Video: Daily Holla – “Waves” ft. J Fitz

dailyholla

Gold Coast Producer Daily Holla, AKA Harry Deadman, has today released a brand new track with a complementing video. “Waves” is an emotionally charged piece of work with layers of dynamic production contrasts.

What started out as a chilled synth-based track, has now become somewhat of an identifier for Daily Holla, and a beautiful mistake.

“‘Waves’ was the first track I wrote off what eventually became the second Daily Holla EP. I started writing the song back in mid 2015. It all started with a plastic sounding arp loop, which was initially meant to be a placeholder, but it’s still there! I completely forgot about replacing it later on and I both love that silly mistake and hate it.”Daily Holla

Teaming up with newcomer J Fitz has given this melodic banger a juicy ambiance that really enhances the delay and distortion effects of the overall song. This duo clearly has their mojo in sync, as they continue to create a cohesive vision.

“I’ve never seen someone work like her. She came in and listened to a rough mix of the track, half an hour later the vocals were cut and we were eating some Vietnamese take away. I was so used to doing everything on my own in my bedroom that sitting in a studio in Sydney felt so surreal.” – Daily Holla

Having studied film at university and loving the combination of music and film, Daily Holla brought his two passions together for “Waves”. Enlisting the help of former uni mate, and now film director/cinematographer Mark Desiatov, the video follows the struggles of ballet dancer Jade Moris, as she suffers through injuries and anxiety leading up to a final performance.

This short-film style video is the perfect way to show the strength and willpower it takes on both sides of the spectrum in creating a work that translates to an audience. The imagery is raw and will have you gasping for air, much like J Fitz’s powerful ending.

“I’ve always wanted to mix the fluidity and timeless beauty of ballet with more of a modern and contemporary sound which I thought Harry (Daily Holla) has. The concept revolves around the lyrics and the idea of self-belief through adversity; a common theme that most people can connect with. I believe there’s nothing more breathtaking than a live ballet or dance performance where the artist defies the pain and physical hardships throughout their routine; which is a reflection of the underlying theme of the clip,” – Mark Desiatov

Daily Holla’s upcoming EP has been shaped around “Waves,” with the new track available now on Spotify & iTunes through Inertia Access.

Check It Out: Tre Coast – “I Can’t Let You Go”

tre

Tre Coast, an 18 year old North Carolina native, has been playing the piano since the age of seven, and recording music in his own bedroom since he was 13. He’s known for combining elements of pop, R&B and electronic music with well-told stories that capture the feelings anyone and everyone can relate to. Tre Coast found early success online, garnering over 25 million of views and streams of his music.

Of this song, he says:

I wrote “I Can’t Let You Go” about an on again, off again relationship I was in for three years. She would lie, cheat and make things difficult at all times, but I continued to go back to her. That’s what “I Can’t Let You Go” is truly about. Being so attached to someone that you can’t move on from. You can’t let them go. I’ve been able to move on since writing this song, but it’s still a reminder to never go back to that relationship.

With only a handful of original material released (Big Beat, Atlas Chair and Mix Mash) LEFTI has already been supported by top tier DJ’s (Don Diablo, Laid Back Luke, Martin Solveig..) as well as placement in digital marketing synchronization through the likes of Hulu and Vanity Fair. LEFTI is currently set to release a string of singles in the months ahead.

Of the song:

“Collaborating on this song was a fun lil’ journey. Initially we were hanging out working on an edit which turned into a fun sample based disco track that ignited the idea to reach out to Adeline as a feature. Writing together was a blast and once we got her vocals in a great place, we realized we needed to change the instrument bed into something with a little more bite.” — Equal + LEFTI

Check ‘Em Out: West Of The Sun

westofthesun
Full of psych-guitar jangle and swaggering percussion
Clash Magazine

West Of The Sun are an indie rock band formed in Derby, 2013. Their story began in a flat above a pub in Derby when lead singer Luke met fellow university student and guitarist/songwriter Michael, the pair bonding almost instantly over everything from bands such as the Doors and Interpol to supporting championship football teams.

It was while working in that local music pub that Luke then met rhythm guitarist and Derby local lad Joe and the 3 of them would write together. With the addition of bassist Kieran and drummer Stevie, the band soon kicked up a groove and West Of The Sun was born.

The band’s name is taken from the Haruki Murakami novel ‘South Of The Border, West Of The Sun’ which describes a farmer on the brink of insanity who embarks on a quest to chase whatever it is that may lie ‘west of the sun’. The name appealed to the band because of it’s oxymoronic nature, seemingly whimsical with a dark underbelly – in keeping with the band’s blend of melancholic lyrical content and tuneful delivery. A theme that influenced the band from repeated exposure to the work of their musical heroes Joy Division and The Smiths.

Recent singles “Siberian Hysteria” and “Trip On A Turntable” were greeted with positive acclaim and the band are currently recording songs for their debut LP, set for release later this year.

Must Listen: Julietta and Emma Jensen

julietta

Julietta has a wistful vibe that is reminiscent of alterna-pop acts like BANKS, with nostalgic sensibilities like Lana Del Rey. “Beach Break” was written while she was spending time in Nicaragua. In fact, the opening sounds in this song are actual field recordings of the jungle surroundings. You don’t wanna skip over this tune — check it out below:

emma-jensen

While you’re at it, check out Norway beauty Emma Jensen, too. Signed with Majestic Casual, she produces her own music (high fives)! Emma says, “‘Closer’ is about the feeling when you know you’re about to drift away from or lose someone, but you really want to hold on and let the person know that you’ll give it all to make things work.”

Newest Love: Rondo Mo – “Overflow”

rondomo
“Overflow” marks the first official release of Rondo Mo, the pseudonym of South-Londoner Robbie Redway. With his distinctive blend of dark, soulful electronica, this is unmistakably the sound of a promising new artist. The vocalist, producer and instrumentalist excels in creating a mood  that can appeal to both dance lovers and a more indie audience, with even a nod to a darker R&B form. Reminiscent of acts such as Caribou, LCD Soundsystem and Bob Moses, this style of connecting electronic and acoustic sensibilities is having somewhat of a renaissance period and Rondo Mo reveals himself to be a very welcome addition to the fold. He manages to channel the sound, rather than imitate, and completely envelopes the listener in his world of shadowy synths and melodies.

The track begins with a deep bass pulse heard far in the distance, before Redway’s voice creates a light for the listener to use to navigate. The sultry vocals and growing instrumentals build on a track that begins in darkness, while maintaining a sense of danger with lyrics of going in “way above my head”. The spacious washes and lone piano keys add a level of anticipation before the listener is hit with the beat. “Overflow” offers an eclectic mixture of sounds throughout, juxtaposing a darker subject matter with a groovy bassline and snaps. There are also moments where Redway’s driven production is punctuated with more emotive breakdowns, the airy textures giving space for the vocals to take control, and the track ultimately ending with the appropriate emotional climax.

The story of Rondo Mo begins in Cornwall rather than his native London. After a wide range of collaborative work, from releasing an album with house don Midland to touring as a session member of alt-folk band To Kill A King, Redway found himself in a ‘stylistic bewilderment’ and took to the reclusive Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Setting up in a remote barn, with no human contact and only the bleak moorland landscape for company for six weeks, he began working to reign in on a sound influenced by the limited vinyl collection he brought with him. Redway integrated the best elements of seventies’ soul and contemporary house music with a more cyncial vibe of eighties electronica, culminating in a sound delicately positioned between a confident dance sound and a moody underlay of  indie music. “Overflow” is a striking introduction to Rondo Mo, and a piece of music that affirms the intrigue surrounding this artist.
