Video: Unicycle Loves You – “Falling Off”

Brooklyn’s Unicycle Loves You is gearing up to release their fourth album The Dead Age on June 10th (pre-order), and now the band has shared a new dark and psychedelic music video for “Falling Off.” The band filmed and produced every aspect of the video, superimposing some of their favorite cult films onto themselves, making for a unique counter-culture experience. In addition, Unicycle Loves You has rolled out the first phase of their summer tour dates (see below), stretching from the East Coast to the Midwest, with more coming soon.

Over the course of their first three records, Unicycle Loves You have transformed from a jangly power pop quintet (Unicycle Loves You) to a post-new wave quartet (Mirror, Mirror), to a garage-psych trio (Failure), into the fourth chapter in the evolution of the band: The Dead Age. Opening with an exhausted woman’s voice gasping “Oh my god!,” The Dead Age builds off of the heavier sound of Failure. Crafted meticulously, often pushing the tonal limits through a massive wall of sound, melodies explode into chaotic free-falls, where screaming guitars and mammoth-sized bass bend at the will of ULY, simultaneously paying homage to Mascis and Beefheart.

Scheduled for release on June 10th, The Dead Age was produced by Jim Carroll & mastered by Shellac’s Bob Weston. If Failure was their mission statement to add a dirty, unpolished edge to pop music, then The Dead Age is the sound of Unicycle Loves You completely dismantling it. Stand out tracks “Face Tattoo,” “Suicide Pizza,” Endless Bummer” and “Falling Off” are a few examples of a band that has fully forged their very own sonic aesthetic.

Video: Blue Foundation – “Describe”

Shot in Denmark by filmmakers Cecile Evert and Simon Lundsgaard, they were inspired by Blue Foundation’s lyric, “… I can describe it all for you, if you got the nerves/guts to look into my eyes.”

The filmmakers enlisted Martin and Louise, a couple in real life, as well as in the video. “We chose them because it was clear to us that they have a very unique relationship. We saw a certain chemistry between them. Their love for each other is very strong and unique, and we expected it to shine through the lens, which we think it did,” says Lundsgaard. He continues, “Sometimes you can be afraid of things that you can’t define or describe. But if you look beyond the surface you will find something you recognize in yourself. That is what this video is about.”

Brooklyn-based electronic dream-pop duo Blue Foundation is made up of producer/singer Tobias Wilner and multi-instrumentalist Bo Rande. Best known for their songs “Eyes on Fire,” which appeared in the Twilight saga and was certified double platinum in the US, and “Sweep,” from Michael Mann’s Miami Vice, the band released their album In My Mind, I Am Free on their own Dead People’s Choice Records last year. The release was followed up in January 2013 by remix album In My Mind I Am Reconstructed, which is available via iTunes and other digital retailers.

Over the past several years, Blue Foundation has expanded their audience, embracing both the underground and the alternative mainstream. Along with the Twilight Saga and Miami Vice, the band’s music has been featured in TV series The O.C., So You Think You Can DanceCSI: Miami, and more.

Newest Love: Little Racer

LR_PRESS_03.122731

“Sounds like California with a Brooklyn edge. It’s LoFi goodness that’s hard not to warm up to.”
– The New LoFi

“Meet New York’s Little Racer.  They make some fantastic pop music… like Talking Heads if they cut their teeth in casino lounges.”
– Sippy Cup Everything

“Little racer are the latest band to sign to the, frankly spot-on, Young & Lost Club label…. Lo-Fi, fast paced, skittering surf sounds for the ADHD generation. Think Surfer Blood crossed with The Strokes.”
– S//S//N

Little Racer is a four-piece from Brooklyn consisting of Elliot Michaud (vocals, guitar), Ish Nazmi (bass), Wade Michael (guitar), and Dave Tedeschi (Drums). Shortly after forming in 2010, their eponymous single Little Racer found it’s away across the ocean to the BBC and London imprint Young and Lost Club, who subsequently released the 7″ single  The Town/Split for the Coast in late 2011.  After a short visit to London to support the single, they returned to New York to write and record a follow up EP.  With influences ranging from New Order to Cat Stevens, their ringing guitars and choruses will most definitely take you away from it all, even if only for 24 minutes.

Brooklyn-based duo Ghost Beach release Miracle (Remixes) EP via Nettwerk Records today. Formed in 2012, the duo of Josh Ocean and Eric “Doc” Mendelsohn have perfected a blend of retro and futuristic soaring synth pop that can best be described as Tropical Grit Pop.

