Listen: Salme Dahlstrom – “Pop Ur Heart Out”

Salme Dahlstrom

“Music licensing queen.” – Wall Street Journal

“Relentlessly hooky and ridiculously accessible.” – Entertainment Weekly

The Wall Street Journal dubbed musician Salme Dahlstrom a “music licensing queen” when, like Moby before her, she managed to license every track from her 2008 album The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade to various corporations and television programs.

At the time, Dahlstrom, who produces, performs, edits, and mixes all of her tracks herself, was not only just getting noticed, she was just getting started. “C’mon Y’All,” one of catchiest numbers on an album of catchy numbers, climbed Billboard’s Dance Chart and eventually received prominent placements in major ad campaigns for CoverGirl, Suave, and Kellogg’s that ran on primetime network television for months.

While managing what inevitably became a highly successful licensing business, Dahlstrom continued to do the work that got her there, and will now release “Pop Propaganda Volume 2: Retro Funk Soul Junction” on September 16th, 2014.  The new six-song collection is preceded by the single “Pop Ur Heart Out” – streaming now via Entertainment Weekly which calls the song “relentlessly hooky and ridiculously accessible.”

About “Pop Ur Heart Out,” Dahlstrom says, “I felt like bringing some soul and poetry to the party.  I used organic instruments – piano and acoustic guitar – and mixed them with glitch effects and Kaoss Pad to give it an electronic edge. It’s one of my new favorites!”

“Pop Propaganda Volume 2: Retro Funk Soul Junction” by Salme Dahlstrom is scheduled for release on September 16th, 2014 via Kontainer Music.  The first single “Pop Ur Heart Out” arrives on August 5th, 2014, accompanied by a trio of remixes of the track by SpekrFreks, DJ Phunkae, and Quadrat Beat on August 26th, 2014.

Cashmere Cat

Listen/download: Cashmere Cat – “With Me” (Infuze Remix)

Continuing a ripping streak of success built off recent hits on the likes Firepower and SMOG Records, he’s put his hands to Cashmere Cat’s “With Me,” with a genre-be-damned, amped-up remix that bears Infuze’s unmistakable signature sound. Starting quiet and building to rapid crescendo, it’s the sort of flip that keeps the best bits about the original intact, while adding a feel to the track that can’t be matched by anyone else.  In a rapidly over-saturating market of “future” sounds, Infuze is sound for sore ears, producing what is really best described as his own style of bass music for a generation of heads wanting more out of the sound.

Check ‘Em Out: We Are Castor

We Are Castor

Invade & Disco, We Are Castor’s second album release with SectionZ Records, dropped July 21st, and is a unique blend of retro disco style, and a variety of live instruments, with modern glitch-hop. Shattering the boundaries between many genres, We Are Castor is carving out its own place at the crossroads between EDM and more traditional styles of live music.

Influenced by blues, swing, psychedelic-rock, electronica, hip hop and folk, We Are Castor patrols the unseen border between music genres. Led by Adrian Thesen out of Trondheim, Norway, We Are Castor is an electronic music band whose members have individual and eclectic tastes and styles; different tastes and knowledge packaged into one collective story that have resulted in pure musical innovation that your ears will remember long after the first listen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGp0fXjc0T8

We Are Castor started out as a solo-project in 2012, named iamCastor. This is when Adrian first started to include guitars, harmonicas and more acoustic instruments. Later that year Adrian connected with Andreas Steen, and the music exploded.

Andreas brought a live sound to Adrian’s production by adding guitar, mandolin, organ and vocals. This inspired Adrian to dream up better material to satisfy Andreas’ fascination with the sound of everything! If there is music in the background, and a car drives by the window, and they share the same note, Andreas will be the first one to point that out.

They met the voice that would round out the band at a breakfast party, where they met the incredibly talented and beautiful Valeria Neira Lillebjerka for the first time. After a mutual friend teased the duo made a beat, wrote some lyrics, opened some bottles of whiskey and wine and she sang “Bon Voyage” in their super-small bedroom. After the recording Adrian and Andreas could not bring themselves to sleep and invited Valeria to the band.

Rounding off the voices of We Are Castor are longtime Jack White and Rolling Stones fan, Kristoffer Støylen Refvik, drummer Håvard Loeng, Magnus Leite on bass, Ada Mathea Hoel on contra-bass.

Back Back Forward Punch – Solid Gold (Pat Lok Remix)

unnamed (3)

A few weeks ago we were treated to the beautifully haunting downtempo sounds of “Solid Gold,” the brand new single from Melbourne electronic duo Back Back Forward Punch. Accompanying the track was a stunning music video shot and directed by Jimmy Ennett (of Crux Media), together constructing a world of anticipation as their story of unraveling perceptions and coming of age unfolds.

Now here’s a remix of the track from Canadian beat connoisseur Pat Lok, which holds the mood well inside the light with his unrelenting influence of animated disco-house beats, as he explores an uplifting environment where smiling and dancing seem like the only things that ever really mattered.

Listen: Night Drive – Where I End And You Begin (Radiohead Cover)

(Download the track free via the band’s Facebook and Soundcloud pages.)

Night Drive transforms Radiohead’s “Where I End and You Begin” into a pulsing, hypnotic, electro-pop track. The band embraces Radiohead’s moody and brooding vibe while bringing Night Drive’s style of dark, disco-pop fans have dubbed as “Future Wave.”

The cover came about completely by chance. While in the studio working on a new track, Night Drive realized the main groove happen to meld perfectly with a Radiohead track. Fascinated by this marriage, they couldn’t resist the opportunity.

Keep your eyes open. The band releases this cover to announce their new album, scheduled for an early 2015 release. First single, “Young Rivals” to be released this September with an official remix by ASTR and official music video by their ongoing visual collaborators, Lobo Sucio Creative.

Listen: Childhood – “As I Am”

Ahead of their hotly anticipated debut album Lacuna, August 11th on House Anxiety / Marathon Artists, Childhood have released the new single “As I Am” via Stereogum who writes: “a finely honed pop song, one that grooves and shimmers under its sighing neon sheen.”

The track is taken from the London group’s debut album Lacuna, which was recorded with acclaimed producer Dan Carey at his studio in London. With The Guardian describing Childhood as “undeniably exciting and relevant” and Pitchfork as “an exciting young British rock band delivering their spin on luminous guitar pop”, Lacuna is looking set to be one of the albums of the summer.

SLAPTOP DJ:
7/26: Los Angeles, CA @ The Standard Downtown (stage 1-2pm)
8/2: San Francisco, @ The Independent (w/ Viceroy, Autograf)

“From ethereal bells to organic percussion, vocoded vocals to glitched out hi-hats, and even a trumpet that shreds (YES. A TRUMPET. THAT SHREDS.), it’s hard to believe this is Slaptop‘s first release.” – Kick Kick Snare

“Don’t mistake the carefree sounds for something overly simple, though, because his ability to blend together jazz, house, and pop into a well-balanced song is second to none.” – Hilly Dilly

Only three weeks ago, Slaptop’s debut track “Sunrise” came out and immediately shot to the top 5 of iTunes’ electronic charts and top 3 of the Hype Machine charts. Now, the track’s video premiered via SPIN, which called it “…influence of the electronic-funk of Daft Punk, Slaptop decorates the “Sunrise” with twinkly xylophone and super auto-tuned vocals that suggest we all “go out in the darkness and look for the sun.”

The single was revealed via This Song Is Sick, which gathered over 100,000 streams in the first 2 days.
