Homoground is a queer (identified & allied) podcast focusing on bands, events, and organizations that often get overlooked by mainstream publications and platforms. Run by Lynn Casper, and based out of Brooklyn, the podcast’s first episode aired in January 2011 and has quickly become a favorite of the queer community.
Casper, who was born in the Philippines, and grew up in North Carolina, became inspired to start the podcast as an outlet for a part of them that had been kept repressed, and as a way to connect with others who were in similar situations. They used the podcast to talk about music they’d discovered and to draw attention to bands that were touring in the area – always making sure to focus on artists who didn’t have easy access to a broad range of exposure otherwise.
“We aren’t blindly picking songs out of a catalog,” Casper says, “Bands seek us out and oftentimes confess their biggest challenges and successes to us. And this shit is real, people dealing with real struggles; with their music, their personal life, their identity/sexuality, mental health. The honesty of the music we feature is incredibly powerful.”
By being accessible online, Homoground is able to reach so many people all over the globe, which is super important. Homoground provides a way for people living in remote areas to feel connected. Casper recently launched a Patreon to help keep Homoground running, which is essential since it’s mostly funded out of pocket, with the help of occasional sponsors. With more funding, they’re looking to bring on more producers & hosts to create consistently better content along the lines of interviews and video series.
“The dream is to become the Queer version of MTV,” Casper says.
The motivation to continue doing Homoground is not only to provide a platform for musicians to get their music out there but to eventually be able to provide financial opportunities to artists and musicians because it’s hard for queers to make a buck these days!

“Their unique style of house is apparent with a dance-driven approach making use of bouncing, deep basslines, jazzy and bright melodies with uplifting vocals while sax lines are thrown in perfectly.” – This Song Is Sick
Since locking themselves in their bedroom studio and emerging with debut album Caught In The Loop in 2006, GoldFish have gone from one of dance music’s best-kept secrets to luminaries both as producers and on the live front. Their can-do attitude and unique musical vision led them to countless sold-out performances and festival appearances, a top 10 in the iTunes Dance chart in the United States, an MTV Africa award, a four-year residency at Pacha Ibiza and a list of support that runs from Robin Schulz and Klingande to Thomas Jack and Sam Feldt. A landmark in itself, their fifth album Late Night People is bound to make the duo stand out further both in and beyond the world of dance music.
Following MTV Africa Award-winning album Three Second Memory, GoldFish is ecstatic in releasing their latest EP Late Night People, in addition to an International fall tour, sharing critically appraised live performances of the smashing new album. The uplifting twelve-track album radiates a sense of coming home, of discovering a piece of the world that has yet remained unclaimed and untainted. Between its funky and sexy title track, the upbeat “If I Could Find” and the ever-vibrant “Rising Sun” (with Pontifex and Grammy Winner, Gustavo Bertino), the album harbors Thirteen records that are as diverse as they are alike, coexisting peacefully.

Cincinnati’s alt-folk favorites Motherfolk have just announced that they will be re-releasing their sophomore album Fold, clocking in with four new tracks, unreleased videos, and behind-the-scenes photos. Describing their sound as “indie rock with a twinge of modern folk”, Fold ranges from introspective jaunts to anthemic rock’n’roll. With tireless touring and energetic live shows that draw in the audience, Motherfolk has established themselves as one of the Midwest’s most exciting upcoming acts. Today, the band is also debuting the visuals for “Ryder Robinson”. The deluxe edition of Fold will be available October 13, right before a string of tour dates with Sherwood (info below).
Preorder Fold (Deluxe Edition) via Pledge Music
In a contemporary independent music scene inundated with up and coming bands, it takes a unique outfit to break through that noise. A truly exceptional group must exhibit authenticity, raw talent, and electrifying chemistry. This, of course, means there are very few of them. Motherfolk, formed in 2013, is certainly one of those most unique and dynamic acts.
Motherfolk began as a collaborative effort between Nathan Dickerson and Bobby Paver, two college friends with a penchant for writing songs with one another. In the first year of the project, the two songwriters made frequent trips to Nashville to record their first endeavor. In 2014, their eponymous debut album showcased the duo’s musical prowess through a genre-bending collection of elegantly crafted songs.
Since then, Joel Call, Ethan Wescott, Karlie Dickerson, and Clayton Allender have joined Motherfolk’s ranks, and the band has made a name for themselves touring all across the nation. The outfit’s high-energy live performances have won over audiences from coast to coast, and their infectious musical persona has become one of the most exciting rising success stories in the indie scene.
In 2016, Motherfolk released their highly anticipated sophomore effort, Fold. Clocking in with eleven compelling tracks, the album further defines the band as an act that effortlessly melds a slew of influences together to manifest their sound into a splendidly cohesive, original pursuit. From surreal, introspective jaunts to foot-stomping, anthemic rock and roll, Fold stands tall as one of the most exciting records of 2016.
Building on the strength of the original release, Motherfolk will release a deluxe edition of Fold this October. With five unreleased tracks, three new music videos, and exclusive behind-the-scenes photos, fans can get a satisfying deeper look into the compelling story of Fold. The band will continue their extensive touring throughout the remainder of 2017, building momentum for what’s to come, and they’re inviting all of their fans, old and new, along for the ride.

