You Can Dance

Whether you know it or not, you know Chilly Gonzales. You’ve for sure seen and heard the commercials for the iPad with that catchy piano tune. The song is called “Never Stop,” and yup, that’s him.

Chilly Gonzales, the notorious (and always brilliant) producer/rapper/world-class pianist is already on a roll in 2011. Check out the Gemini Club remix of “You Can Dance,” which RCRD LBL premiered – head over there for the free download!

Chilly Gonzales – “You Can Dance” (Gemini Club Remix)

Also unleashed last week was the video for “You Can Dance,” which is already over 250,000 views (if you’ve seen it, you know why! Let’s just say T&A). The single, available digitally, features several remixes, including a stellar cut from nineteen-year old blog sensation Robotaki. Other remixes come courtesy of Shadow Dancer, Max Tundra, Edwin Van Cleef,
Cosmonaut Grechko and Popular Computer.

Gonzales is also known as a super-producer of sorts, working with a wide array of artists. Best known for his production work with Feist (whose album The Reminder earned him a Grammy nomination), Peaches and Jamie Lidell, he has more recently worked with Marina & the Diamonds and Tiga…not to mention older collaborations with Bjork and Daft Punk.

Congratulations, CAKE!

CAKE is back on top! The band’s new album, Showroom Of Compassion, has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, marking their first number one album in their nearly two decades of existence. Showroom Of Compassion, CAKE’s first record of new material since the release of Pressure Chief seven years ago, comes via the band’s own label, Upbeat Records. Not only is this a first for CAKE, who have always made it a point to stay true to their independent roots, but also the first Number One release for Warner’s Independent Label Group.

“Sick Of You” remains a Top 5 hit at both Alternative and Triple A radio, and the video continues in heavy rotation at both MTV2 and MTVu. Rolling Stone did a Q&A with lead singer John McCrea and premiered the video for the Showroom opener “Federal Funding.”

The buzz continues with “Long Time” set to be the second single from the album, featuring an animated music video. Look for the video to debut next week.

“We heard this hip little fuzzed-out tune on the radio, and we were, like, who’s this cool new band? Maybe something called Bear Antler? Then we realized it was CAKE.” – Rolling Stone

“[‘Sick Of You’] is vintage CAKE, with frontman John McCrea’s jaded, semi-spoken vocals, crunchy guitar riffs, a skippy beat, and blasts of trumpet.” Spin.com

Oh, and how funny is this? From CAKE’s road journal:

Monday, December 6, 2010
Pittsburgh, PA

We were in Pittsburgh on a Monday, so The Warhol museum was closed, which was especially unfortunate because a Marilyn Monroe exhibit is there now.

Do you know Pittsburghers have a dialect all their own?!

New Video: Dearling Physique’s “Discipline Your Hands”

From press release:

The clip itself depicts Mae, the primary subject of the band’s debut Deadeye Dealer album, in various ages, being confronted with memories. These memories are competing for attention while singer Domino Davis attempts to guide Mae into confronting them. The video also touches on duality and identity conflict.

A hybrid of mysterious, sensual rhythms; a soundtrack for the dark untraveled corners hidden beneath the gentle reflections of a pulsating metropolis…such is the musical landscape of Minneapolis band, Dearling Physique. Avant-garde but accessible, dark yet uplifting, Dearling Physique is a band that manipulates genres, effortlessly gliding between ambient sounds and electronica, from alt pop to soul, while defying preconceived notions of conventional music.

The album will be released next week, but for now you can grab a free download of “Discipline Your Hands,” here.

Mogwai “How to Be a Werewolf”

Now here’s something out of the ordinary and really cool…

Click image to watch the video!

Check out this video for an edited version of Mogwai’s outstanding track “How To Be A Werewolf” off their forthcoming LP Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (out Feb. 15, 2011 on Sub Pop). The video is an excerpt from the upcoming documentary 30 Century Man directed by Antony Crook who is also responsible for the gorgeous cover art of Hardcore...The documentary centers on James Bowthorpe, the round-the-world champion cyclist who beat the previous record by an epic 20 days.

This past summer Bowthorpe found himself in the isolated Norwegian countryside in the middle of a “white” night with director Crook for the film. “We were so far north the sun never set. I wanted the film to somehow give a sense of what James had achieved and the idea of him being alone, somewhere wild and isolated,” says Crook. Carrying with him at the time of filming were Mogwai’s new demos. Listening to “How To Be A Werewolf” on repeat while driving around looking for shoot locations, Crook says, seemed to fit perfectly with the landscape. When Mogwai saw the footage, the group decided to edit the song, constructing a version exclusively for the film. “We found the perfect backdrop to tell this story of somebody who points his bike at the horizon and then doesn’t stop pedaling. It’s a film about never giving up,” says Crook.

New Video: Infantree’s “Mourning Glory”

Click to watch the video for “Mourning Glory”

With three songwriting members that take turns on lead vocals, Infantree have no true frontman.  As a result, their highly collaborative approach creates a unique chemistry and the details of each of their songs are masterfully tailored.  It also allows for a diverse set of influences to find their way into the band’s music.  The band weaves in sun-soaked Americana, intricate baroque pop, dreamy psychedelia, and infectious Spanish melodies, to name a few.

Video Premiere of Shit Robot’s “Take Em Up”

Click to watch the video for "Take 'Em Up"

Shit Robot premiered his new video for “Take ‘Em Up” over at Pitchfork on Monday. The video follows LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang on a multi-colored, multiplied psychedelic voyage around Brooklyn.

“Best electronic album coming this year”
The Guardian

“Irish-born Marcus Lambkin (a.k.a. Shit Robot) may be one of the lower-profile members of the DFA crew, but that doesn’t mean the man doesn’t have some serious DJ chops.”
XLR8R

From the Cradle to the Rave (produced by James Murphy) is a near perfect album, and “Take Em Up” is one reason why. The interplay between Marcus “Shit Robot” Lambkin’s synthesizer disco-funk and Nancy Whang’s unflappable vocals is, simply, great. The album also features other DFA family guests such as Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and Juan MacLean.

Shit Robot, aka Marcus Lambkin (aka The Godfather of DFA, according to Murphy), is an Irish-born DJ who has been spinning dance music for over two decades. He’s responsible for not only turning Murphy onto dance music in the 90’s, but also literally lending his carpentry skills to build the infamous DFA studio from the ground up.

David Crowder Band – “SMS (Shine)” *Video*

Click to watch this amazing video for "SMS (Shine)"

David Crowder Band debuted the new video for their next single “SMS (Shine)”. This video gives me chills, really. It makes me want to smile, cry and smile again.

The video’s centerpiece is a bit of nostalgia that everyone will remember from childhood: LITEBRITE®.  Directed, shot and edited entirely by the band, the visually stunning new clip was created using over 700,000 LITE-BRITE® pegs composing 1,200 LITE-BRITE® images.  No computer generated graphics or effects whatsoever were used.  However, there were 2,150 man-hours from 83 friends who were powered by 148 pizzas!

Utilizing the ‘stop-motion’ style of filmmaking, “SMS (Shine)” tells the story of a couple falling in love.  Each frame was painstakingly conceived with exquisite detail and ‘moving’ images.  The creators even take us outside the canvas of the vintage toy to tell the couple’s story.  It was a labor of love and the end result is mesmerizing.  This is truly great visual art with a vintage toy from the 80s.

Who knew a video using a LITE-BRITE® could evoke such emotions!?!
