Video: Ben Browning – I Can’t Stay

Cut Copy are hard at work on the follow-up to Zonoscope and to hold you over until then, bassist Ben Browning has just released his 1st solo EP, Lover Motion, on the band’s own Cutters Records. To celebrate its release, Browning is taking time out to head to America with Gus Franklin behind the drum kit and a special secret guest rounding out the trio, to play a handful of select dates. The EP is available on iTunes everywhere. It is also out on vinyl and CD at all fine shops and online outlets.

Most of the basic tracks were home spun, and afterwards the talents of Gus Franklin and Haima Marriott (Architecture in Helsinki) were enlisted to add production and shimmer to the finished product. The pair re-effected and mixed the recordings, with Franklin and Lachlan Dickie (one half of film directing duo Krozm) also providing live-drums to some of the original tracks. Meanwhile, Cut Copy’s own Dan Whitford reached into his collection of vintage synths to provide keyboard programming, producing some of the classic keyboard tones that lie herein.

The “Sun God” single, with two remixes by Andrew Weatherall, will be available in digital and vinyl formats on Jan 24th. This is the band’s first Grammy nomination and bookends a phenomenal year that saw the band play to rapturous audiences across the globe including a thundering Coachella set and headlining slot at Austin City Limits.

Recorded over a 6 month period in a warehouse space the band rented in Melbourne, Australia and mixed in Atlanta by Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Deerhunter), Zonoscope paints a mesmerizing picture, conjured by a band at the height of their powers.

Grammy Nomination – Cut Copy

Cut Copy’s stellar Zonoscope has been nominated for the Best Dance/Electronica Album Grammy. This is the band’s first Grammy nomination and bookends a phenomenal year that saw the band play to rapturous audiences across the globe including a thundering Coachella set and headlining slot at Austin City Limits. The Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 12th at Los Angeles’ Staples Center and will be televised on CBS that same day at 8 pm EST / 7 PM CST. Zonoscope is Cut Copy’s 3rd and most ambitious work yet. It was released by Modular Records this past February and was met with critical raves ranging from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork. Zonoscope is Cut Copy boiled down to their purest form, a suite of futuristic visions built upon primal rhythm tracks. It is at once their most immediate work to date but also their most sonically exquisite. “Take Me Over” perfectly encapsulates this, its chiming highlife guitars bouncing around tropical percussion reminiscent of an island holiday in a pop song.

LIVE: Cut Copy

Months ago when I saw in an email that Cut Copy was coming, I immediately made my arrangements to attend. Finally, they were coming! I couldn’t believe it and I had to be there. Thank goodness I was, too, because they put on a helluva show. I got a prime spot towards the front where I could see and still be relatively comfortable. The venue was filled. Everyone was excited and sweaty with anticipation.

Then the quartet of dudes entered the stage. The crowd was on point; ready and in dance mode. “Where I’m Going” from the latest album, Zonoscope, was played at the beginning of the set. I like that it was thrown into the beginning for some measure against some of the lesser known songs. They all led up to the second half of the show, which was more pleasing than pink starburst.

Dan Whitford stood there belting out songs while a fan (a literal, electric fan; not a person…haha, although I would have done it. I love you, Dan!) blew air through his luscious hair, evoking images of a cheesy 80s heart throb movie. In fact, I read an interview online from Seattle Gay News where the writer asked what the secret is to Dan’s hair. Guitarist, Tim Hoey answered saying Whitford’s actually working on his own hair line. Jokingly, Hoey added, “he basically modeled it on the bad kid from Karate Kid.”

“Lights and Music” broke out, and when it did, everyone went completely ape shit! I get chills just thinking about the seconds leading up to the first chorus. Just picture everyone in a movie theater sitting on the edge of their seat, waiting for that crucial moment you know will happen. I nodded my head along with the beat of the 5 second interval before all broke loose. The lights start blinking different neon colors, everyone is fiercely dancing and screaming while Dan Whitford is loudly singing “Lights and Music, are on my mind.” It’s definitely one of my FAVORITE concert moments.

Whitford keeps going, “Fading with the color you see in my face, cold and crystal you can’t hide ‘cuz your tears race. I’ll be waiting by in time, put your dreams away. You’re holding hope open for the one making you wait.” At this point, everyone is clapping with the beat, ready for the next chorus again. The cheering, screaming and clapping all gets louder and faster. I remember dancing fluidly as one with the crowd while smiling and laughing like a little girl the whole time. Wondrous.

