Download: The Last Bison – “Switzerland”

THE LAST BISON want to bring you to “Switzerland.” The Virginia “mountaintop chamber” ensemble is currently giving away its first single, “Switzerland,” as a free download now. The song also comes on their four-song debut EP for Republic Records, Inheritance, available through iTunes and all digital outlets.

Boasting a vivid and fascinating tale of travel on a snowy evening, the track functions as an appropriate introduction to the group’s unique amalgam of rustic folk and roots-y rock. They’ve also already drawn critical praise for this sound. Noise Trade commented that the band is “based far more in inspiration than imitation,” while Folk Hive claimed, “The Last Bison is a welcome respite from all that is manufactured.”

With seven members connected by family ties and lifelong friendships, there’s truly no group out there quite like The Last Bison. At the forefront is singer and songwriter Ben Hardesty. His father Dan and sister Annah comprise this collective as well as Andrew and Jay Benfante, Teresa Totheroh, and Amos Housworth. When they all get together, magic happens, yielding music that’s as immediate as it is inspirational.

Following up a successful jaunt supporting Langhorne Slim, The Last Bison is currently roaming across the United States on a headline tour. After almost a lifetime of playing together, they’re truly in sync on stage, making for an unforgettable experience.

ON AN ON – “The Hunter”

Click to listen to “The Hunter” from ON AN ON

ON AN ON have just released “The Hunter” – the second song from their forthcoming debut album Give In, out January 29th via Roll Call Records. “The Hunter” comes on the heals of their incredibly well-received debut single “Ghosts,” which Nylon gushed over as “dream-washed synth-pop that never gets too sweet,” and Consequence of Sound described as “haunted yet exquisitely exposed.” Music lovers seemed to agree, having streamed the song on SoundCloud over 140,000 times in under 5 weeks; an incredibly encouraging phenomenon for a brand new artist’s first introduction to the world.

Buy: ON AN ON – “The Hunter” at iTunes

The Chicago/Minneapolis based trio that make up ON AN ON (Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci, and Ryne Estwing) have played music with one another in various capacities for the better part of a decade before collaborating together as a trio. The culmination of a long and precarious, but ultimately rewarding journey, Give In was recorded with producer Dave Newfeld, known for his work on Broken Social Scene’s seminal album You Forgot It In People as well as records from Super Furry Animals and Los Campesinos.

Listen: ON AN ON – “Ghosts” (YACHT Remix)

NEW! The Dandy Warhols – “Autumn Carnival”

The Dandy Warhols have released their latest single, “The Autumn Carnival,” and I think it’s pretty great. The video was directed by Thomas Rhazi and produced by Wanda, shot in Blackpool, England, and stars young Owen Salthouse as “The Boy.”

“The Autumn Carnival” is taken from their latest album, This Machine, and was written by Courtney Taylor-Taylor with David J from Bauhaus/Love & Rockets. Says Court: “The song came from David J and I discussing Something Wicked This Way Comes. The theme here is how, as we age, our view of youth and our feelings regarding what it means become paper thin and almost totally unrealistic.”

Video: Non Tiq – “Love Machine”

Her new single is a fun and playful tune yet has some adult undertones that gives its sweet production a bit of a crunch.
ArjanWrites

Non Tiq, this talent is a quiet storm waiting to explode and “Love Machine” is like a ticking time bomb, rife with tension throughout for an original sounding song.
Europopped

The song holds the aesthetic electropop-line of Non Tiq, it’s a bit colder and fragile than “Quietly” but it’s as carefully produced and obviously treated by creators like a piece of pop-art.

Passion Pit and Youngblood Hawke

Two nights ago, a group of us went to see Passion Pit. I was excited to see them, and one of the opening acts, Youngblood Hawke (which I interviewed back in August and you can check it out here). Youngblood Hawke’s set was really fun and upbeat. A friend of mine didn’t know who they were, but said she really liked them. They played all of the songs from their EP. The crowd was really pleased with “We Come Running” when they ended their show with the recent alt rock hit. They were a great predecessor to Passion Pit.

When Passion Pit came out, everyone went crazy. Their first song was “Take a Walk” and it was awesome! I was surprised because it’s not very often that a band starts out with one of their biggest hits, but they did, and I liked it. They mixed between songs from Manners and their newest album Gossamer. It seemed to me that everyone really digs Manners more. Things were a little slowed down when songs from Gossamer were performed. Then, at the very end everyone perked right up when they finished their set with “Sleepyhead”. I couldn’t WAIT to hear it and apparently everyone else felt the same. It was also super cool that all the other band members that were touring with them all came out on stage to dance around. One of them was taking video of the whole thing, catching glimpses of the audience and the other musicians jammin’ out. My favorite parts of their performance were the first and last songs. They had a great turn out for their first show in Pittsburgh. Make sure you check out the awesome video at the top of this post that someone took of the finale. It gives me chills of happiness when I watch it and remember that feeling of being there.

New Video: Walk Off The Earth – “Red Hands”

Walk Off The Earth have released a new video for their original song “Red Hands.” The group are already known for their innovative, unique homemade videos, and this one is no different. NPR’s Bob Boilen calls the video “high-concept but homemade, a little like the work of director Michel Gondry or the videos made by OK Go.  It’s a bit of a visual puzzle.”

The video, directed by Ellis Bahl, was shot in a single take in a warehouse in LA, and required the band to perform the song out of order and at different speeds to achieve the effect of jumping through time. Bahl explains, “We shot it on a steady-cam and walked backwards down the whole hallway with the band walking forwards performing the out of order song towards the camera. We only had enough supplies/daylight for ten takes and finally got it on the last one. It was really scary, but the payoff was immense.”

“Red Hands” is one of four tracks on WOTE’s just-released R.E.V.O. EP. “When we originally wrote the song, we were thinking about taking responsibility for your actions and standing up on your own when things go wrong… rather than blaming other people around you. Sometimes you just have to accept the circumstances that are thrown your way without pointing the finger,” says Gianni Luminati. Rolling Stone says of the song “‘Red Hands’ explodes with xylophone, walls of drums and anthemic chants,” and the NY Daily News has also praised the EP’s “rustic folk-pop originals with pluck.”

Walk Off The Earth have been bringing their energetic live show around the world all year, including a well received set at this summer’s Lollapalooza and sold out headlining shows in cities from NYC and LA to Toronto, Tokyo, Singapore, London, and Paris. They’re wrapping up the East Coast leg of their US headlining tour, and will pick up with a West Coast leg later this month. In addition to traditional ticket sales, fans can also purchase a special bundle including the R.E.V.O. EP and a ticket to the show of their choice here: http://smarturl.it/wotetix. A full list of tour dates is below.

Walk Off The Earth features multi-instrumentalists Gianni Luminati, Marshall, and Sarah Blackwood on vocals, Taylor on keyboards, and Joel Cassady on drums. WOTE have an incredibly loyal fanbase, with over 780k subscribers to their YouTube channel and over 592k fans on Facebook. The band gained notoriety for their creative multi-million-viewed YouTube videos ranging from a cover of the Weeds theme “Little Boxes” to Adele’s “Someone Like You” to their wildly popular cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” with all five band members playing one guitar, which has been viewed over 138 million times and landed the group a performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