“A jewel of sparkling synth and melodies” – VICE/Noisey
“Freedom Fry are on the path to stardom” – Indie Shuffle
“indie pop-folk tracks with upbeat melodies, danceable rhythms” – Flaunt Magazine
In anticipation of their upcoming Strange Attraction EP set for release on September 7th, Los Angeles based alt-folk duo Freedom Fry share new single “Party Down” with VICE’s Noisey. Highlighted by pulsating electronic beats and dreamy, melodic vocals of Marie Seyrat and Bruce Driscoll, the track stays true to the duo’s infectious feel-good sound.
“Party Down is a song about getting through the grind of your daily life and wanting to make the good times last longer – having the foresight when you’re in a good moment to realize that once it’s over you’re going to miss it,” Freedom Fry comments. “We were playing with synths as lead elements, which we haven’t done very much as a band. We wanted the beat to feel like a cross between Michael Jackson and the more danceable songs by The Clash. Once that was in place the rest of it just came together.”
“Party Down” follows the release of the first single and title track “Strange Attraction” released last month via BlackBook. Upon release of the EP, Freedom Fry will bring their kinetic live energy to Los Angeles on September 9th at Sunstock Solar Music Festival.
Freedom Fry has garnered over 50 million track streams and their music can be heard in over 50 films, shows, and commercials including Judd Apatow’s “Love” and Grey’s Anatomy. The band has appeared on The Hype Machine over 50 times, including three #1’s as they continue to turn heads on the international scale. They’ve performed in Europe and throughout the US with the likes of Stromae, Phantogram, X Ambassadors, and others.

Check out this debut track from vibrant German producer LYOD, “Run Away”.
The emotional summer single is characterized by driving beats, mesmerizing melodies, and refined effects. Vibrant synths and a tropical drum wrap around Lucas’ soaring lyrics. Despite this comforting sonic escape, British vocalist Alex Lucas croons a repeating sharp line:
wasted on a generation fighting for peace, but I’m just now wise enough to see the truth
The inspiration for these lines came from reflecting on society. Lucas croons his way through bold statements on how to deal while LYOD layers his warm and playful instrumentals. “Run Away” creates a getaway all on its own.

Artist and musician Grey Gersten has just released the video for his song “The Planet is Doomed.” The video was created and directed by Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio). The song appears on his first full-length album Naked Light, out now.
Gersten’s most recent release prior to Naked Light was an EP under the moniker Eternal Lips featuring guest vocals from Sharon Van Etten and Kyp Malone. The EP received wide critical acclaim, Rolling Stone wrote “Gersten bends and contorts the idea of pop music, channeling his experimental music background into dreamy indie-pop.”
Accompanied by co-producer Shahzad Ismaily on Naked Light, Gersten dismantles artifice and creates an intimate space where the power of vulnerability is revealed. “I didn’t think about what’s cool or what anyone would think,” says Gersten. “I just focused on being emotionally present. The real impact of music comes from feelings. If you suspend self-judgement, you create the opportunity for something universal to resound.” Naked Light burns with the rawness of Neil Young and glows with the otherworldliness of Brian Eno.
For the past 10 years, Gersten has been active in NYC’s experimental rock and art community collaborating with an eclectic mix of revered artists. His recent work Custom Melodies, an interactive multimedia website that features 110 biographical songs created with 110 strangers at his immersive and participatory Mmuseumm exhibition, was featured in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Wall Street Journal, Gizmodo, Paste, Interview Magazine, Time Out NY and other publications. Gersten created an original score for internationally acclaimed artist Tom Sachs’ 2016 feature film A Space Program. Gersten recently performed at The David Bowie tribute concert at Radio City alongside artists Tony Visconti, Blondie, Michael Stipe, The Flaming Lips, Cat Power, The Pixies and others.