After that serving of hotness, the band moved on with “Take Me Over,” another crowd pleaser. They just kept coming after that. “Out There on the Ice” and “Hearts on Fire” blew me away and left me dazed and dumbfounded. Cut Copy had us all in the palms of their hands. It was a big, sweaty dance party. All of my favorites were played. Plus, they came back out TWICE to play ONE more song. And they totally jammed out, too. If you have a chance to catch one of their shows, you better go. I mean, I would go even if they only played “Lights and Music,” it’s that awesome. I couldn’t have asked for a better set list. I came, I saw and I danced (my ass off).

Pacific Festival:OC

Steve Aoki and Pacific Festival Entertainment are pleased to present the 2nd annual Pacific Festival: OC, which will be held on August 13 (11 a.m.–12 a.m.). The star-studded event will be held at Oak Canyon Ranch near Irvine Lake in Orange County, CA. Early-bird presale tickets are on sale now at www.pacificfestival.com

Pacific Festival Entertainment is the vision of two groups of longtime friends with a combined 40 years of experience in music and event production. Steve Aoki, world-renowned DJ and founder of Dim Mak Records, and Mike Tunney, founder of Collaborative Media, have been friends for over 25 years, growing up together in Newport Beach. As their first business venture, Aoki and Tunney wanted to create a new music and arts festival for the Orange County community. With a keen vision to produce first-class live entertainment experiences, the two friends joined
forces to create Pacific Festival Entertainment alongside Kelson Berkus and Orange County-native Justin Ruiz.

“The idea was to produce an event that connects culture with community; art with music; and entertainment with philanthropy in our backyard of Orange County,” says Steve Aoki, one of the festival’s founding partners. “We wanted to establish a premium music and arts festival, and have organized a large collective of seasoned event producers, artists, friends and musicians.”

Last year, Governor Schwarzenegger endorsed DEEJAY DC’s successful Guinness Book of World Records attempt at Pacific Festival: OC for the world longest DJ set—spanning 121 consecutive hours. “This is a quite an endeavor you’re about to undertake, one that could not happen without your determined efforts and skills. As a former professional athlete, I know the tremendous amount of preparation it takes to become a winner, and I applaud your dedication to making your goals a reality,” wrote Governor Schwarzenegger in a letter of support written to Deejay DC.

Pacific Festival: OC will showcase over 30 of independent music’s most talented live acts and DJs from around the world across four premium soundstages at an incredible, picturesque lakeside venue within the heart of Orange County. Pacific Festival: OC is pleased to announce the first round of performers which include: CUT COPY, STEVE AOKI, CALVIN HARRIS, GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY, !!! (CHK CHK CHK), PHANTOGRAM, TORO Y MOI, CLASSIXX, AFROMAN, ZOOT WOMAN, THE TWELVES, FRED FALKE, THE GROWLERS, HANNI EL KHATIB, SUPERHUMANOIDS, AMERICAN ROYALTY, JUSTIN MILLER, THE C90S and KEDD COOK (more artists to be announced each week). “The festival has a good mix of genres, not covering just dance music or just indie rock like so many new festivals,” states Golden Bloggen about last year’s launch.

Newest Love: French Horn Rebellion

Watch the video for “Up All Night”

“Next big thing…Electro” New York Times
“Irresistible, panting synth-pop, with fat new wave key tones and ecstatic vocals.” Pitchfork
“A roller-coaster ride of an album that is as uplifting as it is beguiling” Q Magazine
“Warp speed eclectic” Time Out London

French Horn Rebellion (Robert and David Perlick-Molinari) kick off 2011 by announcing the US self-release of their debut album The
Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion
on April 19th digitally and May 24th physically (Once Upon A Time Records) and play 27 North American live shows supporting French electro pop outfit Yelle starting 17th April. MySpace Music exclusively premieres the band’s debut early, go here to listen to it.

Written, produced and mixed by Robert and David, ‘The Infinite Music…’ is a debut album that warps the fabric of dance, electro, rock and funk and may just turn out to be a contender for this year’s most ambitious, multi-faceted and engaging debut album. Crucially, the album also follows an intergalactic narrative that tracks the physical and emotional journey of an unknown French Horn player. “There is a story running through the album, it’s about the Universe. We’re pretty clear on what the story is, but what you take away from it may be something entirely different,” says David.

These two unassuming brothers, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have already toured and played with the likes of Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, The Drums and Cut Copy. The band have also remixed the likes of MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD, Young Empires and Alex Winston.

Check out this hilarious video for “Broken Heart”