Miracle (Remixes) EP will include the album version, as well as several remixes of the title track by Le Youth, DallasK and Nathan C. East coast meets west coast when Los Angeles-based Le Youth does a funky disco remix of “Miracle.” Nathan C remixes the track into a driving progressive house track while Dallas K takes the synth-heavy route, pairing lush saw sounds with guitars. With their self-titled debut EP and follow-up EP Modern Tongues, Ghost Beach has set the Internet ablaze with consistent number ones on Hype Machine. Check ‘Em Out: KNTRLR

01_KNTRLR_press_pic

Shot in a Brooklyn warehouse at 4 a.m., the new video for “CCA” by electronic rock duo KNTRLR features snarling vocals and swift-kicking drums from KNTRLR members Michael Henry and Charles Davis as well as a fast-paced chase between trained fighters J. Parker Wood and Andrew Chaffee.

KNTRLR may be an electronic production duo, but it contains the kinetic energy that can only come from humans beating on instruments. Live they play with friends they know from the NY music scene who help fill out the sound and provide an energy you can’t get with samples streaming out of a laptop.

Also, have a listen to “Stab” below. It’s quite a cool down from the adrenaline rush of “CCA”.

Video: Desert Stars – “Farewell Decade”

Desert_Stars_1_0073

Brooklyn’s Desert Stars have premiered the jewel encrusted, kaleidoscopic video for their song “Farewell Decade”. I’m not the biggest fan of the video, but I’m surely digging the song.

“The song is about a friendship that is over, even though this could be seen as sad, it is a part of growing up.  I wanted to express how when we move on and out of toxic relationships we spring into another dimension, we detangle ourselves, we break free,” explains video director Stephanie Dodes. “It’s a surreal exploration in to the ways in which we are all mirrors and spring boards for one another.”

Desert Stars is comprised of lead vocalist Janelle Best, guitarist and backing vocalist Carrie Ashley Hill, guitarist Eric Altesleben and drummer Gregg Giuffré, a quartet whose music has the effect we only wish Phil Spector had produced for The Jesus and Mary Chain. With twelve tracks of languid harmony and reverb, Habit Shackles (available now) is certain to resonate with fans of Nico, Cat Power and their ilk.

Newest Love: Ski Lodge

SkiLodge_2_by_Luca_Venter_

“Mixing a dash of The Smiths’ swagger with more worldly influences”—Brooklyn Vegan

“Ski Lodge’s songs are most impressive not for their simplicity or for their general vibes, but for their striking clarity and attention to detail, as well as hooks so strong you couldn’t ignore them if you tried.”–The L Magazine

“Think, Real Estate and The Smiths. Marr writes about nostalgic memories of youth on top of his indie surf jams.” – Earmilk

“The album is preceded by first single, “Boy”, one of the catchiest ways to convey total suffocation and a perfect ode to summer heartache.” – Consequence of Sound

Twenty-plus years of stories, twenty-plus years of perfecting music’s craft, Ski Lodge’s Big Heart is exactly what a debut record should be: the culmination of a creative force’s life on this planet. Andrew Marr, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter behind Ski Lodge, has created a deeply personal record that overflows with lush melodies and insatiably catchy choruses. His songs occasionally deal with dark matters—infidelity, painful break-ups, loneliness, disjointed father-son dynamics—but Marr bathes them in a blissful light ripe for sing-alongs.

“I try to write songs honestly, and a lot of the things going on in my head that I struggle with might be deemed ‘dark,’ but I don’t think that means I can’t sing about them in a way that is musically upbeat or poppy,” Marr says, from his home in New York City. It’s a dichotomy that also translates to Marr’s choice for musical moniker. He explains the name Ski Lodge “evoked an image of being warm by a fire, alone or with friends, while outside exists the cold and cruel winter.”

Big Heart, Ski Lodge’s debut full-length, out this summer on Dovecote Records, is Marr’s fullest realization of this hot and cold split. Marr wrote all of the lyrics and music, and played nearly every sound that ended up on the record. However, this was the first time the 26-year-old worked in a professional studio with a producer, the indelible Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Fool’s Gold), over several weeks in Los Angeles. The combination of Marr’s intrinsic songwriting and Pesacov’s LA-defining production skills resulted in music with fuller breadth and scope than Ski Lodge’s previous release without losing any of the wry innocence that made 2011’s self-titled debut EP so much fun.

The one exception is the lead single “Just To Be Like You,” which was recorded with the full band in Upstate New York using producer Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Real Estate). Prefix Mag called the track “sugary sweet pop,” while Pitchfork warned its readers not to “be deceived by the energetic, hopscotching riff” before lauding the single’s dark depths. The song and its accompanying video of cult imagery are an exploration of contrast that fits in perfectly with both the album and Ski Lodge as a whole: deeply affecting and unmistakably danceable.

Listen: Ski Lodge – “Just To Be Like You”

Big Heart Track Listing:

1.  Anything To Hurt You
2.  Boy
3.  Looking For A Change
4.  Big heart
5.  You Can’t Just Stop Being Cruel
6.  Dragging Me To Hell
7.  I Always Thought
8.  Does It Bring You Down
9.  Just To Be Like You
10. Down On This Southern Tip
11. I Can’t Tell

Ski Lodge is having their album release party August 20th at Grasslands Gallery in Brooklyn.