Check out this catchy little diddy from a group named thanks. The duo is Steve Pagano and Mario Borgatta and together they combine psychedelic pop, cinematic vibes and electronically influenced beats and melodies.
The duo emerged after meeting at Berklee College of Music in 2009. It was then that Pagano and Borgatta realized they shared the same sentiment for music and how aligned their goal really was. Together they have accomplished this goal in crafting a sound which is simultaneously unique and accessible to the masses. They set out with the intent to express their story through an artistic portrayal of music and lyrics and prevailed in culminating a winning formula which can resonate with their audiences.
Their highly anticipated debut album Colfax, named after the location of their recording studio and where the majority of the album was conceived, is the result of the pair uniting and a culmination of their mutual thoughts and beliefs. Colfax depicts the duo’s endeavor in stepping away from the grasp of musical elitism and producing material which is true to not only themselves but to the world around them. The importance of making a record which was relatable to different people was crucial. “Whatever the theme is, we do our best to keep it transparent so it can be interpreted in different ways”, admits Borgatta. thanks. pride themselves on being people who are in touch with the universe and the people who occupy it. This assimilation with the people can be felt in their music and there is no mistake, it’s genuine.
Lead single “Your World” consists of catchy psych-pop melodies, climactic choruses and upbeat funk rhythms, reminiscent of early MGMT. Enriched with an array of textures and vintage synths it is the ultimate summer anthem. Despite “Your World” having an optimistic, summery feel the song admittedly delivers a powerful message, with the lyrics being in reference to an idea of a present-day society where lives are governed by a political agenda we may or may not agree with. Borgatta reveals, “the idea was inspired by George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and though our lyrics aren’t meant to express any opinion towards a specific political idea or belief, we hope to motivate people to take action in what they believe in”.
“Annabelle” highlights the band’s diversity with a more 60’s psych influence, combining acid-folk and a hint of stoner power-pop. Borgatta admits how they were listening to The Beatles “Across The Universe” during their time spent in the studio and “Annabelle” is a clear indication of this inspiration.
Pagano and Borgatta have seen previous success with numerous TV placements on major networks including MTV, ABC and Netflix, as well as having engineered on records from world renown, critically acclaimed artists such as Muse, Death Cab For Cutie, Foster The People and many more.

British artist, songwriter and producer FØNX has today released his debut single ‘Can’t Get Enough’, which was produced by Grammy award-winner Tommaso Colliva (Muse).
FØNX explains, “’Can’t Get Enough’ came about whilst I was homeless and sofa surfing for a couple of months and after a very colorful twenty-four hours, I found myself writing initial ideas for the song”.
Drawing influence from the likes of Kanye West, Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, D’Angelo, John Mayer and Tame Impala, FØNX delivers R’n’B-infused pop with jazz, funk and soul influences, merging catchy grooves, memorable hooks and intricate guitar licks with inspired lyrical content.
Coming from a musical background FØNX started learning guitar at the age of seven and was soon introduced to rap and hip hop, sparking his enthusiasm to start writing lyrics and create backing tracks from samples.
FØNX continued experimenting with music and film during a number of years of home-schooling and soon enrolled at the Brit School where he studied music.
Since leaving, FØNX has continued writing and producing his music at home, on trains, buses, in coffee shops and backstage before shows, constantly coming up with ideas for melodies and lyrics wherever he went. Playing the live circuit around London and the South East he has also performed at various festivals including Barn on The Farm, Cornbury Festival, Isle Of Wight Festival and Leefest.

