both of these artists, BRAQUE now believes the time is right to forge ahead as a solo artist.

Influenced by artists like Prince and Kanye, BRAQUE creates shiny modern pop music with a definite slightly darker edge, underpinned by a strong, soaring vocal and grainy, artful imagery. This is definitely not throwaway bubblegum pop music, but an artist who wants to be taken seriously.

BRAQUE’S vision behind the V1CES EP is that each song encapsulates a vice that we have in our lives. This EP will be the first in a Trilogy and contains two singles, “Secrets” and a cover of Everything But the Girl’s “Miss the Rain”.

Listen: Cosmo Sheldrake – “The Moss”

Cosmo- 4 (low res)

Check out the debut single by 24 year-old London-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Cosmo Sheldrake.

Cosmo describes “The Moss” as “an ode to nonsense for its own sake”. Invoking many of the classic figures of nonsense literature, Cosmo embarks on a peg-legged jaunt, draping finely woven vocal harmonies over an underbelly of electronics, strings, and an Armenian Duduk (recorded at a folk session in a country pub in East Sussex).

Over the past year Cosmo has composed music for film and theatre, as well as touring internationally supporting and playing with Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit. In the UK he has shared stages with Bombay Bicycle Club and US indie act Mutual Benefit.

Listen: Annie Eve – “Southern”

annie_eve_feversome
With an impressive résumé that includes supporting the likes of Daughter, Fionn Regan, Little Green Cars, and more recently Matt Corby on his sell out UK tour, 22 year old singer songwriter Annie Eve from London will be bringing out her second EP, entitled Feversome on March 17th via Young and Lost Club.
Annie’s new Feversome EP will feature 3 tracks all written and performed (except slide guitar and accordion) by Annie and produced by Jolyon Vaughn Thomas (British Sea Power, Daughter), with the lead track “Southern” released on March 17th. An emotive and bewitching song, “Southern” is driven by Annie’s haunting vocals, resulting in a sound that manages to be simultaneously powerful, intimate and beguiling, immediately drawing the listener in.
Annie’s self-titled debut EP, which was released last year, picked up support from the likes of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, 6 Music, XFM, Drowned in Sound, This Is Fake DIY and The 405, to name a few. Delicately and respectfully blending the mystical magic of Bon Iver with the raw sensibilities of the likes of Cobain and Regina Spektor, Annie Eve pours sugar and bitter spice into her angelic compositions with disturbing ease and sincerity. Annie’s unusual grasp of language and awkward perspective bleeds into her lyrics and fuels a style of music that is both enchanting and haunting.
At 13, Annie’s brother taught her to play on their father’s Spanish guitar, from there they both shared a love of old blues artists like John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson. As Annie entered her late teenage years she was especially influenced by artists like Patti Smith, Amy Winehouse and “ women who wore their hearts on their sleeve and weren’t afraid to write wildly!”
Following a sold out headline gig at St Pancras Old Church last year, Annie Eve will be embarking on the 2014 Communion New Faces tour with Luke Sital-Singh, Eliza and the Bear and Farewell J.R from February 2014.
24th February – The Bullingdon Arms, Oxford
26th February – St Stephen’s Church, London
27th February – Hare & Hounds, Birmingham
1st March – The Leaf, Liverpool
2nd March – The Ruby Lounge, Manchester
3rd March – The Cluny, Newcastle Upon-Tyne
4th March – The Electric Circus, Edinburgh
5th March – King Tuts, Glasgow
7th March – Holy Trinity Church, Leeds
14th March – Blacks, London

Listen: Lewis Watson – “Colorblind” (Ft. Hudson Taylor)

lw

Years ago, I used to listen to the original of this song by The Counting Crows ALL of the time. Now, London-based Lewis Watson has brought his own version. Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed Four More Songs EP and hitting the iTunes Top 10 with all four of his EPs, he will release his new Some Songs With Some Friends, December 17 via Warner Music.

Produced by Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Jake Bugg) and Richard Wilkinson (Lianne La Havas, Adele), Some Songs With Some Friends features a re-recorded, re-mastered version of single “Even If.” The rest of the EP sees Lewis interpreting some of his favorite songs joined by friends Gabrielle Aplin, Kimberly Anne and Irish duo Hudson Taylor.

Teaming up with Dublin-based act Hudson Taylor, Colorblind is an ethereal track with powerful pop vocal harmonies and lush piano washing over gentle strings and echoing percussion. Check out “Colorblind” ft. Hudson Taylor below.

Introducing: Danny Avila

Danny Avila, the 16-year-old Spanish DJ and producer who recently floored clubbers in London and Germany with astonishing debut performances alongside the likes of Fedde le Grand and Martin Solveig, announced today his official summer residency at Blue Marlin Ibiza.

The iconic venue, which each year plays host to the beautiful, the jet-set and the who’s who of Balearic royalty, welcomes Avila as their youngest ever resident – and in doing so adds its weight to the growing numbers inside the industry swiftly touting Danny as one of the most exciting talents to hit house for years.

To give you just a taste of what Blue Marlin can expect from Avila, check out his official video from Ministry of Sound in London. Making his first ever UK appearance at the express invitation of le Grand for the Dutchman’s roadblock Takeover party back in February, his two and a half hour set blew the capital’s collective clubbing mind. In the words of one London clubber, “Danny Avila was the madness – he’s one of the DJs of the year!”

New Mix: The 2 Bears – Whatever the Weather

Today sees the US release of The 2 Bears’ debut album, Be Strong, which is available on vinyl and CD from the DFA store, and digitally via iTunes. In celebration of the full-length release, the Bears are sharing a new mix, “Whatever The Weather,” which premiered on Spinner RPM. The mix features new tracks from DFA labelmates Factory Floor, as well as tracks from Armand Van Helden, Henrik Schwarz, Gino Soccio, Davina and more. You can still snag the first free single from the album, “Work,” via DFA’s Soundcloud too!

A London record through and through, Be Strong ducks and weaves to the myriad sounds of the city, as The 2 Bears pursue the perfect party record.  Raf Daddy – aka Raphael Rundell – met Joe Goddard (taking time out from his day job as one fifth of Hot Chip) through a party scene that saw them share deck duties at the legendary Greco-Roman parties. Upon venturing into the studio in an attempt to replicate some of the records that they’d lost themselves in the night before, Raf found himself laying down vocals over Joe’s skipping, bassomatic backing tracks safe in the knowledge that they’d soon be replaced by someone with sweeter, more melodious tones. In the end, it was Raf’s voice that characterized and personalized The 2 Bears.

Over its ten tracks, Be Strong conjures up that elusive spirit of the dancefloor without pretension, and with ultimate precision. It’s a soul record in that it’s from the soul, wearing its imperfections with pride. It’s a dance record in that it’ll get you off your seat. It’s a London record in that it couldn’t have come from any other city in 2011, echoing the glorious schizophrenic sound of a late night cab ride listening to a radio with a mind of its own. With minimal effort and maximum respect from their peers, tracks began to be hammered in clubs and on radio by the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Erol Alkan, Pete Tong and Annie Mac.  This summer’s Bear Hug EP cranked things up yet another notch with Chris Moyles giving the track some early morning airings and Elton John and Paul McCartney declaring themselves fans.
