Newest Love (+ download): The Dig
New York City’s rock band The Dig will release their new album Midnight Flowers on May 29th via Buffalo Jump Records. In celebration, they’re hosting three record release shows in DC, NYC, and Chicago. In July they will move to Los Angeles by popular demand and return for a residency at Silverlake Lounge after playing their successful shows with Ben Kweller last month. The band is proud to lend their single to Turn the Tide: Songs for “Last Call at the Oasis” a companion chartity album to the new film Last Call at the Oasis in support of the global water crisis alongside 20 unreleased exclusive tracks from artists including Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Alabama Shakes, My Morning Jacket and more.
Listen/Download: The Dig – “I Already Forgot Everything You Said”
The Dig’s sound has been developing ever since the band’s two singers Emile Mosseri and David Baldwin started making music together when they were eleven years old. After meeting California native Erick Eiser, the three songwriters have been writing tunes and playing in different bands since they were 16 years old. Anchored by sharp guitars, a woozy synth backdrop and airtight vocal harmonies, the new album Midnight Flowers is produced by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples In Stereo, Swans, Antony & The Johnsons) and it recalls styles ranging from T. Rex to Brian Eno to The Everly Brothers. Leading up to the release of Midnight Flowers, The Dig have pressed a limited number of cassette tapes containing the album’s first two singles, “Red Rose In The Cold Winter Ground” and “I Already Forgot Everything You Said.”
“Even though it takes us about 15 minutes to make each individual cassette, which is done using an old boom box in the back of our van between shows, we like the idea of having the songs that we recorded using analog tape machines available on cassette. For any of our fans that have moved on from 1995, each cassette comes with a digital download.”
Following their acclaimed 2010 debut, Electric Toys, The Dig amassed a passionate national following with magnetic live performances touring with the likes of Portugal. The Man, The Antlers, and The Walkmen. The band began writing new songs on the road and back home in New York between tours. The new songs reflect a rich sense of lyricism in “Red Rose in the Cold Winter Ground” and “Glass Horse” while thrumming with a charged pop sensibility in “All Tied Up” and “Break the Silence.” When we were writing “I Already Forgot Everything You Said,” guitarist and vocalist David Baldwin recalls, “We had just gotten off the road with The Antlers and we were listening to a lot of Bob Dylan’s Time Out of Mind. I think those influences found their way into that song particularly. But really the songs on this album are personal.”

- Erick Eiser (Keyboards/Guitar)
- Mark Demiglio (Drums)

Listen: Wintersleep – “Nothing Is Anything (Without You)”

Nova Scotia’s Wintersleep produces music that has the ability to grab listeners with its pop charm and keep them captivated with its subtle complexities. Having won a Juno Award, performed on The Late Show With David Letterman, and spent the last few years touring extensively in support of two successful releases, the band is now gearing up to unleash Hello Hum, a multi-dimensional record full of catchy pop hooks, thoughtful lyrics, and heartfelt sentiment. Co-produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, The Flaming Lips) and Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai), Hello Hum is due out June 12th via Roll Call Records/ILG. The album’s first single, “Nothing is Anything (Without You)” premiered with Paste Magazine, who calls it “…an infectious three minute song that shows that the band is back in full force.” Indeed, the track features a lively guitar melody and a driving combination of drum beats and handclaps.
It is available to stream today and will be available for purchase May 15th on all digital retailers. The new record opens with “Hum,” which offers a swirling, slow-building intro to the series of energetic tracks that follow. The upbeat “In Came The Flood” showcases the depth of the band’s sound, featuring melodic vocals atop a densely layered foundation of guitars, vocal harmonies, and driving percussion “Smoke” closes out the album on a softer note, allowing melodic vocals to shine over a subdued instrumental background and steady rolling drum beat. Wintersleep fans will have a chance to catch the band live as they head out on a limited US tour this spring. Having already shared stages with acts like Pearl Jam, Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade, The Hold Steady and Paul McCartney, be sure to catch Wintersleep in your city!

Video: The Spring Standards – Here We Go

“ethereal indie-pop” – NPR
“New York-based rockers the Spring Standard bring a touch of the Cars’ spastic guitar crunch to “Here We Go,” a soaring tune about those first hopeful flushes of romance.” – SPIN
“Together, the two EPs create a rich experience of sound and emotion.” – MAGNET
The Spring Standards are preparing to release their new record, yellow//gold, consisting of two emotionally-charged EPs that tell intertwining stories of growing up and leaving home to embark on a new adventure. yellow evokes a sense of nostalgia for the trio’s shared childhoods—they started playing folk music together as teenagers in the rural landscapes of the Pennsylvania/Delaware border— while gold is a declaration of young life in a big city, bursting with energy. Flush with rolling piano, wistful strings, and brittle to booming percussion, the yellow//gold double-disc record is due out May 1st on Parachute Shooter Records. “Here We Go” is a cautious, yet hopeful song about the discovery of true love, with an air of anticipation and excitement that explodes into a chorus packed with energy. The band has released a hilariously charming video for the album track right down to the Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance sequence.
Like a group of journeying troubadours, The Spring Standards tantalize the imagination with truthful, relatable stories and create a musical atmosphere that covers a vast spectrum of emotion.

Video: Secret Music – “Ghost in the Graveyard”
“Ramshackle indie rock duo Secret Music builds their frenetic pop around simple, catchy synth or guitar lines” –Stereogum
Brooklyn-based Secret Music (comprised of Chase Nicholl and Daniel Fry) have premiered the wild, new music video for their single, “Ghost in the Graveyard,” on Vice’s Noisey YouTube channel.
The rowdy track, which was produced by Passion Pit’s Ayad Al Adhamy, is from the band’s self-titled debut, which dropped on March 6th via Black Bell Records/Warner Music’s ILG. The video stars stunt man and Guinness World Record Holder for Longest Body Burn, Ted Batchelor – who plays a character escaping his tedious, suburban lifestyle, and winds up lighting himself on fire. The song is a perfect fit for the video’s outrageous story plot.
Additionally, Secret Music is thrilled to announce the band’s West Coast tour with rockers Middle Class Rut and Beware of Darkness that kicks-off on April 21st. While on the road, Nicholl and Fry will be joined on stage with touring members Dave Weingarten (drums), Jared Rich (keys/synth) and Michael Boss (bass), that will help to flesh out Secret Music’s infectious sound.
Buy Secret Music’s new self-titled record on iTunes or Amazon.