Opposites don’t just attract; they make magic.
What happens when you combine a classically trained multi-instrumentalist with a knack for off-kilter cinematic soundscapes and a powerhouse singer with a staggering vocal range? The answer is New York duo Satellite Mode—Jess Carvo [vocals] and Alex Marko [instrumentation, production].
A mélange of booming emotionally charged vocal sorcery and hypnotic sonic backdrops, the group has quietly become a phenomenon. Without traditional promotion, they already racked up over 2 million cumulative plays on Spotify, landed on the coveted Weekly Buzz playlist, and crashed the platform’s U.S. Viral Top 10 and Overall Top 10 in addition to going Top 5 on Hype Machine. Early praise came from Noisey and other tastemakers as the pair wowed audiences throughout NYC since their 2016 arrival. You could think of them as the NETFLIX generation’s answer to Portishead, and you’d only be about halfway there…After teasing out singles, 2017’s Wild Excuses EP formally unlocks the world of Satellite Mode.
“We’re two sides of one whole,” explains Alex. “Even though the music is electronic, I try to bring a live feel beyond the glue of synths. In terms of songwriting, I draw from sixties influences like The Kinks, The Beatles, Velvet Underground, and Lou Reed solo. I bring the rawness. Jess is the honesty and vulnerability. There’s something under that voice a lot of people don’t have.”
“It wasn’t until I met Alex that everything shifted,” admits Jess. “At the time, I was writing a lot and recovering from intense vocal cord surgery. I was told I might never sing again and I was in need of being liberated from who I thought I should be as an artist. I bring a lot of longing to the table. As a performer, I believe my job is to expose myself to others who are having trouble showing themselves. That’s what it comes down to.”
Initially introduced via New York City’s intimate songwriters circle in 2014, Jess and Alex didn’t begin creating until almost a year later. Facing an unspeakable family tragedy soon after meeting Alex, Jess yearned for a cathartic vehicle, while Alex, broken from the disintegration of a long relationship and the malaise of corporate America, needed the same.
“When we first met, we were in such different stages of life,” recalls Alex. “I had this epiphany. I was in a corporate job, and I was like, ‘What am I doing with my life? All I want to do is music.’ I completely changed my life to follow my music. Jess became the outlet.”
“Whatever happened with the tragedy in my life ended up being the impetus for forming Satellite Mode, which helped me rediscover my voice” Jess elaborates. “It gave me purpose and direction. This would be our music. It wasn’t something we were going to pitch out. We peeled away those layers of ourselves and became very personal.”
They uploaded “Wild Excuses” online, and it blasted off almost immediately. In under a year, it individually generated close to 1 million Spotify streams and counting. Now, it serves as the title track of their debut EP. Boasting online favorites “Fair,” “Aphrodite,” and “Warm Fire Lightning,” the six-song set elegantly stirs trip-hop expanse, rock swagger, and ceremoniously massive singing into one intoxicating brew. The single “Bad Woman” begins with a delicate croon that slowly crescendos into an explosion of glitchy electronic tones, spacey guitar leads, shimmering keys, and Jess’s stadium-size pipes as she soulfully declares, “Yes, I’m a bad bad woman.”
“It’s about the double standard of being a girl,” she reveals. “I was thinking about a lot of things all at once. You could see this double standard clearly mirrored in the political landscape. I also found it among my friends’ personal relationships. This angst comes out in our songs, as the double standard is prevalent with being a female in the entertainment industry. It’s a mash-up of all of these frustrations and stories.”
Elsewhere on the EP, they breathe new life into Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” with a vibrant and vivid cover draped in airy textures and tones. “We really like to put our own spin on things,” remarks Alex.
In the end, the connection between Jess and Alex translates to listeners everywhere via Satellite Mode.
“When people hear us, I’d love for them to get that feeling in their stomach music can evoke,” Alex leaves off. “A lot of our art is about overcoming tragedy or changing your life around. It could hopefully be motivating.”
“I just hope they feel everything a little more intensely,” concludes Jess. “My favorite musicians make me feel like I’m not alone in my thoughts and, in some way, speak a universal truth. I want them to have fun and feel lighter. We’re not so different than they are.”
